Steph Curry on a potential early March return from injury: ‘That’s the plan’

In a sideline interview during the Warriors game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Stephen Curry said he’s setting his return to action goal of early March.

Over the past week, the NBA trade deadline has dominated all headlines regarding the Golden State Warriors, and rightfully so. The Warriors traded All-Star guard D’Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a blockbuster deal that shook the NBA world.

24-year-old swingman, Andrew Wiggins, and a pair of 2021 draft picks came back to Golden State in the four-player mega deal. Beyond the transaction with the Timberwolves, the Warriors traded a total of six players before the deadline expired.

With Russell gone and the second half of the season underway, all eyes shift to the return of Stephen Curry.

Curry’s only played in the first four games of the 2019-20 season, missing a significant amount of time with a broken left hand. Although his recovery has been long, the two-time Most Valuable Player is progressing towards a return to the court.

Golden State re-evaluated Curry in early February with reports pointing towards a March return from injury. In a sideline interview on ESPN’s broadcast of the Warriors game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Curry was asked if he’s hoping to be back by early March.

That’s the plan — it’s been the plan since surgery knowing the timeline with the injury as severe as it was — I’m not rushing, but I’m setting a goal that hopefully I can meet — first week of March to get back out on the floor with my teammates and hopefully end the season on a strong note.

With the Warriors record sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference, Golden State could be patient with Curry, even if he’s healthy. However, an early March return would give the All-Star guard around 20 games left on the season to build chemistry with his newest teammate, Wiggins.

Russell Westbrook could return from thumb sprain vs. Lakers

After missing Tuesday’s game with a thumb sprain, All-Star guard Russell Westbrook could return to the Rockets’ lineup versus the Lakers.

After missing Tuesday’s victory over Charlotte due to a sprained left thumb, All-Star guard Russell Westbrook could return to the Houston Rockets’ lineup in time for Thursday night’s showdown at Los Angeles.

In the team’s official injury report issued late Wednesday, Westbrook was listed as questionable due to the thumb injury. That’s an upgrade from his “doubtful” status prior to Tuesday, and since there’s no mention of rest, it does not appear that Thursday is one of his scheduled rest games.

In 35.9 minutes per game this season, Westbrook is averaging 26.4 points (45.4% shooting), 8.0 rebounds, and 7.4 assists with the Rockets.

Westbrook sprained the thumb on his non-dominant hand during Sunday’s game against New Orleans. Speaking postgame, he said a Pelicans player accidentally swiped at it while going for the basketball.

Westbrook had the thumb heavily bandaged immediately after Sunday’s game. But at Monday’s practice and during Tuesday’s game, which the former MVP watched from the bench, there was no sign of a wrap or brace — which would seem to indicate that the issue is minor.

Head coach Mike D’Antoni indicated Tuesday that Westbrook would sit out one game of the upcoming back-to-back in Los Angeles and Phoenix on Thursday and Friday, but for reasons unrelated to his left thumb. That’s part of the 31-year-old’s season-long maintenance plan after undergoing offseason knee surgery.

When asked which game Westbrook would play in, D’Antoni told reporters with a sarcastic tone:

You could probably take a wild guess.

That would certainly appear to be a clue that the team’s plan, at least as of Tuesday, was for Westbrook to play.

Westbrook is a Los Angeles native, and Thursday’s game against the Lakers (38-11) offers an opportunity for the Rockets (32-18) to measure themselves on national television against the Western Conference’s premiere team to this point in the 2019-20 season.

Houston enters Thursday having won six of its last eight games. Tip-off from Staples Center is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Central time, with the game broadcast as a national exclusive on TNT.

Injury Report: D’Angelo Russell expected to play in homecoming game vs. Nets

D’Angelo Russell is expected to return from a quad contusion against the Brooklyn Nets.

While trade deadline news leads to many headlines, the Golden State Warriors still have basketball games on the schedule. To end their five-game road trip, the Warriors will travel to Brooklyn for a chance at winning three-consecutive games.

Helping the Warriors odds at heading back to San Francisco with a winning road trip is the return of D’Angelo Russell. Russell missed Golden State’s game in Washington with a quad contusion, but the team was able to seal a victory without him.

Alec Burks led the team in scoring without Russell in Washington, dropping 30-points off the bench. Sophomore guard Jacob Evans III started in the Louisville native’s spot as he dealt with a quad injury.

Against Kyrie Irving, Spencer Dinwiddie and the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State could use the talent of Russell.

According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, after a full practice, Russell is expected to play against Brooklyn.

Wednesday night would be Russell’s first appearance in Brooklyn, where he spent two seasons before coming to Golden State. Last season Russell led the Brooklyn Nets to a playoff bid in the Eastern Conference while also netting an All-Star nod. With the Nets, Russell averaged 21.1 points and 7.0 assists per game in 81 contests.

