Underrated Georgia football rivalry ranked among the expanded SEC’s best

The Georgia-South Carolina rivalry is ranked as the SEC’s best rivalry that won’t be played in 2024 or 2025

The expanded SEC is awesome. The conference should be as competitive as ever following the additions of Texas and Oklahoma.

However, the 16-team SEC is sacrificing some historic rivalries in the new conference schedule. Perhaps most notably, the Georgia Bulldogs will not play the South Carolina Gamecocks this fall for the first time since 1991. Georgia also will not play the Gamecocks in 2025.

Georgia and South Carolina have an extensive history. South Carolina was the last team to beat Georgia in Athens. The Gamecocks and Bulldogs often battled for SEC East supremacy over the years. When South Carolina hired former Florida coach Steve Spurrier it added further fuel to the Georgia-South Carolina rivalry.

In fact, Will Backus of CBS Sports ranks the Georgia-South Carolina as the top rivalry in the SEC that will not be played in 2024.

“There is a natural distaste for Georgia among Gamecocks faithful,” said Backus. “The two programs share a recruiting footprint … there’s no love lost here.” Georgia’s hiring of former South Carolina coach Will Muschamp is another point of contention between the two fan bases.

Georgia-South Carolina is considered the 16th-best rivalry in the SEC. Georgia is in a unique situation in the expanded SEC. The Bulldogs have too many rivalries to protect.

Georgia’s top rivals in the SEC are the Florida Gators, but the Dawgs’ historic rivalry with the Auburn Tigers is among the conference’s most-heated and most-played rivalries. Additionally, Georgia has strong rivalries with Tennessee and South Carolina. The old format of the SEC allowed Georgia to play all four of these rivals every season, but now Georgia has just one permanent rival: Florida.

It is obvious the expanded SEC needs to move to a nine-game conference schedule, which would allow for Georgia to have multiple protected rivalries.

Georgia football Week 3 stock report: Run game shines

Here’s our Week 3 Georgia stock report…

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs moved to 3-0 on the season after a gritty 24-14 comeback win over the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday.

This was our first opportunity to see the Bulldogs take on an SEC team and there were certainly some miscues and missed chances. Georgia trailed 14-3 at the half after untimely red zone mishaps and poor tackling gave the Gamecocks life.

The Bulldogs looked like an entirely new team in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points en route to their 20th-straight win.

Which Dawgs stood out against South Carolina? Which players left something to be desired with their Week 3 performance?

The Georgia Bulldogs turned it around after getting off to a sluggish start against the South Carolina Gamecocks. South Carolina outscored Georgia 14-3 in the first half. The Bulldogs failed to capitalize on a few red zone opportunities in the first half.

However, Georgia bounced back in the second half. The Dawgs outscored South Carolina 21-0 after the break. Georgia disrupted Spencer Rattler more in the second half. Rattler completed just 25% of his passes in the second half.

The Dawgs forced two turnovers. Georgia quarterback Carson Beck avoided turnovers, but did not play a great game. He finished with 269 passing yards with no touchdown passes and no interceptions.

Georgia running back Daijun Edwards had a huge game. He ran for 118 rushing yards on 20 carries and had a rushing touchdown.

Georgia overcame some adversity in its first SEC game of the season, but the Bulldogs will need to be sharper in order to make the College Football Playoff.

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) will take on the South Carolina Gamecocks (1-1) to begin SEC play on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Bulldogs dominated non-Power Five opponents UT Martin and Ball State in the first two weeks. This will be the first test for Georgia and first-year starting quarterback Carson Beck.

The loaded Georgia defense hasn’t been challenged yet, but it hasn’t played down to lesser opponents either. The Bulldogs have allowed 10 points thus far.

South Carolina is trying to save its season after a crushing 31-17 loss to No. 20 North Carolina in Week 1. Furman didn’t stand a chance against former UGA assistant Shane Beamer’s Gamecocks last week. It was crushed 47-21.

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart is fired up as the Bulldogs head into their SEC opener against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Former Auburn legend predicts that South Carolina will upset Georgia

Former Auburn Tigers legend Takeo Spikes predicts that Spencer Rattler will help South Carolina upset UGA.

