Cowboys vs Eagles Inactives, Captaing: No Lane Johnson, Sean Lee back

The inactives and captains for Week 8’s Sunday Night Football game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles

The Dallas Cowboys injury situation has been catastrophic in 2020. Still, they did receive a fair bit of positive news on that front this week with the return of linebacker Sean Lee who was activated from injured reserve and Zack Martin who practiced all week after recovering from a concussion that kept him out of last Sunday’s game.

The two veterans, something Dallas has sorely needed in 2020, are active and ready to go against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. There are no surprise inactives for the matchup tonight as there’s not many tough choices that need to be made. However, rookie defensive end Bradlee Anae returns to active duty after the team traded Everson Griffen earlier in the week.

The team’s rotating cast of captains honors goes to linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, running back and kick return Tony Pollard and kicker Greg Zuerlein.

The Eagles are missing some key pieces offensively, missing right tackle Lane Johnson who was ruled out earlier in the day with an ankle injury. They’re also without running back Miles Sanders and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.

It hasn’t mattered who has lined up at running back for opponents of the Dallas defense to date, but Boston Scott will assume the lion’s share of those duties. First-round draft pick wide receiver Jalen Reagor will be active for the first time since Week 2 after having surgery to repair a torn UCL in his right thumb.

Cowboys sign QB Garrett Gilbert off the Browns practice squad

The Browns have been protecting Gilbert but the Cowboys pounced before the protection window opened in Week 6

Garrett Gilbert is headed back home to Texas. Cleveland’s No. 3 quarterback is being signed off the Browns practice squad by the Dallas Cowboys, per numerous sources on Monday night.

It’s the second week in a row the Cowboys have poached the Browns’ practice squad. Last week they plucked offensive tackle Greg Senat, who had been on the protected list all year. Senat did play special teams on Sunday for the Cowboys.

Dallas is taking advantage of the window between the end of the game on Sunday and the start of the protection window, which is Tuesday for teams that play on Sunday. Teams can protect up to four practice squad players per week, but they are capable of being signed away in that timeframe.

Gilbert had been on the Browns’ protected list every week. He saw limited action for the Browns in 2019, throwing three total passes in five games. He stuck around on the practice squad after the Browns signed veteran Case Keenum to be Baker Mayfield’s backup.

Gilbert played collegiately at SMU after transferring from Texas. He attended the same high school, Lake Travis in Austin, as Mayfield.

The Cowboys have a need for QB depth with Dak Prescott out for the season with his gruesome ankle injury. Gilbert will back up new starter Andy Dalton.

The Browns now have an opening on the practice squad. With just Mayfield and Keenum at QB on the roster, the team should be in the market for a No. 3.

Dallas Cowboys sign Garrett Gilbert from Cleveland Browns practice squad

According to Tom Pelissero, former Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert has been signed by the Dallas Cowboys off Cleveland’s practice squad.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, former Texas Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert has been signed by the Dallas Cowboys off the Cleveland Browns‘ practice squad. This move comes after Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Sunday’s matchup against the New York Giants.

Gilbert will serve as Dallas’ third-string quarterback once the move is completed. Former TCU star Andy Dalton will take over as the Cowboys’ starter while rookie Ben DiNucci will serve as the backup.

After transferring to SMU in 2012, Glibert was a sixth-round pick of the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft. Gilbert has played for six NFL teams and was a player in the brief Alliance of American Football for the Orlando Apollos.

Gilbert is the AAF’s all-time leader in passing yards and has the highest passer rating in league history. More impressively, the veteran quarterback was a Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots in 2015.

Browns continue practice squad protection for Garrett Gilbert, Greg Senat

Gilbert and OT Greg Senat have been protected all three weeks

For the third week in a row, Garrett Gilbert has been one of the four protected practice squad players for the Cleveland Browns. Protecting the third-string QB from getting signed away by another team remains a priority for coach Kevin Stefanski and his Browns staff.

Gilbert has been on the 4-man protected list all three weeks. So has offensive tackle Greg Senat, who was signed just before Week 1.

