Panthers 2024 roster cuts tracker

Keep it here as we track each move the Panthers make in getting to their initial 53-man roster

Despite the difficult decisions that lie ahead, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales isn’t shying away from the challenge of getting down to his very first 53-man roster.

“Yeah, it’s hard. And I’m excited for it,” he told reporters after last Wednesday’s practice. “When you respect and regard the whole unit and you’re kinda bringing everybody up at the same time—with the teaching, with the practices, the drill work and all those things as we improve everyone—it makes the decisions harder and harder.

“So I’m really excited about doing this with Dan [Morgan], with Brandt [Tilis], with the coaching staff. We’ve kinda had our touch-points throughout camp to evaluate where we’re at right now, and then we’ll have that culmination after we get through this last game.”

Well, they got through that game—besting the host Buffalo Bills in their final preseason outing of the summer on Saturday. So now, the “excitement” begins.

Keep it here, from now until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, as we track each of the team’s moves in the path to their initial 53-man roster for the 2024 season.

Reviewing film for the Panthers’ top performers from preseason game vs. Jets

Before we jump into the Panthers’ preseason finale on Saturday, let’s hit the film for some standouts from last week’s outing.

The Carolina Panthers fell short to the New York Jets in their second preseason game last Saturday—where the team’s starters were, once again, held out of action. So, this left even more meaningful playing time to those whose jobs aren’t exactly secure.

Unfortunately, some of the players who took advantage of their opportunities are no longer on the roster—most notably running back Dillon Johnson and cornerback Lamar Jackson. But after taking a deep dive into the All-22 film from the contest, we still have three standouts to highlight . . .

LG Jack Anderson

Anderson has already made quite a few stops since entering the league as a seventh-round pick in 2021. Carolina, who reeled in the Texas Tech product on Aug. 11 to counter the injuries along their offensive line, became his sixth.

I came away not only thoroughly impressed, but also surprised by how seamlessly he played against the Jets’ second-team defensive line—which featured a couple of players who could’ve been starters elsewhere.

Anderson did some good work on duo blocks, creating creases for Johnson and fellow running back Mike Boone. He displayed the mobility to work effortlessly to the second level, and impressed with his movement skills and flexibility—which allowed him to wash out looping pass rushers.

The 6-foot-4, 313-pounder did a nice job of getting his pads low and winning with leverage. He was looking for extra defenders to block or help his fellow linemen with and put multiple defenders in the ground.

While he isn’t a lock for the Panthers’ initial 53-man roster, Anderson could make for a solid depth piece or practice squad player in another opportunity.

TE Ja’Tavion Sanders

Sanders, who has continued to grow into the chances he’s received due to injuries at his position, was one of a few rookie standouts on the night.

It wasn’t long ago that the former Texas Longhorn was the No. 3 tight end on the depth chart. With Ian Thomas and Tommy Tremble banged up, that allowed the team’s fourth-round selection to get his time in the spotlight.

There was a concern that the rookie would need to allocate some time as a big slot as he developed his in-line skill set. Instead, Sanders seems quite comfortable as an in-line Y and blocker.

He’s displaying more effort and willingness to stay attached to blocks. This allowed for some decent yardage for Boone and wide receiver Jonathan Mingo at times. Early in the game—off a play-action bootleg—Sanders ran a flat route to the boundary, catching it in stride and lowering his shoulder to bulldoze a would-be tackler.

With Thomas still dealing with an injury and Tremble having another potential hamstring issue after practice on Thursday, Sanders could be in line to have not only significant playing time in Week 1, but make his first career start in the NFL.

LB Trevin Wallace

A raw linebacker out of Kentucky, Wallace was arguably the most questionable selection by Carolina in the 2024 draft. And that rawness still shows, as he must continue to work on not overthinking each play and moving with the flow of the game.

But Wallace put on a show that made Panthers fans giddy for the future of the middle of their defense.

The former All-SEC defender displayed the sideline-to-sideline range and elite athletic ability that intrigued general manager Dan Morgan. Wallace brings a good amount of pop at the tackle point while flashing consistent technique as a tackler.

Remember how vicious Luke Kuechly’s tackles were? There were some shades of that, as Wallace sifted through traffic well while displaying good run fits and tackles in space.

Other standouts

  • Rookie cornerback Chau Smith-Wade was impressive with his reps at outside corner and at the nickel. He displayed good effort and willingness to come downhill in run support. There were also instances of him upending ball carriers. Don’t be surprised if he’s in line to start Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints at nickel.
  • Smith-Wade’s teammate, second-year defensive back Jammie Robinson, had an outstanding game against the Jets. He showed physicality in the run game, making physical tackles in the open field while being a great run support and defender in coverage.
  • Outside linebacker D.J. Johnson and interior defensive lineman T.J. Smith were two performers that stood out to me as well, especially in the first half. I appreciated Johnson’s effort and ability to seal off the backside of inside or outside zone runs. The Panthers’ 2023 third-round selection made some good plays against the run. Smith continued his strong preseason with great effort and his second sack in as many weeks. He has become a top candidate for the practice squad heading into the final game of the preseason.

Panthers sign 3 players on Sunday

The Panthers are adding some much-needed depth to their offensive line.

The Carolina Panthers have found some much-needed depth for their offensive front.

As announced on Sunday morning, the team has signed interior lineman Jack Anderson. The addition was first reported by Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer late Saturday night.

