Report: LSU out of the running for five-star safety Jacoby Mathews

Not the news that LSU was expecting to get.

Former LSU commit and two-sport star at Ponchatoula High School in Louisiana is set to announce his commitment on Wednesday evening. However, one report from On3 has the Tigers out of the running for the No. 2 safety in the country.

Mathews originally committed to LSU in April of 2021, choosing the Tigers over Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, Texas, and USC. He then re-opened his recruitment in late July. LSU made a coaching change moving on from Ed Orgeron to Brian Kelly after the 2021 season and Mathews’ recruitment has remained open during that period.

Down the stretch, head coach Brian Kelly made Jacoby Mathews a top priority for this recruiting class. Mathews had an on-campus visit, with another top recruit, linebacker Harold Perkins, on Jan. 28.

All signs were pointing to LSU landing the highly coveted safety in their 2022 class but according to Billy Embody, things have changed. It appears that the Texas A&M bagmen have come through

The LSU defense could have used Mathews but they did add Lafayette Christian’s Jordan Allen at the position. The team also went into the transfer portal to snag former Arkansas Razorbacks safety Joe Foucha. As far as beyond the 2022 season, safety should be an emphasis in the 2023 class.

After landing a commitment from Jaelyn Davis-Robinson to kick-off signing day, the Tigers appear to be whiffing on two of their top three recruits on the day. Harold Perkins will announce his decision at 1:15 p.m. CT.

We will find out if Brian Kelly can salvage this day. They are also waiting on the announcements of Caleb Douglas and Danny Lewis Jr.

Recruiting Trends: Ponchatoula safety Jacoby Mathews trending to LSU

Perhaps some good news coming LSU’s way

One of the top two remaining players on the 2022 recruiting board is Ponchatoula safety, Jacoby Mathews. The former Tigers commit has stayed in communication with the team despite the staff turnover. Brian Kelly and Kerry Cooks are trying to nail down the five-star safety.

The Tigers have one safety on the books for the 2022 recruiting class with Jordan Allen of Lafayette Christian Academy. Allen played with current LSU Tigers nickel cornerback Sage Ryan. Allen could be moved over to cornerback if the team feels he would be a bigger asset to the defense. Allen plays cornerback but most recruiting services have him as a safety.

The top safety on the board is Mathews. Some recruiting analysts believed he could land at Texas A&M or Florida. Gators head coach Billy Napier has been swiping a good amount of Louisiana talent. They secured Jennings running back Trevor Etienne and have been in hot pursuit of TreVonte’ Citizen and Mathews. The Gators also added another top safety to their 2022 class with Kamari Wilson of the IMG Academy.

With all that said, it appears that Mathews is trending the Tigers way according to On3.

What On3 Says…

In fact, the On3 RPM says LSU now has a 75.5% chance of landing Mathews, who ranks as the No. 19 overall player in the final On300 for the Class of 2022. Mathews also ranks as the No. 1 player in Louisiana, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

And it’s those expert predictions that have shifted things in LSU’s direction for Jacoby Mathews. There have been three predictions in January that have pushed LSU’s chances from 56% to where things stand now.

To the experts, it’s become crystal clear that Brian Kelly’s new staff in Baton Rouge has done a great job of recruiting Mathews.

Let’s hope this holds true and the Tigers can add a five-star defender to their 2022 roster. If Major Burns has injury issues again in 2022, it could be Mathews asked to step up into a bigger role if the staff feels he is ready for it. More playmakers on the backend of the defense wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Five-star safety confirms visit for Oklahoma State game

You can add another big name expected to be in Austin this weekend!

Even with the Oklahoma loss, one of the most important weekends in the program’s recent history is in front of Texas. From the potential to take down undefeated No. 12 Oklahoma State to a huge recruiting weekend, Steve Sarkisian needs to pull out all the stops.

You can add another big name expected to be in Austin this weekend in five-star safety Jacoby Matthews. He tweeted out he would be making the trip on Monday afternoon. In what should be an official visit, Texas will host Matthews on his first OV of the fall.

Texas was thought to be squarely in the race before LSU was able to snag a commitment this past April. After decommitting, Texas A&M begun to trend for Matthews. They have hosted him twice, once officially on June 18 and another unofficial on July 31.

Now, Texas will get their shot.

Defensive backs coach Terry Joseph is going to keep Texas in the race for Matthews more than anybody. Early opportunities to play in the secondary and Terry’s Louisiana ties will be the pitch to the five-star.

Speaking of Louisiana, with the future of Ed Oregeron in question at LSU, Texas has the opportunity to raid one of the country’s deepest pools of talent. Four-star edge J’Mond Tapp and three-star cornerback Ronald Lewis have already committed to crossing states lines.

Matthews’ fellow statesman and five-star quarterback Arch Manning will be at the game as well. Selling the possibility of some of the state’s top prospects coming to Austin will resonate over the next two cycles.

On the 247Sports composite, Matthews is the No. 27 overall player and No. 2 at the safety position. Within the state of Louisiana, he ranks as the No. 3 prospect.

LSU is ‘still in the mix’ for five-star safety Jacoby Mathews

The LSU Tigers are still very much in the mix for 2022 five-star safety Jacoby Mathews.

Back in April, the LSU Tigers thought they found their safety of the future in 2022 five-star Jacoby Mathews. He committed to Ed Orgeron to give the team its third five-star pledge of the class. In June after two unofficial visits to Baton Rouge with two visits to Texas A&M, he re-opened his recruiting in late July.

The Ponchatoula safety is still highly sought after by those two programs in the SEC. Mathews is a highly versatile athlete at the high school level. In football he players quarterback and safety. On the court in basketball, Mathews is also highly productive averaging 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

In a recent interview with Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports, Mathews left it open to recommit to the LSU Tigers football program.

“I just told him I felt like I committed too early and he told me he understood and they’re going to keep recruiting me,” Mathews said. “They’re definitely one of my top schools and it’s a possibility I can recommit there.”

The interview also stated that he will be at a lot of LSU games this season. It going to come down to a recommit to the Tigers or pledging to the Texas A&M Aggies.

His offer list feels like a mile long with teams such as Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, and USC. They all joined LSU and A&M among the suitors. In this two-horse race, it could come down to the wire. At this time it is a waiting game until we get closer to the early signing period in December.
