Ohio State makes move in latest ESPN College Football Power Rankings

After two games played, ESPN has Ohio State moving up towards the top of its weekly 2020 power rankings in college football.

After an impressive second game by Ohio State, ESPN shook up their power rankings and moved the Buckeyes up one spot. Last week ESPN had Ohio State at No. 3, but a close game between Clemson and Boston College without Trevor Lawrence dropped the Tigers down a couple of spots to No. 4. Clemson will try to soldier on without Lawrence when they go to South Bend and take on ESPN’s No. 3 team, Notre Dame.

Moving up to the No. 1 slot was Mac Jones and Alabama. However, the Buckeyes being second after only two games is certainly a story in itself. ESPN has been high on Ohio State all offseason, but OSU knocking on the door to the No. 1 slot after just two weeks speaks volumes for how good this team has been.

With Justin Fields absolutely lighting up the field in the passing game, the defense shutting down two solid teams, and the offensive weapons showing up early this season, it all leads to the Buckeyes being a favorite of ESPN. As long as this team keeps winning and winning convincingly, there is no reason to think it will drop. On to week three, or is it ten. No matter, just keep taking care of business.

After the top four teams, Georgia (5), Cincinnati (6), BYU (7), Indiana (8), Texas A&M (9), and BYU (10) round out the top ten.

ESPN’s Week 9 College Football Power Rankings: Texas within top 25

Ohio State remains near top of ESPN’s Week 8 Power Rankings

After one game, ESPN stood fast in keeping the Ohio State football team near the top of its Week 8 College Football Power Rankings.

After one game ESPN stood fast, keeping Ohio State as the third team in its power rankings. Last week, the Buckeyes were in third, up one spot, behind Alabama and Clemson. The rankings reiterated what we all knew: Justin Fields is really, really good.

With Jaylen Waddle going down for the season at Alabama, it could cost the Tide a bit in future rankings if the offense drops off a little. Mac Jones has played really well for the Crimson Tide, but not having Waddle could end up hurting Alabama against better teams.

Clemson has played well this year, and while it has not really been tested, nothing says the Tigers will drop anytime soon. They still have a looming game with Notre Dame and a feisty Virginia Tech, but baring a surprise, Clemson should be in the top two for the rest of the season.

However, Ohio State sitting at three is a solid place to be, and a huge win against a reeling, albeit angry, Penn State could help this week. If Justin Fields continues to perform as he did against Nebraska, then there is no reason to think the Buckeyes shouldn’t stay in the top three — at a minimum.

Ohio State moves up a spot in ESPN’s college football power rankings

Ohio State is prepping to play game one this weekend but in the meantime, ESPN has elevated the Buckeyes a spot in its Power Rankings.

Finally, mercifully, we are officially in game week mode for Ohio State football. After a start, stop, then start again offseason, we’ve finally got a full slate of Big Ten games on tap for this weekend.

And while Ohio State should have a whale of a team this year, the national media has been on a kind of wait and see mode with the Buckeyes, all while Alabama and Clemson look like Alabama and Clemson yet again.

ESPN’s Chris Low has been publishing his weekly college football Power Rankings throughout the season, and so far he’s had the Buckeyes up in the top five without seeing any product on the field. That continued after week seven of the college football schedule, but OSU even moved up a spot with the Georgia loss (I know, shocking).

Now, instead of Ohio State appearing at No. 4, Low has the Buckeyes just behind the Tigers and Tide and No. 3, sitting in the waiting room, just looking to make a statement.

Behind those three, rounding out the top ten include Georgia (4), Penn State (5), Notre Dame (6), Oklahoma State (7), Cincinnati (8), BYU (9), and Oregon (10).

We’ve been high on this Buckeye squad since the offseason and expect it to come out swinging on Saturday against Nebraska. After that, we’ll see where Low has OSU going into next week and beyond.

For now, though, here’s what Low says about Ohio State.

Ohio State near the top of ESPN’s College Football Power Rankings after week five

After week five of the college football season, ESPN’s Chris Lowe has Ohio State near the top of his latest College Football Power Rankings.

Each week, ESPN’s Chris Lowe jostles his list of college football teams based on how he believes they look or how good he perceives they are (especially in the case of idle Ohio State).

