Southern Miss vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Can Southern Miss finally get any offense going?

It has a nightmare of a time on third downs, no one gives up more plays in the backfield, and it’s the worst attack in the nation overall, averaging just 246 yards per game whether they need them or not.

However, Louisiana Tech’s defense will give up yards.

UAB ran all over the Bulldogs, Charlotte threw for 448, and overall the defense is among the worst in the country. Part of the reason will mean a huge break for the Southern Miss O line …

Louisiana Tech struggles to get into the backfield.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Oh yeah, again, Southern Miss has the worst offense in college football, and it’s not getting any better.

It hasn’t hit 260 yards in any of the last five games, the passing attack isn’t doing anything down the field, and worst of all there are lots and lots and lots of turnovers.

The Golden Eagles have to press, and that leads to a whole slew of problems. They’ve given the ball away 17 times in the last six games.

Louisiana Tech’s defense might be awful, but it’s happy to take the ball away.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a rough, rough year for both teams.

They’ve both been wildly disappointing, and they’re both going to end up with a losing campaign, but Southern Miss really, really can’t get the offense going.

Even with QB Austin Kendall out with a back injury last week, Aaron Allen was able to stop in and throw for 324 yards. The team will find offensive production from somewhere, Southern Miss won’t.

Houston vs Memphis Game Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

The Tigers will be well motivated – they need this to go bowling.

There’s still a home game against a horrible Tulane team to get it done, but it’s more than that. In a weird, inconsistent year with losses to mediocre Tulsa and East Carolina teams and wins over Mississippi State and SMU, beating Houston on a Friday night with everyone watching would be a big deal.

The offense has been hit-or-miss, but it’s got a good enough passing game to push a Houston defense that’s statistically great, but hasn’t faced a whole slew of high-powered attacks.

Give credit for holding down Texas Tech in the opener, but it was a loss. The D got lit up by the SMU passing game for over 300 yards – the only time this year that happened – and gave up 289 yards to USF, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Houston Will Win

Houston won.

Just as the defense can up with two of its worst games of the year, the offense stepped it up with over 1,000 yards combined against the Mustangs and Bulls.

And yes, the defense really is playing that well. It’s been part of the buildup under head coach Dana Holgorsen, and now he has a killer.

The offense is still fun. It controls the clock, it has good balance, and it can be tough, but it’s the other side that’s taking over with a ton of sacks, a ton of takeaways, and a whole lot of big production against the run.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Very, very quietly, Houston has snuck up on everyone.

The league might be all about Cincinnati, Cincinnati, and Cincinnati, but Houston can make its way into the American Athletic Conference Championship with a win here and a shot at – assuming the Bearcats beat SMU this weekend – taking down the media darling and get into a New Year’s Six bowl.

First, it has to hold up in a home shootout in what should be a fun game with lots of big plays early on. The Cougar defense will settle in and take over in the second half.

San Diego State vs UNLV Game Preview

Why San Diego State Will Win

Everything’s there for the taking.

Beat UNLV, beat Boise State, and it’s off to the Mountain West Conference championship – it would be nice if Fresno State would drop a game to make this easy – and then hope for a Cincinnati loss so a New Year’s Six bowl could be on the table, and …

First, just take care of UNLV.

The Aztec defense continues to be among the best in America. It allowed just 306 yards per game, it held Carson Strong and Nevada when it absolutely had to, and now the D and the great running game get a UNLV team that’s playing better, but won’t be able to hold up on the lines.

For all of the positive things the Rebels are doing, they’re not doing enough against the run. The didn’t allow anything against Nevada, but that’s because Strong bombed away for over 400 yards. San Jose State and New Mexico ran well, and so will San Diego State.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why UNLV Will Win

San Diego State has the type of style that keeps both teams in the game.

It’s got a few blowouts under its belt, but whether it’s San Jose State, or Hawaii, or New Mexico State, it doesn’t usually jump out and put the game away with ease. It’s more like it grinds, holds on, and then it all seems to workout.

Fresno State was able to get up with the passing attack and put up 485 yards – the only time San Diego State allowed over 400 yards. UNLV has the capability to get the O going. It ran for close to 300 yards last week in the win over Hawaii, it scared Fresno State with 281 passing yards, and at home, it has to bust out and make San Diego State’s conservative offense press from jump.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

UNLV will come out hot and get up in the first quarter, and then the San Diego State steamroller will start to take over.

The Aztecs will start grinding out the running game, the defense will force two key takeaways, and then everything will turn in the third quarter.

Like most San Diego State games, it will seem like the other side is still in it if it can just catch one break. But that’s not happening.

Air Force vs Nevada Game Preview

Why Air Force Will Win

Can Nevada stop the run?

Sort of.

The defensive front has been fantastic all year long at getting into the backfield, and it hasn’t had to deal with a whole slew of running teams with everyone throwing to keep up, but it couldn’t do enough against San Diego State’s ground game last week, and lost.

