Elijah Rushing, a 5-star defensive end, de-commits from Arizona

Five-star Elijah Rushing de-commits from Arizona over the weekend.

Arizona lost the biggest piece of its current recruiting class with the de-commitment of Elijah Rushing over the weekend.

Rushing is one of the nation’s top-ranked recruits. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound edge rusher was the highest-ranked commitment in the 2024 recruiting class for Arizona.

He is a senior at Salpointe Catholic (Tucson, Arizona) and is a five-star recruit. According to 247Sports, Rushing is the eighth-best recruit in the nation.

Through six games this season, Rushing has 26 total tackles. He has nine tackles for a loss and eight sacks.

Citing what he sees as “progress and strides” in the rebuilding Arizona program, Rushing said that despite this growth he doesn’t see the Wildcats as what is best for his future.

Rushing said as much in a statement made on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter:

“I have come to the conclusion that the program is not the right fit for me to take the next step with regard to my development. I am therefore decommitting from the program.”

Rushing holds a number of top national offers including from Notre Dame, Oregon and Tennessee among others.

Vols’ 2024 five-star edge target decommits from Arizona

2024 five-star edge prospect Elijah Rushing decommitted from Arizona on Sunday.

“I have taken into consideration the recent progress and strides the program has made,” Rushing announced. “Although it is evident that the program is on the rise, I have to consider my future goal. I have come to conclusion that the program is not the right fit for me to take my next step with regard to my development. I am, therefore, decommitting from the program.”

The 6-foot-6, 251-pound Rushing committed to Arizona on July 6. He committed to the Wildcats over Tennessee, Oregon, and Notre Dame.

Rushing is from from Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona.

5-star edge Elijah Rushing decommits from Arizona; projected to flip to Oregon

The Oregon Ducks are now projected to land 5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing, who decommitted from the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday.

Developments are starting to move pretty quickly in the recruiting world for the Oregon Ducks.

Sunday night brought substantial good news for Dan Lanning and his team, starting with the commitment of four-star cornerback Sione Laulea, the No. 1 rated junior college player in the 2024 class.

However, fireworks started after that. Recruiting predictions from 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong and Blair Angilau came in for the Ducks to flip five-star edge Elijah Rushing, who committed to the Arizona Wildcats this summer. Minutes later, the news broke that Rushing had officially decommitted from Arizona.

Rushing is rated by 247Sports as the No. 8 player overall and the No. 1 edge in the 2024 class. He was long thought to be an Oregon lean, but surprised many by committing to Arizona instead of the Ducks this summer.

We will see if he turns right around and joins the Ducks’ 2024 class. It could happen quickly.

Ducks move up in 2024 recruiting rankings with pair of blue-chip LB commitments

Over the past few days, Dan Lanning added the No. 17 and No. 18 ranked LBs in the 2024 class. Oregon’s national ranking is going up.

The Oregon Ducks were unable to add the first 5-star recruit of the 2024 class last week, missing out on Elijah Rushing, but they bounced back quickly with the ability to land both 4-star LB Dylan Williams, and 4-star LB Kamar Mothudi.

Williams and Mothudi rank as the No. 17 and No. 18 linebackers in the 2024 class, respectively.

This now gives Oregon 19 commitments in the 2024 class, and keeps them well inside the top 10 nationally. While they have work to do in order to reach that elusive mark of having a top 5 class nationally, and signing the top-rated class in school history, Dan Lanning and the Ducks seem to be well on their way to putting together something special in Eugene.

Column: Transfer portal era takes minor sting out of 5-star recruit runner-up finishes

The Oregon Ducks barely missed out on another 5-star recruit this week, but in the era of the transfer portal, there is some upside there.

Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks are not unfamiliar with this feeling, unfortunately.

Over the past 8-12 months, there have been a number of times where a highly-rated 5-star prospect flirted with the idea of committing to Oregon, and ended up choosing to go elsewhere.

