Broncos could get reinforcement from injured reserve this week

Broncos RB Tyler Badie (back) has until Jan. 14 to return from injured reserve.

Denver Broncos running back Tyler Badie (back) returned to practice last week, starting his 21-day window to return from injured reserve.

Badie now has until Jan. 14 to be activated to the 53-man roster. If the running back is not activated by that deadline, he will remain on IR for the rest of Denver’s season.

The Broncos previously brought back six other players from injury lists this fall. Since-traded pass rusher Baron Browning, offensive tackle, Mike McGlinchey, cornerback Damarri Mathis, running back Audric Estime and center Luke Wattenberg returned from IR earlier this season. Denver also activated linebacker Drew Sanders from the physically unable to perform list.

The Broncos opted to cut wide receiver Josh Reynolds when his IR window was closing, and the team chose to keep safety Delarrin Turner-Yell on the PUP list for the rest of the season.

Broncos eligible to return from IR

  1. RB Tyler Badie: Deadline to return: Jan. 14

The Broncos also have two players — linebacker Alex Singleton (ACL) and offensive lineman Quinn Bailey (ankle) — who are on season-ending IR.

Broncos on season-ending injured reserve

  1. LB Alex Singleton: Out for season
  2. OL Quinn Bailey: Out for season

NFL teams can have eight players return from IR during a season, and teams who make the playoffs are granted two extra potential returns.

Pat Jones II injury vs Packers: Latest news on Vikings OLB

Minnesota Vikings’ outside linebacker Pat Jones II was injured in the first half against the Green Bay Packers and is questionable to return

The Minnesota Vikings are playing their biggest game of the season so far, with their position in both the NFC North and the NFC playoff picture on the line against their division rivals, the Green Bay Packers. So far, it’s been mostly smooth sailing for the Vikings, as they have the lead in the second quarter.

However, it hasn’t been all good for the Vikings, as they may be without one of their pass rushers for the remainder of the game. Outside linebacker Pat Jones II took a shot to the legs from Packers tight end Tucker Kraft and went down immediately.

Pat Jones II injury update

After the low hit from Kraft — which was technically a legal block, as the contact occurred inside the tackle box — Jones was down on the field for several minutes while being attended to by the Vikings’ medical staff. Jones eventually left the field under his own power for further evaluation.

After further evaluation, Jones has officially been listed as questionable to return to the game with a knee injury.

How long will Jones be out?

Jones was seen limping on the sidelines, but didn’t seem to be in a terrible amount of discomfort. He was able to put some weight on the leg at the very least, so it’s like that his “questionable” designation is more out of an abundance of caution than the severity of the injury.

We’ll keep you updated on Jones’ condition if it comes out that the knee injury will impact his availability heading into next week’s season finale against the Detroit Lions

Vikings outside linebacker depth chart

With Jones questionable to return to the game, it shouldn’t impact the Vikings’ defensive gameplan terribly much. Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel are the main outside linebackers and will continue to be. The injury affects the rotation, meaning those two may be on the field more today than initially planned.

The injury could also open the door for more playing time for players like Jihad Ward and the first-round draft pick Dallas Turner.

Darren Rizzi short on details in postgame injury report

New Orleans Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi was short on details for injuries to Jaylan Ford, Kendre Miller, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling after Sunday’s game:

The New Orleans Saints picked up some additional injuries during their Week 17 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. During his media availability postgame, interim head coach Darren Rizzi spoke about the three injuries, and what they were for each player.

However, he was definitely short on details at this time, providing minimal context for each one at the moment likely due to evaluations still being ongoing.

Regarding the injuries, Rizzi said: “Unfortunately suffered a couple injuries in the game. Kendre Miller, as you know, went out with a concussion. (Marquez Valdes-Scantling) went out there at the end, he’s getting checked on, really I think it was a re-aggravation of the same (chest) injury he had last week, we’ll see what happens. Jaylan Ford got a lower leg injury there on that punt cover, so we’ll kind of see where he is at.”