With Golden State, Russell has taken over as Steve Kerr’s offensive initiator, leading the team in scoring with 23.8 points per game while adding 6.3 assists. The former Ohio State Buckeye is shooting 43.3 % from the field and 38.3 % from beyond the arc.

If Golden State does decide to move Russell by the Thursday trade deadline, a homecoming date in Brooklyn could be his last game as a member of the Warriors.

Injury Report; D’Angelo Russell (quad contusion) ruled out vs. Wizards

D’Angelo Russell will miss the third game of the Warriors’ five-game road trip in Washington with a quad contusion.

Since the start of the 2020 New Year, the Golden State Warriors have mightily struggled, losing 13-of-15 games. Yet, the team looked to be turning things around with a win 131-115 win in Cleveland amid their five-game east coast road swing.

However, for the Warriors, things got tougher in game three of the trip in Washington. D’Angelo Russell has been ruled out against the Wizards with a quad contusion.

Washington will be Russell’s 19th game of the season he’s missed due to injury. A flurry of different ailments has taken the former Eastern Conference All-Star out of games this season, including a shoulder, thumb, ankle and now quad injury. With their leading scorer out of Steve Kerr’s rotation, the Warriors have managed only three wins on 18 attempts.

Second-year guard, Jacob Evans III will start in Russell’s place in Washington. Draymond Green and Alec Burks should also see an increase in ball-handling responsibilities as the Warriors try to win two-straight games.

Injury Report: Warriors ‘hopeful’ Stephen Curry can return in March

The Golden State Warriors provided an update to the timetable for Stephen Curry’s return from his broken hand injury.

From the minute Stephen Curry broke his hand early in the season against the Pheonix Suns, fans of the Golden State Warriors have patiently been waiting for the calendar to flip to the month of February.

February was the target month for an official update on Curry’s injury, and true to their word, the Golden State Warriors laid out a new timetable for his recovery. Still, more waiting is on the horizon.

Curry has missed all but four games for Golden State during the 2019-20 NBA season, and that number will continue to grow.

Golden State announced Curry would be re-evaluated again in four weeks. Yet, they are hopeful he can “return to action at some point in March.”

The two-time Most Valuable Player has been rapidly progressing through his rehab lately, appearing everywhere you look with the Warriors. Curry was recently cleared to travel with the Warriors on the road and was spotted going through a pregame warm-up before Golden State tipped off against the Boston Celtics.

With the Warriors having lost 15 of their last 16 games and owners of the worst record in the NBA, expect Golden State to continue taking the cautious approach.

Getting him back on the floor next to D’Angelo Russell will help Bob Myers and Steve Kerr get a better look at Golden State’s potential backcourt of the future. However, beyond shaking off the rust and gaining comfort next to Russell, patience is key with Curry’s injury.

If Curry was able to return March 1, he would be eligible to play in the Warriors’ final 22 games on the season.

Watch: Injured Steph Curry does pregame shooting warm-up in Boston

Stephen Curry is still rehabbing from his broken hand injury, but before the Warriors tipped off against the Boston Celtics he went through a shooting warmup.

As the Warriors started their five-game road trip with a pair of losses, Golden State got a quick dose of positive news from one of their injured “Splash Brothers.” Before tipping off against the Boston Celtics, a familiar face joined the pregame festivities.

Stephen Curry is still rehabbing his broken hand. Yet, during the month of January, the two-time Most Valuable Player has made progress with his injury that’s kept him out all but four games this season.

Curry has been traveling with the team and participating in shooting workouts since having the pins removed from his surgically repaired hand. The injured All-Star took another step in his rehab on Thursday in Boston.

Before the game started, Curry was running around the court, going through a pregame shooting warmup. Warriors assistant coach Bruce Fraser was working with Curry, guarding him throughout the workout.

Before Curry wrapped up his pregame workout, he was spotted knocking down some of his signature long-distance shots.

Curry is scheduled to have his hand evaluated by the Warriors in February, with a report from Marcus Thompson III of The Athletic saying he could return in March.

In the meantime, seeing Curry off the bench and back in his natural habitat, launching three-pointers is a positive sign for a struggling Golden State Warriors’ squad.

Jacob Evans sent to hospital after taking elbow to face vs. Mavericks

Jacob Evans took a trip to the hospital after taking a scary elbow against the Dallas Mavericks.

As each day turns on the calendar, another injury pops up for the Golden State Warriors. Whether it’s at the top of the roster with D’Angelo Russell, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, or the bottom of the rotation, hits keep coming to the Golden State Warriors.

