Kirk Herbstreit updates his top-six teams

Are they each worthy of their respective jumps and falls?

Week eight of the college football season has come and gone and ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has again updated his short list of top teams in college football.  Despite all six teams he had listed last week winning their last time out there was significant movement for a pair of teams, both of which remain ranked.

Who jumped and who fell then?

Here is how Herbstreit ranked his top six teams in college football after week eight:

Georgia announces captains for Week 1 at Arkansas

Georgia has announced its captains for the Week 1 matchup at Arkansas.

The No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs have announced its captains for the 2020 season opener in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Saturday.  Seniors Richard LeCounte and Malik Herring, as well as junior Jamaree Salyer, have been named the Week 1 captains against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

LeCounte is the leader of the Dawgs defense, tallying 61 tackles and 4 interceptions last year at defensive back.  He was named to the preseason Bednarik Award watch list, an award given each year to college footballs most outstanding defensive player.  It is going to be fun to watch LeCounte playing in his senior season with the Dawgs and really become the veteran leader of this team.

Herring has been a force for the Bulldogs at the defensive end position.  He has played in every game except two since arriving in Athens in 2017.  Herring had 26 tackles, two pass deflections and 18 quarterback hurries in 9 games with Georgia last season.

Salyer will replace now Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson at the right tackle position.  Salyer played in 26 games in his first two seasons with the Dawgs and is expected to be a cornerstone for the offensive line this year.

The Bulldogs kick off against the Razorbacks at 4:00 p.m. ET on SEC Network.

Georgia football at Arkansas: Key player matchups

We take a look at some key player matchups to keep an eye on going into Georgia football’s season opener at Arkansas.

There is officially only one day until Georgia football returns for the 2020 season, kicking off in Fayetteville, Arkansas against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The Dawgs are favored by a whopping 26.5 points (odds courtesy of BetMGM) but there are still some marquee matchups to be seen played out on the field this Saturday.

Georgia LB Nakobe Dean vs. Arkansas RB Rakeem Boyd:

Arkansas senior running back Rakeem Boyd has shown his ability to catch passes in the past, catching a total of 19 last season. The Razorbacks’ new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles will likely try and get creative with this matchup and get Boyd much more involved in the passing game.  Georgia sophomore linebacker Nakobe Dean will need to read Boyd and Briles well this game to not only contain Boyd as a rusher but also as a receiver.  Eliminating Boyd from this game will most likely paralyze Arkansas’ offensive scheme, and it all starts with Dean.

Georgia RB Zamir White vs. Arkansas LB Bumper Pool:

Georgia running back Zamir White is coming off of his biggest game in last years Sugar Bowl, where he rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.  White also has had a strong preseason camp, his knee looking as healthy as ever.  Arkansas linebacker Bumper Pool has some great instincts at the linebacker position and is also a very solid athlete. He was second on the team in tackles and had five pass breakups in 2019.  White will open up a lot of options for Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken, forcing Pool to focus on the run game.  With the addition of junior running back James Cook, ready to take on a much bigger role with D’Andre Swift now in the NFL, Georgia’s running backs could be a matchup nightmare for the Hogs’ linebackers.

Georgia QB D’Wan Mathis and OC Todd Monken vs. Arkansas DC Barry Odom:

Georgia’s offense and Arkansas’ defense both feature a number of new faces this year.  There will be a lot of feeling the other team out early on in this game since neither side has had much of an opportunity to scout the other.  Monken is well know for taking advantage of mismatches so lookout for some deep balls thrown to sophomore wide receiver George Pickens in the Arkansas secondary.  Monken will also probably try and use Cook a lot in the short receiving game once Pickens starts to draw multiple defenders deep.  Georgia has the edge on paper here but they are still starting redshirt freshman quarterback in D’Wan Mathis, who no one has seen much of lately.  Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom will likely lay some early pressure on Mathis and the new Georgia offensive line.  Mathis and the Dawgs offense will need to stay poised and put trust in Monken’s play calling even if they take some hits early on.

Georgia’s secondary vs. Arkansas WR Treylon Burks:

Arkansas sophomore wide receiver Treylon Burks is a complete offensive Swiss-Army Knife.  He stands at 6-foot-3, 232 pounds and was used in the Arkansas run and pass game very well his freshman season.  He was the Razorback’s leader in receiving yards as a freshman but had no touchdowns.  Kendal Briles will definitely try and get Burks involved early with some big plays but he will need to get past a mean Dawgs secondary in Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell, Mark Webb and DJ Daniel.  This should be one of the best matchups of Saturday’s game.

Mathis to Pickens connection looking on point just days away from kickoff

The D’Wan Mathis to George Pickens Georgia football connection has been looking excellent just days away from Week One of Georgia’s season.