This week they are joined by new practice squad kicker Matthew McCrane and running back Dontrell Hilliard. McCrane was just signed to the Browns’ practice squad on Tuesday and was almost immediately placed on the protected list. Cody Parkey was protected prior to Week 1 before usurping the starting PK role from ineffective Austin Seibert for Week 2.

Browns reveal their protected practice squad players for Week 1

Garrett Gilbert and newcomer Greg Senat are among the first Browns on the protected practice squad

A new rule change for 2020 allows NFL teams to protect up to four players on the practice squad each week. While players are exposed during the aftermath of a game week, once they get back to the practice squad the next week the players can be locked in. No team can sign the protected players until after that week’s game.

The Cleveland Browns used the protected designation for Week 1 on four players:

  • QB Garrett Gilbert
  • S Jovante Moffatt
  • PK Cody Parkey
  • OT Greg Senat

Senat was signed just before the Browns had to determine the protected members of the practice squad, an indication they value his addition more than fans might expect.

The Browns will also be able to make two practice squad players active on Sunday in Baltimore as a result of another rule change. One of those extra two actives must be an offensive lineman. Based on protecting him, that could very well be Senat.

Former Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert waived by the Browns

Former Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert has bounced around the NFL since 2014. The Cleveland Browns waived him during roster cutdowns.

When Garrett Gilbert arrived in Austin, there was a lot expected of him. He was supposed to be the heir to Colt McCoy following the 2009 college football season. A highly touted passer out of Austin at Lake Travis. Gilbert was a five-star recruit and the No. 2 ranked pro style quarterback in the country. It never really became what many expected.

Gilbert showed promise after a rocky start relieving McCoy in the BCS National Championship game. However, the following season didn’t go into his favor. Gilbert eventually would transfer to SMU before heading to the NFL. Since the 2014 NFL Draft where he was drafted in the sixth round by the then St Louis Rams, Gilbert has bounced around.

He made stops in St Louis, New England, Detroit, Oakland and Carolina. His latest gig came in Cleveland. On the cut down to the 53-man roster, the Browns waived Gilbert in hopes he could join their practice squad.

The former USA TODAY High School All-American has thrown just six passes in his NFL career. Before the AAF folded, Gilbert was the passing leader and passing rating leader for the Orlando Apollos. Gilbert will likely be placed on the Browns practice squad, just in case his services will be needed in Cleveland.

Updated Browns 53-man roster prediction after opt-outs

Updated Browns 53-man roster prediction after opt-outs and additions

The projections for the Cleveland Browns 53-man roster were blown out of the water before the players even got on the field. Two players who were definitely making the final 53-man roster, OG Drew Forbes and DT Andrew Billings, opted out.

Three other Browns also opted out, though only guard Colby Gossett was a serious contender to make the final roster. The shifting on the offensive line changes the projection calculus.

Here’s where we’re at now with the 53-man projection…

QB – 3

Big change here. Garrett Gilbert now makes the final spot after being omitted earlier.

RB – 4

Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, D’Ernest Johnson, Dontrell Hilliard. No change.

FB – 1

Andy Janovich. No change.

TE – 4

Austin Hooper, David Njoku, Harrison Bryant, Stephen Carlson. No change.

WR – 5

Odell Beckham Jr. Jarvis Landry, KhaDarel Hodge, Rashard Higgins, Donovan Peoples-Jones. Dropped one here to make room for the extra QB. Sorry, Damion Ratley.

OL – 9

We know the starting five will be (L-R) Jedrick Wills, Joel Bitonio, JC Tretter, Wyatt Teller, Jack Conklin. Chris Hubbard, Nick Harris and Kendall Lamm are the current reserves. I don’t think the ninth lineman is currently in Cleveland, with apologies to Evan Brown and Willie Wright. They’ll both make the practice squad and the liberal new rules on call-ups.

DL – 9

Starters (L-R) are Myles Garrett, Larry Ogunjobi, Sheldon Richardson, Olivier Vernon. Adrian Clayborn is a lock at DE, as is rookie DT Jordan Elliott. I think Chad Thomas will get every chance to prove he belongs with a new regime. I’ll add in Porter Gustin and Daniel Ekuale, though it wouldn’t surprise me if the ninth guy here is a nose tackle not currently on the roster.