Former Auburn Tigers legend Takeo Spikes predicts that the South Carolina Gamecocks will upset the Georgia Bulldogs this season.

Spikes was the No. 13 pick in the 1998 NFL draft. He went on to have a lengthy NFL career that lasted from 1998-2012. Spikes played high school football at Washington County High School in Sandersville, Georgia.

Why does Takeo Spikes think that South Carolina will upset Georgia at home in week three of the 2022 college football season?

The former Auburn linebacker thinks South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler will the key reason why the Gamecocks will upset the defending national champions. Georgia does not have much tape on Rattler against SEC opponents and has not had any previous chances to prepare for him.

Here’s the bold prediction that Spikes made on the SEC Network:

Georgia will be heavily favored when the Dawgs face South Carolina on Sept. 17. The Bulldogs open the season against Oregon on Sept. 3 in Atlanta and then face Samford on Sept. 10 in Athens. South Carolina will be Georgia’s first road game of the season.

The Gamecocks play at Arkansas the week before hosting Georgia.

5 reasons why Georgia beats South Carolina

UGA takes on South Carolina Saturday night in Athens. Here’s 5 reasons why Georgia walks away with the win.

Georgia is set to take on South Carolina this Saturday night. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. for the SEC opener, which will be the first night game in Sanford Stadium since 2019.

The Gamecocks come to Athens in rebuilding mode. Former Georgia assistant Shane Beamer is at the helm, replacing new Georgia special teams coordinator Will Muschamp in Columbia.

South Carolina is led by graduate assistant quarterback Zeb Noland as former starter Luke Doty is recovering from an injury suffered in fall camp. The Gamecocks are coming off of a 20-17 win over East Carolina in week-two.

On the other side, Georgia is dealing with its own quarterback injury problems. Star J.T. Daniels missed last week with a core injury and Stetson Bennett, who stepped in and played great in Daniels place versus UAB, is dealing with a minor back injury.

Coach Kirby Smart was optimistic about both Daniels and Bennett’s status in his weekly press conference on Tuesday, but we probably won’t know who will lead the Bulldogs until Saturday.

Even with the offensive questions, Georgia’s defense is good enough to make up the slack.

Here’s five reasons why UGA beats the Gamecocks this weekend.

Georgia (2-0) vs South Carolina (2-0) Game Preview

Why South Carolina Will Win

Does Georgia have a quarterback?

JT Daniels missed the UAB game with an abdominal core injury, but it didn’t matter. Stetson Bennett stepped in and threw five touchdown passes in the 56-7 win, and … he now has a strained back.

Carson Beck stepped in late and only hit four of his ten passes with a touchdown and a pick.

South Carolina needed to do way too much work to get by East Carolina 20-17, but the defense did a great job against a dangerous offense that was supposed to crank it up through the air with all of its veteran talent. Instead, the Gamecocks allowed just 152 yards through the air and 116 on the ground.

The defense leads the nation in third down stops – giving up just 2 conversions in 24 chances – with a line that was supposed to be one of the big  strengths for the new coaching staff, and it is.

This has to be kept close by the defense because …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Will Win

The South Carolina offense might not go anywhere.

The Georgia quarterback situation will figure itself out – Daniels and Bennett are both just healthy enough for one of them to potentially step in and shine – but it’s the D that’s been otherworldly.

Clemson has one of the five best teams in college football, and it managed a grand total of two rushing yards and 180 in all.

UAB is probably going to win the Conference USA title with the best team yet under head coach Bill Clark, and it got absolutely nothing to work with 174 total yards in a 56-7 Dawg win.

South Carolina turned it over three times, could’t move the chains all that well, and needed a late score to push past an East Carolina team with a bad defense.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

No, really, this Georgia defense is just that good.

It’s as if this is too easy, so the Dawgs have banged up quarterbacks and missing receiving weapons just to keep it fair. South Carolina won’t be able to run, QB Zeb Noland will turn it over a few times, and the Georgia offense will capitalize on all of its chances.