David Hicks, Kadyn Proctor, Nyckoles Harbor, Johntay Cook, Richard Young. Those names all ring bells for certain reasons in Oregon football fan circles.

There have even been a couple of times where the player ultimately did verbally commit to the Ducks — Dante Moore, Peyton Bowen — but for one reason or another, something happened before they signed their letter of intent, and they landed at another school.

That’s what happened on Thursday afternoon when 5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing — the No. 8 player in the 2024 class — announced that he would commit to the hometown Arizona Wildcats, rather than the Oregon Ducks. For months, Rushing was thought to be a virtual lock to join Lanning and come to Eugene, but over the past 48 hours, something flipped, and he ended up staying close to home.

What happened? Who knows, ultimately? Does it matter? Not really.

The end result is the same: Oregon is left sitting as a silver medalist, rather than a gold medalist.

In the era of the transfer portal, however, that’s not exactly the worst thing in the world. Of course, I am not arguing in any way, shape, or form that the Ducks are better off by coming in second for some of the top recruits in the nation. 100 times out of 100, I would rather get the commitment from a player and roll the dice going into the future. However, in today’s era of college football, just because you missed out on a player once doesn’t mean that an opportunity to recruit him and sign him won’t present itself again.

We saw things play out this way recently with former 5-star defensive end Jordan Burch. While Lanning was the defensive coordinator at Georgia, he recruited Burch heavily and developed a great relationship with the No. 8 player in the 2020 class. Burch ended up choosing the South Carolina Gamecocks instead of the Bulldogs, but after a couple of seasons that didn’t meet his expectations, he began to look around.

That relationship was still strong, so he decided to come across the country and join up with Lanning in Eugene.

“I think it just shows that you never know when a relationship might go full circle,” Lanning said of Burch when talking to media members on Signing Day. “I know his work ethic, I know his demeanor and his approach and having a strong relationship. You know, four years ago, you never realize it’s gonna pay off down the road and come full circle like I said, but then it gives us a chance to be better. I’m really excited about him being here.”

Who is to say that type of scenario can’t happen again? We see hundreds of players choose to enter the transfer portal every offseason, looking for a better situation to continue their careers. A situation where they feel comfortable with the coaching staff, and know that they are wanted.

The Ducks lost out on Rushing this week, but they are in on several other 5-star players in the class of 2024. Guys like Brandon Baker, or Aydin Breland; Justin Williams, Williams Nwaneri, Colin Simmons, Koble Black, KJ Bolden. The list of 5-star players that Dan Lanning is recruiting and developing great relationships with is endless.

Will all of those players end up in Eugene? Absolutely not. Will a couple? Hopefully.

But for the guys who end up choosing to commit elsewhere and start their career in a place where they feel more comfortable, be it close to home or with a coaching staff that they admire, don’t admonish them. These kids are making a difficult decision based on the information that they have, and trying to do what they feel is best for them.

If it doesn’t work out in a year or two, they have the opportunity to enter the transfer portal and again do what they feel is best for them. Should that happen, Lanning and the Ducks have the relationship already established, and a place for them to land.

It’s certainly not better than getting the commitment from a 5-star player the first time around, but if you’re looking for a silver lining in a frustrating situation, it’s there.

College football recruiting: Five-star edge defender stays home

Not surprising but certainly still newsworthy.

Five-star edge defender [autotag]Elijah Rushing[/autotag] of Salpointe Catholic in Arizona is staying home. The elite 2024 prospect announced Thursday that he’ll play his college football at Arizona.

Rushing visited Notre Dame in June, but the Irish fell short to Arizona and seemed significantly behind Oregon as well.

For Arizona, it’s the program’s first five-star talent in the time 247Sports has been tracking such matters (2000). Rushing is ranked as the eighth overall player in the 2024 class according to the outlet.

For Notre Dame, its more of the same story: The Irish again play bridesmaid but not the bride for a five-star defensive talent.

Notre Dame has 20 commitments in the 2024 class.