LB – 5

No changes here. B.J. Goodson, Mack Wilson, Sione Takitaki, Jacob Phillips, Willie Harvey. That fifth spot is vulnerable to an outsider.

CB – 6

Swap in newcomer M.J. Stewart at the expense of UDFA A.J. Green, who will stick on the practice squad. Stewart joins Denzel Ward, Greedy Williams, Kevin Johnson, Terrance Mitchell and Tavierre Thomas, who is the Browns’ best special teams player.

S – 4

No change. Grant Delpit, Andrew Sendejo, Karl Joseph, Sheldrick Redwine. There could be a fifth here in J.T. Hassell, who can also double at OLB.

Specialist – 3

Not even a competition this year for PK Austin Seibert or P Jamie Gillan, with LS Charley Hughlett back for more as well.

Garrett Gilbert activated from reserve/COVID-19 list after just 2 days

Gilbert likely had a false positive test on Monday

The Browns activated reserve quarterback Garrett Gilbert from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday. The move comes less than two full days after Gilbert initially went on the list, and the likely culprit is a false positive test.

Gilbert had passed at least five tests with the Browns since arriving in Berea in late July, but his test on Monday came back positive for the coronavirus. He was asymptomatic and tested negative again on Tuesday and Wednesday, which allowed him to emerge from the reserve list.

Gilbert is in his second season in Cleveland after being signed from the defunct AAF. The 29-year-old is fighting with undrafted rookie Kevin Davidson for the No. 3 QB job behind Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum.

Jamie Gillan activated, Garrett Gilbert goes on Browns’ COVID-19 reserve list

Punter Jamie Gillan is activated while QB Garrett Gilbert is placed on Browns’ COVID-19 reserve list

The Scottish Hammer is back on the active roster.

In a series of roster moves on Monday, the Cleveland Browns activated punter Jamie Gillan from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Gillan went on the list on Saturday but quickly came off. The popular second-year punter admitted he had previously tested positive earlier in July and did suffer symptoms at that time, but tested negative twice last week before testing positive again.

It’s a complicated situation regarding the testing status. The best explanation comes from NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero, the man who Gillan told about his earlier positive test. From Pelissero’s twitter on Monday morning,

As Gillan comes back onto the active roster, the Browns placed reserve QB Garrett Gilbert on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The team also waived Brian Herrien, an undrafted rookie running back from Georgia.

Who did ESPN name as the most hyped recruit for Texas?

ESPN recently released a list of the most hyped recruit for each of the projected top 25 teams. So which Longhorn was selected?

Much like the NFL Draft, college football recruiting can be a total crapshoot. In the NFL Draft, a top selection in the draft can totally fail. When it comes to recruiting, a five-star prospect doesn’t always mean success. Just look at Jonathan Gray who was the fifth-highest rated recruit in UT history according to 247Sports. He never lived up to the hype of being the next great running back to come out of Austin.

ESPN put together their most hyped prospect for the Texas Longhorns recently. With so many choices, they went a different route and chose a quarterback. According to Tom VanHaaren, that player was former Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert.

Gilbert came out of Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, which has produced a lot of great quarterbacks. He was the No. 11 recruit overall in the 2009 class and the No. 2 quarterback.

He threw an incredible 138 touchdowns in high school with 12,540 passing yards. That success didn’t translate over to Texas, though, as he went 5-7 as the starter in his second season, throwing 10 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He eventually transferred to SMU.

Gilbert threw for 3,528 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior at SMU, finishing his career on a high note before moving on to the NFL.

After coming into the BCS National Championship game against Alabama as a freshman, many thought he would lead the Longhorns into the next decade. After a disappointing season in 2010, Gilbert would transfer to SMU in 2011. In an interview with Judy Battista of NFL.com, the former Longhorn detailed one reason why he left the Longhorns.

Hearing boos again, not really being able to shake that, at that point I kind of knew it might be time to start over and wipe the slate clean. It’s tough to sum up quickly. For whatever reason, things didn’t work out. I think that led to some forcing the ball, trying to force things to happen. Maybe I read the papers a little too much, as well. – Gilbert to Battista