Ultimately the details are limited at the moment as players receive their evaluations, so we will see in the coming days who is ready to go for the Week 18 finale and who is unable to suit up.

Is Riley Moss playing today? Injury updates for Broncos CB

Broncos CB Riley Moss (knee) is poised to return to the lineup against the Bengals today.

Denver Broncos second-year cornerback Riley Moss went down with a knee injury against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12 and he did not play in the team’s last three games. Here are the latest updates on Moss’ MCL status going into Week 17.

Riley Moss injury update

Moss fully participated in all three days of practice this week and he has no injury designation going into Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. “He’s doing good,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said after Thursday’s practice. “He’ll be ready to go.”

How long will Riley Moss be out?

Moss is poised to return for Saturday’s game against the Bengals. “He’s got an awfully competitive juice,” Payton said. “I would say you definitely felt his absence. Not just physically as a player, but also his presence.” Moss is expected to be back in the lineup against Cincy.

Broncos cornerback depth chart

Kris Abrams-Draine filled in for Moss over the last two games with Damarri Mathis getting rotational snaps. Moss is now poised to start across from Pat Surtain against the Bengals with Ja’Quan McMillian playing in the slot. Abrams-Draine and Mathis will provide depth, and special teams ace Tremon Smith rounds out the cornerback room.

The 49ers offensive line has major injury issues of its own

The Lions will face a 49ers offensive line that could be starting two tackles signed off practice squads this week

Heading into the Week 17 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions have been dealing with major injury issues across the defense–notably on the line. The 49ers have also been devastated by injuries all season, too.

For Monday night’s game, the focus for the 49ers injuries is the offensive line. As is the case for the Lions missing three starters on the defensive line (Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, Marcus Davenport), the Niners too look to be without three starting offensive linemen.

Left tackle Trent Williams, an 11-time Pro Bowler, is now on injured reserve with an ankle injury. That’s the biggest blow, akin to the Lions losing Penei Sewell. The Niners are 1-6 without Williams in the last two seasons.

Right tackle Colton McKivitz missed Friday’s practice with a knee injury and it doesn’t look promising for the Monday night game. Left guard Aaron Banks injured his knee in the 49ers’ Week 16 loss to the Dolphins and is also out for the season.

The only regular starters are center Jake Brendel and right guard Dominick Puni, a fourth-round rookie who has played quite well.

Williams’ regular backup, Jaylon Moore, is also dealing with a quad injury and isn’t expected to play. Spencer Burford would be the next man up, but he’s out too. Another reserve, Ben Bartch, is also on injured reserve. San Francisco’s tackles for the game against the Lions could very well be Charlie Heck and Austen Pleasants. They signed Heck off the Cardinals practice squad just this week, while Pleasants had joined the 49ers practice squad earlier this month.

Alvin Kamara has a shot to return in time for Week 18

Alvin Kamara isn’t playing this Sunday, but he has a shot at returning in Week 18 with his first 1,000-yard season in reach:

The New Orleans Saints are at a point where injured players should rest their bodies, because the team doesn’t have much to play for collectively. That sentiment applies to Derek Carr and Chris Olave, but it doesn’t apply to Alvin Kamara.

What makes Kamara different? Kamara is 50 yards away from his first season with 1,000 rushing yards. He has a clear and valuable objective he can hit. Carr’s version of that would have been playing the Las Vegas Raiders this week.

Darren Rizzi told reporters the running back has “a very realistic shot” at playing next week, and that Kamara has the mindset of wanting to get back on the field.

Kamara has been one of the best running backs in the NFL, but that century mark has eluded him. He deserves every chance to hit that number. 50 yards is attainable. If he is healthy enough to play against the Buccaneers, Kamara should play. Those last 50 yards should be a priority for New Orleans.

