Jim Harbaugh shares expectations when pads come on at Chargers training camp

Remaining injury-free is the No. 1 priority.

The Chargers are a week into training camp, and the intensity will increase as Monday marks the first day with pads on.

There is about to be more contact than the first week when the players only had their helmets on as protection, but Jim Harbaugh wants to keep everything clean so the team stays healthy ahead of the regular season.

“I think what we really got to convince our team is we just want to get better each day, better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than we were today,” Harbaugh said. “When the pads come on, that’s not some kind of magical thing that’s going to determine Day 1 of the pads.

“I want our guys to continue to play the same tempo, same rules of engagement that we had so we could get better at football and we could keep this team healthy,” Harbaugh added. “I get excited about pads because it protects guys, it protects them better.

With the pads on, this will be the most accurate form of player evaluation as it shows their conditioning levels, ability to play through contact, among other things. This especially applies to offensive and defensive linemen.

Even though the physicality is about to ramp up as players look to prove their worth to the coaching staff to secure a spot on the roster, safety is the top priority.

“I’m not looking for guys to have the pads on and now all of a sudden start using those as weapons against our own team, but we use those to protect ourselves,” Harbaugh continued.

Chargers embracing physical offensive identity: ‘We want to be bullies’

The Chargers want to be bullies on the field.

The Chargers want to be bullies on the field. With the second day of training camp wrapped up, the team is embracing a new identity for their offense.

The Harbaugh era has brought a myriad of changes to the organization and its been electrifying. The team’s new training facility, dubbed as The Bolt, being one of the neweest additions to the exciting offseason.

As the Chargers head into the regular season, they have a chance to make a name for themselves. Safety Derwin James made it clear the Bolts have left the past in the past and they won’t be the same five-win team.

Running back J.K. Dobbins echoed his teammate as he spoke on a new reputation for the Chargers offense—bullies.

“We want to be bullies, you know,” Dobbins said after practice. “We want to have a run game and a pass game. We want to be able to bully people and do whatever we want to do. And it starts here, camp, and we’re gonna get that.

“We’re gonna get to it, we’re gonna work for it every single day. And we got the guys to do it. And so that’s what we’re shooting for. I know I’m shooting for it, not only as a team, but as a player as well. I want to be a bully on the field too.”

Furthermore, offensive coordinator Greg Roman also shared the idea of keeping the past in the past and welcoming a new oneness.

“I think whatever happened in the past is that. It’s independent of what’s going to happen in the future. Every game’s going to be a little different,” Roman said. “Some days, some games, we’re going to try to ground and pound. Again, ‘medieval’ as we spoke about this spring. Some games, you know, we’re going to air it out, and some games it’s going to be a mix.

The Harbaugh mentality has always been a physical offense that can run which gives quarterback Justin Herbert some breathing room on the field.

Offensive tackle Rashawn Slater spoke on the new mentality for the offense: “I know a big part of what he wants is physicality,” Slater said.

“And we’re all excited about that, but it’s hard to do without pads. So haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re hungry and we’re gonna be ready.”

Roman and Harbaugh are eager for the offensive line to earn the respect as one of the best units in the league this season. Roman highlighted what he’s seen so far from the five up front.

“Just the way they go about their business,” Roman said. “Trade movement in the guard. His communication is just dogged determination to understand every little thing that goes on in that position. His communication with Joe [Alt] and Bradley [Bozeman is] huge. And then our left side, these guys are just working, working, working. Our goal is, our offensive line, their goal is to be the best unit, to be able to play together really, really well, and I think these guys are working really, really well in that direction.”

By the end of training camp, the Chargers congruence should be evident according to Roman.

“It’ll be kind of dependent on the identity we build in training camp,” Roman added. “As we exit training camp, we should have a good feel for who we are. And I think that’ll really dictate, you know, where we really put our focus in.”

NFL draft rumor: Chargers ‘will do what it takes’ to select Blake Corum

The Chargers could have their eyes set on the productive running back from Michigan.

There are a handful of Jim Harbaugh’s former Michigan players who could appeal to him when the Chargers are on the clock, but he could have his eyes set on one specific player.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, it is believed that Harbaugh is expected to target running back Blake Corum.

“No running backs are expected to go in the first round, and there’s a great variety of opinion on which one will be the first back selected this year,” Graziano said.

