5 offensive players Alabama fans need to watch during A-Day

Alabama’s annual A-Day game is set to kick off on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

There is plenty of talent both young and old to be excited about if you are a ‘Bama fan, and it will also be our first opportunity of the spring to see this year’s version of the Tide.

In his Thursday press conference leading up to A-Day, head coach Nick Saban said the format for the scrimmage would be the first-team offense against the first-team defense and the second-team offense against the second-team defense. With this format, fans will get to experience a more game-like scenario with good on good.

Leading up to the start of A-Day tomorrow, I wanted to sit down and give fans a handful of players from each side of the ball that I believe could make an impact during the scrimmage. I want fans to keep in mind that these are players that fans have not seen make a tremendous impact yet for the Crimson Tide, but could on Saturday and during the 2022 season.

Today we will look at the offensive side of the ball. Let’s roll.

Former Alabama 5-star RB Camar Wheaton announces transfer destination

The former 5-star RB has found a new home after spending one season with the Crimson Tide.

Former Alabama running back Camar Wheaton entered the transfer portal less than a month after the Crimson Tide’s season came to an end in the loss to Georgia for a national title. Today, Wheaton has announced where he will continue playing.

Wheaton, in a picture shared to Twitter, will play at SMU.

A five-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, Wheaton chose the Crimson Tide over Georgia, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State and others.

He did not record any stats in his true freshman season while at Alabama, but he was a name that intrigued many for later seasons.

Alabama’s running back room still has depth and plenty of names to get fans excited, with Georgia Tech transfer [autotag]Jahmyr Gibbs[/autotag] leading the way.

check out these clips of Alabama Football back on the field in full pads!

Alabama has moved well past the program’s last game: the loss the Georgia in the national championship. Now, the team has brought in early enrollees, has been working away at spring practices and now has the first scrimmage of 2022 in the books.

There are some players like quarterback [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag], linebacker [autotag]Will Anderson[/autotag] and others who are returning from last year’s roster who get fans excited to see the team back out on the field again.

However, there are some new faces that Crimson Tide fans now get to see in action in Bryant Denny Stadium repping the crimson and white.

A few transfers will likely be making a big difference on both sides of the ball, such as: former Georgia Tech running back [autotag]Jahmyr Gibbs[/autotag], former Georgia wide receiver [autotag]Jemaine Burton[/autotag] and former LSU defensive back [autotag]Eli Ricks[/autotag].

Incoming freshman quarterback [autotag]Ty Simpson[/autotag], a five-star recruit from the 2022 class, can also be seen in a few clips.

The list of important players making appearances in the clip can go on and on, but the video speaks for itself.

Late offensive transfer portal additions Alabama should consider

It may be late in the game, but the transfer portal still has plenty of talent Alabama could add.

Nick Saban warned the nation of what might happen to college football if transferring was made easier and more accessible. His warning was not headed and Alabama has been a hot landing spot for transfers.

Last season it was former Ohio State wide receiver [autotag]Jameson Williams[/autotag] and former Tennessee linebacker [autotag]Henry To’o To’o[/autotag] who joined the Crimson Tide and made an immediate impact.

For the upcoming 2022 season, Alabama added Georgia wide receiver [autotag]Jermaine Burton[/autotag], Georgia Tech running back [autotag]Jahmyr Gibbs[/autotag] and LSU corner back [autotag]Eli Ricks[/autotag].

There’s still plenty of offensive talent lingering within the transfer portal and Saban may not be done recruiting them.

Here are a few offensive players currently seeking a new start through the transfer portal.

Alabama Morning Drive: Nick Saban discusses third practice of the spring

The latest involving the Alabama Crimson Tide on Thursday morning.

Good morning and welcome back to our Thursday edition of Alabama Morning Drive where we deliver the latest news and notes surrounding the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Nick Saban and the Alabama football team hit the practice field in full pads for the first time this spring. In this edition of Alabama Morning Drive, we will look at what coach Saban had to say, and how the baseball and softball teams performed on Wednesday night.

Let’s get right to it!

A pair of newcomers make CFN’s all-transfer first team

All three Alabama portal additions made the CFN all-transfer team.

The Alabama Crimson Tide knows there is more than one way to skin a cat. Head coach Nick Saban signed the No. 2 rated recruiting class in the 2022 class as well as loaded up in the transfer portal.

Knowing the team needed to address a few positions immediately, the Tide add three players through the portal. According to Rich Cirmieniello of College Football News, two Alabama newcomers were among the all-transfer first team.

Jahmyr Gibbs, Running Back

Adam Hagy-USA TODAY Sports

It is no small task for the former Yellow Jackets running back. Gibbs will replace the outgoing Brian Robinson Jr, who racked up 1,343 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns in 2021. He added two more receiving touchdowns to his total as well.

The redshirt sophomore from Georgia Tech averaged 5.2 yards per attempt last season. Gibbs rushed for 746 yards with six total touchdowns. He should have plenty of opportunities in this offense with so much focus being placed on Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young.

