Former Texas QB Garrett Gilbert may not get to start Cowboys’ next game

On Sunday, former Texas Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert made his first NFL start. He and the Dallas Cowboys lost 24-19 to the Steelers

On Sunday afternoon former Texas quarterback, who spent three years in Austin before transferring to SMU, earned his first NFL start. With so many injuries surrounding the Dallas Cowboys, Garrett Gilbert started his first NFL game even though he was in the league since 2014.  Injuries to Dak Prescott and Andy Dalton made it possible. His first assignment would be none other than the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers.

Matching up with the No. 4 ranked scoring defense in the league with an offensive line ravaged by injury is no easy task. It seemed as though Gilbert was up for the challenge. Through  three quarters he had the Cowboys in position to win with a 19-9 lead. The Steelers offense would break through scoring 15 points in the fourth to secure the win, 24-19.

Overall, Gilbert looked good. For a guy in his first start you didn’t see the jitters and commanded the huddle. They just couldn’t do enough to win but it was a positive sign for the team. He definitely earned the opportunity to start again, unless you ask head coach Mike McCarthy.

According to the Athletic’s Jon Machota, the run for Gilbert may come to an end before it even gets started. Andy Dalton was placed on the COVID-19 list before the Steelers game and could return when they come off their bye week.

If it isn’t with Dallas, hopefully the play of Garrett Gilbert earns him another opportunity somewhere.

WATCH: Former Texas Longhorns quarterback throws first NFL touchdown

Former Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert threw his first touchdown in the NFL to CeeDee Lamb. Watch the moment here.

Once upon a time, this former Texas Longhorns quarterback was playing in the national championship as a freshman.

Fast forward a decade, and he is making his first start for the Dallas Cowboys. Garrett Gilbert hasn’t had an easy road to the NFL. He made multiple stops until getting the call to come to the Cowboys. His first challenge was the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the second quarter with his team leading 3-0, Gilbert was looking to put the Cowboys up 10-0 against the top team in the NFL. Former Oklahoma Sooner CeeDee Lamb gave him the opportunity to complete his first touchdown pass in the NFL.

That pass gave the Cowboys a 10-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Gilbert has completed 7-of-10 passes for 89 yards and that touchdown. He is also the leading rusher for the Cowboys with 28 yards. Cowboys currently lead 13-6 just before halftime. Can Gilbert win his first start in the NFL?

Report: Former Longhorn Earl Thomas won’t be joining Houston

After a meeting was announced between the Houston Texans and Earl Thomas, it appears that this isn’t going to happen after all.

On Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Earl Thomas would be meeting with the Houston Texans. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would indeed be signing with the team. They were looking for help on a team that has yet to create a turnover through three games. Then on Tuesday, it was reported that the meeting was on hold per Josina Anderson. Then the fun started.

John McClain reported that the team decided that Earl Thomas wasn’t a good fit for the team. Which begs the question, if so many teams don’t think he is a good fit will Earl Thomas play again? At some point organizations have to weigh if the return on investment is worth the antics and drama that some players can bring.

The latest report from Schefter contradicts the report from McClain. According to his report, the Texans stated they needed to cancel the workout due to COVID-19 concerns.

While the reports are conflicting as to why his meeting was called off, the result is the same. Earl Thomas isn’t going to be signing with Houston. The ideal situation for the former Longhorn could be the Dallas Cowboys. However, the Cowboys front office have been very clear that they won’t be bringing in any defensive backs to try and cure what ails them.

Given how they performed against Thomas’ former team, maybe they should since their coverage was as effective as a wet paper sack.
