Carson Wentz, Fletcher Cox among 7 Eagles to collect roster bonuses

Eagles payout roster bonuses to 7 players including Carson Wentz

The NFL started the new league year on time and free agency kicked off with some major surprises, including the Eagles landing Darius Slay.

Lost in all the madness of COVID-19 and free agency, NFL teams around the league have started to deliver roster bonuses.

Cox, Wentz, Darius Slay, DeSean Jackson, Jason Kelce, Jake Elliott and Cre”Von LeBlanc all received direct deposits from the Eagles.

According to Over The Cap, Carson Wentz and Fletcher Cox are among seven Eagles players to collect roster bonuses.

The Eagles star signal-caller had a fully guaranteed $8 million roster delivered on March 20. Wentz’s $15.4 million 2021 base salary is also fully guaranteed.

Wentz is set to earn just under $40 million in 2020, with a $30 million option bonus, $8 million roster bonus, & $1.4 million salary.

10 Eagles with the biggest cap numbers for 2020 NFL season

10 Eagles with the biggest cap numbers for 2020 NFL season

The Philadelphia Eagles entered the start of free agency with around $44 million in cap space, and with the several huge contracts on the horizon for the coming season and the trade for Darius Slay, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for several big named veterans.

Carson Wentz will be playing on the last year of his rookie deal and the Birds will likely have a decision on Fletcher Cox, whose cap number continues to rise with each passing day.

With the Eagles in the midst of their retool and youth movement, here’s a look at the ten biggest cap numbers for this upcoming season via Over The Cap.

1) Fletcher Cox $22.8M

The Eagles signed Cox to a 6 year, $102.6 million extensions in 2016 and although his play has dipped some, he’s still one of the top-2 defensive tackles in the game and warrants his salary.  The 2020 season will be Cox’s last with guaranteed money and it’ll be a situation to watch.

4 takeaways from the Eagles agreeing to deal with DT Javon Hargrave

4 takeaways from Eagles agreeing to deal with DT Javon Hargrave

[jwplayer XOw3Fyxk]

The Philadelphia Eagles have a new game-wrecker nicknamed the ‘Gravedigger’ to pair with Fletcher Cox in what should be the NFL’s most dominant interior tandem.

Javon Hargrave is leaving the Steelers to come across the state after agreeing to a three-year, $39 million deal that includes $26 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter.

The 89th overall pick in the 2016 draft, Hargrave played in 62 career regular-season games with the Steelers, starting 52, while racking up 168 tackles (22 for loss), 14.5 sacks and 22 quarterback hits.

Over the past two seasons, Hargrave has been dominant, tallying 67 tackles and 10.5 sacks while helping the Steelers lead the NFL in sacks during that span.

Now an Eagle, he’ll team with Fletcher Cox, while allowing Philadelphia to have one of the most versatile defensive fronts in the NFL.

Here are 4 takeaways from Hargrave’s deal:

1. Eagles are back to prioritizing the defensive line

The Eagles prioritize the defensive line an had gotten away from the pressurized front that had given offenses hell over the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Hargrave is a major boost to an interior defensive line that’s been lacking outside of Fletcher Cox.

3 things to know about new Eagles interior game-wrecker Javon Hargrave

Eagles agree to deal with Javon Hargrave

The Philadelphia Eagles missed out on the No. 1 rated free agent cornerback, Byron Jones, but championships are built in the trenches and teams can’t score if their quarterback is on the ground.

The Eagles were pretty quiet during the first day of the legal tampering period but got a jump on things Monday night when they signed Javon Hargrave away from the Steelers for $39 million over three-years.

Hargrave is a talented player and will fit in with the blue-collar culture that Eagles fans represent.

If you’re not familiar with the monster in the middle, here are three things to know about the Eagles star.

1. Hargrave is now the NFL’s highest-paid nose tackle

The Eagles don’t play a 3-4 defense, so the honor is null and void, but with his 3-year, $39 million deal, Hargrave would be recognized as the highest-paid nose tackle in the game today.

a game wrecker, Hargrave was the 8th highest graded interior defender last seasons.

Eagles agree to re-sign DT Hassan Ridgeway on a 1-year deal

Eagles agree to 1-year deal with DT Hassan Ridgeway

The NFL’s legal tampering period is set to start but the Philadelphia Eagles have already started to take care of their own, agreeing to a contract with defensive tackle, Hassan Ridgeway.

The Eagles acquired Ridgeway in a deal last offseason with the Colts and the talented defensive tackle registered 2 sacks & 4 tackles for loss in seven games (five starts) before he suffered a season-ending injury.

2020 NFL Combine: 10 DL for the Eagles to watch

2020 NFL Combine: 10 DL for the Eagles to watch

The 2020 NFL Combine will now feature the defensive players with workouts and position drills for defensive linemen and linebackers.

