49ers injury news: Kyle Shanahan expecting George Kittle, Arik Armstead return to practice

Kyle Shanahan expects good news for the #49ers on the injury front.

The 49ers practices during the Super Bowl bye week came with a small concern about a couple injuries to key players. Neither tight end George Kittle nor Arik Armstead participated in the two sessions the team held over its extra week between the NFC championship and the Super Bowl. It sounds like any concern was alleviated in the days since their last practice.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday in a press conference said he’s anticipating full participation from both Kittle and Armstead on Wednesday when the team is required to issue a practice participation report.

“I am, but since I didn’t have to give a report today I haven’t talked to the trainers yet,” Shanahan said. “But, I’m expecting it to be pretty positive.”

Kittle is dealing with a toe injury he suffered in the NFC championship game. Armstead was listed as a non-participant last week with knee and foot injuries he’s been battling for a few weeks.

Both Kittle and Armstead are crucial to San Francisco’s success on both sides of the ball. Whether they practice in full matters less than their availability for the Super Bowl, but the full participation is a good indicator that they’ll be able to suit up Sunday.

Brock Purdy injury was only reason 49ers considered signing Tom Brady

Not even Tom Brady was going to supplant a healthy Brock Purdy for the #49ers.

Tom Brady’s name has surfaced as a possible option for the 49ers under center every time he’s been even remotely available. San Francisco tried trading for him in 2017, could have signed him in 2019, and then considered adding him again for the 2023 campaign.

Brock Purdy first relayed the story of the team’s Tom Brady pursuit in a piece by ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. Purdy essentially said head coach Kyle Shanahan told the young QB he was the team’s signal caller, unless Brady wanted to play there.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Shanahan clarified how this interaction went in Peter King’s most recent Football Morning in America column. He said Purdy’s injury was the only reason Brady was under consideration for the 49ers.

“I mean, if Brock never got hurt, this wouldn’t have been a consideration at all,” Shanahan told King. “I’d never have brought it up. But I’ve got to think about the team. What if he’s not ready in September?”

It’s easy to forget that Purdy’s availability was in serious question early in the offseason. His surgery to repair his torn UCL didn’t take place until mid-March, and his recovery timeline was a huge question mark. Initial estimates had him missing a full year. Others put it closer to nine months, putting Purdy on track for a late-season return.

The surgery and Purdy’s subsequent rehab wound up allowing him to return for the start of training camp and his status as the team’s starter was never really in question once it was clear he’d be ready to take live game reps by Week 1.

The revelation here isn’t that the 49ers considered Brady. Even at 45 in the 2022 season Brady was an excellent player, and adding the best QB to ever put on pads has to be a consideration for any team. The revelation is that Shanahan only would’ve considered him due to Purdy’s injury.

While public sentiment on Purdy is still polarizing, it’s clear Shanahan is all-in on Purdy as a franchise QB – so much so that not even Tom Brady could supplant him as long as he was healthy.

Washington HS athletic department sees punches thrown at basketball game, injuries in running drill

A Shelton High School girls basketball player got into a brawl on the court, and a running drill at school allegedly resulted in injuries.

Punches were thrown during a girls high school basketball game in Washington on Jan. 31, the second incident involving the Shelton High School athletic department over the last couple weeks.

During the game between Shelton and Aberdeen, two players were going after the ball when a scuffle ensued. The video of the incident appears to show the Aberdeen player reaching around the Shelton player’s neck to go for the ball, and the Shelton player reacted defensively and aggressively by tackling the opponent and throwing three punches before a teammate pulled her off. Local podcast The Scrimmage posted the video onto social media platform X:

According to KIRO7, the Shelton player, who is 18 years old, was issued a criminal citation and will appear in front of a judge.

The player who was punched was evaluated for injury and able to return to the game, according to The Scrimmage. Aberdeen went on to win the game.

Just a day before, some parents at Shelton High School contacted KIRO7 about a different incident in which football players in a weight-lifting class took part in an “impromptu running drill.” Allegedly, the coach took student-athletes to the girls wrestling room to practice running the ball up the middle instead of taking it to the outside. In the drill, other students would tackle the person performing the drill, and there were allegedly no pads or helmets, parents who spoke to the outlet said.

Parents alleged that injuries included a concussion, a broken finger and a broken rib.

The police department told KIRO7 that it had not received any calls or reports about the incident.

Arik Armstead absent from 49ers’ 2nd Super Bowl practice

The #49ers practice participation for Thursday had a little bad news.

The 49ers on Thursday during their Super Bowl by week held a practice after not holding one Wednesday. Since they didn’t take the field for a Wednesday session they only issued a projected practice report, but that report had more good news than the one they issued following Thursday’s practice.

San Francisco still listed tight end George Kittle as a non-participant with a toe injury. That’s not a huge surprise since he’s day-to-day and time off makes more sense to ensure he’s healthy in time for the Super Bowl on Feb. 11. They also listed defensive tackle Arik Armstead as a non-participant because of foot and knee injuries. He was a full participant on the projected Wednesday report.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

It’s unclear whether Armstead had some sort of setback or if he just got an additional day off, but an absence after being listed as a full go is not a particularly positive sign.

The rest of the report looked the same, although Trent Williams was out due to rest Thursday.

