Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022

Georgia State lost the first two games to North Carolina and Army by a combined score of 102-27, and dropped the date to Appalachian State a few weeks later 45-16 for a 1-4 start.

Even with the schedule lightening up … a 7-1 run with a win at Coastal Carolina, a victory over Georgia Southern, and a 51-20 blowout bowl win over Ball State?

That’s how you turn a season and a program around.

Three straight winning seasons, three straight bowl games, four bowl appearances in five years – it’s been a good run for Georgia State as it grows into more and more of a factor in the Sun Belt.

Even with all of the changes and the new programs coming in, the potential is there for this to be the best season yet since becoming a full-on FCS team back in 2013.

Head coach Shawn Elliott has settled in, the team is loaded with good veterans and playmakers, and with the momentum of the second half of last season, this is when it’s fun to be a Georgia State fan.

Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022: Offense

The offense wasn’t always perfect, and it loaded up on a whole slew of mediocre teams, but it got the job done. The running game was fantastic, the passing attack was more effective than the stats, and the parts are there to be far more consistent and far better because …

This might not be the best offensive line in the Sun Belt, but it’s going to be very, very good. Malik Sumter was a Second Team All-Sun Belt center, Pat Bartlett was a Third Team All-Sun Belt guard, and almost everyone else is back with only former star guard Shamarious Gilmore done.

The veteran backs will thrive. Tucker Gregg is a reliable 220-pound occasional workhorse who averaged close to five yards per carry on his 953 yards, fellow senior Jamyest Williams is a quick back who transferred over from South Carolina and ran for 6.7 yards per carry with nine scores, and the rushing production will come from …

Darren Grainger. The 6-4, 202-pound senior wasn’t always accurate, but he threw just four picks with 19 touchdown passes.

Slippery-fast, he took off for 646 yards and three scores – he gave Auburn a hard time and was almost perfect in the bowl win over Ball State. Now he has to be more consistent as a passer. UConn transfer Steven Krajewski is a nice backup option.

The receiving corps is loaded. San Pinckney transferred to Coastal Carolina, but Jamari Thrash led the team with 32 grabs averaging over 14 yards per catch.

TE Aubrey Payne led the team with seven touchdown catches, Ja’Cyais Credle is a 6-4 deep threat, and there are a slew of young options in the mix.

Georgia State Panthers Preview 2022: Defense

The defense has to be better on third downs, the secondary has to be stronger, and it has to rise up against the good offenses on the slate, but the pass rush should once again be terrific, there’s a slew of potential all-star talent, and as long as the takeaways are coming, all should be okay.

The pass rush and big plays come from the linebackers. Jamil Muhammad wasn’t always a starter, but he led the team with six sacks from his set on the outside. The inside combination of Blake Carroll and Jordan Veneziale are tough – they combined for 186 tackles as the team’s top two hitters.

The line isn’t massive, but there’s a good rotation. Again, most of the pass rush comes from the linebackers, but as long as the three in the 3-4 can hold up, and if Thomas Gore can keep getting behind the line from his spot on the nose, this group will do its job.

Safety Antavious Lane has been one of the best defensive backs in the Sun Belt over the last few years, and the corners can tackle.

Georgia State vs Ball State TaxAct Camellia Bowl Preview

There are few more even-looking bowl games of the season – it should make for an entertaining, competitive battle if everything goes according to form.

Ball State struggled late in the season with three losses in the last five games, but it’s got a good offensive line, the defense takes the ball away, and it doesn’t beat itself with a whole lot of big mistakes.

Georgia State ripped through the second half of the year with six wins in the last seven games, and like Ball State it’s got a great offensive line, is great at forcing turnovers, and it doesn’t beat itself with a whole lot of big mistakes.

The Panthers don’t control the clock for all that long, but it’s able to make the most of its possessions with their quick style – and its defense’s inability to come up with enough third down stops. It’s the exact same thing for the Cardinals.

The main difference is with the rushing offense. Georgia State’s attack averaged 225 yards per game with consistent production after the first two games of the season. On the other side, Ball State needs to generate its own breaks and has to win the turnover margin to win.

Georgia State vs Troy Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

Troy will be playing to extend its season.

Georgia State already has bowl eligibility wrapped up. Troy lost its last two games – it happened to play the two best teams in the Sun Belt, Louisiana and Appalachian State – and it lost three of its last four games.

The Troy pass rush continues to be great, the defense has the ability to take the ball away in bunches – five takeaways in the last two games – and the offensive side has the ability to crank up the passing game.

Georgia State’s secondary gives up over 200 yards for breakfast – it allowed 230 passing yards or more in each of the last eight games.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Georgia State Will Win

Troy is going through a wee bit of a transition.

The team is still in the hunt for a bowl game, it happened to lose to the two stars of the Sun Belt – and to Coastal Carolina within the last month – and head coach Chip Lindsey was sacked.

Georgia State is playing well. It pushed Louisiana in a tough 21-17 loss, and that’s the only loss in the last six games with a strong win at Coastal Carolina right after.

The running game has been fantastic – averaging 222 yards per game – and it should do something new and control the game. The Panthers are normally awful in the time of possession battle, but that’s not a problem against a Troy team that keeps the ball for just over 27 minutes a game.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State is playing too well.

Troy might be more emotional and more desperate, but it’s not going to matter with the Georgia State offense getting its running game going and the defensive front allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards.

It’ll be a good battle, but Georgia State will be come up with two late scoring drives to get by in the home finale.

Arkansas State vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

Well there’s the passing game.

It’s been a rough year overall for Arkansas State with eight straight losses after opening with a win over Central Arkansas, but at least the air show was fun – and then it wasn’t.

