Alabama MBB defeats Oregon in Emerald Coast Classic

The Alabama men’s basketball team defeated Oregon 99-91. The Crimson Tide finished the Emerald Coast Classic with a 2-1 record.

The Alabama men’s basketball team suffered an 11-point loss in the second game of the Emerald Coast Classic to Ohio State. On Saturday, the Crimson Tide bounced back to defeat Oregon 99-91.

Alabama had some trouble early on slowing down Ducks sharpshooter Jermaine Couisnard. The South Carolina transfer scored 24 points and shot 9/14 from the field.

As for the Crimson Tide, the team was led offensively by senior guard Mark Sears. The Alabama native tallied 27 points on 8/13 from the field.

It was a good game for Alabama to get back in the win column. Nate Oats’ squad will return to action on Tuesday, November 28th. Alabama will play host to Clemson. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. CT / 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama men’s basketball program.

Alabama MBB falls to Ohio State in Emerald Coast Classic

Alabama men’s basketball fell to 4-1 on Friday night. The Crimson Tide lost to Ohio State by a final score of 92-81.

It was not the ideal night for the Alabama men’s basketball team. The Crimson Tide had a week to prepare for their second opponent in the Emerald Coast Classic — the Ohio State Buckeyes. In spite of that, Alabama lost 92-81 in an offensive battle on Friday night.

Nate Oats’ squad struggled for 40 minutes trying to defend the Buckeyes. Ohio State shot 54% from field goal range and 55.6% from three-point range. It just seemed like Alabama had no resolution to eliminate the Buckeyes’ scoring threats.

The Buckeyes were led offensively by sophomore guards Bruce Thornton and Roddy Gayle Jr. The two combined to score 52 points and shot 14-25 from the floor.

As for the Crimson Tide, they were led on the offensive end by North Dakota State transfer forward Grant Nelson and Hofstra transfer guard Aaron Estrada.

In the end, Alabama did not make enough stops on the defensive end to give themselves an opportunity to come away with a win. As a result of their loss, Alabama will now have to play the loser of the Oregon/Santa Clara game. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 EST / 3 CST.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama football program.

Ohio State basketball to face SEC school in Emerald Coast Classic

How do you feel about this matchup? #GoBucks

The Ohio State basketball program is looking to build on a positive ending to a rather unforgettable season last year. The Buckeyes finished in 13th place in the conference last season but found a way to make a run all the way to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament to provide a little momentum and hope for this coming hoops season.

The schedule won’t be an easy one in the rough and tumble Big Ten as well as a pretty high level of competition in the nonconference. One of those nonconference matchups was announced on Tuesday and it’ll be a big-time challenge for the Buckeyes. That’s because OSU’s matchups in the 2023 Emerald Coast Classic include a semifinal date with the Alabama Crimson Tide on November 24 at 7 p.m. ET.

After OSU hosts Western Michigan in the first game of the event, it’ll travel to Niceville, Florida to take on a Crimson Tide team that was the overall No. 1 seed in last season’s NCAA Tournament. Alabama was eventually upset by San Diego State in the Sweet 16 last year but finished the year 31-6. It’s expected to be a fringe top-ten team again this coming year.

OSU and ‘Bama haven’t played each other since the No. 4 ranked Tide beat the Buckeyes 54-48 on November 29, 2002. The two programs are 3-3 against each other all-time, making this just the seventh time the two programs will have faced each other.

The other semifinal matchup of the Emerald Coast Classic will be a contest between Oregon and Santa Clara. Other teams included in the matchups before heading to the campus of Northwest Florida State are Mercer, Tennessee State, and Southeastern Louisiana.

Ohio State basketball to participate in 2023 Emerald Coast Classic

Not quite the excitement of the Maui Invitational, but it’s still a warm-weather destination around Thanksgiving for Ohio State hoops next season. #GoBucks

In case you’ve lost track of what’s coming this late fall for Ohio State basketball, the Buckeyes will make a return to Hawaii for a spot in this year’s Maui Classic from November 21 to 23. It’ll be the first time OSU took the trip out to the islands since 2003 under Thad Matta.

