Is Anthony Richardson a better passer than Cam Newton?

The former Florida QB compares his game to that of Heisman winner Cam Newton. Does he believe that he is a better passer than Newton?

Former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson turned heads at the NFL Combine last week in Indianapolis.

Some of his highlights include running the 40-yard dash in 4.43, reaching 40.5 in the vertical jump, and scoring a 99 on the athleticism test. After his week at the combine, most feel that he will be a top-10 pick. In the latest mock draft from College Sports Wire, Patrick Conn sees Richardson going No. 7 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Following the combine, Richardson spoke with CBS Sports HQ about the combine, and how well he would transition to the pro game. During his interview, Richardson says that he tries to model his game after former Heisman-winning quarterback and Auburn legend [autotag]Cam Newton[/autotag] as well as Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

“I started calling myself Cam Jackson in 11th grade,” Richardson said.

Rick Spielman, the former General Manager of the Minnesota Vikings, then asked Richardson if he felt that he was a better passer than the former Auburn signal caller, to which Richardson said, “I believe so.”

Comparing Newton‘s and Richardson‘s final college season stats, Newton had the edge in yards by passing for 2,584 yards as opposed to Richardson’s 2,549. Newton was also more accurate by completing 66% of his passes while Richardson completed 54%.

It will be interesting to see if Richardson will indeed become a better passer than Newton over his pro career.

Badgers tied for all-time lead in top RB award

Is Braelon Allen the next Doak Walker Award winner from the Badgers?

The Doak Walker Award, established in 1990, is awarded to the nation’s top collegiate running back every season. Named after Walker, a former RB at Southern Methodist (1945-1949), it’s the highest honor a ball carrier can earn for their position.

Wisconsin has produced some of the best running backs in the country in the last couple decades and has gained some steam as the “running back university”. In the end though, the Badgers have never been able to get over the hump and make a national championship, regardless of their backfield talent. Looking to the future, new head coach Luke Fickell and offensive coordinator Phil Longo have reassured fans that the running mentality will not be erased moving forward, but only time will tell.

Overall, the Badgers have had five winners of the Doak Walker Award, tying them with the Texas Longhorns for most ever. Here’s a look into the impressive athletes to don the Badger red and white:

2023 Heisman Watch: early rankings of the top 10 candidates for next season

It’s the offseason. You want to talk about college football. Why not dive into the Heisman? Where is the next Max Duggan-type candidate who can challenge Caleb Williams?

It’s officially time for Heisman Watch 2023, evaluating who will win the Heisman Trophy in the 2023 college football season.

USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams won the 2022 Heisman Trophy and he will be the favorite to win it next season. However, there are plenty of outstanding candidates who will challenge him for the award and there are always breakout players each season.

It will be fascinating to see which candidates rise and fall, and more particularly, where the unexpected Heisman contenders come from. No one, for example, predicted before the 2022 college football season that Max Duggan was a leading Heisman Trophy contender. Yet, he finished second in the voting behind Caleb Williams.

No one predicted before the 2022 season that Michael Penix or Bo Nix would have such great seasons, or that Hendon Hooker would beat Bryce Young on the field in the Tennessee-Alabama game.

Let’s take an early look at the 2023 Heisman Trophy field and some of the notable names to watch for:

Joe Burrow thirst is raging on TikTok and y’all should be ashamed

If your TikTok feed is nothing but Joe Burrow infatuation, you’re not alone.

To say Joe Burrow is having a moment isn’t just an understatement — it’s misleading.

Burrow’s “moment” has lasted years at this point, both for his talent and ability to bounce back, and his star isn’t fading anytime soon. The Bengals quarterback is leading Cincinnati back to the AFC Championship game for the second year in a row with hopes of another shot at a Super Bowl appearance (not to mention another shot at being the first Heisman-winning quarterback to claim a national championship AND a Super Bowl win).

But that’s not why we’re here. We’re here because my TikTok feed, which is usually a healthy mix of kitchen hacks, makeup tutorials and dated millennial humor, is now an endless, shameless stream of Joe Burrow smut.

And it’s time to get a grip.

How is this poor man supposed to focus on football knowing someone’s out there making yet another slo-mo “Big Boy” edit of him in that floral suit? How can he be expected to get through warmups when all it takes is a verse from “WAP” and a two-second shot of a deep lunge to whip Beyonce’s internet into a lustful frenzy?

It doesn’t matter that he was born with a jawline that could cut glass or that his tailor deserves a medal for what he can do with a fitted blazer. What matters is some of us are trying to live our lives in peace and it’s not easy when the algorithm has been HIJACKED BY SIN.

Don’t believe me? See for yourself. You might want to watch a few of these more than once. For journalism reasons.

ESPN names Jayden Daniels a 2023 Heisman contender

There are high expectations for Daniels, should he return to school.

LSU quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] has yet to announce his 2023 plans. The transfer from Arizona State could come back to Baton Rouge for another year or head off to the NFL.

If Daniels does come back, there will be high expectations. ESPN released its list of early Heisman contenders, and Daniels made the cut.

“In his first year at a new school, battling a few injuries and learning a completely new system, all the Arizona State transfer did was throw for 2,774 yards and 16 touchdowns, rush for 818 and 11 more scores and lead LSU to an upset of Alabama and an SEC West title,” ESPN’s Bill Connelly wrote.

