SEC Baseball Power Rankings after three weeks of non-conference play

SEC Baseball Power Rankings for the 2024 season with teams still finding their identities.

The college baseball season is underway and teams are already beginning to find their identities. When it comes to identifying the contenders in the SEC, you almost always have your usual suspects — Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, LSU, and Texas A&M.

Other programs that have started to find their identities early on in the season are Kentucky, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama.

Then, you have other programs like Missouri, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State that have each struggled to find their footing this season.

Nonetheless, the SEC is unpredictable and consistently changing. Therefore, it is way too early to pencil teams in or out of any kind of postseason play.

Roll Tide Wire provides its first SEC baseball power rankings of the 2024 season.

Georgia baseball’s next game is against Georgia Southern in SRP Park in Augusta, South Carolina, at 6:35 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 5.

Georgia baseball remains undefeated with walk-off win vs Northern Kentucky

Georgia baseball moves to 7-0 on the season thanks to a walk-off HBP

Georgia baseball is off to a perfect start in the 2024 season, moving to 7-0 with a walk-off victory at home against Northern Kentucky on Sunday. Freshman Tre Phelps was hit by a pitch three times, the third coming with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, giving the Bulldogs a 12-11 win to sweep the three-game series.

It was a career day by Phelps, who also recorded his first-career hit — a home run — to put the Bulldogs up 8-5 in the fifth. That run helped propel Georgia’s 4-run fifth inning, which included homers by Phelps, Logan Jordan and Kolby Branch.

Branch led the Georgia offense, hitting 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and two runs. Charlie Condon had an efficient day at the plate, hitting 4-for-5 with an RBI, two runs and a walk.

The Bulldogs ultimately squandered a 9-5 lead due to inconsistency on the mound. UGA’s pitching staff allowed 16 hits and four walks combined. Starter Leighton Finley gave up five hits, two of which were home runs, for four runs in three innings. Reliever Josh Roberge was pulled after 2.2 innings with eight hits and four more runs.

Despite the play on the mound, the Bulldogs held Northern Kentucky back during the late charge by the Norse. Georgia’s power at the plate was once again on full display. UGA’s 22 home runs in seven games leads the SEC.

Georgia will face tougher tests soon with matchups against Presbyterian and Michigan State before a three-game series with Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs will face their first ranked opponent when No. 18 Iowa makes a trip to Athens on March 15.

Georgia’s 10-0 win over UNC Asheville on Feb. 18 featured one of the most impressive plays over the weekend. Star Georgia Bulldogs outfielder Charlie Condon showed off his fielding range when he may an acrobatic catch over the wall on a foul ball.

Georgia pitchers Leighton Finley and Josh Roberge gave up just two total hits and had a combined eight strike outs as Georgia dominated UNC Asheville. Georgia outscored UNC Asheville 38-7 over three games.

Georgia baseball’s next game is on Feb. 20 against Georgia State in Atlanta, Georgia. The Bulldogs continue exclusive playing nonconference games through March 15.

LSU director of baseball operations to join Wes Johnson at Georgia

After serving as LSU’s director of baseball operations for a little over a year, Josh Simpson is on to his next venture.

After serving as LSU’s director of baseball operations for a little over a year, [autotag]Josh Simpson[/autotag] is on to his next venture. He will be joining former LSU pitching coach [autotag]Wes Johnson[/autotag] in Georgia as the recruiting coordinator.

Simpson came to LSU after working as a scout for the Texas Rangers in the MLB. There’s no better way to exit a program than to go out on top and that’s what the Tigers did in Simpson’s only season on the Bayou.

We will be keeping an eye on who LSU will hire as their new director of baseball operations. The Tigers recently hired Nate Yeskie to fill Wes Johnson’s position as the new pitching coach. There is no timeline on how long it will take to hire a new director of baseball operations.

I’m sure there will be no shortage of applicants trying to join a team that just won the 2023 national championship.

LSU survives extra innings against Georgia to take Game 1

LSU got a much-needed win in Game 1 and will look to clinch the series against the Bulldogs on Friday.

LSU has lost two conference series in a row and they are at risk of losing their super regional hosting rights. A good showing this weekend would prevent that, and LSU took care of business in Game 1 with an 8-5 win over Georgia, though it took 12 innings to get there.

[autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] got the party started in the top of the second inning when he hit a two-run blast over the scoreboard in right field to give LSU a 2-0 lead.

With [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] on the mound, a two-run lead is usually enough to win the game. Not this time. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Georgia tied the game with a solo homer and an RBI single to tie the game 2-2 as we headed into the sixth inning.

In the top of the eighth inning, [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] broke the tie with a solo homer and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] followed that up with a solo shot of his own to make it 4-2 LSU heading into the bottom of the inning.

[autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] took over for Skenes on the mound to start the bottom of the eighth. Skenes finished the game after pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on four hits, a walk and 12 strikeouts.

Cooper walked the first batter he faced and he was pulled for [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag]. Hurd struck out the first batter he faced, walked the next one and got out No. 2 on a fielder’s choice. Hurd got the next batter to pop up to short, but Thompson dropped the ball and a run scored to make it 4-3.

Hurd got the next hitter to pop up for out No. 3.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit his first “Crews Missile” in a while to extend the LSU lead to 5-3 as we headed to the bottom of the ninth.

The first batter in the bottom of the ninth hit a solo shot, and just like that, it was a one-run game again. Hurd would stay in the game to try and finish the job. He got the next two hitters out quickly, but with only one out remaining, Georgia hit a solo shot to tie the game 5-5. The next hitter grounded out and we headed to extra innings.

Neither team could score a run in the top of the 10th so we headed to the 11th. Jobert was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] advanced him with a sacrifice bunt. [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] came in to pinch-hit for [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], and he drew a walk to put runners on first and second with only one out.

The bases were loaded for Crews and White, but the Tigers failed to score after Crews struck out and White grounded into a fielder’s choice. Hurd retired all three Georgia hitters in short order and we headed to the 12th inning.

Travinski started the 12th inning with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] then hit a two-run homer to give the Tigers a 7-5 lead. Thompson followed that with a homer of his own to make it 8-5 as we headed to the bottom of the 12th.

Hurd retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the 12th and LSU survived Game 1 against Georgia with an 8-5 win. The Tigers will go for the series win at 5 p.m. CT on Friday.