“… I’ve spoken to scouts from multiple teams who think Michigan’s Blake Corum might be the best of the bunch and believe Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers will do what it takes to make sure he’s reunited with his college coach.”

Corum was productive for the Wolverines this past season, rushing for 1,245 yards and a program-record 27 touchdowns en route to the school’s national title. He finished his collegiate career with 58 rushing scores.

Corum isn’t the youngest player, set to be 24 this upcoming season and already has plenty of mileage used. But he has the patience, vision, and quickness to be an effective back in the NFL.

Los Angeles signed Gus Edwards and recently, JK Dobbins. But as they look to run the ball at a high level under offensive coordinator Greg Roman, the Chargers might feel that Corum is the final piece to the puzzle.

Check it out: Jim Harbaugh gets tattoo in honor of Michigan’s National Championship

Jim Harbaugh stuck to his word.

Last fall, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh made a promise to get a tattoo if his former team, Michigan, went all the way.

“If we go undefeated, I’m going to get a 15-0 tattoo,” Harbaugh said via the Inside Michigan Football radio show.

The tattoo includes the school’s “M” logo with 15-0 beneath.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”5375″ ]

Tattoo artist Stephen Bateman shared a post on Instagram featuring Harbaugh and his new ink with the caption: “Go Blue! 15-0. Thanks, Jim Harbaugh, for having me out!!” Bateman wrote.

The Wolverines won the national championship in January, defeating the Washington Huskies.

The victory marked Michigan’s first undefeated season since the school won its previous title two and a half decades ago.

Harbaugh will have a lasting reminder of his perfect season at Michigan with his new ink.

The question remains if Harbaugh will now vow to get a lightning bolt as his next tattoo if the Chargers get a ring.

Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh on No. 5 overall selection: ‘It’s an exciting pick’

Jim Harbaugh spoke about the Chargers’ first-round pick in this year’s draft.

Jim Harbaugh spoke to the media at the NFL’s annual owners meetings. Asked about the Chargers’ 5th pick in April, he said:

There’s some real possibilities. Like we’re really super excited about that pick, so we’ll see how it plays out. Pick a great player at 5? There’s going to be a great player at 5. There’s talk of four quarterbacks going in the first four picks. Where if that happens, that pick really becomes like the number one pick. If four quarterbacks go in the first four picks, it’s not like the fifth pick anymore. It’s like the number one pick for teams in the draft that have a great quarterback.

The four-quarterback scenario within the draft’s first four selections has gained steam over the last month, with Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy vaulting into top-five trade-up discussions. Perhaps unintentionally, Harbaugh managed to pump his draft stock during his presser by calling his Michigan pro day “the best I’ve ever seen.”

Perhaps that scenario doesn’t end up playing out despite the intense speculation of the Cardinals trading out of the fourth pick. Harbaugh has a plan for other scenarios as well:

Maybe four quarterbacks don’t go in a row. I mean it’s unprecedented that’s ever happened. Maybe there’s still a quarterback there with the fifth pick. Again, that would be like the number pick. It wouldn’t be like the calculator for the fifth pick anymore. If it comes around to us and we’re on the clock at number five, we know we got a great player that’s going to be there for us. Have to determine who that’s going to be. It’s an exciting pick, well aware we have the fifth pick.

As Harbaugh said, the Chargers potentially maintain optionality in either getting the best non-quarterback available a five or perhaps being able to trade out of five with a quarterback-needy team. For a team entering a roster retool that already has Justin Herbert, it’s hard to ask for a better scenario.

The 2024 NFL draft rapidly approaches for Hortiz, Harbaugh, and LA. We are now less than a month from an exciting night in Detroit.

New Michigan head coach shares what Chargers fans can expect from Jim Harbaugh

Michigan’s new head coach Sherrone Moore expressed his support for Jim Harbaugh and shared what Bolts fans should expect from him.

During an appearance on NFL Network, Michigan’s new head coach Sherrone Moore expressed his support for Jim Harbaugh and shared what Chargers fans should expect from him.

“First of all, an impeccable, great human being, great man, high character, high values,” Moore said. “But you’re gonna have a tough, physical, fast, relentless football team that will play through the echo of the whistle and give you everything they got every game and nothing less.

“They will play with high standards, they will play with discipline and they do everything that you guys want. And I look forward to watching Coach Harbaugh and all the staff kick butt at the next level.”

Harbaugh has made it clear that the Chargers will play physical football next season through hard work and resilience.

