How have Alabama basketball transfers performed at their new schools during 2023-2024 season?

The Alabama men’s basketball team has seen several of its players transfer from the program. Roll Tide Wire takes a closer look at how each of the transfers are performing at their respective schools.

The Alabama men’s basketball program has seen its share of players enter and exit via the transfer portal. Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats has had to fill some holes on the roster in recent years. More specifically, he was tasked with finding replacements for some of the top players on the roster the past two seasons.

Last offseason, the Crimson Tide lost all but two scholarship players. Meaning that the players on the roster either declared for the NBA draft or transferred elsewhere.

Today, Roll Tide Wire takes a look at how some of the Alabama transfers have performed at their new schools during the 2023-2024 season.

Michigan basketball officially adds a former Texas Tech/Alabama transfer

Michigan adds some versatility to the roster!

Michigan added the former Texas Tech and Alabama transfer Nimari Burnett in the transfer portal months back, but the Wolverines officially announced it on Thursday.

Burnett is a Chicago native and a former five-star recruit — who was a McDonald’s All-American. Burnett signed with Texas Tech coming out of high school, but eventually found his way to Alabama. He started nine games last year for the great Alabama basketball squad. Burnett averaged 5.6 points and two rebounds per game last season.

Burnett has the ability to play the ‘2’, ‘3’, or even ‘4’ if Michigan wants to play small.

You can read the entire press release below via MGoBlue:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — David and Meredith Kaplan U-M Basketball Head Coach Juwan Howard announced today (Friday, June 9) the addition of Chicago native and 6-4 guard Nimari Burnett as a graduate transfer for the 2023-24 season. Burnett becomes the third graduate transfer to join the Wolverines following the early addition of 6-9 forward Olivier Nkamhoua (Tennessee) and 6-10 forward Tray Jackson (Seton Hall).

“I have watched and gotten to know Nimari for several years,” said Howard. “He has that ‘feel’ for the game that is just unique. This is why he has continued to excel on both ends of the floor. We also love his length, toughness and passion for the game. Nimari’s work ethic and leadership is off the charts. We can’t wait for him to get here.”

“I’m very excited to become a part of the Michigan program,” said Burnett. “This is a great opportunity for me to learn from someone of Juwan’s caliber as well as from some of the best basketball minds in the country. I have heard so much about the Maize and Blue faithful and I am really looking forward to interacting with them, the Maize Rage and all the students on campus. If all goes well we could all have a special year.”

A Chicago native, Burnett spent his final three prep years at Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.) where he was a Class of 2020 consensus top-40 player and five-star recruit. He was selected for the McDonald’s All-American game and the Jordan Brand Classic before both all-star games were canceled due to COVID-19.

Beginning his collegiate career at Texas Tech, Burnett played 12 games off the bench before leaving the Raider program in January. He averaged 5.3 points and scored a season-best 12 points — going 7-for-7 on free throws — against Grambling (Dec. 6, 2020), while adding 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals.

Eventually transferring to Alabama, Burnett missed the entire 2021-22 season after electing to have surgery on his right knee. Making his return in 2022-23, he played in 27 games with nine starts for the Crimson Tide, who went on to record a 31-6 record and win the SEC regular-season and tournament titles. Earning the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament, Alabama fell to eventual national runner-up San Diego State in the Sweet 16.

Highlighted by five double-figure scoring games, Burnett posted a career-best 18 points against Jacksonville State (Nov. 18, 2022). He went on to average 5.6 points per game, adding 2.0 rebounds in 14.7 minutes per game.

In addition to his collegiate play, Burnett helped USA Basketball win a historic first-ever gold medal at the 2019 FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup, along with teammates Devin Askew (Cal), Dawson Garcia (UNC/Minnesota) and Ryan Morton (Purdue). He helped the USA to a perfect 7-0 record, scoring 40 points, which ranked second on Team USA and fifth among all competitors. A member of Team Attack, Burnett helped earn a qualifying spot after earning a gold medal (8-0) at the 2019 USA 3×3 U18 National Championship with Askew, Garcia and Morton.

With the additions of Burnett, Nkamhoua and Jackson, U-M has added seven graduate transfers over the last four seasons — guard Mike Smith (Columbia; 2020-21), guard DeVante’ Jones (Coastal Carolina; 2021-22), guard Joey Baker (Duke; 2022-23) and guard Jaelin Llewellyn (Princeton; 2022-23). Former Wolverine guard Jaaron Simmons (Ohio) was U-M’s first ever grad-transfer in 2017-18 and currently serves as the Wolverines’ video analyst.

BREAKING: Alabama wing Nimari Burnett transferring to Michigan

Alabama wing transfer Nimari Burnett has announced that he will be transferring to Michigan. The news comes just days after Burnett entered the transfer portal.