Since Jamie Newman’s unexpected decision to opt out of the 2020 college football season due to COVID-19 concerns, all the hype has been surrounding redshirt freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis.

Mathis had surgery to remove a cyst on his brain last year but has since been cleared for football activities.  He now sits as the frontrunner to win the Georgia QB job for the 2020 season.

Mathis has been getting the majority of the first team reps in practice leading up to Week One in Fayetteville, Arkansas against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

In an SEC Inside video of Georgia’s practice, Mathis and sophomore wide receiver George Pickens hook up multiple times for some unreal connections, previewing what we could witness this fall.

WATCH:

Pickens looks like he’s ready to take the conference by storm this year, catching nearly every ball thrown in his radius.  Mathis has also been doing an excellent job of recognizing Pickens’ ability and delivering balls where only he can catch them.

There was a lot of leadership and fire seen in the Dawgs’ practice.  Senior defensive back Richard LeCounte was seen motivating and pushing the  younger players throughout the video, and that is something that head coach Kirby Smart has been preaching since the beginning.

“We have to look ourselves in the mirror, the leaders on the team, the ones that are out here trying to push guys, trying to challenge guys, and say ‘hey man I need more effort out of you,’” Smart said.

“We’ve got to challenge ourselves to get in shape and condition,” he said. “I need somebody on the team to say ‘You know Coach, we’re going to fix that. We’re not afraid of work.

“I need ownership from our team. I need self pride. I need conditioning pride. I need toughness. I need guys to play good.”

With USC transfer JT Daniels still nursing an ACL tear back to full health, Mathis was the only quarterback featured in the video, hinting that the job is likely his.

If we see anything like the highlights from this video, Georgia’s air raid offense will be firing on all cylinders in 2020.

Notre Dame Preseason Top 5? One Analyst Says Yes

With the strange feel around college football entering 2020, one preseason ranking now has Notre Dame in the top 5. Find out who, here.

Preseason polls have been out for sometime now as the both the AP Top 25 and Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY were released earlier this month amid the confusion of ranking teams even though they’re not playing football this fall.

Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY went ahead and ranked the 76 teams that will be playing FBS college football this season and he gave Notre Dame as much respect as any I’ve seen from any national outlet ahead of the 2020 campaign, as he ranked the Irish fifth.

Myerberg’s top ten went the following:

  1.  Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Notre Dame
  6. Florida
  7. LSU
  8. Texas
  9. UCF
  10. North Carolina

Myerberg ranked Notre Dame’s 11 opponents for the 2020 season as follows:

1.  Clemson
10.  North Carolina
24.  Pitt
25.  Louisville
28.  Florida State
41.  Duke
44.  Wake Forest
52.  Boston College
60.  South Florida
64.  Syracuse
68.  Georgia Tech

A battle of potential top ten teams the day after Thanksgiving in Chapel Hill?  North Carolina is improved but even in this strange fall to come that seems a bit strong to me.

Georgia football offers scholarship to Damarius McGhee

Georgia football has offered 2021 3-star ATH/CB Damarius Mcghee out of Pensacola, FL.

Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have extended an offer to 2021 3-star cornerback Damarius Mcghee, out of Pensacola, Florida.

Mcghee is listed as a cornerback on 247Sports, but he can pretty much do it all. In his Twitter bio, McGhee states that he also plays wide receiver and quarterback for Pensacola Catholic team.

Last season, Mcghee completed 5/10 pass attempts for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns. He had 14 carries for 70 yards and three touchdowns and he caught 20 passes for 433 yards and 3 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 47 tackles, 6 interceptions, and 5 punt blocks.

Mcghee is expected to play cornerback at the collegiate level, even though he could play on either side of the ball.

247Sports has him listed as the 31st best cornerback in the 2021 class and the No. 54 player in Florida.

Check out a sneak peek of Damarius’ athleticism here:

Vote: Which former Dawg drafted best basketball team made up of Georgia football players?

We asked four former Bulldogs to draft a basketball team made up of Georgia football players. Vote for your favorite here.

The UGA Wire staff voted and we gave our starting five that we would take if we were drafting a pick-up basketball team composed of Georgia football players.

Next, we reached out to former Georgia players Isaiah Wilson, Mecole Hardman, Tavarres King and Dannell Ellerbe to get their starting five of former or current players.

The players only had one rule: They were asked to draft players who played at Georgia from the time they started their careers to present day.

(Example: Mecole Hardman, who started playing for Georgia in 2016, was able to choose UGA players from 2016-2020.)

(Another example: Dannell Ellerbe, who played for Georgia from 2004-8, was able to choose UGA players from 2004-2020.)

So, the older players certainly had an advantage, but let’s see who had the best squad.

