Ex-Jets C Nick Mangold loves Sam Darnold’s leadership skills

Former Jet Nick Mangold praises Sam Darnold for his leadership skills.

Despite not snapping a single football to Sam Darnold, former Jets center Nick Mangold loves what the young gunslinger brings to the table.

Mangold was on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football on Wednesday and discussed the Jets’ upcoming 2020 season. In that segment, Mangold had some kind words to say of Darnold’s leadership skills.

“I love Darnold’s mentality, the way he goes about things, the way he talks, the way he commands a huddle,” Mangold said.

As a former center, Mangold can tell pretty quickly when a quarterback has an offense’s ear. Some NFL quarterbacks just don’t command a huddle that well and that’s an important aspect to being a good one in the NFL. If that’s not the case, then there’s a certain respect level that is lost between the quarterback and the rest of the offense.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for Darnold in his young career, but it appears that he has already earned that respect not only because of his talent level, but for the way he handles himself around his teammates.

Darnold had an up and down sophomore campaign in 2019. In 13 games, Darnold has a 61.7 percent completion percentage to go along with 3,024 yards, 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Clearly, Mangold thinks as long as Darnold continues along this path that he’ll be an above average quarterback in the NFL.

‘Good Morning Football’ co-host Kyle Brandt rips coronavirus ‘tough guys’

Brandt delivered a rant Thursday morning.

Good Morning Football co-host Kyle Brandt has had enough of what he called “a little bit of a social pandemic that is bothering me.”

He described people as “(coronavirus) tough guys” who tell you, “It’s just the flu, chill out, wash your hands, shut up and go to work” and went on to thank former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long for admitting he was wrong about coronavirus being just a “fad sickness.”

He concluded with this: “Maybe it’s time to stop collecting retweets by telling people to do nothing and it’s okay.”

Nate Burleson says the Lions should ‘draft the best player available’ at pick No. 3

Recently on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football, former Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson weighed in on the Lions options in the 2020 NFL Draft. Burleson’s answer was simple and straightforward: ”Draft the best player available, don’t overthink it”.

Thursday morning on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football, former Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson weighed in on the Lions’ options at the top of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Burleson’s co-host, Kyle Brandt, posed him the question, assuming that both Joe Burrow (LSU) and Chase Young (Ohio State) are the first two players selected, “If you were the Lions, would you rather draft the best player available or trade down”?

Burleson’s answer was simple and straightforward: ”Draft the best player available, don’t overthink it”.

“If you try to trade down, then you have to negotiate to get exactly what you want,” Burelson continued. “There are some absolute dogs in this draft. Derrick Brown will still be there, so you can grab him (there). Isaiah Simmons, I feel is a guy who is going to make an immediate impact.

“If you want to get after the quarterbacks in the NFC North, you can’t be 29th in sacks and still try to make some waves within that division. So to me, go ahead and get the best player available.”

When draft day comes, the Lions could follow Burelson’s advice, play it safe and draft the best player, or they could trade down, in an effort to solve multiple problems.

GMFB has differing opinions on Jameis Winston’s future with Bucs

See what the crew over at “Good Morning Football” had to say about Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston and his future with the team.

This morning on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, Jameis Winston was the topic of conversation on the shows Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda segment, posing the question:

“Would you be surprised if Jameis Winston remains Buccaneers starting QB?”

Former wide receiver Nate Burleson, said that he would not be surprised if Winston remains at the helm citing comments from coach Bruce Arians, “We can win with Jameis.” Burleson continued by saying that Arians “wants a quarterback that can sling it, and throw it down field.” As Burleson elaborated, he talked about calling the Buccaneers and Houston Texans game at the end of the season, and spoke to Arians asking him about the offense, and what he wants out of his quarterback. “If he doesn’t make the throw, if he hesitates, if he checks it down, even if there are two guys on one of our star receivers, I am going to yell at my quarterback,” Arians told Burleson.

Burleson continued on his understanding of what Arians wants, saying “Jameis has that, he’s not going to hold back, he’s going to let it fly. I heard he went out and got LASIK, got his thumb on his throwing hand fixed. All things that point to Jameis coming back and having a better season. He won’t be 30-for-30 like the ESPN documentaries.”

Co-host, Kyle Brandt meanwhile, had a polar opposite opinion on Winston’s future saying, “[Bruce] Arians doesn’t want someone to sling it. Winston doesn’t need Arians to tell him to sling it. Carson Palmer, Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, those guys were not throwing 30 interceptions a year. Those are Bruce Arians guys.” Brandt made reference to Winston being the teams starting quarterback for five years by very simply stating, “If you’re not sure after five years. Then you are sure.”

During their press conferences, both general manager Jason Licht and Arians have been delivering the same undertones that the team could win with Winston as their quarterback, but they are doing their due diligence and weighing all of their options. Arians went as far as saying that he and the team already know what they are going to do at quarterback, they just haven’t made it public yet. It’s now being discussed among many of my peers that the Buccaneers are a potential landing spot for Tom Brady.

Another take that isn’t being widely discussed, could the Buccaneers trade up into one of the top spots and draft a quarterback? Keeping the defense together has been the top priority for the team, and this would allow them to allocate the majority of money to doing just that.

The April 23rd draft is not very far away, and only time will tell what the Buccaneers will do in preparation for the 2020 season.

How Bills’ Sean McDermott sells Buffalo to free agents

What Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott said about free agency.

