Another tough road loss for LSU as they fall 77-75 to South Carolina

LSU falls short to South Carolina on the road.

Just when it looked like things were getting better, they took a turn. It was a bad day for LSU in Columbia, South Carolina.

LSU got out in front in the first half thanks to Darius Days and Tari Eason leading the scoring charge.

In the first half, Days and Eason combined for 24 points and eight rebounds. Most of Days’ points in the half came from behind the arch, where he was three of five.

There was a worrisome moment in the first half where Xavier Pinson lost his footing and was slow to get up with a knee injury. Pinson’s absence earlier in the season showed he’s a critical element of this team. The team received positive news as Pinson shortly returned to the game.

South Carolina was able to go on a run to close out the half thanks to an offensive explosion from Jermaine Cousinard, who went into the locker room with 18 points.

South Carolina came out of halftime with some of that momentum, but LSU eventually regained control.

That didn’t last for long as it became a back-and-forth shootout.

Eason and Days continued to lead the way for LSU but Jermaine Cousinard remained hot for South Carolina.

It all came down to the final seconds when LSU got the ball back down one. Pinson dribbled around, but the Gamecocks played solid defense, forcing a kick out to Days.

Days took the corner three but missed.

South Carolina got the rebound with enough time for LSU to foul. South Carolina made one of two from the line and gave LSU the ball back down two with 1.5 seconds.

Inbounding from under their own basket, LSU wasn’t able to do anything with it.

This is a bad loss for an LSU team that looked like it was gaining some momentum again. South Carolina is a decent team. They’re in the top 100. And yes, this game was on the road, but it still hurts in the grand scheme of things. Until this point, South Carolina’s best win was against UAB.

LSU turned the ball over too much, didn’t make enough free throws, and blew more than one double-digit lead.

LSU is still bound for the NCAA tournament but they are slipping closer to a No. 8 seed than to the top four seed they once looked like.

Next up is a road trip to Kentucky in what could be LSU’s toughest game of the year.

South Carolina’s Beamer heaps praise on Swinney, Clemson

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said South Carolina’s Shane Beamer should be considered for coach of the year in the SEC.

On Tuesday, Beamer said during his press conference that Swinney should be considered for ACC Coach of the Year, given the fact he’s guided the Tigers to an 8-3 record (6-2 ACC) despite everything they’ve gone through this season entering Saturday’s game against the Gamecocks (6-5, 3-5 SEC) at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.

“I saw where Dabo was very kind and mentioned something about me in regards to being the coach of the year in this conference. I think you could certainly make the case that he should be the coach of the year in their conference with the injuries they’ve overcome all over the field,” Beamer said. “So many new faces going into the season, and to struggle by their standards a little bit earlier in the season, to just continue to get better each week, to be sitting here at eight wins… and they still have a realistic opportunity to win the ACC this season if a couple things go the right way for them this weekend. And if they get into that game in Charlotte, I fully expect them to win that if they do.

“So, it’s a testament to the great job they’ve done, and I’ve got a ton of respect for him. I consider him a friend. He’s been very good to me since I took over here at Carolina. His wife has been very good to my wife, Emily, and I think a lot of him. We’re both competitors, and looking forward to a fantastic environment Saturday night.”

Beamer also heaped praise on Clemson’s defense, which leads the ACC and is eighth nationally in scoring defense (16.4 points per game allowed), and added that he believes the Tigers’ offense which has struggled over the course of the season is “peaking at the right time.”

“This is a fantastic Clemson team that is playing their best football, clearly,” Beamer said. “They’ve gotten better as the season’s gone on. Won four in a row, I believe, six out of their last seven. You look at what they did against Wake Forest … and Clemson dominated them.

“Their quarterback continues to get better every week. Defensively, they’re fantastic. They’re all over the place. So much respect watching them play, just how multiple they are. I don’t how they coach at all because they do so much defensively. It’s impressive to watch, and they’re disruptive. When you’re ranked in the top four in the country defensively in sacks and tackles for loss, that’s pretty amazing. So, disruptive to say the least with their defense. They’ve got fantastic personnel. Offensively, they’re getting better each week. Last four games, they’ve scored 30, 30, 44 and 48 in their last four games. So, they are certainly peaking at the right time.”

The Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0) stays unbeaten after a quick trip to northeast Alabama. Peyton Wilson’s leadoff home run set the tone early, as the Tide defeated Jacksonville State, 5-2 on Tuesday.

Jacksonville State answered Alabama’s early punch by scoring a run in the bottom of the 2nd, tying the game at 1-1. The game would remain deadlocked until the 5th inning when Sam Praytor knocked a two-run home run to return the lead to Bama, 3-1.

After a solo home run by the Gamecocks, Alabama sealed the deal in the 7th inning on a two-run double by William Hamiter, giving Alabama the 5-2 win.

Alabama moves to 4-0 and has won 18-straight games in the month of February. Crimson Tide hitters have also hit two or more home runs in every game this season.

Next up for Alabama is a mid-week date with UT-Martin. The Skyhawks visit Tuscaloosa for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. SEC Network + will carry the game, with Eli Gold and Lance Cormier on the call. You can also listen to Chris Stewart and Roger Hoover’s call on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

Will Muschamp has his own ideas on LSU’s visiting locker room

Tight spaces like the some of the visiting locker rooms across the country have become a concern during the coronavirus pandemic.

South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp holds the LSU football team he’s up against Saturday in a high regard, as he’s made clear all week.

“We’re looking forward to going to Baton Rouge on Saturday night against a very good LSU team,” he told reporters Monday . “I have a lot of respect for the team and the program having worked there before. Ed (Orgeron) has done an outstanding job, winning a national championship last year and did a fantastic job with that football team.”

But he doesn’t hold the same amount of respect for the team’s visiting locker room, which the Gamecocks will have to use this weekend.

In fact, Muschamp had some pretty strong words about the matter.

“The one we’re walking into this weekend (at LSU) is not really worth a damn either,” he said this week.

Tight locker rooms and tight spaces in general have become much more of a real concern, rather than just an annoying inconvenience, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Gamecocks will look to add to a win after an impressive victory over Auburn, while LSU will look to get back to the win column when the two teams kick off at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday in Baton Rouge.

LSU QB Myles Brennan ‘questionable’ vs. South Carolina with injury

LSU could be without Myles Brennan as it prepares to face South Carolina on Saturday.

The LSU Tigers were expected to be without starting quarterback Myles Brennan against Florida, and the postponement of the game gave the team an extra week for the quarterback to heal from a “significant lower-body injury.”

Orgeron also said that Brennan wouldn’t have been able to take the field against Florida, and that it would have been one of two freshman quarterbacks — T.J. Finley or Max Johnson — taking the snaps instead.

The head coach said he’s been very impressed with the progress both have made, saying he believed each of them had NFL-level talent.

That could very well be the case again this week, considering that Brennan is questionable. Orgeron mentioned that if this is the case, A.J. Aycock would be the third quarterback in line.

“It’s taking a little bit more time to heal,” Orgeron said of Brennan’s injury. “We thought he’d be back today, but he’s not and I don’t know if he’s going to play this game.”

The Tigers are set to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks next at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday in Tiger Stadium.

Texas Longhorns Officially Announce Coleman Hutzler Joining Staff

The Texas Longhorns officially welcomed Coleman Hutzler to the staff. He will be the linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator.

Late on Monday evening the rumor mill starting catching wind of the Texas Longhorns adding a new staff member to take over as the linebackers assistant coach opening. As first reported by Anwar Richardson, Coleman Hutzler was the front runner to take that spot. On Tuesday afternoon, the Longhorns made it official that Hutzler would take over linebackers coach and was named co-defensive coordinator.

Hutzler was most recently with the South Carolina Gamecocks serving under former Longhorns’ defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. In 2017, Hutzler was nominated for the Broyles Award that goes to the nation’s best assistant coach.

“Coleman is a coach who came highly recommended by several people I have a great deal of respect for in our business,” Herman said. “When we had a chance to sit down and talk with him, he certainly lived up to everything we had heard. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience, is high energy and has accomplished a great deal while spending much of his career coaching in big-time environments in the SEC. He’ll do a terrific job developing our linebackers and helping us grow on defense. We’re excited to get him on board and to get him around our team and out on the road recruiting for us.” –Tom Herman to TexasSports.com