And while that’s exciting and I’m scrambling to work on my travel plans (I mean, an excuse to go to Hawaii right?), there’s more preseason tournament news of the future for the Ohio State hoops team to pass along.

According to Jon Rothstein, the Buckeyes are reportedly set to take place in the 2023 Emerald Coast Classic along with Oregon, Alabama, and another team to still be announced.

If you don’t know much about the Emerald Coast Classic, we don’t blame you. I mean, it’s not Hawaii, and it’s only been around since 2014. It takes place in Niceville, Florida (no joke), which is in the panhandle near Destin.

This year’s event will include TCU, Iowa, Clemson, and Cal, with the event being held on Nov. 25th and 26th at Raider Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College. A time and broadcast info will be shared for next year’s event at a later date.

Ohio State basketball’s 2022 projected starters, key players 2.0

REPORT: Oregon will compete in the 2023 Emerald Coast Classic

The Oregon men’s basketball team will play in the 2023 Emerald Coast Classic with Alabama and Ohio State. A fourth team is still undetermined.

According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, the Oregon men’s basketball team will join Alabama and Ohio State to play in next year’s Emerald Coast Classic.

The tournament is still looking for a fourth team to complete the field for 2023.

As for this year’s field, TCU, Iowa, Clemson, and Cal will battle it out Nov. 25 and 26 at Raider Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College.

But by the time 2023 rolls around, Oregon might be ready to become conference members alongside the Buckeyes or the Crimson Tide with all of the conference realignment talk going on.

2023 will be the last season for the Pac-12 in its current form as UCLA and USC are scheduled to move on to the Big 10 beginning in 2024. Oregon, and the rest of the conference, are currently looking at their options as to where to land in 2024 and beyond.

Penn State defense clamps down on Oregon State in Emerald Coast Classic

Penn State basketball came away with a defensive win over Oregon State in the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday

Less than 24 hours after dropping a close overtime contest to LSU, Penn State men’s basketball managed to rebound for a win in the consolation game of the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday afternoon. Penn State’s 60-45 victory over Oregon State was the first time Penn State held an opponent to 45 points or fewer since 2018 and the win was highlighted by a game-high 14 points from Jalen Pickett.

Pickett had an encouraging trip to Florida for the Emerald Coast Classic. In both games played by the Nittany Lions, Pickett led the team in scoring. On Saturday against Oregon State, Pickett also had a season-high seven assists as he distributed the ball well, and he added four rebounds to his final stat line.

Adding to the offensive mix for Penn State were double-digit efforts from Seth Lundy and Myles Dread, with and 13 and 12 points respectively. Without a dominant performance on offense from anyone on the court, it was important for Penn State to bring the intensity on the defensive front. And with both teams coming off overtime losses the previous day, head coach Micah Shrewsberry was proud of how his team adjusted.

“Last night’s game took a lot out of us and it’s a quick turnaround to get to today,” Shrewsberry said in his postgame comments, referring to Penn State’s loss to LSU on Friday night. “I thought we started a little bit sluggish, and you could tell, you could see we didn’t quite have our legs. Part of that was playing last night and it was hard. Oregon State did the same thing – they had to play an overtime game even later than we did. So both teams were a little bit sluggish, but I thought, even while we were sluggish early in the game, we still defended, we still guarded, and that’s something we want to do each and every game and that gives us a chance to win.”

The win against Orgeon State was Penn State’s first win of the season away from home in the Bryce Jordan Center. Penn State was 0-2 away from home early on in the season before topping the Beavers on a neutral court.

Penn State will be home for its next game, a home contest against the Miami Hurricanes in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. Penn State hosts Miami on Wednesday, December 1 at 9:15 p.m. ET.

How to Watch/Hear/Stream Penn State basketball vs. Oregon State in the Emerald Coast Classic

Here is how to stream Penn State’s basketball game vs. Orgeon State in the Emerald Coast Classic

Penn State may have come up shy in overtime in their matchup with LSU on Friday night in the Emerald Coast Classic, but there will be a quick turnaround for the Nittany Lions. Penn State will take on Oregon State in the consolation game of the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Florida.