The Bills are at the 2020 NFL Combine in Indianapolis this week, figuring out who to put on their draft board ahead of April’s 2020 NFL Draft.

But there’s business to attend to in the middle. As the combine is underway, next up for the Bills and their front office led by general manager Brandon Beane is free agency in March. Who will stay? Who will go? Who will arrive?

While Beane steers the ship, but Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott certainly plays a part in adding potential free agents, too. While on GMFB from the combine on Wednesday, McDermott discussed the message the sends to potential free agents who he could be coveting. Exactly how does he convince players to join the Bills?

The coach said he tries to bring a realistic, honest approach to free agents. One that extends beyond the football field.

“It just comes down to, simply, we’ve got a tremendous culture, a tremendous locker room, and really it’s about a transformational type of locker room, type of culture, as opposed to transactional,” McDermott said. “You come to Buffalo, you’ll become the best version of you that you’ve ever been before. On the field and off the field. Whether it’s college players coming to us via the draft or via free agency with pro players, that’s what we’ve done and that’s what the players have done and that’s really a credit to everyone in our building.”

McDermott’s formula and eye for talent has seemed to work as the Bills have had few busts via free agency. The Bills have touted their preference to build their team through the draft, which is what the organization has mostly done, but the foundation was laid by guys such as Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer in the secondary. They joined the Bills even before Tre’Davious White did, who was McDermott’s first ever draft pick as a head coach in 2017.

Of course, there’s guys like Trent Murphy who aren’t exactly working out perfectly, but the Bills have found a way to nab players with a straight-forward approach. McDermott & Beane will hope that mindset helps them retain their drafted guys in the coming years as well, such as White, who will need contract extensions.

Nate Burleson predicts 1,200 yards, 14 TD’s for DK Metcalf in 2020

Nate Burleson predicted Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf will have 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2020 on ‘Good Morning Football’.

On NFL Network’s ‘Good Morning Football’, former Seattle Seahawks receiver and current analyst Nate Burleson made predictions about a handful of players who will be entering their second season in the league in 2020.

One of those predictions was about Seattle’s own DK Metcalf, and Burleson did not hold back his excitement for the big, speedy wideout.

Burleson predicted 1,200 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns for Metcalf in 2020, numbers that would almost certainly be among the best in the league.

Metcalf definitely impressed in his rookie season, hauling in 58 receptions for 900 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games played.

For him to reach those lofty totals however, the Seahawks will need to throw the ball more – which has never been a huge part of their game – and Metcalf will need to work on his hands, having only hauled in 58 percent of his targets last year.

Seattle would also have to commit to making Metcalf their top target in the red zone – which certainly does not seem out of the question considering his size and leaping ability.

All in all, this is a bold prediction that no doubt represents the absolute best case scenario for Metcalf and the Seahawks in year two.

It’s not completely impossible, however, considering his strong rookie performance and Russell Wilson’s elite play at quarterback.

Watch: GMFB analyst says Bills are ‘America’s spirit animal’

Dallas may still claim to be America’s team, but the Buffalo Bills are taking on a new moniker for the nation.

Dallas may still claim to be America’s team, but the Buffalo Bills are taking on a new moniker for the nation.

The Buffalo Bills Thanksgiving triumph on Thanksgiving Day, in front of a national audience, has put the team on the NFL landscape in a way that hasn’t been viewed in decades. The team’s play has made them a regular piece of conversation on national shows. The Bills, as a topic of conversation, are intruding into segments.

On the NFL Network’s Good Morning Football, the Bills were once again a focal point. Analyst Nate Burleson veer off track, deviated from discussing the Dallas Cowboys and gave Buffalo some love. “I know we’re supposed to talk about the Cowboys and I get it. We have this graphic on the bottom of the screen that shows the Cowboys right there. Let me get this camera. See that graphic right there? With all due respect to the producers, you know what, I’m tired of talking about this team,” Burleson noted.

The analyst then said after discarding his notes, that “I’m tired. This is ridiculous. As talented as they [the Cowboys] are… I get it, they’re America’s Team. Why aren’t we talking about America’s Spirit Animal in the Buffalo Bills?”

Burleson returned to describe Buffalo, the blue collar, nose-to-the-grindstone, bring your lunchpail ready-to-work team as the team that should be receiving the attention.

“America’s Team is the glitz and the glory. The fancy stadium and Jerry Jones talking every single day.” Burleson praised Buffalo, putting them as a symbolic part of the national stage.  “But what do we represent as a country? It’s what the Buffalo Bills represent. You wake up, you go to work, you quietly do your job and then you get the results that you put the work in for.”

The Bills are the antithesis of the Cowboys’ attention-seeking owner and disappointing team.

Burleson also praised quarterback Josh Allen and Cole Beasley for their performance on Thursday. He added, “I love the fact that every other player on this team is backing up a quiet, soft-spoken, praise-deflecting young quarterback who is having one hell of a sophomore season. That’s why I wanted to take a left turn.” Burleson affirmed,

Let’s give the Buffalo Bills respect.

Buffalo’s 26-15 defeat of Dallas has quieted naysayers about the team. Any concerns about the Bills’ scheduled or perceived talent deficits were put to rest as the Bills dominated the Cowboys during the dinner hour on Thanksgiving.

It makes sense that Buffalo would represent the humble and hard-working nature of America.

After all, the Bills wear red, white, and blue. [lawrence-related id=49981,49971,49884,49795]
