Bengals will give Charlie Jones a shot as primary kick returner

After some electric punt returns, Charlie Jones will get a chance at kickoffs.

Kickoffs and speical teams are a huge topic around the NFL right now after the recent rules changes.

That includes the Cincinnati Bengals, with the subject of who might return kicks next year a question.

As it turns out, after an electric, short stint as a punt returner next year, sophomore Charlie Jones will get a look, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

Yes, Jones is going to get a shot at kickoffs. He didn’t return one as a rookie after 45 kick returns in college, headlined by his 2021 season at Iowa when he took one back and averaged 25.4 yards for a year he ran back 25 kicks. Jones has shown adroit lateral moves.

Jones took one punt back for a touchdown last season as a rookie, so it only makes sense that his workload would expand.

That said, the Bengals have already brought back running back Trayveon Williams and could add more competition for the role via the draft soon.

Looking ahead to next year, the addition of Mike Gesicki could eat up a chunk of the base offense’s snaps that used to go to Tyler Boyd, so Jones getting more work on special teams is the likely move.

Bengals make roster moves before TNF vs. Ravens

Charlie Jones is back as part of new Bengals roster moves.

The Cincinnati Bengals made a couple of notable roster moves before the “Thursday Night Football” showdown against the Baltimore Ravens kicked off.

As fans have been hoping, the team activated rookie wideout Charlie Jones to the 53-man roster. The move gives Cincinnati a spark not only in the base offense, but on special teams returns, considering Jones had already scored once in that capacity before a stint on injured reserve.

The Bengals also announced the elevation of wide receiver Shedrick Jackson from the practice squad to the active roster, a standard elevation that will revert him back to the practice squad on the Monday after the game.

Jones suffered a thumb injury that required surgery but was cleared and activated to return to practice last week. The Bengals won’t have wideouts Tee Higgins and Andrei Iosivas on Thursday night due to injuries.

Bengals downgrade rookie WR Charlie Jones to out vs. Texans

The re-debut for Charlie Jones will have to wait.

The Cincinnati Bengals won’t have rookie receiver Charlie Jones for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.

Saturday, after making two other roster moves at the wide receiver position, the Bengals didn’t activate Jones to the 53-man roster by the 4 p.m. ET deadline, ruling him out.

Cincinnati opened the 21-day window for Jones’ return from IR this week and can activate him at any point during that three-week period.

With Tee Higgins confirmed out and Ja’Marr Chase questionable, it was safe to wonder if Jones would get activated for the game against Houston. Instead, the team opted for precaution as he misses a sixth game due to a thumb injury that required surgery.

Bengals make roster moves before Week 10 vs. Texans

Some roster moves for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals have elevated wide receivers Stanley Morgan and Shedrick Jackson to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.

This comes on the heels of the revelation that Tee Higgins won’t be able to play against the Texans after injuring his hamstring in practice.

Unless the Bengals make another move before kickoff, it would also seem to hint the team won’t activate rookie Charlie Jones to the active roster after his practice window was opened this week as he looks to come back from IR.

These moves are classified as standard elevations, so both wideouts will revert to the practice squad on the Monday following the game.

Bengals clear rookie WR Charlie Jones for practice return

Charlie Jones is back at practice with the Bengals and off IR.

The Cincinnati Bengals have cleared rookie receiver Charlie Jones to return to practice.

Jones, a fourth-round pick, has been on injured reserve since the end of September due to a thumb injury that required surgery.

This move ahead of Week 10 against the Houston Texans opens a 21-day period in which Jones may practice without counting against the 53-man roster. The team can elevate him to the 53 at any point during that three-week stretch.

Last week, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed that Jones could return this week, so it will be interesting to see how quickly the team brings him along and if he’ll be able to get back on the 53 quickly.

The Bengals could use Jones’ help, provided he’s proven to be a dangerous special teams returner with one touchdown already. That, and the Ja’Marr Chase back injury situation.