It only gave up 186 to the Aztecs, but in the scheme of that game, that mattered. The allowed over 200 rushing yards to Fresno State and lost. They allowed 269 rushing yards to Kansas State and lost.

Air Force is No. 1 in the nation in rushing, averaging over 300 yards per game.

Again, Nevada should be able to generate pressure with its line – that’s what it does – but Air Force is among the best teams in the nation in tackles for loss allowed.

On the flip side ….

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Nevada Will Win

Can Air Force stop the pass?

Sort of.

The secondary has been statistically terrific throughout the season allowing just 184 yards per game, but it faced two teams that throw. Utah State cranked up 448 yards and five scores, Boise State threw for 259 yards and a score, and now it’s Carson Strong’s turn to have some fun.

Beaten up in the San Diego State game, Strong and the passing attack still flung it around for 350 yards for the team’s sixth straight games with 300 yards or more.

The O doesn’t have a problem with turnovers, it should be able to own third downs, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Its Senior Night for the Wolf Pack.

The team will go bowling, and there’s still a date at Colorado State to go, but the Mountain West title hopes are all but gone after the gut-punch loss to San Diego State.

Air Force has been fantastic. All three losses were by seven points or fewer, the defense really is that good, and the ground game will control things for long stretches.

But Nevada and Strong will be too much as the offense takes over late with two key scoring drives that force Air Force out of its comfort zone.

Louisville vs Duke Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

It’s been a strange and tough run for a Louisville team trying to get bowl eligible, but this is when the offense has to take off.

Duke’s offense has been spotty, but it’s the defensive side that’s the true disaster, especially against anyone who can throw.

Louisville QB Malik Cunningham is coming off this best game of the year in the team’s best performance of the season. He hit 73% of his passes with four scores in the 41-3 win over Syracuse, and now he goes against the nation’s second-worst pass defense.

The Blue Devils are giving up over 300 passing yards per game, and Louisville should come close. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Duke Will Win

Louisville’s defense has improved, but it’s about to get run on.

Duke’s ground game hasn’t been able to keep the production going after a great first half of the season, but the offense pushed for close to 200 yards in last week’s loss to Virginia Tech.

The offense is trying to find something that works for the passing game, getting freshman Riley Leonard some meaningful work – he can run a little bit. Louisville’s secondary is just leaky enough to give up over 200 yards. Duke has the parts, they just have to work.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Duke’s offensive parts aren’t working because the lines aren’t getting the job done.

Louisville will get up fast, it’ll turn to the offensive line to take over – the Cardinal front five is good in pass protection – and it’ll be on cruise control in the fourth quarter.

Tennessee vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

The offense might be struggling a bit, but the defense continues to be just interesting and good enough to have a good moments.

The Jaguars are great on third downs, the secondary doesn’t give up a ton of passing yards, and the run D is the best in the Sun Belt. The overall style of play helps.

This isn’t a team that’s going to move in a hurry – it’s going to control the clock for at least 35 minutes against the warp-speed Tennessee O. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Tennessee Will Win

The South Alabama offense has stalled.

The defense might be just good enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but losing former South Carolina QB Jake Bentley to a knee injury – he’s trying to get back; he’s practicing – has been a problem. USA doesn’t have the pop to keep up.

The Tennessee passing game should keep hitting the downfield play – South Alabama’s secondary gives up lots of yards per pass, even if it doesn’t give up a ton of yards overall – and will try turning the lights out in a hurry because …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee is going to care.

If this was just a letdown game after dealing with Georgia and with Vanderbilt to close, there might be a concern against a team with a feisty defense that can keep this interesting.

However, Tennessee is bowl eligible with a win. It’s not going to want to mess around in this. It might take a half to put it away, but the O will get there.

Ole Miss vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Start running, get running, and don’t believe that the Ole Miss defense really is all that great.

The Rebels were able to stuff Texas A&M last week, but Liberty and Auburn ran well as part of a run of five games in six with the opponents hitting the 200-yard mark.

Vanderbilt might not have a consistent ground game, but it was able to crank up the production against Missouri and has to at least give it a shot.

Run, keep the turnovers to a minimum, try to control the clock a bit and keep Matt Corral off the field, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The Ole Miss offense could put this away immediately.

Vanderbilt ran well against Missouri, and that’s been about it for the rushing production in SEC play. The passing attack doesn’t have the firepower to keep up – it hasn’t hit 200 yards in four of the last five games – but the defense is every bit as bad.

The Commodore D isn’t getting any help from the O, and vice versa. The defense allowed over 400 yards in every game against FBS teams and should get hit for at least 500.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Vanderbilt will be plucky.

Ole Miss is a bit banged up, it’s coming off a big win over Texas A&M, and it has to play Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl a few days later. The dream will be to get this done in the first quarter, sit Corral and company as soon as possible, and get ready for the showdown.

