PHOTOS: LSU gets revenge against Wake Forest, forces decisive College World Series semifinal game

LSU once again came through with its back against the wall against the top team in the country on Wednesday night.

Not many gave the Tigers much of a chance in a must-win game against Wake Forest on Wednesday night, but LSU proved the doubters wrong by knocking off the top team in the country 5-2 to force a winner-take-all game for a spot in the College World Series final against Florida.

Despite a rough start from [autotag]Javen Coleman[/autotag], who allowed two early runs with four walks and lasted just 1.1 innings, it was a breakout performance from Griffin Herring.

Herring would toss 4.2 shutout innings before [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] and [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] finished things off. A three-run homer from [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] in the third proved to make the difference.

Now, LSU will face Wake Forest again in what we expect to be a matchup between aces in [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and Rhett Lowder.

While we await what should be a thrilling game on Thursday night, here were the pictures from LSU’s big-time win.

LSU takes down Wake Forest to force winner-take-all game for spot in CWS finals

LSU will face Wake Forest on Thursday night for the right to take on Florida in the national championship series.

[autotag]Javen Coleman[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers as LSU faced elimination once again. This time it was against the team that put them in the losers’ bracket, Wake Forest.

Though the Tigers found themselves in an early hole, the bullpen came through once again as LSU won 5-2 to force a winner-take-all game on Thursday night against Wake for a spot in the College World Series finals.

The Demon Deacons loaded the bases in the second to chase Coleman from the mound and bring in [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag]. Wake Forest hit a two-RBI single against Money before he got the next hitter to ground into a fielder’s choice. [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] then entered out of the bullpen to get the Tigers out of the inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, LSU cut the lead in half when [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] hit an RBI double down the right-field line to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the third, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2. [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] followed that up with a three-run belly bomb to right field to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead after three innings of play.

Herring’s day was done in the top of the seventh inning after two runners reached base. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed zero runs on three hits, six strikeouts, and a walk. [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] entered the game after him and shut the Demon Deacons down with two straight strikeouts to save the lead.

After Wake Forest put two runners on base in the top of the eighth inning, [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] replaced Guidry with two outs. Cooper got his first hitter to lineout to third base to end the inning and maintain the 5-2 lead.

Cooper walked the first batter he faced before getting the next three out to win the game 5-2. LSU will play Wake Forest on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

The winner gets to play against the Florida Gators for a national championship.

Why Jay Johnson trusted Riley Cooper to finish elimination game against Tennessee on the mound

Cooper was fantastic in relief of Nate Ackenhausen, tossing three shutout innings to finish the game.

While a lot of the talk surrounding LSU’s 5-0 elimination game win over Tennessee in the College World Series on Tuesday night — rightfully — centers around the performance of starter [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag], [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] deserves just as much credit.

Coming in as a reliever to finish up the game, Cooper was the only bullpen arm the Tigers had to use on Tuesday. He was fantastic, throwing three innings while allowing only a pair of hits and no runs.

LSU had other options with [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] both getting warm in the bullpen, but coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said he ultimately went to (and stuck with) Cooper because he felt Cooper was the most similar to Ackenhausen, who had been dominating.

“Blake had been throwing the ball really, really well,” Johnson said, per On3. “He was definitely part of the plan tonight. I didn’t think they were seeing Nate well, and I think Riley is about as comparable and close to Nate as possible and I wanted to stay with that look because they were in between.

“And, you know, when you’re pressing a little bit, when you’re in an elimination game, and you’re trying to chase runs late, he’s the type of pitcher that if you give him an inch he can take a mile, and he did what he did tonight.”

Tuesday night’s game went about as well as possible for the Tigers, who preserved most of their arms heading into Wednesday’s rematch against Wake Forest. If they can win that game, they may be able to get Paul Skenes back for a decisive if-necessary game on Thursday.

LSU withstands Tennessee rally in CWS opener, will face No. 1 Wake Forest on Monday in winners’ bracket

LSU advances in the winners’ bracket to play Wake Forest on Monday!

LSU’s first game of the College World Series was an SEC matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers as the Tigers looked to advance to the winners’ bracket to face Wake Forest.

A late rally from the Vols made things interesting, but LSU managed to hold on for a 6-3 win to set up a matchup against the Demon Deacons on Monday.

[autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer to give LSU a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, LSU extended their lead to 2-0 after [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit an RBI groundout to the pitcher. In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU tacked on two more runs thanks to a [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] RBI triple and an RBI single by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Morgan hit a sacrifice fly to score [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] to extend the lead to 5-0 Tigers. In the top of the eighth, the Vols struck back.

Tennessee scored three runs as an RBI single chased [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] from the game and [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] was greeted with a 2-run homer to cut the lead to 5-3 heading into the ninth inning.

