Cardinals free agent outlook: TE Seth DeValve

A look at the Cardinals’ late-season addition to the roster in 2020 and whether he could return in 2021.

One of the Arizona Cardinals’ many unrestricted free agents this offseason is tight end Seth DeValve. Will he be back in 2021?

DeValve was part of the revolving doors of back-of-the-roster tight ends in 2020 for the Cardinals. With Maxx Williams dealing with an ankle injury almost the entire season, they used the practice squad to elevate tight ends almost weekly. First it was Jordan Thomas, then it was Evan Baylis and then it was DeValve in the month of December.

He appeared in four games for Arizona and played sparingly. He had 48 snaps on offense and 52 on special teams. He was targeted once in the passing game but did not have a catch.

He was a fourth-round draft pick in 2016 by the Cleveland Browns and actually caught 33 passes for 395 yards and a score in 2017, but has bounced around since 2019. He has spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers and Cardinals.

Had the Cardinals been healthy at the position, DeValve likely never is signed. Now he is a free agent and he will likely garner, at best, a one-year minimum deal from some team. Considering he was not on a roster in 2020 until the Cardinals elevated him from the practice squad, he likely will not be a priority.

The Cardinals will need bodies at tight end so it is possible he is brought back, but he shouldn’t be expected to make the team.

DeValve’s 2021 return: possible but not likely

Cardinals protect K Mike Nugent, 3 others on practice squad in Week 16

They protect Nugent, TE Seth DeValve, DL Michael Dogbe and LB Terrance Smith. All four have played in games this season.

The Arizona Cardinals do not currently have a kicker on their roster, as Zane Gonzalez was placed on injured reserve last week. Mike Nugent, who handled kicking duties the last two weeks, has reverted to the practice squad.

To make sure Nugent is available to kick on Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16, the team protected him and three others from being signed by other teams this week.

According to the league transaction report, the Cardinals protected the following players:

  • K Mike Nugent
  • TE Seth DeValve
  • DL Michael Dogbe
  • LB Terrance Smith

Nugent will kick for the Cardinals this weekend. He will be brought up before the game. DeValve has been elevated to the active roster for games twice this season. With Maxx Williams and Darrell Daniels both injured and day-to-day, the Cardinals might need him again this weekend.

Dogbe has been protected multiple weeks this season and has been elevated three times this season to the roster.

Smith was elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He played on special teams. Since linebacker Kylie Fitts is recovering from a hamstring injury that kept him out of Sunday’s game, protecting Smith ensures that role is filled.

K Mike Nugent among 4 protected practice squad players for Cardinals in Week 15

Zane Gonzalez’ back injury means Nugent could get elevated for the second week in a row and kick for Arizona against the Philadelphia Eagles.

[jwplayer PYICt2Gr-ThvAeFxT]

The Arizona Cardinals, according to Tuesday’s NFL transaction report, have protected four players on the practice squad from being signed by another team during Week 15. Who are those players?

They are:

  • K Mike Nugent
  • TE Seth DeValve
  • DL Michael Dogbe
  • CB Jace Whittaker

Nugent and DeValve were the team’s two practice squad elevations for Sunday’s game. Kicker Zane Gonzalez suffered a back injury late last week and was unable to play. His status is currently uncertain for this week, so the Cardinals want to ensure they have a kicker on the roster for their contest in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Nugent made all four of his field-goal attempts against the New York Giants and both of his extra points.

DeValve has been protected two weeks in a row and elevated to be the team’s third tight end for game days.

Dogbe and Whittaker both have played this season as well. With Jordan Phillps reinjuring his hamstring, the Cardinals might need Dogbe this weekend. Phillips has already been ruled out for this week.

Cardinals sign TE to practice squad, hold tryouts for 2 players, including former QB Khalil Tate

Tate was a quarterback in college for the University of Arizona. He is converting to wide receiver.

The Arizona Cardinals made a minor move on the practice squad on Wednesday and needed it, as neither Maxx Williams nor Darrell Daniels was able to practice. Williams was ill and Daniels has an ankle injury.

They also held tryouts for two players, including one local sports fans will recognize from his college days.

Panthers release TE Seth DeValve from their practice squad

The team just announced on Twitter that they have released him from their practice squad.

Some things simply aren’t meant to be. The Carolina Panthers and tight end Seth DeValve might just be one of them. The team just announced on Twitter that they have released him from their practice squad.

DeValve was originally signed by Carolina in March with an eye on helping replace some of the depth the team lost when Greg Olsen was suddenly released. DeValve didn’t last long, though. He was cut early in June due to a non-football injury. The Panthers brought DeValve back two weeks ago for a spot on their practice squad.

It’s possible that the recent practice-squad signing of Tommy Stevens made DeValve expendable. While they listed him as a quarterback to announce the news, Stevens also has some previous experience playing tight end.

There’s also a chance that more moves could be coming. In addition to Stevens, the team also hosted linebacker Daniel Bituli last week.