The latest injury came in the second quarter against the Dallas Mavericks when Jacob Evans left the game after taking an elbow directly to the face. Evans was rattled after catching an inadvertent elbow from Mavericks forward, Dwight Powell.

Evans went down on the floor for a few minutes before being escorted to the locker room with team trainers. Evans was able to walk to the locker room slowly with help after taking the violent elbow to the face.

There’s been no official report on what injury Evans sustained from the hit. However, the Warriors did take him from Chase Center in San Francisco to the hospital. According to the Golden State Warriors’ public relations staff, Evans’s trip to the hospital is for further testing.

More updates will follow on the injury to the second-year guard.

Injury Report: D’Angelo Russell and Draymond Green ruled out vs. Kings

The Warriors will be without another pair of All-Star talents against the Sacramento Kings.

As the Golden State Warriors season progresses into the new year, their already lengthy injury report grows longer. Golden State has already been without Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevon Looney for a majority of the 2019-20 season. Against the Sacramento Kings, another pair of All-Stars will be out with injury.

D’Angelo Russell (shoulder) and Draymond Green (ankle) have both been ruled out for the Warriors matchup in California’s state capital against the Kings.

Monday will mark Russell’s fourth consecutive game the former All-Star will miss with a shoulder injury that he suffered against the Dallas Mavericks last week. Russell collided with Luka Doncic late in the game and has been hampered with a nagging shoulder since.

Before the Warriors tipped off against the Detroit Pistons over the weekend, Steve Kerr said he would “expect” the Louisville, Kentucky native to be ready for their matchup with the Kings. Still, Golden State is being cautious with their 23-year-old point guard, holding him out another game.

Russell returned to practice Sunday; however, he will still miss the Dubs matchup with their Northen California rival.

Green will join Russell on the bench with an ankle injury that caused him to sit out from practice over the weekend. The former Defensive Player of the Year was ejected in the Warriors in Saturday night tilt against the Pistons. Green’s already missed eight games this season with a sore heel and a finger injury.

Alec Burks has carried Golden State with Russell injured, scoring 28 and 27 on different nights. Behind Burks, Glenn Robinson III has also played well with Russell out, dropping 25 against the San Antonio Spurs on New Year’s Eve.

With Green ejected against the Pistons, Spellman turned in one of his best games as a member of Golden State. The Villanova product added 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including a perfect night from beyond the arc on four attempts.

Without Green and Russell, Kerr will have to continue to rely on Burks, Robinson III and Spellman.

DJ Chark week-to-week with ankle injury, Ronnie Harrison ready to return from concussion

DJ Chark Jr. will be week-to-week after injuring his ankle Sunday against the Chargers.

As expected, Jacksonville Jaguars safety Ronnie Harrison will be good to take the field for Week 15’s game against the Oakland Raiders after missing the team’s last two games. Doug Marrone told the media that the second-year safety cleared the concussion protocol in Monday’s conference call, which is a big positive as the Jags’ defense struggled in the backfield Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

[lawrence-related id=27329]

Marrone also provided an update on receiver DJ Chark, who was seen leaving the locker room in a boot and on a scooter after sustaining an injury Sunday against the Chargers.

Harrison sustained his injury in the first quarter of the Jags’ Week 12’s game against the Tennessee Titans after making a tackle on tight end MyCole Pruitt. As a result of the injury, the Jags thrusted Andrew Wingard into Harrison’s role, giving the undrafted rookie two starts.

Chark, on the other hand, sustained his injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Chargers while defensive back Jaylen Watkins was making a tackle on him. In the process of trying to get extra yardage and fight through the tackle, Chark seemingly injured his ankle and was helped to the locker room after being ruled questionable on the night.

LB Myles Jack and CB Tre Herndon ruled questionable vs. Bucs, 2 others ruled out

The Jags may have to face the Bucs’ explosive passing attack down three players on the back seven.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without several members of their back seven Sunday against the Tampa Bay Bucs as multiple players from the group were on the final injury report. The most notable name on the list was starting MIKE LB Myles Jack (knee), who was ruled questionable alongside starting cornerback Tre Herndon (shoulder).

Both Jack and Herndon were limited Friday. However, Jack missed Wednesday and Thursday’s practice. If neither or just one player can go, the Jags could find themselves in a bad situation as the Bucs’ offense is ranked fourth in passing and third in points.

The Jags will also be without safety Ronnie Harrison Sunday after he sustained a concussion against the Tennessee Titans Week 12. He was in the process of bringing down Titans tight end MyCole Pruitt and incidentally collided with teammate Jarrod Wilson on the way down. As a result, he didn’t practice all week.

The last player listed on the injury report was tight end Seth DeValve (oblique), who has missed the Jags’ previous two games. Once again, he didn’t practice all week and fans will have to wait until next week for a possible return.