The Red Wolves failed to hit 200 yards though the air – and couldn’t get to 225 yards overall – in ugly losses to South Alabama and Appalachian State, and then everything clicked with Layne Hatcher bombing away for 444 yards  in the 27-24 win over ULM.

Georgia State’s secondary is struggling – to be nice – but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Georgia State Will Win

It has at least one pick in each of the last five games. This matters because Arkansas State is all too happy to keep giving the ball away.

Georgia State’s offense has been a bit hit-or-miss over the second half of the season, but it’s been good enough to win four of the last five games helped by nine takeaways overall and a grand total of one turnover.

The Panthers have a whopping turnover margin of +8 over the five-game stretch. Meanwhile, Arkansas State has turned it over eight times in the last three games.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State got the win it needed to have to set up a wee bit of a breather over the last two weeks. It beat a Coastal Carolina team that didn’t have Grayson McCall, and now the Sun Belt title dreams are still on.

It needs Appalachian State to lose a few times, so more realistically, this is the game for the 5-5 Panthers to get bowl eligible – it doesn’t want to have to beat Troy next week.

Arkansas State will want to make this a shootout, but the defensive side is about to get ripped through – the two giveaways aren’t going to help.

Georgia State vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The offense isn’t the same without Grayson McCall.

The Coastal Carolina offense wasn’t the machine rolls over the mediocre teams, but it didn’t blow up against Appalachian State or Georgia Southern, and the yards didn’t produce a ton of points in the 35-28 win over Troy. Now the star quarterback is out, and veteran Bryce Carpenter is in.

The Chanticleers won 28-8 over Georgia Southern thanks to the defense and running game, but Carpenter threw for just 85 yards, and now gets a Georgia State defense that’s been solid overall against the pass.

It will give up 200 yards or so if everything is working, but it won’t get gouged.

The Georgia State rushing offense has been terrific – tearing off over 200 yards in each of the last four games and in six of the last seven.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Coastal Carolina is still terrific.

It might not be the same without McCall, but the ground attack took over with 220 yards against Georgia Southern and ran for over 200 yards against everyone but Appalachian State.

There’s a good rotation, everyone is fresh, and the offense should be able to dink and dunk enough to keep things moving against a Georgia State team that doesn’t do a whole lot to control the clock.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

No, this isn’t the Coastal Carolina offense of the past few seasons, but it’s still good enough and the defense continues to be great.

Georgia State needs to run the ball – and it should – but it’ll come up just short as the second half rolls on. It’ll be a close, entertaining game that will come down to moving the chains.

Coastal Carolina will do it when needed, and Georgia State won’t.

Georgia State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

On a three-game winning streak, the Panthers have kicked in the running game with close to 900 yards on the ground over the stretch while also being able to balance it all out with an effective passing game to keep everything moving.

There are problems – the yards aren’t always translating into points – but the defense has been able to hold up in key moments and allowing 19 points per game overall.

Can it handle the running game? Does it have the front line to hold up against the Louisiana attack? It was able to keep the Georgia Southern quirky ground game to just over 200 yards and held Army to 258 – teams aren’t gouging the Panthers.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Louisiana Will Win

Again, for all of the good things Georgia State is doing, it’s having a hard time putting the biscuit in the basket.

The passing game isn’t efficient enough, the offense doesn’t hold on to the ball for long – the O is on the field for under 28 minutes per game, and …

The pass defense. That’s the problem. The Panthers don’t get destroyed, but they’re good for giving up over 250 yards through the air.

Louisiana is managing to do what it must to get things moving. It would like to run, but Levi Lewis and the passing game can balance it all out without a problem … and it will.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana, Northwestern, San Jose State, Ball State, Liberty, Iowa State – to a certain extent – it’s been hard for all of the darlings of 2020 to keep the mojo going in 2021.

Louisiana has made it happen, and all with a bit of an overhaul in a few key spots.

This isn’t always the most dynamic of teams like past versions were, but it keeps getting the job done.

Georgia State has the offense to win this, but it doesn’t have the D. It’ll keep up and make it a fun game, but the Ragin’ Cajuns will pull off another weeknight victory as they take the Sun Belt West title.

It’ll be a fight, though, into the fourth.

Georgia State vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The passing game has been on as part of an offense that’s kicked it all into high gear.

The running game has been terrific over the last five games – hitting 267 yards or more in four of the last five – but Darren Grainger has thrown for 430 yards and six touchdowns with no picks in the last two wins.

Georgia Southern has been better with the passing attack, but that’s because it hasn’t been strong enough at its day job. When the running game is rolling, everything is fine. However, its only two wins came when tearing off 365 yards or more – with over 500 on Arkansas State – and it’s 0-5 when it doesn’t.

The Georgia State defense hasn’t allowed more than 166 rushing yards in any of the last five games and hasn’t allowed more than 258 all year – Army got the one big yardage day. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

The Eagles absolutely have to run and keep running and keep running some more to try shortening the game and controlling the clock.

Georgia State’s passing attack really has been better, and that’s an issue – Georgia Southern has the nation’s worst pass defense. However, the Panthers don’t control the clock – the idea of the attack is to go, go, go – and the passing game isn’t all that efficient.

The Eagles don’t have a turnover problem, they should be able to hold the ball for close to 34 minutes, and …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a good rivalry game that often defies logic and reason, but Georgia State should be able to bomb at will on the beleaguered Georgia Southern secondary.

The Eagles have allowed 330 passing yards or more in five of the seven games and gave up way over 200 in the other two. Even so, for the first time all year Georgia State will play in a relatively tight game – again, rivalry.