Bengals could get rookie WR Charlie Jones back next week

Charlie Jones is getting closer to a return.

The Cincinnati Bengals expect to get rookie wide receiver Charlie Jones back soon.

But not for Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills.

Speaking with reporters before that “Sunday Night Football” showdown, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor revealed that while Jones won’t return this week, he could be back as soon as next week.

Jones had a thumb injury and surgery that landed him on injured reserve and he was first eligible to return this week.

The Bengals could certainly use his explosiveness on special teams returns after his big debut as a pro over the first few weeks featured a touchdown return. This is especially the case with Houston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Jacksonville on the schedule starting in Week 10.

Quietly, Jones’ status will be something to watch after Sunday’s game against the Bills.

Bengals injury report headlined by Trey Hendrickson, Charlie Jones update

The first Bills vs. Bengals injury report has arrived.

The first Cincinnati Bengals injury report of the week before the team takes on the Buffalo Bills in primetime features some major names.

There, the Bengals issued the following designations:

  • Trey Hendrickson, DNP
  • Josh Tupou, DNP
  • Tycen Anderson, DNP
  • Orlando Brown, LP
  • Joe Mixon, LP
  • Akeem Davis-Gaither LP

Coaches stressed that Hendrickson’s absence after the injury he suffered against the 49ers was just a management thing and not an indication that he wouldn’t be able to play next Sunday night. This is the same early rest day Orlando Brown had last week, too.

It would also appear that this is the first big step in the right direction for Akeem Davis-Gaither, though the team did just add another free-agent linebacker to the practice squad.

Though he’s eligible to return, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said that rookie wide receiver Charlie Jones won’t have his 21-day return window opened and that it might be something they can do next week.

Bengals’ Charlie Jones reveals surgery and injury return timetable

Charlie Jones provides a small update on his injury comeback.

Cincinnati Bengals rookie wide receiver Charlie Jones revealed on Wednesday that he underwent surgery for the thumb injury that sent him to injured reserve.

According to CLNS Media’s Mike Petraglia, Jones also stressed that he expects to be back and ready after the bye week as soon as he’s eligible, meaning Week 9.

That’s good news for a Bengals team that could use the offensive depth with Tee Higgins hurting, never mind his explosiveness on special teams returns that helped him score a touchdown already this season.

In the interim, rookie Andrei Iosivas and veteran Trenton Irwin will continue to play in the base offense if Higgins can’t go, with Irwin also working returns.

Bengals lose breakout rookie returner Charlie Jones to injured reserve

The season comes to a halt for a breakout Bengals rookie.

The Cincinnati Bengals have placed rookie wideout Charlie Jones on injured reserve, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

Jones surfaced on the injury report this week with a thumb issue just a few days removed from another strong showing during Monday night’s win over the Los Angeles Rams.

A fourth-round pick, Jones hasn’t played a major role in the base offense but had been stellar on special teams, taking a return back for a touchdown in Week 2 and looking like he had a chance to break several others.

This is a major setback for Jones and the special teams unit, where Trenton Irwin will likely take over the return duties.

For now, there’s no word on the severity of the injury for Jones, so he could be designated to return at a later date this season.

Charlie Jones joins Joe Burrow on Bengals injury report

The first Bengals injury report of the week is here.

Joe Burrow is the biggest name on the Cincinnati Bengals injury report this week — but he’s far from the only one.

Of note, rookie wideout and special teams returner Charlie Jones has surfaced on the first injury report of the week with a hand issue.

Jones joins starting tight end Irv Smith as non-Burrow notables:

  • Charlie Jones (DNP)
  • Irv Smith Jr. (DNP)
  • Joe Burrow (Full Participation)

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor told the media that Burrow would receive all of the starter’s reps during Wednesday’s walkthrough (due to them being on a short week). But Burrow remains day-to-day and like last week, isn’t a guarantee to do a ton of work during practice on Thursday and Friday.

In short, expect limited action from Burrow this week but that he will start in Tennessee, with the other names to-be-decided.
