Saints’ latest roster move may mean good news for injured Pro Bowler

The New Orleans Saints announced they had waived Connor McGovern, which could mean good news is on the way for Erik McCoy:

The New Orleans Saints announced Monday they had waived Connor McGovern, which could mean good news is on the way for Erik McCoy. McGovern has been the go-to option replacing McCoy at center, and on Sunday he snapped the ball for all 53 of the Saints’ offensive plays. If he clears waivers he should be a safe bet to return on the Saints practice squad.

And McGovern, if you’ll remember, was the offensive lineman the Saints waived wide receiver A.T. Perry to make room for. He wound up logging 369 snaps across six games, five of them starts, and entirely at center.

But back to McCoy. The former Pro Bowler has been out of action with a groin injury that required surgery earlier this season, and the Saints didn’t win a game without him until Sunday’s upset of the Atlanta Falcons. When Klint Kubiak installed his offense McCoy was tasked with adjusting protection before the snap, and the team struggled badly without him.

So this move likely means he’ll be back in the middle this Sunday against the  Cleveland Browns. That gives McCoy an opportunity to get his feet back under him and take advantage of the bye week for extra rest afterwards. He hasn’t been officially activated yet after returning to practice last week, but that does seem to be the way the wind is blowing.

Chris Olave officially placed on Saints injured reserve

Chris Olave has officially placed on the New Orleans Saints injured reserve, sidelining him for at least the next four games:

The New Orleans Saints are placing Chris Olave on injured reserve. This doesn’t necessarily end his season, but it does guarantee he will be out for at least the next four games.

The Saints have a bye week coming soon, so it’s important to note Olave has to miss four games, not four weeks. He won’t be eligible to return until Week 15 against the Washington Commanders if he returns at all.

Darren Rizzi has spoken about prioritizing Olave the person over the player. That’s an important and correct stance when it comes to concussions. Placing him on injured reserve keeps him from trying to rush back to the field. There should be legitimate conversations on whether it is worth it to come back for Olave long term.

Olave has suffered four concussions in his professional career, including two this year very close to each other. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Olave miss the remainder of the season.

Jaguars activate WR Devin Duvernay from injured reserve

Jaguars activate WR Devin Duvernay from injured reserve

The Jaguars activated wide receiver Devin Duvernay from their injured reserve on Saturday, ending his four-week stint on the list and making him available to play in Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville signed Duvernay via free agency this offseason and deployed him as the team’s primary kickoff and punt returner to begin the campaign.

However, Duvernay hurt his hamstring in Jacksonville’s Week 5 win over the Indianapolis Colts and was placed on the injured reserve on Oct. 9. His 21-day injured reserve practice window was opened Wednesday.

Duvernay returned five kickoffs for 20 yards per return, seven punts for 11.6 yards per return, caught one pass for a one-yard loss and rushed three times for 10 yards in his first five games with the Jaguars this year.

Over the first four seasons of his NFL career, with Baltimore, Duvernay posted 94 receptions for 898 yards and five touchdowns, 27 rushing attempts for 219 yards and one score, and averaged 24.5 yards per kickoff return with two touchdowns and 12.8 yards per punt return.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson suggested Friday that Duvernay could see an uptick in usage offensively given the injuries Jacksonville has suffered at wide receiver, including losing starting slot receiver Christian Kirk for the season after he broke his collarbone in Week 8.

“I think he’ll have a bigger role now that the guys are banged up, right? More than just returner out there,” Pederson said. “So again, Devin is a pro. He prepares, he gets himself ready to go and I would anticipate him playing a little bit more on offense.”

Saints wide receiver to go on injured reserve, may be done for the year

Multiple reports say Saints wide receiver Chris Olave is expected to go on injured reserve. He may be done for the year after his second concussion in 2024:

This was the development we expected, but that doesn’t make it any less tough to reckon with. The New Orleans Saints are expected to place wide receiver Chris Olave on injured reserve Saturday, per multiple reports — NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill first reported the news, which was confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

It’s a tough blow to a Saints receiving corps that’s already undermanned with the loss of Rashid Shaheed to season-ending knee surgery. There’s a possibility Olave’s year could be finished, too. He’s suffered two concussions this season and four in his NFL career. That many brain injuries in so short a time may carry serious long-term health ramifications for him.

So keep an eye out. Veteran backup Cedrick Wilson Jr. has been dealing with an injury, too, so the only healthy wideouts on the Saints’ 53-man roster this weekend are Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Mason Tipton, and Jermaine Jackson. Expect at least one of Equanimeous St. Brown, Dante Pettis, and Kevin Austin Jr. to be promoted from the practice squad soon.