Linebacker Oren Burks (shoulder) and cornerback Ambry Thomas (ankle) were still limited, while defensive tackle Kalia Davis (ankle) was still a full participant as he aims to be activated off Injured Reserve. His activation may come down to how Armstead’s health shakes out over the next week.

49ers practice report: TE George Kittle would have been out of 1st Super Bowl practice

George Kittle would’ve missed practice had the #49ers been on the field Wednesday:

The 49ers took Wednesday off as they gear up to begin on-field preparations for Super Bowl LVIII. Teams don’t treat the bye week before the big game as a typical bye where it’s a break from football. Instead it’s a week of preparation with a couple off days sprinkled in.

Wednesday was an off day, but teams are still required to release a practice report. Here’s San Francisco’s estimation of what a practice report would have looked like if they were on the field:

Broncos TE Greg Dulcich hopes to put injuries behind him in 2024

“The plan’s just going to be trying to get healthy and then just stay healthy and make sure I put this stuff behind me,” Greg Dulcich said.

After missing seven games due to injury as a rookie in 2022, Denver Broncos tight end Greg Dulcich missed all but two games in 2023 due to hamstring and foot injuries.

Now going into his third season, Dulcich is hoping to leave those injury woes behind him in 2024.

“The plan’s just going to be trying to get healthy and then just stay healthy and make sure I put this stuff behind me,” Dulcich said on Jan. 8, via Mike Klis of 9News.

After he recovered from a hamstring injury in 2023, Dulcich immediately injured his foot in practice. The tight end said he has “bony feet” and his cleat irritated his foot in a “really kinda freaky way,” which led to significant swelling. The Broncos then shut him down for the season.

It was a frustrating scenario for both Dulcich and the team because he had worked hard to recover from the lengthy hamstring injury.

“There’s a lot of factors, I think, that kinda could go into it, and that’s why we were trying to think of all the things and leave no stone unturned,” Dulcich said of his reoccurring hamstring injuries. “That was kind of the plan with, like, losing some weight — I mean, it worked, because my hamstring feels great, it was just [the foot].”

Dulcich has been healthy for 12 games over the last two seasons. He totaled 36 receptions for 436 yards and two touchdowns in those contests.

Now going into his third offseason, Dulcich’s hamstrings are healthy and his foot does not seem to be a long-term injury. The 23-year-old tight end will aim for the first healthy season of his career in 2024.

TE George Kittle, CB Ambry Thomas day-to-day with injuries after NFC championship

George Kittle is dealing with a toe injury after the NFC championship game. Christian McCaffrey appears to be okay. Updates from Kyle Shanahan’s Monday conference call:

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday gave an update on the team’s injury situation following evaluations after the NFC championship game.

Shanahan added tight end George Kittle to the group of players that was banged up Sunday night. Kittle sustained a toe injury and will be day-to-day in the lead up to the Super Bowl.

Cornerback Ambry Thomas left the game with an ankle injury. Shanahan mentioned him in his postgame press conference and said Monday that Thomas will also be day-to-day.

Not mentioned were linebacker Dre Greenlaw and running back Christian McCaffrey. Both players suffered stingers in the NFC championship, but didn’t have any lingering effects the following day.

It appears the 49ers will enter the Super Bowl with their health intact.

49ers injury updates after NFC championship game

Injury updates following the #49ers NFC championship game win:

The 49ers managed to get through the NFC championship game with a win, and without sustaining any major injuries.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan in his postgame press conference said linebacker Dre Greenlaw had a stinger and cornerback Ambry Thomas had an ankle issue. He also relayed that wide receiver Jauan Jennings cleared concussion protocol.

Both Greenlaw and Jennings returned to the game after briefly exiting. It’s unclear how severe Thomas’ ankle issue is.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

An injury Shanahan didn’t mention atop his press conference was running back Christian McCaffrey, who landed awkwardly on a carry late in the fourth quarter and didn’t return to the game. Shanahan said McCaffrey told him it was just a stinger.

“Yeah, he said he got a little bit of a stinger when he went down there,” Shanahan said. “That’s what his words were. He had to come out for a play. I know Elijah went in there and scored. At the end I knew Christian was good to go back.”

McCaffrey told reporters he was worried his stinger might impact his ability to hold onto the ball, which is why he didn’t take part in the team’s clock-killing drive to end the game.

There doesn’t seem to be much concern that the issue will affect McCaffrey in the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl.

No 49ers inactive due to injury for NFC championship game

The #49ers are at full strength for the NFC championship game. Here are their inactives:

The 49ers are about as healthy as possible heading into the NFC championship game. Linebacker Oren Burks, who was listed as questionable on the injury report with a shoulder issue, was not among the team’s inactives and will play Sunday against the Lions.

Here’s who won’t be playing for San Francisco:

QB Brandon Allen
WR Willie Snead IV
LB Jalen Graham
OT Matt Pryor
WR Ronnie Bell
CB Sam Womack
LB Curtis Robinson

Robinson and Snead were both brought up off the practice squad as part of the team’s Saturday roster moves. They’ll receive a game check despite not being active for the game.

Health is a huge factor in the playoffs, and San Francisco doesn’t have any major absences in the biggest game of the year.