Daniels has his critics, but the reasoning there holds up.

Playing quarterback at any big program provides a natural spotlight and the tough SEC schedule only increases those spotlight moments. Daniels’ dual-threat ability allows him to be a highlight-maker as well.

LSU should return its most talented pass catchers [autotag]Kayshon Boutte[/autotag] and [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag]. Tight end [autotag]Mason Taylor[/autotag] looked to be turning into one of Daniels’ favorite targets and he will take a step forward along with other talents like [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag]

ESPN lists the top Heisman Trophy contenders for 2023

ESPN deems Arch Manning a 2023 Heisman candidate.

USC quarterback Caleb Williams took home the Heisman Trophy after a fantastic 2022 season for the Trojans. While the Heisman was just awarded to Williams, ESPN is already looking ahead to the 2023 contenders.

Caleb Williams returns leading the pack of Heisman front runners. He is looking to join Ohio State legend Archie Griffin as a two-time Heisman winner.

North Carolina’s Drake Maye is a popular pick following his breakout freshman campaign. Maye threw for 35 touchdowns and took home ACC Player of the Year honors for the Tar Heels.

An interesting selection mentioned by ESPN is 2023 Texas commit Arch Manning. The five-star ranks as the No. 1 player in the country coming out of high school but has Quinn Ewers and Maailk Murphy to pass on Texas’ depth chart. No true freshman has ever won the Heisman Trophy.

Here is a complete look at ESPN’s way-too-early Heisman contenders. It is divided into four categories: top contenders, up-and-comers, momentum players and redemption stories.

Heisman Trophy Trivia: test yourself on the history of this award and USC’s place within it

#USC questions. #Heisman questions. This award has existed for 87 years. See how much you know about the Trojans and college football.

Let’s have some fun. The bowl games are starting in several days (Friday, Dec. 16), and Christmas is coming up. The Cotton Bowl is still three weeks away. We’ll dive deeper into the game against Tulane after Christmas Day. USC-Auburn basketball is on Dec. 18, still a full week away. We’ll have more on that game as the weekend approaches.

Right now, we’re tracking transfers at USC and in the Pac-12. The early signing period for recruiting is coming up, and that’s a big story. In terms of actual football games being played, there isn’t a ton of action at the moment, so you need something to satisfy your football fix. How about the Heisman Trophy, which was won by USC’s Caleb Williams on Saturday night in New York?

Test yourself at Heisman Trophy trivia. We’ll provide the answers to these questions at the bottom of the article:

Photos: Stetson Bennett, others at the Heisman Trophy ceremony

Who was best dressed at the Heisman Trophy presentation?

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett shocked a lot of folks when he earned an invitation to New York for the presentation of the Heisman Trophy. Nobody was predicting Bennett to be in the Heisman conversation ahead of the year.

The senior quarterback finished fourth in the 2022 Heisman Trophy voting. Bennett, a former walk-on, helped Georgia win a national championship last season and is a big reason why Georgia won the 2022 SEC championship and finished another regular season undefeated.

Bennett will face Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, who finished third in the voting, in a few weeks in the College Football Playoff. USC quarterback Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy, but he was quick to point out that he was the only one of the four finalists to not be in the CFP.

The story of USC’s 8 Heisman winners is the story of the Heisman Trophy’s 87-year history

The progression of #USC Heisman winners mirrors the larger story of the #Heisman Trophy since its first year in 1935. We explain.

USC is part of a much larger theater of activity and history in college football. In some ways, the Trojans are unique in college football history. This 2022 Heisman Trophy ceremony magnified that fact, and we will explain why as we continue this particular examination of Heisman history.

Yet, for all the ways in which USC is unique — and stands above the crowd — in Heisman history, the Trojans are also an embodiment of the changes which have occurred in college football and the Heisman itself over the years.

There’s plenty to unpack about the evolution of the Heisman in relation to the progression of college football over a larger period of time … and how USC fits within that bigger story:

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, from Davey O’Brien to Caleb Williams

This year’s Heisman Trophy winner was a quarterback. Here are all of the QBs to win the award in college football history.

Believe it or not, a majority of the 88 Heisman Trophies have not been handed out to quarterbacks. When looking at the progression of college football over time, this did not become a quarterback-centric sport until the late 1980s.

Andre Ware’s Heisman Trophy for Houston in 1989, under a modernized passing offense, really seemed to mark the changing of the guard in college football. That’s when the sport was beginning to turn from a running back’s game into a quarterback’s domain. Steve Spurrier changed the SEC from a run-first conference to a pass-first conference beginning in 1990. Innovators such as Hal Mumme and Mike Leach began to revolutionize the passing game at Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech. Leach taught a man named Lincoln Riley about the passing game.

Through the mid-1980s, however, non-quarterbacks dominated the Heisman, including at USC, which produced four Heisman running backs in the 17 seasons spanning 1965 to 1981. With Caleb Williams winning the Heisman in 2022, three of USC’s last four Heisman winners — all in the 21st century — have been quarterbacks. USC has five running backs and three QBs among its eight winners.

The sport has changed.

Quarterbacks make up “only” 38 of the 88 Heisman winners, but they will soon have half, and are likely to keep winning most of these awards in the coming decades. Let’s look at all 38 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, with Caleb Williams being the latest member of the club:
