Notre Dame’s last game against Georgetown

Between 1996 and 2013, Notre Dame and Georgetown played each other at least once ever year as Big East rivals.

Between 1996 and 2013, Notre Dame and Georgetown played each other at least once ever year as Big East rivals. When the programs, who will play a home-and-home series the next two seasons, met Jan. 21, 2013 at Purcell Pavilion, the conference series was tied at 11. With the Irish about to move to the ACC, the game decided who had perpetual conference bragging rights. That turned out to be the Hoyas, who upset the No. 24 Irish, 63-47, en route to winning a share of the Big East title.

Future NBA journeyman Otto Porter Jr. led all scorers with 19 points and came within a rebound of a double-double. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 14 off the bench for the Hoyas. Moses Abraham, another Hoyas reserved, had 10 boards.

[autotag]Jerian Grant[/autotag] led the Irish with 13 points and had a game-high three steals. [autotag]Pat Connaughton[/autotag] scored 12, and [autotag]Jack Cooley[/autotag] achieved a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. However, the team shooting an overall 34.7% from the field proved too much to overcome. Not even Red Panda’s halftime performance could inspire the Irish enough.

As we prepare for the upcoming home-and-home, here are the images of this game Irish fans probably would rather forget:

Rutgers men’s basketball to host Georgetown in 2023 Gavitt Games

Rutgers men’s basketball will be one of eight Big Ten teams participating in the 2023 Gavitt Games. The Gavitt Games is a series of matchups involving Big East teams against Big Ten teams in honor of former Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt.

Rutgers will join Purdue, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, Michigan State, Iowa, and Wisconsin, representing the Big Ten Conference in the 2023 Gavitt Games.

According to Jon Rothstein of College Hoops Today, the Scarlet Knights will host the Georgetown Hoyas in the 2023 Gavitt Games. The announcement marks Rutgers’ fifth appearance in the Gavitt Games, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 1-3 record. Rutgers and Georgetown have met 43 times as former Big East rivals, with Georgetown holding a 28-15 series lead. The two schools haven’t squared off since 2013, over ten years ago. The last time Scarlet Knights defeated Georgetown was in 2010 when Rutgers captured a 71-68 victory.

The most famous Rutgers victory over the Hoyas was in the 1998 Big East East Tournament. Geoff Billet’s game-winning shot sent the Scarlet Knights to the semifinals for the first and only time the program was in the Big East conference.

Watch: Georgetown gets commitment from 4-star center Thomas Sorber

However, this week the Hoyas finally earned a significant victory in the recruiting department.

Historic college basketball powerhouse Georgetown has been lagging behind the competition for the last couple of seasons, winning just 13 total games and losing 50. However, this week the Hoyas finally earned a significant victory in the recruiting department.

In this video, Archbishop Ryan (Pa.) four-star center Thomas Sorber announced his commitment to Georgetown on Wednesday.

Sorber (6-foot-9, 250 pounds) had offers from eight other schools, including La Salle, Maryland, Miami, Penn State, Providence, Richmond, Syracuse and Villanova.

Going by the 247Sports composite rankings, Sorber is the No. 13 center in the class of 2024. He also ranks fifth overall in the state of Pennsylvania and No. 68 nationally.

Sorber is Georgetown’s second hard commit of the 2024 cycle. The other is Worcester Academy (Mass.) four-star shooting guard Kayvaun Mulready. Together they rank No. 8 in the country.

Oklahoma to face Providence in 2023 Big East-Big 12 Battle

Oklahoma and Providence are locked in for a December 5th date to play in Norman as part of the fifth Big 12-Big East Battle.

While the Oklahoma Sooners grapple with how they’ll retool and replenish a now-depleted roster, we know one of their non-conference opponents for the 2023 season.

The Sooners are set to take on the Providence Friars on December 5 in the 2023 Big East-Big 12 Battle. This men’s basketball non-conference scheduling alliance is in its fifth year, with the games being played from November 30 to December 5.

Both conferences have grown in members since the conception of the idea, and with the Big 12 adding Houston, BYU, UCF, and Cincinnati, the format has changed this year with an increase from 10 to 11 matchups for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. In this upcoming 2023-2024 season, the Big 12 will host six games, while the Big East will host six the following season.

The two conferences jointly determine the matchups, with the home team choosing the venue of its game. ESPN and FOX Sports will also have a voice in how the broadcast arrangements play out, considering they are the overarching media entities for the Big 12 and Big East.