The Commodores will score just enough to make Ole Miss try deep into the second half, and then the explosion will come.

Auburn vs South Carolina Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

And there’s the South Carolina offense going back to being the South Carolina offense.

It actually hasn’t been all that bad throughout the season, but the running game failed to do much of anything before ripping up Florida for close to 300 yards. Last week against Missouri’s awful defense? 57.

Which Auburn defense will show up? If it’s the one that decided to leave last week’s Mississippi State game early and couldn’t seem to so much right against Arkansas or Georgia, there’s a problem. If it’s the one that’s solid at getting into the backfield and can stuff the run, everything will be fine.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why South Carolina Will Win

Is TJ Finley ready for his big moment?

Auburn QB Bo Nix is out for the rest of the regular season with a foot injury, and now the offense has to perk up despite the loss of its growing star. Finley is hardly new to the SEC spotlight, but he’ll have to avoid mistakes against a South Carolina defense that’s great at taking the ball away.

The Gamecocks come up with lots and lots of picks.

Auburn doesn’t care much about the time of possession battle and the Gamecocks need to grind it out, get the ground game going, and make Finley for throws.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Finley will be more than fine.

The massive 6-7, 250-pound bomber won’t be asked to win the game all bit himself, but he already proved this year that he could step in and come through, saving the day in the Georgia State thriller.

Last year against South Carolina, he completed 17-of-21 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns with a pick … when he played for LSU.

He won’t do that, but he’ll overcome a few picks to keep things moving, and the running game and defense will take it from there.

Florida vs Missouri Game Preview

Why Florida Will Win

Florida is still good.

It might have been a disaster against South Carolina, and the Samford game was way too much of a problem, and …

The offense still works, and the Missouri defense doesn’t.

Oh sure, there are massive issues – more on that in a moment – but the Gators are able to run well, the offense has the ability to push for close to 500 yards if the passing game is clicking, and the Missouri defense gives up lots and lots and lots of yards.

It did a nice job against South Carolina, but it got thrown on by Georgia, run on by Vanderbilt and Texas, and it has a problem on third downs against just about everyone.

This is going to be a shootout, and Florida knows how to keep up. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Missouri Will Win

The Florida defense has decided to take the rest of 2021 off.

It was a bit problem in key moments in 2020, but that was 2020 – whatever. But LSU hasn’t been able to run on anyone, and it cranked up over 300 rushing yards in the win over the Gators a few weeks ago.

South Carolina hasn’t been able to consistently run on anyone, and it ran wild on in the 40-17 win. And then came last week – Samford threw for over 400 yards and kept pushing in the 70-56 loss.

Mizzou QB Connor Bazelak might still be a bit banged up, and he throws for too many picks, but he should have a good day, and RB Tyler Badie – with three 200-yard days in the last five – should go off.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s the thing about Missouri over the years. It usually beats the teams it’s supposed to, it usually loses to the teams it’s supposed to, and then it all comes down to the 50/50 games.

It lost the 50/50 game at Boston College, and it couldn’t hold up on the road against Kentucky and Tennessee. Now it gets a trending-down Florida team at home with a shot at getting bowl eligible, and the offense will go off.

Don’t watch this if you like defense in any way. It might be a last-at-bat-wins sort of shootout.

Alabama vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Hogs might have the style and the demeanor to handle the moment.

They’re well past being bowl eligible, they’re on a three-game winning streak with good victories over Mississippi State and LSU, and they’re effectively playing with house money – there’s no pressure.

The offense might not be rolling – it had a bit of a rough day against LSU – but the defense is fantastic on third downs, the offense isn’t making a whole lot of mistakes – there aren’t too many turnovers – and Alabama has been a tad flaky.

Is this going to be the Tide team that sputtered and struggled against LSU and for way too long against Tennessee, or …

Why Alabama Will Win

Can Bama crank up the explosion to end this right away?

Arkansas can score – it kept up in the shootout loss to Ole Miss – but that’s not the team’s style. It doesn’t control the clock or the time of possession battle, but it has a way of making teams play its style. Alabama can end that with a few early scores.

Yes, the Hog defense is among the best in the country on third downs, but Alabama leads the nation converting 57% of its tries, the run defense has been a rock – Florida is the only team that could run at all on this group – and while the offense has been a bit inconsistent, it’s been getting the job done when it absolutely has to.

What’s Going To Happen

This is scary for Alabama considering it ran for just six yards against LSU a few weeks ago and the Arkansas run D hasn’t allowed more than 135 since getting ripped up by Ole Miss in early October.

Bama will come out roaring with an early score, and then things will settle in. Arkansas will keep this close and tight, but the passing game firepower by the home side will take over in the second half.

There were be plenty of chances for the Hogs to push through, but the Alabama defense will hold firm just enough to give the offense time to come up with a few good scoring drives.
