DE Jerry Hughes says Texans rookies are vocal, asking questions

Houston Texans defensive end Jerry Hughes says that the rookies are very vocal and asking questions during meetings.

Being the new person at a job can be as awkward as a new character being written into season five of a TV series, and it is no different for NFL rookies.

Typically youngsters avoid asking questions during meetings, hoping to figure out the problems they couldn’t grasp in a more familiar environment.

According to defensive end Jerry Hughes, the Houston Texans have rookies on defense who aren’t afraid to be vocal in the classroom.

Defensive ends Will Anderson, Dylan Horton, and linebacker Henry To’oTo’o are leading the charge and ask questions on concepts they don’t quite understand or need further clarification.

“Henry, Will, Dylan, those guys are vocal, they’re asking questions,” Hughes told reporters Tuesday after mandatory minicamp. “We’re talking about technique throughout practice. It’s not where we’re just wasting time. The minute we walk in this building, it’s football on.”

At 34 years old, Hughes keeps being the older veteran wherever he goes. As the former TCU product enters his second season with Houston, Hughes appreciates the spark from the rookies.

“I think that’s what I love to see,” said Hughes. “You love that you got a young group of guys that are passionate about this game, who want to take their game to the next level. They’re constantly on it day in, day out.”

Hughes accepts that the rookies are atypical when it comes to their desire to learn.

Said Hughes: “Normally when you get around a bunch of people and you’re kind of new into that environment, you kind of tend to be more standoffish, kind of want to shrink down in the chair versus being a little bit more boastful, willing to ask questions, willing to get it repeated so you can make sure you understand it. Because you’d be surprised, there’s a lot more other people who need that understanding as well. When you have young guys doing that, that’s just a great mentality that you love to have.”

Coaches can instill so much, and veterans can carry the torch so long. Ultimately a team can only cross the chasm into prosperity with younger players buying in.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans appreciates LB Henry To’oTo’o’s on-field communication

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans appreciates the amount of on-field communication that was part of LB Henry To’oTo’o’s college career.

The Houston Texans added to their linebacking corps on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL draft with Alabama’s Henry To’oTo’o.

Houston already had an Alabama linebacker on the team in former 2022 third-rounder Christian Harris. However, the Texans grabbed To’oTo’o in the fifth round to bolster their group.

According to coach DeMeco Ryans — incidentally a former Alabama linebacker himself — the Texans admired To’oTo’o for his consistency on the field as well as his ability to relay defensive calls.

“Henry has been a very consistent player,” Ryans told reporters May 12 at Texans rookie minicamp. “Watching him in Alabama over the years, he’s been very consistent and a part of a really good defense there.”

In two seasons with the Crimson Tide, the 22-year-old collected 205 combined tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble through 28 career games.

“He’s a very good communicator, running the show there,” said Ryans. “They have a lot of calls, checks with that defense. So just being familiar with it, I have high respect for guys who have to communicate in college because it’s an easier transition when they come to our level.”

The Texans also have linebackers Christian Kirksey, Denzel Perryman, Garret Wallow, Jermaine Carter, Blake Cashman, Jake Hansen, and Cory Littleton on the roster.

“I was ‘X-Man’ because my name’s Xavier,” sixth-round receiver Xavier Hutchinson explained.

“Growing up, I was ‘Golden Toe Joe,'” punter Joe Doyle said. “My name is Joe and I’m a kicker.”

Fifth-round linebacker Henry To’oTo’o revealed that his nickname is “Hank the Tank,” and the explanation he gave was because, simply, he was a tank.

Texans sign fifth-round linebacker Henry To’oTo’o to rookie contract

The Houston Texans signed former Alabama linebacker Henry To’oTo’o to a four-year rookie contract.

The Houston Texans continue to work through signing their 2023 draft class.

Houston made official their signing of fifth-round linebacker Henry To’oTo’o on Friday just before rookie minicamp at Houston Methodist Training Center.

The Texans were impressed with To’oTo’o’s leadership throughout his college career.

“I mean, wherever he’s played, he’s been productive,” general manager Nick Caserio said April 29 after the draft. “Whether it was at Tennessee, whether it was at Alabama, captain, leader, ran a defense, signal caller, highly productive, instinctive. So there’s a lot of good qualities, should have a role in the kicking game.”

To’oTo’o joins another Alabama linebacker on the team in Christian Harris.