Providence will be under the guidance of Kim English, previously the head coach of the George Mason Patriots.

English is a former Big 12 basketball player who was a star at Missouri (before they departed for the SEC). He helped lead the Tigers to 107 wins and four NCAA tournament appearances. He was a two-time All-Big 12 selection at Missouri, averaging 11.1 points.

The Friars have made the NCAA Tournament in seven of the last twelve seasons.

Georgetown gets commitments from a pair of 4-star recruits

Georgetown got a double recruiting bonus this week.

Georgetown got a double recruiting bonus this week, scoring commitments from a pair of four-star recruits who have followed new head coach Ed Cooley from Providence.

On Tuesday afternoon, Southern California Academy (Calif.) center Drew Fielder chose Georgetown after decommitting from Providence.

Fielder (6-foot-9, 215 pounds) is ranked No. 17 among centers in the class of 2023. He had offers from 28 other programs.

Fielder told On3 that he chose Georgetown because of his relationship with Cooley.

“I chose Georgetown because of my relationship with coach (Ed) Cooley, I really trust what he’s saying and I really believe that he believes in me. He believes we can make Georgetown really good together. They have a good history and we want to keep that going. Keep the history of elite bigs coming through. I’m really excited.”

Not an hour later, Georgetown pulled off another recruiting coup – getting Worcester (Mass.) four-star shooting guard Kayvaun Mulready to commit.

Mulready echoed the same sentiment as Fielder, crediting coach Cooley with his decision, per On3.

“Coach Cooley is an outstanding coach and person and someone who I have a lot of trust and faith in… We’ve built a great relationship from last summer and it’s been getting even stronger since. I know thats someone who I want to play for.”

Mulready (6-foot-4, 210 pounds) is ranked No. 22 among shooting guards in the class of 2024, second in the state and No. 98 overall. He had 15 other offers.

8 coaches who should replace Patrick Ewing at Georgetown, according to Twitter

Some names college hoops fans wanted to see for Georgetown’s next head coach.

Patrick Ewing is out at Georgetown, and Hoyas fans are probably the happiest.

The legendary Basketball Hall of Famer didn’t have that on-court skill translate to coaching — the Hoyas went 75-109 with him at the helm, including just seven wins this year and six in 2021-22. Yikes. It was time for a change.

So who could be next? Of course college hoops Twitter was all over the news, speculating on who should be hired next by the program. We put together a few of the candidates floating by fans, starting with the one name I saw repeated a lot.

Here we go:

Alabama MBB lands Top-100 prospect, Sam Walters

Nate Oats and Alabama start off the 2023 recruiting class with a bang!

[autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide have landed their first commitment in the 2023 class with Top-100 prospect [autotag]Sam Walters.[/autotag]

Walters is a massive commitment for the Tide as he brings a much needed combination of size and maneuverability to Tuscaloosa. A 6’8 power forward coming in at 180 lbs, Oats and company will look to add on some size and strength, while maintaining the versatility of his game. Walters is from Villages Charter School in Florida and had offers from the likes of Georgetown, LSU, Wisconsin, and many other big time programs.

The Tide have had a lot of success with power forwards recently like Herb Jones and they are optimistic that Walters will have the same impact. While they are different players, having an elite defender and rebounder while still being able to get a bucket is a big time grab for Alabama.

When asked about his style of play, Walters said, “I’m very versatile, can handle, shoot, pass, rebound… I just try to do everything, block shots, rebound; just things to help us win.”

This is a massive win for Oats on the recruiting trail, and hopefully just a kickstarter for the rest of the class!

Notre Dame offers four-star Massachusetts forward T.J. Power

The Irish could use this kid.

If the next season began today, Notre Dame would have a whole lot of guards but not many forwards. Heck, it was like that this past season. However, could a power forward from Massachusetts help rectify that problem in a couple of years? Say hello to T.J. Power, a 2023 recruit who has received an offer from the Irish:

Power attends Worcester Academy and lights it up for that school, but he also plays for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club, of which Bonzie Colson is an alumnus. He’s done pretty well for that team lately, too:

And he’s catching the attention of at least one recruiting analyst:

So far, the Irish will have to battle with the following ACC rivals for Power’s services: Miami, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. Others in contention include Iowa, Penn State, Oklahoma, Marquette and Georgetown. A decision likely won’t come for a while, but let’s hope for the best.