Panthers re-sign TE Seth DeValve to their practice squad

The Panthers just announced they have re-signed tight end Seth DeValve to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers’ tight end situation is every bit as murky today as it was when Greg Olsen was released back in late January. So, the team is bringing in some extra help for more depth.

The Panthers just announced that they have re-signed tight end Seth DeValve to their practice squad.

DeValve was signed by Carolina in March. He didn’t stick around long, though. In June he was released after he suffered a non-football injury.

DeValve (6-foot-3, 245 pounds) has played in 53 career games, mostly with the Browns. He spent the 2019 season with the Jaguars, catching 12 passes and totaling 140 yards.

Panthers release tight end Seth DeValve

According to a report by David Newton at ESPN, it’s due to a non football injury.

Tight end was already one of the thinnest positions on the Panthers roster. On Wednesday, it got a little thinner when the team released the recently-signed Seth DeValve. According to a report by David Newton at ESPN, it’s due to a non football injury.

After spending three years with the Browns and then one with the Jaguars, DeValve signed a one-year deal with the Panthers in late March. We had projected him to be the No. 3 tight end on the depth chart behind Ian Thomas and Chris Manhertz.

The team will probably look to sign another tight end before the season begins. For now, this gives players like the undrafted rookie Cam Sutton a better chance at making the team.

NFL free agency: Former Jags TE Seth DeValve heading to Panthers

Former Jags TE Seth DeValve has found a new home with the Carolina Panthers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars entered this offseason with a need for a veteran tight end and have yet to sign one. However, they did officially lose one from their 2019 roster as the Carolina Panthers came to terms with veteran tight end Seth DeValve.

DeValve, 27, joined the Jags last September off the waiver wire after just missing the cut to be on the Cleveland Browns final 53-man roster. He participated in 12 games for the team and started in six due to their variety of injuries the team sustained at tight end. He was able to accumulate 12 catches for 140 yards in the process.

The loss of DeValve, albeit at tight end, won’t hurt the Jags all that much. Still, it will be interesting to see what they do at the position, which is clearly one of the most important for a quarterback. They’ll have players like James O’Shaughnessy and Josh Oliver returning from injured reserve but it still feels like the Jags should look to add some help in the near future.

There isn’t much on the open market but veterans Tyler Eifert, Jordan Reed, and Delanie Walker could be solid contributors if healthy. In terms of the draft, some names to watch are Thaddeus Moss, Adam Trautman, and Brycen Hopkins, all of whom could be options past round one this April.

Report: Panthers agree to terms with former Browns TE Seth DeValve

According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Panthers have agreed to terms with former Browns and Jaguars tight end Seth DeValve.

According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the Panthers have agreed to terms with former Browns and Jaguars tight end Seth DeValve.

Cleveland picked DeValve (6-foot-3, 235 pounds) in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. He put in three years and 41 games with the Browns, totaling 48 catches, 596 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, DeValve suited up for Jacksonville. In 12 games, he posted 12 catches and 140 yards.

In addition to his work on offense, DeValve has been a minor player on special teams, totaling 575 snaps over the years.

This move adds more depth at the tight end position, which took a serious hit when Greg Olsen was released recently. For now, Ian Thomas doesn’t have to worry about his status as the top option on the team. Given Carolina’s overall lack of depth and talent at this spot, Chris Manhertz is also safe.

It’s possible the Panthers had their eye on former Colts tight end Eric Ebron, who signed earlier today with the Steelers. Most likely he was out of their price range though, because if one thing’s clear it’s that this team is not looking to be big spenders this month.

DeValve is the second former Brown to be signed so far. Carolina has also inked safety Juston Burris to a two-year deal and apparently the plan is for him to start next to Tre Boston.

Jags Week 14 inactives: Safety Ronnie Harrison to sit vs. Chargers

Jags safety Ronnie Harrison was close to returning from his Week 12 concussion, but will be held out against the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday.

For the second consecutive week, Jacksonville Jaguars safety Ronnie Harrison won’t be active as the team takes on the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday. The second-year safety seemingly hasn’t been cleared to return from the concussion he sustained Week 12 against the Tennessee Titans, so the Jags will roll with Andrew Wingard once again in his place.

The remainder of the Jags’ inactives against the Chargers are as follows:

It appeared as though Harrison had a chance to play after practicing Friday on a limited basis and being ruled questionable, but they instead will look to get him back healthy Week 15.

The other player to surface in the status column of Friday’s injury report, Seth DeValve, will also be inactive Sunday. He’s currently in the process of returning from an oblique injury that has sidelined him since before the Jags’ Week 11 game against the Indianapolis Colts. He was ruled doubtful after practicing on a limited basis Friday, so it appears he’s closing in on a return soon, too.

As for the Chargers’ inactives, they had one notable surface on their list in starting linebacker Denzel Perryman.

The rest of their inactives are as follows:
