Report: Aggie legend Ty Warren hired to coaching position with Stephen F. Austin

Two-time Super Bowl winner and Texas A&M legend Ty Warren has reportedly taken a new coaching postion with Stephen F. Austin.

Within the annals of Texas A&M Football history, no one has yet to top the legend that is defensive tackle Ty Warren, who after four dominant seasons (1999-2003) with the Aggies, went on to be selected 13th overall in the 2003 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots (2003-2010).

Earlier this week, rumors were confirmed by Football Scoops’ Zach Barnett that Warren has taken a coaching position with FCS Stephen F. Austin under Head coach Colby Carthel as the defensive line coach, and will also serve as the assistant head coach for the 2023 college football season.

In seven NFL seasons with the Patriots, Warren won Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXIX in his first two seasons with the franchise, while accumulating 374 tackles and 20.5 sacks and was named First-Team All-Pro after the 2007 season, and is a member of the All-Decade Team. Warren played one season with the Denver Broncos before retiring after the 2012 season, and before the 2010 offseason, Warren returned to Texas A&M to finish his undergraduate degree in Agricultural Development and became the first member of his family to graduate from college.

Warren’s coaching career began as a minority coaching assistant for the Detroit Lions during the 2020 season, and after a brief coaching internship with the New Orleans Saints, he was hired by the XFL’s Orlando Guardians as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach on Sept. 13th of last year, but suddenly left the program in late March, and now we all know the reason behind the departure.

Warren is joining a Lumberjacks program that won a share of the WAC championship in 2022. Congratulations to Ty Warren and his family on the promotion in what is already a very bright coaching future!

REPORT: Familiar name has emerged as a potential candidate for Alabama’s DC opening

Kevin Steele has reportedly emerged as a candidate for the Alabama DC opening.

Alabama’s defensive coordinator opening has created a lot of headlines over the last couple of weeks and it now appears that a new yet familiar name has emerged as a contender for the job.

Kevin Steele, Miami’s current defensive coordinator has reportedly become one of Nick Saban’s primary targets for the opening.

Steele has a ton of experience as a college coach, especially in the SEC and even in Tuscaloosa with coach Saban and the Crimson Tide.

Steele has spent a total of four seasons with Saban at Alabama including being the Tide’s defensive coordinator in 2007. Steele has also been the defensive coordinator at LSU and Auburn.

While on the surface this may not appear to be a “homerun hire” Steele has a ton of experience and is well-respected in the coaching world.

I think it is also important to remember that coach Saban recently hired an up-and-coming defensive coach Austin Armstrong to his staff last month and Steele could simply be coming in to help groom him.

No official hire has been made but Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.

Notre Dame offensive analyst appears to be on the move

Taylor must have liked what he saw from him…

Former Notre Dame running backs coach [autotag]Lance Taylor[/autotag] was recently named the head coach at Western Michigan.  This came after Taylor spent one season as Louisville’s offensive coordinator.  He had previously worked at Notre Dame from 2019-2021, helping to improve the Fighting Irish backfield.

Taylor is working to assemble his first staff as a head coach and it appears one Notre Dame employee is about to be joining him.  According to John Brice of Football Scoop, Taylor will be hiring Notre Dame senior analyst Trevor Mendelson.  Mendelson played on Marshall’s offensive line before getting into coaching.  He spent time at Wake Forest previous to Notre Dame and is said to have spent the majority of this season working with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

Although not a glaring hole, it’s still one that will now looked to be filled by Marcus Freeman and Tommy Rees.

How Brian Kelly left and how Marcus Freeman had Ohio State DC offer

Going to be a long while before we get as crazy of two weeks regarding Notre Dame football again…

Multiple times we’ve discussed at Fighting Irish Wire just how close things were to completely being blown up for the Notre Dame football program following Brian Kelly’s sudden departure for LSU.  Now thanks to a report from FootballScoop, we have an even better understanding of how crazy things could have ended up.

You can read the entire report here for full details but some key takeaways from it:

CFB’s top-paid LB coaches: Where does Georgia’s Glenn Schumann rank?

Kirby Smart and company spare little expense when hiring the coaching pieces that best fit the Bulldogs’ puzzle.

Kirby Smart and company spare little expense when hiring the coaching pieces that best fit the Bulldogs’ puzzle.

Georgia inside linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann arrived in Athens from the University of Alabama, where he worked under Smart as the Crimson Tide’s Director of Development and Associate Director of Player Personnel.

Schumann briefly held behind-the-scenes recruiting role early on in Kirby Smart’s tenure as Georgia’s head football coach before being quickly promoted to an on-field linebackers coach in 2017.

As per FootballScoop, Schumann is the third highest-earning LB coach in college football, behind Sal Sunseri of Alabama and Coleman Hutzler of Texas.

Sunseri tips the scales at $650,000 and Hutzler rakes in $600,000 under his contract. Schumann is tied at third with Washington’s Bob Gregory. Both coaches’ salaries are listed at $550,000.

Unlike the lyrics from but very much like the bank accounts of rock and roll super-group Temple of the Dog (Temple of the Dawg?), nobody on the list is going hungry.

Kirby Smart wants to eat.

He wants his players to eat (warning: language NSFW).

It would appear he wants his position coaches to eat, too.