Alabama wing transfer Nimari Burnett is transferring to Michigan, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. The Illinois native played in one season with the Crimson Tide.

The news is somewhat surprising considering the fact that Burnett entered the transfer portal just two days ago. However, the landscape of college basketball is constantly changing and Burnett will be on his way to Ann Arbor.

Burnett was a key player off of Alabama’s bench this past season. He suffered an injury early on in the season but was able to make positive contributions during conference play.

Altogether, Burnett averaged 5.6 points per game while shooting 36.8% from the field.

The thing that Alabama will likely miss the most about Burnett is his defensive presence. He created a lot of mismatches on that end of the floor given his sheer size and length.

Alabama is bringing in two wings for next season in Davin Cosby and Kris Parker. That should definitely help Alabama’s backcourt heading into next season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama basketball program.

Michigan basketball gets high-profile commitment from transfer

It took awhile, but #Michigan finally got him! #GoBlue

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. And again.

Such is the case for Michigan basketball who lost out on a prized recruit in the 2020 cycle, the first full cycle where Juwan Howard was the head coach. Chicago (Ill.) Prolific Prep four-star combo guard Nimari Burnett was long looked at as a Wolverines lean, yet he opted for Texas Tech, which was coming off of an incredible season in its own right. He later transferred to Alabama, but entered the NCAA transfer portal.

This time around, Howard got his man, as the former No. 34 player in the country announced he will be finishing his career in Ann Arbor.

Burnett’s commitment certainly softens the blow on shooting guard Kobe Bufkin’s expected departure for the NBA draft.

Alabama guard Nimari Burnett enters transfer portal

Nimari Burnett has hit the transfer portal for the second time in his career.

Alabama redshirt sophomore guard Nimari Burnett has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

This will be Burnett’s second trip into the portal. Burnett originally signed with Texas Tech in the 2020 recruiting cycle before transferring to Alabama after one season with the Red Raiders.

Burnett began the 2022 season in the starting lineup for the Tide before suffering an injury that sidelined him for a few weeks and then he would return as a key bench player for the remainder of the season.

During the 2022-23 season, Burnett averaged 5.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

Unless Burnett graduates this spring or summer, he would have to sit out a year due to NCAA guidelines for two-time transfers.

Everything Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats said following the Tide’s 79-69 win over LSU.

No. 4 Alabama took care of business on Saturday with a 79-69 road win over the LSU Tigers.

Even though the Tigers are one of the bottom feeders in the SEC, anytime you can grab a road win in conference play, you have to take time to enjoy it. Especially when you are chasing a conference championship like the Crimson Tide.

With the win, Alabama is now 20-3 on the season and a perfect 10-0 in SEC play. LSU drops to 12-11 overall and a pitiful 1-9 in conference competition.

Following the win, Alabama head coach [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] would address the media and discuss his team’s performance.

Alabama performed pretty well on the offensive end of the floor for the majority of the contest, but defensively the Tide could never seem to get into a flow.

LSU shot a total of 31 free throws in the contest compared to Alabama’s 15 and that is what kept the Tigers in the game late.

Nimari Burnett and Rylan Griffen continue to come up big for Alabama off of the bench combining for 27 points and an impressive 7-12 from the three-point line.

Here are Alabama’s stat leaders from the road win over the LSU Tigers.

Alabama’s 57-point win is the largest margin of victory over an SEC team in program history and the Tide are now a perfect 10-0 in the SEC this season.

Alabama’s offense was definitely alive on Tuesday night, but the game was decided on the defensive end of the floor for the Tide as they held Vanderbilt to just 44 points on 25% shooting.

Alabama shooting guard Nimari Burnett out indefinitely after wrist surgery

Alabama redshirt-sophomore Nimari Burnett will miss 6-8 weeks with a broken wrist. Head coach Nate Oats confirmed the news following the Tide’s win over Memphis on Tuesday night.

Alabama shooting guard Nimari Burnett is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a broken wrist. Burnett underwent surgery on Tuesday for the injury. Alabama head coach Nate Oats confirmed the news in his postgame press conference.

Burnett had started in every game for the Tide this season. He was a crucial player on the defensive end of the floor and brought some veteran leadership to a young Alabama squad.

In nine games, Burnett averaged 7.9 points per game while playing 18.8 minutes per game. His best performance of the season came against Jacksonville State when he scored 18 points while shooting 83.3% from the field.

Several players that will likely step up in his absence are guards Jaden Bradley, Rylan Griffen, and Darius Miles. Burnett could return at some point in the season, but it is unclear when that will be at this time.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama men’s basketball program.