A Plano, Texas native, Anderson attended nearby Texas Tech University from 2017 to 2020. He started every one of his games for the Red Raiders at right guard, where he’d earn a Second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2018 and a First-team All-Big 12 selection in his senior campaign of 2020.

The 6-foot-4, 314-pounder would crack into the NFL as a seventh-round selection of the Buffalo Bills in 2021. After failing to make the team’s initial 53-man roster as a rookie, Anderson was brought back to the practice squad to start the year.

Three weeks in, Anderson was signed away from Buffalo by the Philadelphia Eagles. He went on to appear in two games for Philly that season.

Anderson has since played in 12 games for the New York Giants (2022) and one for the Indianapolis Colts (2023).

Carolina also signed defensive tackle Walter Palmore and wide receiver Tayvion Robinson, both of whom have previously spent time with the organization.

In the corresponding moves to make room for the additions, the Panthers waived running back Jaden Shirden and Willie Drew and waived/injured wide receiver Deven Thompkins.

Jaguars sign WR after tryout, release OL

Jaguars sign WR after tryout, release OL

Upon the conclusion of their mandatory minicamp on Wednesday, the Jaguars signed wide receiver Austin Trammell and released offensive lineman Jack Anderson, the team announced.

Trammell participated in Jacksonville’s mandatory minicamp between Monday and Wednesday on a tryout basis.

His signing was foreshadowed by Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson on Wednesday, who noted Jacksonville’s need for wide receiver depth following season-ending knee injuries to undrafted rookie receivers Wayne Ruby Jr. and David White Jr. over the last month.

“We’re down obviously couple receivers with David going down last week. We’re definitely looking to fill you couple spots before we head into camp,” Pederson said.

Undrafted out of Rice in 2021, Trammell spent the first season of his NFL career with Atlanta and the past two years with Los Angeles.

Trammell operated as the Rams’ primary punt returner in 2023, logging 25 attempts and averaging 7.3 yards per return. He also caught four passes for 29 yards, bringing his offensive totals with Los Angeles to six receptions for 42 yards.

Jacksonville claimed Anderson on waivers last week after he was let go by Indianapolis. He participated in the Jaguars’ mandatory minicamp and took reps at center with Mitch Morse and Luke Fortner excused from the practices.

A 2021 seventh-round NFL draft pick by Buffalo, Anderson has also played for Philadelphia and the New York Giants. He’s made 14 appearances over three seasons in the NFL, having logged 64 snaps at left guard, 50 snaps at center and 106 snaps at right guard.

The Jaguars will return to the Miller Electric Center in late July for training camp ahead of the 2024 preseason. Dates for training camp practices have yet to be announced.

Report: Jaguars claim former Colts OL

Report: Jaguars claim former Colts OL

Jacksonville claimed former Indianapolis interior offensive lineman Jack Anderson on waivers Friday, per John Shipley of Jaguar Report.

The Jaguars had an open spot on its offseason, 90-man roster following undrafted rookie wide receiver David White Jr.’s placement on injured reserve.

Anderson spent most of the 2023 campaign with Indianapolis, originally on the Colts’ practice squad before a promotion to the active roster in October, leading him to one appearance last season. He was reportedly let go on Thursday.

A seventh-round selection by Buffalo in the 2021 NFL draft, Anderson spent the early portion of his rookie season on the Bills’ practice squad before signing to Philadelphia’s active roster that September. A hamstring injury triggered his November placement on injured reserve before he returned in late December and appeared in two games at the end of the year.

Released by the Eagles the following preseason, Anderson was claimed by New York and spent the 2022 season with the Giants, appearing in 12 games and making two starts at guard. He signed a one-year contract extension with the team in February 2023 but was released six months later, steering him to join the Colts’ practice squad.

In total, Anderson has made 14 appearances over three seasons in the NFL, having logged 64 snaps at left guard, 50 snaps at center and 106 snaps at right guard.

Colts are reportedly releasing OL Jack Anderson

The Colts are reportedly releasing offensive lineman Jack Anderson, leaving them with an open roster spot. Here is what you need to know.

The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly releasing offensive lineman Jack Anderson, according to Tom Pelissero.

Anderson was a seventh-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2021 and has since bounced around. Between time with Philadelphia in 2021 and the New York Giants in 2022, Anderson has played 229 career offensive snaps at both guard and center positions.

After being waived by the Giants prior to Week 1 of last season, Anderson was signed to the Colts practice squad and then to the active roster in late October. Anderson appeared in one game, playing six special teams snaps for the Colts in 2023.

The offensive line is a position group for the Colts that has become quite crowded, leaving Anderson as the odd man out.

The Colts are returning all five starters from last season, along with spending draft third and fourth-round draft picks on Matt Goncalves and Tanor Bortolini. They also have Wesley French, Josh Sills, and Danny Pinter on the roster as well, among others.

Releasing Anderson now leaves the Colts with an open roster spot. For what it’s worth, they did have six players in for tryouts during minicamp and could potentially fill their roster void by signing one of them. To learn more about the tryout candidates, click here.

Colts re-sign G Jack Anderson

The Colts brought back Jack Anderson on a one-year deal.

The Indianapolis Colts signed guard Jack Anderson to a contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, it’s a one-year deal for Anderson.

Anderson appeared in one game for the Colts during the 2023 season but spent the majority of the campaign on the practice squad and the injured list due to a calf injury he suffered with the New York Giants during the preseason.

He returned to the practice squad in October when he became healthy. Anderson can play both guard positions while providing some depth at center, and he’ll fight for a roster spot throughout the spring and summer.