After college football’s fifth week of games, he has updated those power rankings and he still has the Buckeyes near the top, but not No. 1 like the worldwide leader’s SP+ Rankings. Still, he’s got OSU ranked higher than a lot of other media sites and members that have begun to let recent performance on the field jade their view of how good Ohio State is.

The Buckeyes might be first in our hearts, but they’re not at the top of the pile according to Lowe. But where does the ESPN writer have OSU after this past weekend?

Texas climbs to No. 1 in latest ESPN Big 12 Power Rankings

The latest power rankings from ESPN are out after a wild week four. Texas climbed to the top spot while Oklahoma tumbled to four.

It was a wild weekend across the college football landscape. The nation saw two top five teams fall in Oklahoma and Louisiana State. Plus the thrilling finish for the Texas Longhorns. There was plenty of fallout, including many now leaving both Texas and OU out of their College Football Playoff predictions.

With the win by Kansas State, how high would they jump after dropping their opener to Arkansas State? The Sooners looked unstoppable against Missouri State but a lackluster fourth quarter doomed their bid at an unbeaten season. ESPN weighed in with their weekly Power Rankings.

Picking a pecking order in this unusual season isn’t easy — even at the top. Texas barely survived the Red Raiders and needed a frenzied comeback, while Oklahoma was in full control of K-State … until it wasn’t. – Sam Kahn

  1. Texas Longhorns
  2. Oklahoma State Cowboys
  3. Kansas State Wildcats
  4. Oklahoma Sooners
  5. Baylor Bears
  6. Iowa State Cyclones
  7. Texas Tech Red Raiders
  8. West Virginia Mountaineers
  9. Texas Christian Horned Frogs
  10. Kansas Jayhawks

ESPN wasn’t as kind to the Longhorns or the rest of Big 12 in their college football power rankings. In fact, no team was in the top 15 despite the Longhorns 2-0 start. They were listed behind five teams who haven’t even played a single game.

ESPN’s Chris Low ranked the Longhorns 17th overall.

If you’re looking for bright spots (and, yes, we’re being overly positive), Texas has erupted for 122 points in its first two games, and Sam Ehlinger has thrown 10 touchdown passes. But the Longhorns’ 63-56 overtime escape Saturday against Texas Tech after trailing 56-41 late in the fourth quarter raises all sorts of questions about a Texas defense that was absolutely shredded. The Longhorns are always going to have a shot as long as Ehlinger is at quarterback, and maybe this was just one of those ugly run-and-gun wins that are the norm in the Big 12. At least, that’s what they’re hoping on the Forty Acres.

Irish drop in ESPN Power Rankings but how far?

After the first week of “Power Five” games, there was some movement inside ESPN week 2 College Football Power Rankings.

Heading into their opener against Duke, Notre Dame was fifth in ESPN’s Power Rankings. After a lackluster performance against the Blue Devils where the offense was slugging to get going, the Irish dropped down two spots to seventh.

Honestly this shouldn’t come as a surprise. It was Oklahoma and Texas jumping the Irish after both their quarterbacks had impressive debuts. For the Longhorns it was Sam Ehlinger, who has seemingly been there forever, torching UTEP for 426 yards and 5 touchdowns with no picks.

The Sooners had a first-year starter at quarterback in Spencer Rattler, who unlike his 3 predecessors, will actually start more than just one year for Lincoln Riley. Rattler was very impressive as he was 14/17 for 290 yards and 4 touchdowns, no picks, in just a half of work.

Chris Low pointed out the star of the Irish offense yesterday, Kyren Williams, saying “the Irish will be looking for additional impact players on offense, and sophomore running back Kyren Williams has all the tools to be one of those guys.” It certainly was nice to see Williams make noise but the offense needs to find other options as well. The offense can not get one-dimensional.

If the Irish offense looked a bit mome competent, they probably wouldn’t have been jumped by both teams, but that wasn’t the case. Ian Book struggled early, but find a decent groove in the second half. There is still a lot to be desired from the 3rd year starter.

The good news is that the season is young and the Irish won’t be challenged much until the face Clemson on October 24, the eighth game of the season. It would have been nice to be viewed better but the talent is there. The Irish just need to translate it over from the practice field to Saturday’s.