The Eagles have a need for depth on the defensive line, despite Brandon Graham, Derek Barnett, Fletcher Cox and Malik Jackson all set to return as starters.

With Graham, Cox, and Jackson getting up there in age, it’ll be imperative for the Eagles to land some young talent along the defensive front.

Here are ten defensive linemen or edge rushers regardless of the position that the Eagles should watch at the NFL Combine on Saturday.

1. Josh Uche | EDGE | Michigan

A standup linebacker for Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines, Uche has the ability to be an every-down pass rusher in the NFL, who can also be versatile in a zone or man pass coverage.

With the Eagles looking to be innovative while getting younger and more versatile, Uche could be perfect against the grain option.

Making the case for why the Eagles should exercise Derek Barnett’s 5th-year option

The Philadelphia Eagles have some pressing needs on the roster, but one area that’s solid regardless of numbers is the defensive end position.

Brandon Graham is aging but he’s still one of the NFL fiercest pass rushers and he’ll once again pair with Derek Barnett. Injuries have limited the former first-round pick out of Tennessee to 35 games in three seasons, but when he’s in the lineup, he’s supremely effective.

Barnett had 6.5 sacks last season, not eye-opening numbers, but his 22 quarterback knockdowns suggest that he’s continuing to improve as an edge rusher.

The Eagles have until May 30 to pick up Barnett’s 5th-year option at around $9,451,000 or close to $10 million if the figure rises.

It should be a no-brainer, as the Eagles need to continue developing Barnett while holding onto his rights for an extra year. Barnett’s unlikely to regress and he seems to be just hitting his stride as a defensive end.

He plays hard every down, his plays can’t be measured in sacks, nor can his constant motor and dedication to the position.

Still, only 23 years old, Barnett has 14 career sacks despite only playing in 35 games and from an experience standpoint, you can make the case that the defensive end is just figuring out the game and will be the ultimate disruptor with more game experience.

With plenty of room to grow and no true replacement on the roster, the decision is obvious for the Eagles.

Eagles land in the top-15 of way too early Power Rankings

The Philadelphia Eagles are No. 13 in the Touchdown Wire’s way-too-early 2020 power rankings

The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for 2020 free agency after finally announcing all of their coaching changes and hires.

With Carson Wentz completing his finest season as a pro and the Birds set to embark on an aggressive youth movement, Touchdown Wire just unveiled their first of many way too early power rankings, and the Eagles landed at No. 13.

13. Philadelphia Eagles

Primary free agents: OT Jason Peters, S Rodney McLeod, WR Nelson Agholor, DE Vinny Curry

The Eagles finished 9-7 last season, their second year in a row with such a record after their Super Bowl win at the end of the 2017 campaign. We’re inclined to give Doug Pederson’s team a relative pass for a couple of reasons — a running game that had Miles Sanders leading all backs with just 818 yards, and more importantly, an absolutely horrific slate of receiver injuries that resulted in Greg Ward and Robert Davis as the team’s starting wideouts in Philly’s wild-card loss to the Seahawks. Quite a step down from the ideal of DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor. If the Eagles can reassemble that offense and improve on a defense that had its moments despite all the inconsistency, the Eagles could do more than just win a weak NFC East in 2020.

With DeSean Jackson returning, Miles Sanders more seasoned and a possible 10 picks in the draft, the Eagles are a few defensive adjustments away from making a strong case to repeat as NFC East champions.

Eagles have 7 players named to PFF’s top 101 from 2019

The Philadelphia Eagles 2019 season was difficult from an injury standpoint, but individually the Birds have some star-power.

Pro Football Focus recently put out their annual list of the “top 101 players” from the 2019 NFL season and seven Eagles made the cut, up from the four players that made the list in 2018.

In a shocker to some Eagles fans, a talented tight end made the cut, but it didn’t include tight end, Zach Ertz.

Ertz didn’t make the list despite making his third Pro Bowl in 2019. Eagles star quarterback Carson Wentz was among the best signal-callers in football but was also excluded from the list.

Here are your seven Eagles to make the cut:

5. BRANDON BROOKS
2018: Unranked

Brandon Brooks tore his Achilles at the tail end of the 2018 season — in January 2019, to be exact — so playing to even a respectable level this year would have been an achievement. Instead, Brooks went ahead and had the best season of his career and was the best offensive lineman in football fresh off the back of an injury that almost invariably affects performance in the first year a player returns from it. Brooks surrendered just one sack and 19 total pressures all season, and he earned the best run-blocking grade in the NFL among guards. He won PFF’s Bruce Matthews Award as the league’s best lineman and continued to get even better, despite being one the most underrated players in the league.–PFF

Brooks was the highest-graded linemen in the league this season (92.9) and was rewarded with a massive new deal.