Skenes’ day was finished after he pitched 7.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits, 12 strikeouts, and a walk. [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] replaced Guidry to get the final out of the inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, Jobert got his third hit of the day as he tacked on another run via a solo homer to right field to make it 6-3.

Cooper stayed in to pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning. He sat down three of the four hitters he faced and the Tigers won 6-3.

LSU advances in the winners’ bracket to play Wake Forest on Monday night at 6 p.m. CT.

Omaha Bound: LSU sweeps Kentucky to advance to College World Series

The Tigers are heading to the CWS for the 19th time after a super regional sweep over the Wildcats.

The LSU Tigers are heading to the College World Series.

Coach Jay Johnson’s team beat Kentucky 8-3 in Game 2 of the Baton Rouge Super Regional on Sunday night to secure a series sweep and a spot in Omaha.

With a trip to the CWS on the line, it was up to [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] to try and pull the Tigers through.

Kentucky drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot to give them a 1-0 lead before LSU tied it in the top of the second on an RBI fielder’s choice by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag].

[autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] made one of the best plays all season in the bottom of the second inning when he made an incredible throw for out No. 2 in the inning.

In the top of the third, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] gave the Tigers their first lead of the game via a three-run homer to make the score 4-1. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] followed that with an RBI single of his own to increase the lead to 5-1.

Kentucky chased Floyd from the mound in the bottom of the fourth inning after hitting two solo homers to cut the lead to 5-3. [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] was called on out of the bullpen to try and shut the Wildcats down. Cooper pitched two innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, two strikeouts, and a walk.

[autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as he looked to go the rest of the way for the Tigers. In the top of the ninth inning, LSU got some more breathing room after [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch and Crews hit a two-RBI double to extend the lead to 8-3.

Gavin Guidry stayed in the game and closed out the 8-3 victory, and now LSU will await either Tennessee or Southern Mississippi for its first game in Omaha.

PHOTOS: LSU baseball defeats Oregon State in Baton Rouge Regional final to advance to supers

The Tigers had a perfect 3-0 record this weekend in the Baton Rouge Regional.

LSU capped off a perfect 3-0 weekend at Alex Box Stadium with a 13-7 win over Oregon State on Monday.

That was the second win over the Beavers in as many days, and it allowed the Tigers to capture a regional title and advance to the super regionals for the 16th time in program history (and the first time since 2021).

All three of LSU’s usual starters were unavailable, and coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] turned to the bullpen to secure the win. [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] got the nod with [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag], [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] coming in to finish things off.

LSU’s offense was the real star of the show. The Tigers had 19 hits as a team with four different players — [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag], [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] — hitting home runs.

Now, LSU will await the winner of the Lexington Regional final between No. 12 national seed Kentucky and Indiana. That series will be played in Baton Rouge again.

In the meantime, here were the best photos as LSU closed out the regional final against the Beavers.

LSU takes down Oregon State to advance to Baton Rouge Regional final

LSU punched its ticket to the regional final with a 6-5 win over the Beavers after a weather delay.

[autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] got the start on the mound as the LSU Tigers looked to punch their ticket into a regional final. To punch that ticket, they would need to beat a really good Oregon State team.

After a lengthy weather delay, the Tigers ultimately got the job done. They won 6-5 and will advance to the regional final on Sunday.

Oregon State hit a solo shot to draw first blood in the top of the third inning to give them a 1-0 lead. Then the rain came, and the game was delayed.

After the delay, [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] took over on the mound and the Beavers greeted him by scoring two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. LSU got both of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, though, when [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit a two-run Crews missile to cut the lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] and [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] hit back-to-back homers to give LSU their first lead of the ballgame as the Tigers led 4-3 after five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU got an insurance run when [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit a solo shot to increase the lead to 5-3.

In the top of the seventh, the Beavers tied the game on a two-run homer against Hurd to knot the game up 5-5 as we headed to the eighth. In the eighth inning, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] hit a solo shot to give LSU the lead once again. LSU loaded the bases but couldn’t score any more runs and we headed to the ninth inning with the Tigers holding on to a 6-5 lead.

[autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] entered to pitch the ninth inning as he tried to earn a save. He struck out the first batter he faced before the second batter hit a single. The third batter grounded into a fielder’s choice for out No. 2.

Guidry struck out the final batter as LSU punched their ticket to the regional final.

LSU will likely play the regional championship game on Sunday against either Oregon State or Sam Houston State, unless we have more weather delays.

Ty Floyd leads LSU to series win over Georgia in Game 2

After surviving a late-inning war against the Dawgs last night, LSU needed Ty Floyd to have a quality start. He did just that.

After surviving a late-inning war against the ‘Dawgs on Thursday night, LSU needed [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] to have a quality start. He did just that as the Tigers only had to use two pitchers to beat Georgia 8-4 in Game 2 and take the series.

UGA got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homer to right field off of Floyd to make it 2-0 Bulldogs after one inning.