Injured reserve is ‘on the table’ for Saints star wide receiver

Injured reserve is ‘on the table’ for New Orleans Saints star Chris Olave. Four concussions in just three years is a lot for the wide receiver to consider:

Chris Olave won’t be active when the New Orleans Saints kick off with the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, and there’s at least a possibility the star wide receiver won’t play another down this season. Olave suffered the fourth concussion of his brief NFL career last week, which can have long-lasting impacts on his health and wellbeing.

All that’s certain is that Olave has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game. Beyond that, who can say?

“Everything’s on the table,” interim head coach Darren Rizzi said Friday, when injured reserve came up as a possibility for Olave. That determination hasn’t been made yet and Olave is still meeting with concussion specialists and team doctors before making a decision.

A stint on injured reserve would last at least the next four weeks, sidelining Olave for three home games with the Falcons, Cleveland Browns, and Los Angeles Rams as well as the bye in Week 12. But if he’s still feeling symptoms and struggling with this brain injury, the better move could be to end his season altogether. We’ve reached a point where his career in pro football should be considered seriously. Stay tuned for further updates.

Saints’ most important offensive starter returns after early-season injury

The Saints haven’t won a game since Erik McCoy got hurt. Their most important offensive starter returned to practice after an early-season injury:

This could be big. The New Orleans Saints haven’t won a game since Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy got hurt back in Week 3, which put him on injured reserve after undergoing groin muscle surgery. But their most important offensive starter returned to practice on Thursday, at least on a limited basis.

It’s still probably too soon for McCoy to get back into a game; his initial timeline had him returning to the lineup after the bye week. There’s a chance he could return sooner, and opening his 21-day practice window may indicate he’ll be back sooner rather than later.

Klint Kubiak installed his offense with the idea that McCoy would be responsible for reading the defense pre-snap and adjusting protection at the line of scrimmage, taking a load off Derek Carr’s shoulders so the quarterback could focus on communicating with his receivers and getting the ball out quickly. That plan had to be scrapped when the center went down with an injury, but his return (whenever it comes) could be just what they need to get the offense back on track.

Report: Dennis Allen ‘had a lot to do with’ RB’s second stint on injured reserve

Kendre Miller went back on injured reserve soon after leaving it, with a minor hamstring injury. This report says that was largely Dennis Allen’s decision:

No one is more frustrated than Kendre Miller with his injury situation — after all, it’s his own body getting damaged and holding back his career. But former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen’s frustrations boiled over. Not long after Miller returned from injured reserve with a hamstring injury, he exited another game after injuring the hamstring in his other leg.

It was described as a minor injury, expected to sideline him for a week or two. But this report from LouisianaSports.Net’s Ross Jackson says Allen “had a lot to do with” the decision to sideline Miller on injured reserve again. Now the running back has to miss four games before he’ll be eligible to return. The soonest he can play again is Week 14’s matchup with the New York Giants.

Miller had been in the doghouse with Allen for months. He suffered that first hamstring injury just minutes into their first training camp practice and didn’t return until almost midseason. Allen had questioned Miller’s comprehension of the playbook with so few practice reps and even suggested the former third-round draft pick could fail to make the team if he couldn’t stay healthy.

So it was a tense situation to say the least. But Allen is gone now, having been fired, and Miller is anticipating a heavy workload once he’s allowed back on the field. His career to this point hasn’t met expectations, but the young pro is determined to salvage it the next time he has the ball in his hands.

Saints open practice window for a starter to return from injured reserve

The New Orleans Saints opened the 21-day practice window for starting safety Will Harris to return from injured reserve:

The New Orleans Saints announced Wednesday that they had opened the 21-day practice window for starting safety Will Harris to return from injured reserve, which could be a big boost for the secondary.

Harris went down with a hamstring injury during Week 5’s prime-time loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. To that point in the season the was the only defender to stay on the field for 100% of snaps — more than mainstays like Tyrann Mathieu and Demario Davis.

He  totaled 16 tackles (12 solo, 1 tackle for loss) and an interception with 3 passes defensed, so he was productive. The Saints have struggled to replace Harris between a rotation including Jordan Howden, J.T. Gray, and Johnathan Abram coming up from the practice squad.

Remember, teams can only activate eight players from injured reserve each season. Backup guard/center Shane Lemieux is also practicing during his own window to return, and the team hopes to get back starting center Erik McCoy later this year. But running back Kendre Miller has already come off injured reserve once before going back on it, so the Saints are rapidly running short on activations. Let’s hope the injury bug stops biting soon.