The new head coach of the Chargers means business and those are no empty words from Sherrone on the former Michigan head coach. Harbaugh is famous for a reason—he’s successful.

If his resume isn’t enough, it’s evident that his personnel support everything he does.

Seahawks hire former Ravens LB Josh Bynes to coaching position

Seahawks hire former Ravens LB Josh Bynes to coaching position

The Seattle Seahawks continue to fill out their coaching staff, and the Baltimore Ravens connection from head coach Mike Macdonald continues to be quite strong. On Monday it was announced the Seahawks have hired former Ravens linebacker Josh Bynes to be their assistant linebackers coach.

Once again, Macdonald has secured someone from the Harbaugh coaching tree. Bynes interviewed with Baltimore and the Los Angeles Chargers before accepting the Seahawks job, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC in Houston.

The youth movement in Seattle continues. Bynes, age 34, was just in the NFL as recently as the 2022 season. He officially retired as a Raven in December, signing a one-day contract.

Originally an undrafted free agent, Bynes spent his first three seasons in the Charm City of Baltimore. A productive role player, Bynes was a member of the Ravens’ Super Bowl XLVII-winning team under coach John Harbaugh. After Baltimore, Bynes spent three years in Detroit and two in Arizona. He then played three of his final four seasons in the league with the Ravens (with a one-year stop in Cincinnati).

Now Bynes comes to Seattle to help fix one of the worst run defenses in the league. Linebacker depth is a need for the Seahawks, and Bynes is there to help give his recent insight on the position to the team.

Report: Chargers to hire Marcus Brady as pass game coordinator

Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff is taking shape.

Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff is taking shape.

The Chargers are hiring Marcus Brady as their pass game coordinator, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler added that Brady interviewed for the offensive coordinator job that presumably goes to Greg Roman, who is also expected to join the staff.

Brady was recently the Eagles’ senior offensive assistant.

Before joining Philadelphia, Brady was with the Colts for five seasons, starting as their assistant quarterbacks coach in 2018.

That year, he helped Andrew Luck finish with one of the best seasons of his career, in which he threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns en route to winning the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Brady was promoted to quarterbacks coach the following season. In 2020, Philip Rivers finished the season in the top ten of completion percentage (68%) and passing yards (4,169).

He became the Colts’ offensive coordinator in 2021. That year, Indianapolis finished second in the NFL in rushing yards per game (149.4) and yards per carry (5.1) and tied for the fifth-most rushing touchdowns (22).

Before joining the NFL ranks, Brady was an offensive coordinator in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for eight seasons.

Jim Harbaugh dodges questions on future, Chargers head coaching job

Jim Harbaugh’s primary focus is coaching his team in the Rose Bowl against Alabama on New Year’s Day.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh’s primary focus is coaching his team in the College Football Playoffs against Alabama on New Year’s Day.

But for most football fans, their focus surrounding Harbaugh is his future and whether he will stay to coach the Wolverines or make the jump back to the NFL.

At Michigan’s media availability at Disneyland on Wednesday, Harbaugh was asked about his interest in returning to coach at the professional level.

Such a one-track mind. That’s the way we’ve gone about things. It’s literally whatever day we’re in, looking to get the most out of it. Dominate the day. Then we’re going to sleep tonight, and wake up tomorrow and see if we can’t dominate that day. It’s a single-minded group. It’s very focused on just taking care of business today and see if we can’t do the same tomorrow.

Despite making it clear that his center of attention is on preparing his team for the Rose Bowl, the next question was specifically related to the Chargers, as they’re a possible landing spot for Harbaugh if he were to return to the pros.

His answer was no different than the first one.

Yeah, just a very one-track mind about this game. Right now, just have fun with the family and the team and the players. . . . We’re gonna enjoy ourselves. And then get back to business, see if we can’t dominate the day. Got some good meetings tonight. We’ll wake up tomorrow and practice, see if we can’t dominate that day. . . . One day at a time, one play at a time, and that’s how we’re approaching each day.

Soon, Harbaugh will have to make a decision, however.

It’s reported that Michigan has an offer on the table worth $125 million, which would make him the highest-paid coach in college football. But it would preclude him from pursuing an NFL job for the 2024 season.

Meanwhile, the Chargers are interested in Harbaugh for their head coach position. It is unclear how much they would be willing to pay for the coveted coach. But if they want to make a splash hiring, Harbaugh would be worth the investment.
