Michigan State football gets into the market for 5-star 2022 Texas LB

Michigan State has entered the race for a 5-star LB in the 2022 class

It is very unusual to see offers go out this late in the cycle to top-tier talent. Most players in the 4 and 5-star range have already narrowed their lists down and are focusing on a select few schools.

Michigan State linebackers coach Ross Els has gone against the grain here, sending out an offer to 5-star LB Harold Perkins.

One has to think that there is more going on behind the scenes, and this is definitely a development worth watching.

Perkins is a native of Cypress, Texas, and currently ranks as the No. 5 overall player in the nation.

WATCH: Texas target, five-star LB Harold Perkins scores touchdown on 51-yard run

Recruiting websites may have him listed as a linebacker, but Harold Perkins is one of the best athletes in the 2022 class.

Recruiting websites may have him listed as a linebacker, but five-star Harold Perkins is one of the best athletes in the 2022 class.

For Cy Park High School, Perkins is playing on the offensive side of the ball as well. His athleticism was being taken advantage of as a running back. Lining up in a triple-option formation, the quarterback tossed it back to Perkins and the rest was history.

51-yards to the house, with ease.

In all honesty, Perkins should have been taken down in the backfield for a loss but a nice stiff arm to the defender’s face eliminated the possibility. After reversing field, five other Cy Lakes players had the chance to tackle the five-star but had no such luck. His speed a strength was just too much.

This kind of athleticism is why Texas is trying to recruit Perkins for more than just a linebacker role. Terry Joseph is one of the primary recruiters, showing a defensive back influence. The Longhorns believe Perkins can play almost a linebacker/safety hybrid in Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense.

Tom Herman’s staff fell behind but Joseph and Jeff Banks have gotten right back into the thick of Perkins’ recruitment. He was in Austin last weekend for the Texas Tech game. To win out, getting a few more trips to the 40 Acres will be necessary.

On the 247Sports composite, Perkins is the No. 16 overall player and the No. 1 linebacker in the country. Within the state of Texas, the Cypress native ranks as the No. 4 prospect.

On3 names five must-get recruits for Texas’ 2022 class

Steve Sarkisian has an important few months of recruiting ahead of them. Here are Texas’ five must-get recruits remaining in the 2022 class.

Texas’ recruiting momentum has been soaring high, especially alongside the defensive line. A win against Arkansas would have helped even more but instead, a gut-punch back to reality faces Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

Although the Longhorns have the No. 3 class in the country, there is still plenty of work to do. Some of the top targets on the board are still available and will require dog fights to win out for.

Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas and On3 has named five must-get recruits for Texas. Unless numbers are mixed around by the coaching staff, there are only five spots left in the 2022 class. It would be one heck of a way to close out the cycle.

To put in perspective how big of gets these guys would be, landing all five to close shop would have been good enough for the No. 3 class in the country last year. Only Alabama and Ohio State would have signed more five-star prospects.

Five-star linebacker Harold Perkins down to seven schools

The top linebacker of the 2022 class, Harold Perkins lists the LSU Tigers among the final seven schools on his list.

The LSU Tigers received some good news on Thursday night as the No. 1 linebacker in the country, Harold Perkins of Cypress released his top seven. The Texas product is No. 14 overall according to 247Sports composite rankings and No. 4 in the state.

The two-way player is viewed as a linebacker at the next level. Currently plays both linebacker and running back. The Tigers currently have one linebacker committed to the 2022 cycle with DeMario Tolan of Orlando pledged to join the team.

Currently viewed as a three-team race between and LSU and two teams from his home state, Texas and Texas A&M. The Aggies currently seem like the lead dog in this race. Alabama, Florida, Oregon, and USC are the remaining teams to make Perkins’ top seven schools.

Texas brought in several former players for big recruiting weekend

Texas pulled out all the stops for the biggest recruiting weekend in program history.

This weekend has been full of pageantry and big names on the Forty Acres.

First-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff have made sure to pull out all the stops in order to host a group of what could be program-changing recruits.

The Texas football name is hot on the recruiting trail again, and this weekend the program looked to impress some of the biggest names in high school football.

Five-star quarterback Arch Manning headlined the group as he and his family toured the campus, along with some other five-star players such as 2022 linebacker Harold Perkins, 2023 wide receiver Jalen Hale, and 2023 running back Rueben Owens. One of the top 2023 wide receivers, Johntay Cook II, was seen catching passes from Manning on Saturday.

Here is a video of Manning’s 70+ yard pass to a streaking Cook.

Along with some gummy bears for Perkins, Texas made sure that some of the most elite alumni that walked through the Forty Acres were on sight in order to help showcase what being a Longhorn is about.

Some of those on sight included “Minister of Culture” and famous actor Matthew McConaughey, former players Vince Young, Jamaal Charles, Michael Huff and Earl Campbell. Take a look below to see the elite group.

This type of effort will likely impress recruits and possibly make them reconsider if they are already committed elsewhere, or it can put Texas in position to be the favorite of their recruitment.

For Texas to get a few commitments out of this weekend, it would be astronomical for the program and allow for them to build off this preseason success, with some in season success as well. Their 2022 recruiting class now sits at No. 8 in the nation according to 247Sports rankings, while the 2023 class is No. 2 in the nation with Owens as the lone commit.

The Longhorns are hoping this weekend changes that, and gives both classes a boost to the top.

Five-star LB Harold Perkins shows off hotel room for Texas visit, elated over gummy bears

Harold Perkins put a video up on his IG story, showing the entrance to his Austin hotel room. You can watch his hilarious reaction here.

Taking official visits has to be the best experience as a top-level recruit. Traveling to a college you most likely have never seen, the red carpet is rolled out. Especially when the school covets you as one of their top priorities.

At the beginning of the weekend, a surprise prospect decided to take an official visit to Texas. Five-star linebacker Harold Perkins, who has been seen as a Texas A&M lean, made his way to Austin. A big visitor for Steve Sarkisian and Pete Kwiatkowski to say the least.

First impressions are everything, especially for a new coaching staff. Texas football and Perkins could not have gotten off to a better start before even coming face to face.

The Cypress native put a video up on his Instagram story, showing the entrance to his Austin hotel room. A ton of gear and personalized memorabilia is laid out, but Perkins notices a Longhorn-themed cake first.

Soon thereafter, Perkins notices a big bag of Haribo gummy bears sitting next to his official pass and a gift bag. To say he was elated would be an understatement.

You can watch the hilarious moment below:

Even looking back on it, Perkins thought the moment was hilarious himself, reacting to the video on Twitter.

Moving back to the football field, Perkins is one of the best defensive players in the 2022 class. On the 247Sports composite, he ranks as the No. 14 overall player and No. 1 linebacker in the country.

Within the state of Texas, he is the No. 4 player. Only Quinn Ewers, Denver Harris, and Devon Campbell rank higher.

Perkins’ official visit is just getting underway. A full weekend of interacting with Sarkisian and Kwiatkowski is hopefully going to leave a good impression of the five-star. Whether or not Texas can become a serious contender in the recruitment is yet to be seen.
