Chargers hire Jim Harbaugh as head coach

Jim Harbaugh is coming to the AFC West. For a time it looked like the Raiders could be that team. But when then they hired Antonio Pierce as head coach, susequently removing their name from the list of landing spots for the head coach of the reigning National Championship Michigan Wolverines.

On the same day Pierce was officially introduced as head coach, we find out Harbaugh won’t even have to change the colors in his wardrobe as the Chargers made their move official.

The team with the best social media team in the NFL first went with literal smoke signals.

For those unfamiliar, at the Vatican when they have named a new pope, they send up white smoke. In other words, the Chargers have their new coach.

The next tweet confirmed who that coach is with the Harbaugh signature catch phrase.

And finally they changed their profile pic to Harbaugh’s face and made the announcement.

So, welcome Jim Harbaugh back to the NFL and to the AFC West.

The division has several high profile coaches now with Harbaugh joining the likes of Chiefs Andy Reid and Broncos Sean Payton. Wild, wild West.

Chargers hiring Jim Harbaugh as next head coach

The Chargers land a big fish.

The Chargers revealed their new head coach Wednesday, hiring Jim Harbaugh to the vacant spot.

Harbaugh succeeds Brandon Staley, who was fired this past season.

Over the past three seasons, Harbaugh turned Michigan into a powerhouse in college football. In that period, the Wolverines were 40-3, with three Big Ten titles, three College Football Playoff appearances, and now a national title with their win over Washington.

Harbaugh’s coaching career began with the Raiders as a quarterbacks coach in 2002 and 2003 before taking a head coaching job at the University of San Diego in 2004, where he led the Toreros to a 29-6 record during his three seasons.

In 2006, Harbaugh became the head coach of Stanford, finishing his tenure with a 29-21 overall record, including a 12-1 campaign and an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech in 2010.

Harbaugh then took a leap to the NFL, where he spent four seasons as the head coach of the 49ers from 2011-14, guiding them to two NFC Championship appearances and a trip to Super Bowl XLVII. He finished with a 44-19-1 record in the regular season and 5-3 in the postseason.

Harbaugh played for five different organizations during his 15-year NFL career, including the Chargers (1999-2000).

Report: Jim Harbaugh to meet with Chargers for second interview

Jim Harbaugh remains the heavy betting favorite to be the next Chargers head coach.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jim Harbaugh is expected to meet with the Chargers for a second time this week.

He is also scheduled for a second sit-down with the Falcons this week. Los Angeles and Atlanta remain the only coaching cycle vacancies for which Harbaugh has formally interviewed for. Michigan looms in the background, as they could potentially still offer him an extension.

Schefter also offered the end of this week as a timeline for a potential Harbaugh decision during Saturday’s broadcast of the playoff game between the Ravens and Texans. The Michigan head coach was in attendance for his brother, John’s, win in Baltimore.

The Chargers’ first round of interviews contained 15 candidates, the most in any of the organization’s previous head coaching searches. Jeremy Fowler reported that LA hopes to whittle the field down this week to “4-6 candidates” for a second round of interviews.

LA is still a betting favorite for Harbaugh’s team in 2024 on DraftKings at -300 odds. It’s still too early to say anything definitive, but things are clearly moving in the right direction for the 60-year-old college coach to make a leap to Los Angeles by the end of this week.

Chargers complete head coach interview with Dan Quinn

Dan Quinn has previous head coaching experience.

The Chargers completed their head coach interview with Dan Quinn, the team announced on Friday.

Quinn finished up his third season as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. His defense finished in the top five in yards allowed per game, passing yards per game and points allowed per game.

Before joining Dallas, spent six seasons as the head coach of the Falcons, guiding them to two playoff appearances, including a Super Bowl appearance in 2016.

Quinn was the defensive coordinator of the Seahawks before his time with Atlanta. In his first season as DC, Seattle led the league in fewest points allowed, fewest yards allowed, and takeaways. That year, they won the Super Bowl over the Broncos.

Quinn has other coaching stops with the 49ers, Dolphins and Jets as a defensive line coach. He has also coached at the college level, most notably as the DC and defensive line coach for Florida for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Chargers complete head coach interview with David Shaw

With 96 wins in his 12 seasons, David Shaw is the winningest coach at Stanford.

The Chargers completed their head coach interview with David Shaw, the team announced on Thursday.

Shaw, 51, previously was Stanford’s head coach from 2011 to 2022, overtaking Jim Harbaugh when he left the school to become the head coach of the 49ers in 2011.

In 12 seasons at Stanford, Shaw had a 96-54 record. He had three Pac-12 conference titles and two Rose Bowl wins.

Shaw and Harbaugh have ties that go back to 2006. That year, Shaw was Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator at the University of San Diego. In 2007, Shaw followed Harbaugh to Stanford in the same role until 2010.

Shaw has NFL experience, working as a quality control coach with the Raiders and Eagles. He’s also been the quarterbacks coach with the Raiders and QBs and wide receivers coach with the Ravens.

Before his time in the NFL, Shaw was an outside linebackers coach and tight ends coach at Western Washington.

Chargers complete head coach interview with Brian Callahan

The Bengals have had one of the top offenses since Brian Callahan took over that role.

The Chargers completed their head coach interview with Brian Callahan, the team announced on Tuesday.

Callahan finished his fifth season as the Bengals’ offensive coordinator, where he has engineered one of the top offenses in that timespan.

Before joining Cincinnati, Callahan was the Lions quarterbacks coach during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Matthew Stafford threw for over 4,000 yards in both years. In 2018, he held the same role with the Raiders. Derek Carr also surpassed the 4,000-yard mark in passing.

Callahan joined the NFL ranks as an assistant in 2010 until 2015 with the Broncos.

Callahan’s coaching career began in 2006 at UCLA as a graduate assistant. He then worked with the wide receivers in 2007 before becoming the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, CA.

Report: Chargers’ interview with Jim Harbaugh ‘went well’

Jim Harbaugh is the heavy betting favorite to be the next head coach of the Chargers.

The Chargers interviewed Jim Harbaugh for their head coaching vacancy on Monday, and it is reported that the meeting went to plan.

“The Chargers meeting as far as I’ve heard went well,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said. “They formally interviewed yesterday. The Chargers have not really been shy about their interest in [Harbaugh], it is real, it’s legitimate. I believe Harbaugh has a mutual interest as well. The chance with that quarterback, Justin Herbert, to make something happen.”

The question that looms is whether or not Harbaugh will remain the coach at Michigan, but Fowler indicated that it’s unlikely that he will return and would like to be an NFL head coach again.

“The question now is who else does he talk to? Michigan is trying to keep him. They’re trying to put together a package of some sort that would be very lucrative to keep him around, which I do believe he will entertain,” Fowler said. “I talked to a source close to Harbaugh who said the chances of him returning to Michigan at this point are probably pretty small. Certainly not out of the realm but he is intrigued about going back to the NFL.”

If Harbaugh makes the leap from the college level, other teams will be interested in him, most notably the Raiders. So, the Chargers’ selling point will have to be the finances and football operations.

Currently, Harbaugh is a big betting favorite to be the Bolts’ next head coach at -200, per BetOnline.ag.