5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing spurns Oregon, commits to Arizona

BREAKING: 5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing spurns Oregon, commits to Arizona

A week ago, not many Oregon Duck fans would believe you if you told them that 5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing would commit to the Arizona Wildcats over them. A month before that, the reaction would be the same. Heck, even a year ago, that would have been hard to believe.

Rushing has long been thought to be a heavy Oregon lean. In the end, though, the 5-star ended up committing to the hometown Wildcats on Thursday afternoon, throwing a wrench in the Ducks’ 2024 class.

Rushing is rated as the No. 8 overall player in the cycle, and the No. 1 EDGE in the nation. He had taken numerous visits to Oregon over the past years, but a late push from Arizona was able to sway things in their direction.

Notre Dame football: Today is the day for five-star Elijah Rushing

A five-star defender from a catholic high school is set to announce his decision. I feel like we’ve heard this story once already this week.

Today is the day for five-star defensive end [autotag]Elijah Rushing[/autotag] to make his college choice known.  The elite talent from Salpointe Catholic in Arizona traveled to take an official visit to Notre Dame in June and the Irish are a finalist for his commitment.

Notre Dame landing him however would likely feel like Ohio State fans felt when [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag] announced his commitment this past weekend.  The Irish have a seat at the table but in complete transparency, nobody is looking at them as a realistic threat at this point.

Rushing has been linked to a few west coast programs with Arizona gaining significant steam of late.  Oregon has been a favorite here but according to those in the know it doesn’t look like the Ducks will finish this one off.

Rushing will announce his commitment at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.  Along with Arizona, Notre Dame, and Oregon, Tennessee also has a seat on the table.

Here’s hoping for the best but expecting more of the same regarding Notre Dame recruiting today.

4-star LB trending away from Ducks ahead of Friday commitment

4-star LB trending away from Ducks ahead of Friday commitment

The Oregon Ducks have been trending in the first direction to land 4-star linebacker Dylan Williams for the past several months, ever since he decommitted from USC.

With his scheduled commitment coming a day from now, it seemed as if Dan Lanning and the Ducks were in a great position to add to their top-10 ranked 2024 recruiting class.

That no longer seems to be the case.

On Thursday morning, a pair of Crystal Ball predictions on 247Sports came in from Michigan State Spartans insiders Corey Robinson and Justin Thind, both of whom think that Williams will end up in East Lansing. 247Sports Director of Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong still has a prediction in for Williams to land with Oregon, but that was made back in June.

Williams is rated as the No. 17 LB in the 2024 class, and the No. 181 player overall.

The potential shift for Williams comes at a tough time for the Ducks, who have also seemingly lost their stranglehold on 5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing and his commitment, which is scheduled for Thursday afternoon. While Oregon has long been thought to be the favorite to land Rushing, a slew of predictions came in on Wednesday that show he will more likely end up at Arizona, rather than in Eugene.

In the end, we will see how the Ducks can close on both of these top recruits.

Notre Dame trending the wrong way with 5-star Arizona defensive end

Sigh…

It’s an understatement to say that [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] is having a rough last two weeks on the recruiting trail.

There was a chance for the Irish to wash away their bad mojo with 5-star Arizona defensive end [autotag]Elijah Rushing[/autotag]. The 6-foot, 5-inch and 251 pound player is set to make his verbal commitment tomorrow, but it’s looking like he won’t be selecting Notre Dame.

Rushing took an official visit to South Bend in early June and the Irish made a solid impression. However, the 3rd ranked edge and 27th overall prospect according to the 247Sports composite has their director of recruiting, Steve Wiltfong, believing that Arizona is now the team to beat.

The Irish really needed another impact defensive lineman to pair with commit [autotag]Loghan Thomas[/autotag] for their 2024 recruiting class, but has yet to find one. This isn’t a knock on the other commits [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag], [autotag]Sean Sevillano Jr.[/autotag], or [autotag]Cole Mullins[/autotag], it’s just that they most likely aren’t prospects who will see the field immediately for the Irish.

It looks like the search will continue for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and his coaching staff.