What CFN Says…

(via Georgia Tech) – Bryce Young’s newest weapon is an explosive all-around playmaker and an elite option in the passing game.

Next, a key defender

Where does new Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs rank among SEC backs for 2022?

How does newcomer Jahmyr Gibbs stack up against the rest of the SEC’s running backs heading into 2022?

Nick Saban has seen numerous successful running backs become developed within the Crimson Tide program and go on to have successful careers in the NFL. The trend will likely continue into 2022 with a new face.

Jahmyr Gibbs joins Alabama via the NCAA transfer portal. Gibbs, a rising junior, played his first two seasons at Georgia Tech, and was very effective in running the ball.

Now, Gibbs is likely to become the Crimson Tide’s RB1 in 2022 and build upon his career stats of 232 carries for 1,206 yards and eight touchdowns, as well as his pass-catching stats, which include 60 receptions for 773 yards and five touchdowns.

Robbie Weinstein of 247Sports broke down the SEC’s expected started running backs and ranked them according to their production from the recent 2021 season.

Gibbs ranks near the middle of the pack at No. 5.

Weinstein writes,

“Alabama always has a ton of depth thanks to how it recruits, but Gibbs is a former 4-star prospect who played great for Georgia Tech over two seasons.

One of the big reasons why Gibbs is going to be on the field a ton? He is one of the nation’s top receiving backs, having combined for 60 receptions for 773 yards and five touchdowns through the air with the Yellow Jackets. Gibbs and Bryce Young are going to be extremely dangerous together.”

It is expected that Gibbs will have to compete to earn the starting role, as others like Trey Sanders and Jase McClellan are going to try and claim it.

Predicting Alabama’s RB rotation for the 2022 season

Predicting Alabama’s running back rotation for the 2022 season

Like most seasons, Alabama will be replacing a great deal of talent that is moving on to the NFL. One position of note is running back. Alabama will be replacing veteran back Brian Robinson Jr. who capped off his career with 1,343 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in 2021.

Alabama also loses a former five-star talent in Camar Wheaton who entered the transfer portal at the beginning of the month.

The good news for the Tide is that there is plenty of talent returning and also a handful of new additions that are sure to make an impact.

At the moment, Alabama is scheduled to return Trey Sanders, Jase McClellan, and Roydell Williams from last year’s team. The Tide was also able to bring in Georgia Tech transfer Jahmyr Gibbs as well as a pair of highly-touted high school backs in Emmanual Henderson and Jamarion Miller. While there is always a possibility of a freshman making a contribution, for the purposes of this article we will assume that both Henderson and Miller will redshirt.

The cupboard is definitely not bare for coach Saban, so the question needs to be asked, what will the running back rotation looks like in 2022?

Here is my completely unsolicited opinion.

Nick Saban discusses Alabama’s three transfer portal additions

Nick Saban has high hopes for the the three additions from the transfer portal

As usual Nick Saban and Alabama wrapped up national signing day with a press conference from the head coach.

During the press conference, Saban was asked to discuss the three new additions that the Crimson Tide made via the transfer portal. Here is what Saban had to say about each of the players and why the coaching staff targeted them.

On the addition of former Georgia wide receiver Jermaine Burton…

“Jermaine Burton was somebody that we recruited out of high school that we thought was a really, really good player. He had a fairly productive year at Georgia. They had a lot of good players at his position. You know, he had some production this year but might’ve seen a better opportunity because we’re a little bit more wide open and throw the ball more with a good quarterback. That may have been his intention, but we feel like we lost both starting receivers and Slade (Bolden), two to the draft and Slade. So, to get a more experienced player that has some playing time in this league probably is a good thing for us. And we like his ability and hopefully, he’ll be able to be very productive for us.”

On former Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs…

“Gibbs was a very productive running back at Georgia Tech. Very fast, very explosive guy, has really good hands. Actually practiced with us before the national championship game and we’re excited about the speed and explosiveness. He’s a really good receiver. I think he can do a lot of positive things for us.”

On former LSU cornerback Eli Ricks…

“Eli Ricks was a starting corner at LSU. Hurt his shoulder last year, he missed, I think, more than half the season. So obviously, you know both of our corners, Josh Jobe being a senior and Jalyn Armour-Davis going out for the draft, good opportunity for him and certainly adds some depth and experience at that position for us.

“So, all the guys have played well when they’ve played for their team. And we all thought that they would be positive additions for our team.”

I expect all three of these transfers to have an impactful season for the Tide in 2022.

Alabama Football: 5 position groups to watch this spring

Alabama Football: 5 position groups to watch this spring

Although Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide were not able to claim a national championship this past season, the 2021 team still accomplished quite a bit.

The Tide won the SEC Championship and finished with an impressive 13-2 record and Bryce Young became the first Alabama quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.

Now that the season has come to an end, let’s shift our focus to spring practice and which position groups Alabama fans should be watching when the Tide returns to practice in a couple of months.