Broncos rule out RB, elevate WR and DL from practice squad

The Broncos have ruled out RB Tyler Badie (back) for Saturday’s game against the Bengals.

The Denver Broncos made an update to their injury report on Friday, ruling out running back Tyler Badie (back) for Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Baide returned to practice earlier this week, starting his 21-day window to return from injured reserve. If Badie is not activated to the 53-man roster within three weeks, he will remain on IR for the rest of Denver’s season.

Everybody else on the injury report is good to go for Week 17, including cornerback Riley Moss (knee), who missed the team’s last three games.

Elsewhere on the roster front for Denver, the team plans to elevate wide receiver David Sills from the practice squad to the game-day roster, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

The Broncos will also elevate defensive lineman Matt Henningsen from the practice squad, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson. Sills and Henningsen will revert back to the practice squad after Saturday’s game.

As for the Bengals, wide receiver Tee Higgins (ankle/knee) is listed as questionable, but “there’s optimism” he will be able to play, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The Broncos’ final injury report can be seen below.

Player Tue Wed Thur Game Status
RB Tyler Badie (back) Full Full Full Out
WR Troy Franklin (ankle) Full Full Full
CB Riley Moss (knee) Full Full Full
RB Jaleel McLaughlin (quad) Limited Full Full

Saturday’s game will be televised on NFL Network. Denver is considered an underdog playing on the road this week. With two games remaining, the Broncos need one win (or tie) to clinch a spot in the NFL playoffs.

Opinion: Saints should sit Chris Olave for the remainder of the season

Chris Olave has returned as a full participant at practice, but he shouldn’t play another game for the Saints this season. His long-term health is more important:

The Dallas Cowboys shut down CeeDee Lamb for the final weeks of the season due to a shoulder injury, and if they’re smart, the New Orleans Saints should take a page out of their book and shut down their top receiver, too. Dallas is out of playoff contention, just like New Orleans, but Chris Olave is practicing unlike Lamb.

Olave was projected as a full participant on Wednesday’s injury report. That was Christmas Day, so there was no practice which meant it was the expectation from the team medical staff. The projection was accurate, and Olave was a full participant when the Saints stepped out for Thursday’s practice. Olave remains on injured reserve.

New Orleans opened Olave’s return window last week, and he began practicing. This feels like the progression to returning to the field. If it isn’t, then it brings up one question. What’s the point of him practicing?

Is this supposed to be a sign of his progress? Darren Rizzi telling media Olave was good enough to play would have sufficed. But there’s something to be said for letting him run routes at practice and get his legs back under him before the season ends. That beats watching his teammates work from the sideline.

Olave suffered two concussions this season, and this is becoming a repeated occurrence for the young player. The last concussion was a scary one. This is a situation that has to be treated delicately.

New Orleans doesn’t have anything to play for as a team, and he’s in a much more comfortable place than other young players. This feels like a time to sit Olave down even if he’s pushing to play.

Darren Rizzi says Saints’ starting offensive lineman likely done for the year

Erik McCoy’s injury-riddled season continues, and the New Orleans Saints’ starting center is likely out for the season:

Erik McCoy went down with an elbow injury against the Green Bay Packers, and Monday night’s loss will likely be the last time we have seen him suit up in 2024. Week 16 was the third time the New Orleans Saints center had to leave a contest due to injury.

Darren Rizzi was straightforward about McCoy’s outlook: “I don’t see Erik coming back right now.”

McCoy originally injured his groin in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles. That was the beginning of the most injury riddled season of his career.

In his first game back from a seven game absence, McCoy had to leave again with a groin injury. It was a slight re-aggravation that led to him missing the following week’s game. The elbow injury in Week 16 isn’t major, but with just two weeks remaining in the season, however, it was the coup de grâce.

On a positive note, McCoy’s injury won’t require surgery. Expect Shane Lemieux to fill in for McCoy for the remainder of the season.