Penn State is still looking for its first win away from home early on this season. Penn State lost in a blowout at UMass in their second game of the season and lost to LSU Friday night despite forcing the game with the Tigers to overtime in a back-and-forth game.

Oregon State also played a game that went into overtime on Friday night. Given that both teams are coming off overtime losses on Friday night, there could be some tired legs on the court for this one.

If you want to catch the game, while also watching Penn State’s football regular-season finale at Michigan State, you may want to prepare your second viewing device ahead of time. The game will only be viewable via a live stream on the website of the Emerald Coast Classic.

Penn State comes up short in OT vs LSU in Emerald Coast Classic

Penn State gave LSU a good challenge, but the Nittany Lions could not pull the upset in the Emerald Coast Classic

Penn State went toe-to-toe against undefeated LSU Friday evening in the Emerald Coast Classic, but the Nittany Lions couldn’t keep up the pace in overtime in Niceville, Florida. Penn State lost to LSU, 68-63.

Penn State gave LSU their first real test of the season, although Penn State only became the first team to crack 60 points on the Tigers because they forced the game into overtime. And the sequence in which Penn State tied the game in the final second was worth watching once again, as Seth Lundy got the tip-in with just under a second remaining in regulation.

Jalen Pickett was Penn State’s leading scorer with 14 points. Senior Sam Sessoms had 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, but LSU was able to contain Sessoms in overtime with just one bucket in the extra five minutes. Myles Dread added 11 points in a tough defensive battle between the Nittany Lions and Tigers.

Penn State had their chances in the overtime, but just could not finish. Lundy missed on a dunk and was later called for a charge as he worked his way to the basket on the same prolonged possession. Two points would have cut the LSU lead to one point in the overtime, but the Tigers used the missed opportunity to salt the game away.

LSU head coach Will Wade complimented Penn State in his postgame media session, saying it was the kind of opponent that will ultimately help his team compete in the SEC down the road.

“It was a great game with two good teams,” Wade said, according to The Advocate. “We played a physical Big Ten-style team. With their physicality, they did some things other teams haven’t been able to do against us.”

Penn State will now play in the consolation game of the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions will face the loser of the Oregon State-Wake Forest game at 4 p.m. ET. This will, of course, overlap with the Penn State-Michigan State football game, which starts at 3:30 p.m., so plan accordingly for two-screen viewing of your Nittany Lions on Saturday afternoon.

Penn State basketball playing role of underdog against LSU in Emerald Coast Classic

Penn State men’s basketball is an underdog for the first time this season against LSU in the Emerald Coast Classic, according to Tipico

Penn State is spending its Thanksgiving weekend down in Florida as the Emerald Coast Classic continues. After winning their first game in the tournament at home earlier in the week against Cornell, overcoming a tough start to get past the Big Red, Penn State will now play as an underdog for the first time this season when they face the LSU Tigers on Friday evening.

According to Tipico, Penn State is 9.5-point underdog against LSU. The Tigers come into the game having played solid defense and are undefeated coming into the matchup with the Nittany Lions. LSU has not allowed an opponent to score more than 60 points in a game, and LSU is averaging 85.4 points per game early on this year. With Penn State not having quite the same offensive production and taking one bad loss on the road against UMass, it was expected LSU would be a solid favorite in the game.

Here is a look at the latest odds from Tipico for the Emerald Coast Classic contest on Friday.

Penn State-LSU odds from Tipico

  • Penn State: +9.5 (-108)
  • LSU: -9.5 (-112)
  • Penn State moneyline: +370
  • LSU moneyline: -520
  • Over 141.5: -112
  • Under 141.5: -108

On the football field this week, Penn State has gone from being listed as an underdog to a road favorite at Michigan State this weekend. Penn State had been a 1.5-point underdog on the road, but is now listed by Tipico as a 1.5-point favorite.