The Tigers came roaring back in the top of the fourth inning as LSU took their first lead of the game after a [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] walk with bases loaded, an RBI single by [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], and a sacrifice fly by [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] to make it 3-2 Tigers.

LSU tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Thompson and a two-RBI single by Pearson to make it 6-2 LSU after five innings.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Tigers extended their lead to 8-2 after White and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] both hit solo shots.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Georgia cut LSU’s lead to 8-4 after the Bulldogs hit a two-run homer off of Floyd. He stayed in the game and retired the next two batters to get the Tigers out of the inning. [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] entered the game to pitch for Floyd in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Floyd finished the day with seven innings pitched and he gave up four runs on five hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts. His only real mistakes were two two-run homers. I will take that kind of start from him every time.

The first batter that Cooper faced hit a single and he was pulled for [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag]. Guidry struck out two guys and got another to fly out to end the inning. Guidry stayed in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning for the Tigers. He got the Georgia hitters out in short order and the Tigers won 8-4.

LSU wins their first SEC series in three weeks and will go for the sweep on Saturday at noon CT.

LSU baseball gets back in the win column against McNeese

LSU rebounded after a series loss to Mississippi State on Tuesday night.

LSU was looking to rebound after losing a series to Mississippi State last weekend while McNeese wanted to keep the Tigers’ losing streak going. Ultimately, coach Jay Johnson’s team prevailed to get back in the win column with a 7-4 win.

LSU scored three runs in the first two innings as [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit an RBI double, a run scored on a wild pitch, and [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] hit an RBI groundout to make it 3-0 LSU after two innings.

In the top of the third, the Cowboys roped their way back into the game with three runs of their own to tie the game. In the top of the sixth, McNeese took its first lead of the ballgame when a run scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 4-3 Cowboys headed to the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers took the lead back with back-to-back solo homers from [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] to make it 5-4 LSU.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Milazzo scored on a single from [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and White hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4 LSU after eight innings.

[autotag]Sam Dutton[/autotag] stayed in the game to pitch the ninth inning to try to close out the win. The first two hitters in the inning reached on back-to-back singles so [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] came in. He retired the first two batters he faced before walking the third guy to load the bases.

[autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] was then called on to close it out. Hurd got the first hitter to ground out and the Tigers won 7-4.

LSU’s final series of the regular season starts on Thursday as the Tigers travel to Athens to play the Georgia Bulldogs. The first pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.

LSU drops back-to-back SEC series with Sunday’s Game 3 collapse against Mississippi State

The Tigers led 13-4 in the sixth, but a Bulldogs rally erased that lead as LSU lost another conference series.

After blowing a lead late in Game 2, LSU looked to rebound and take the series against Mississippi State in Game 3. Instead, the Tigers saw a similar result as they squandered a 13-4 lead in the sixth inning to fall to the Bulldogs 14-13 in extras.

[autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] got the game started off right as he hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to give LSU a 3-0 lead.

Mississippi State got one of those runs back in the top of the third inning as the Bulldogs hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. LSU got that run back plus one more in the bottom of the inning as [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit a solo homer and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit an RBI double to give LSU a 5-1 lead after three innings.

Things started to unravel in the top of the fourth, though, as the Bulldogs scored three runs against [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] to cut the lead to 5-4. Once again, the Tigers answered. It all started with an error to score [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag]. After that, things went downhill fast for Mississippi State. [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit an RBI single, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice but got an RBI, and Jobert hit a two-RBI single to make it 10-4 LSU.

Mississippi State loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning against [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] but [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] came in and got the Tigers out of the jam without allowing any runs. After a Gavin Dugas double to start the bottom of the fifth, Morgan hit a two-run homer to increase the Tiger lead to 12-4. Hayden Travinski followed that with an RBI single to make it 13-4.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs clawed their way back into the game as an RBI single and a three-run homer cut the lead to 13-8. In the top of the seventh inning, the Tiger lead came crashing down as Mississippi State scored five runs against three different pitchers to tie the game at 13.

What once looked as if it would be another run-rule victory had now become a tie game.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Bulldogs loaded the bases before [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] got LSU out of the threat unscathed. In the bottom of the ninth inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] drew a walk to put the winning run on first base. [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] came into run for Pearson.

Kling advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and he advanced to third on a flyout by Morgan. Crews and White were intentionally walked to load the bases as [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] stepped into the box. He fouled out, and we headed to extras.

In the top of the 10th, the Bulldogs took the lead on a fielder’s choice to give them a 14-13 lead. Jones, Jobert, and Thompson were LSU’s final hope. Jones struck out swinging for out No. 1. Jobert walked to put the winning run at first. Thompson hit a fly ball into a double play and the game ended in a 14-13 Mississippi State victory.

With the loss, LSU drops to 39-12 and 17-9 in conference play. LSU has now lost two straight conference series. The next game will be on Tuesday against McNeese.