Now, it’s time for you to vote on which of these five squads you would take.

Here are the teams:

Vote for the best team at the bottom.

1. Team UGA Wire (We picked from current players only):

Point Guard: Jamie Newman (6-4, quarterback)

Shooting Guard: Richard LeCounte (5-11, safety)

Small Forward: George Pickens (6-3, wide receiver)

Power Forward: Jermaine Johnson (6-5, outside linebacker)

Center: Darnell Washington (6-7.5, tight end/defensive end)

We went with all current Georgia players for our picks to keep things in the present, even though we gave players to option to pick former Dawgs.

Wake Forest transfer QB Jamie Newman would be a commanding point guard with great court vision, complemented by an athletic and scrappy defender in the backcourt with Richard LeCounte. George Pickens would be the go-to scorer while JJ and D-Wash would hold things down in the paint.

2. Team Zay (Isaiah Wilson)

Able to choose Georgia players between 2017-20:

Point Guard: Jamie Newman (6-4, quarterback)

Shooting Guard: Richard LeCounte (5-11, safety)

Small Forward: George Pickens (6-3, wide receiver)

Power Forward: Bill Norton (6-6, defensive tackle)

Center: Jordan Davis (6-6, defensive tackle)

There were a lot of similarities between Isaiah’s team and ours, both selecting Newman, LeCounte and Pickens. Wilson then went with size in his picks, taking defensive tackles Bill Norton and Jordan Davis (both standing at 6-6) as his front court.

3. Team JET (Mecole Hardman)

Able to choose Georgia players between 2016-20:

Point Guard: Terry Godwin (5-11, wide receiver)

Shooting Guard: Javon Wims (6-2, wide receiver)

Small Forward: Richard LeCounte (5-11, safety)

Power Forward: Lorenzo Carter (6-5, linebacker)

Center: Davin Bellamy (6-5, linebacker)

Mecole’s team would have a lot of skill and finesse with Godwin and Wims in the backcourt while also being very physical with Carter and Bellamy defending the paint.  Mecole’s big men are physical but also are quite athletic and in shape, giving them stretch 4 and 5 capabilities on offense.

4. Team TK (Tavarres King)

Able to choose Georgia players between 2008-20:

Point Guard: Tavarres King (6-2 wide receiver)

Shooting Guard: Brandon Boykin (5-10, cornerback)

Small Forward: A.J. Green (6-4, wide receiver)

Power Forward: Marlon Brown (6-5, wide receiver)

Center: Fred Gibson (6-4, wide receiver)

King went with a four receiver team, adding cornerback Brandon Boykin because he clearly has crazy hops. Believe it or not, Freddy Gibson actually had a short stint in the NBA D League (now the G League) with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds and the Austin Toros.

TK gave a little analysis to go along with his selections:

“Tried to go all WR squad but Boykin my son so he can play on my team. 🤣 I like that squad though! Other Hoopers: Justin Houston, Clint Boling, Rambo.”

5. Team 2 Rings (Dannell)

Point Guard: D.J. Shockley (6-1, quarterback)

Shooting Guard: Tony Taylor (6-0, linebacker)

Small Forward: Antonio Sims (6-1, safety)

Power Forward: Quentin Moses (6-5, defensive end)

Center: Leonard Pope (6-8, tight end)

Ellerbe’s squad is old-school, and may include a few names that are unfamiliar to some of our younger readers. Ellerbe showed some love to two of the greatest to ever do it at Georgia, Quentin Moses and Leonard Pope. Both of these men were monsters in Athens and can play bully ball down low.

Now that you have the teams, it’s your turn to vote.

Vote for your favorite team here. There are no losers, just Dawgs.

Georgia football recruiting: Bulldogs offer New Orleans WR

Georgia football has offered 2022 receiver out of New Orleans, LA. See the latest Bulldog recruiting news here.

Coronavirus can’t stop Kirby Smart and the recruiting train that is Georgia football (keeping socially distant of course).

The Dawgs have offered class of 2022 wide receiver Aaron Anderson out of Edna Karr High School in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Anderson is going into his junior year of high school and is already making his name heard as one of the highest recruited receiver in his class.  He stands at 5’7″, 182 lbs and shows incredible agility and after-the-catch ability.

WATCH Aaron Anderson high school highlights:

Anderson is currently ranked as the 52nd best receiver in his class and 15th in Louisiana by 247Sports.  He is smaller than the average college receiver, but Anderson’s talent shows a great upside with lots of time left for him to grow.

The Dawgs have also offered the #2 pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy, the #1 running back Raleek Brown, and the #1 dual-threat quarterback Gunner Stockton, along with a number of other highly rated recruits among the 2022 class.

Georgia currently has no commitments in the 2022 class.
