Seahawks elevate running back Alex Collins from practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks have elevated running back Alex Collins from the practice squad ahead of the wild-card matchup against the Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks announced a roster move on Friday afternoon ahead of the team’s scheduled wild-card matchup against the Los Angeles Rams set for this weekend at Lumen Field.

Seattle has elevated running back Alex Collins from the practice squad to the active roster. This move comes on the heels of the news that running back Rashaad Penny has been recently added to the injury report as questionable with a knee injury.

Collins, who scored a touchdown in Week 17 in the Seahawks’ win over the 49ers, will add depth at the position should Penny be unable to go on Saturday.

Lions activate Everson Griffen to 53-man roster, elevate CB Tramaine Brock and C Evan Brown

Detroit Lions activate EDGE Everson Griffen to the 53-man roster, elevate corner Tramaine Brock and center Evan Brown for Week 16.

Happy holidays!

Detroit Lions announced that they have activated EDGE Everson Griffen to the 53-man roster, and elevated two practice squad players for Week 16: corner Tramaine Brock and center Evan Brown.

After contracting the COVID-19 virus, Griffen spent nearly two weeks on the reserve list before being cleared to return to practice on Wednesday. Because of the return to action protocols surrounding COVID-19, Griffen had a commissioner’s permission roster exemption while he re-acclimated back to football and did not count against the 53-man roster.

In order for him to be eligible to play on Saturday, he needed to be activated to the 53-man roster (which is today’s move) and a corresponding move would be required —  which the Lions created by releasing running back Jonathan Williams yesterday.

With corner Darryl Roberts questionable to play, the Lions only had three healthy corners: Amani Oruwariye, Justin Coleman, and Mike Ford — who was injured all week but doesn’t carry an injury designation into this game.

Brock gives them a fifth option at corner, depth on special teams, and insurance against Roberts’ injury.

Ragnow is still mending his fractured throat, and despite a limited practice on Thursday, he remains questionable to play. Joe Dahl replaced Ragnow in the starting lineup last week, but the elevation of Brown gives the Lions a true center option in case of further injury.

Lions elevated C Marcus Martin, EDGE Kareem Martin, and CB Alex Myers for Week 15

The Detroit Lions announced that they have elevated center Marcus Martin, EDGE Kareem Martin, and corner Alex Myers for their Week 15 matchup with the Tennessee Titans.

The Detroit Lions announced that they have elevated center Marcus Martin, EDGE Kareem Martin, and corner Alex Myers for their Week 15 matchup with the Tennessee Titans.

With Frank Ragnow being downgraded to out this week the Lions lacked a true center on their roster but the elevation of Marcus Martin gives them one.

Starting left guard Jonah Jackson has experience playing center in college, and former starting guard Joe Dahl has been cross-trained at center since he arrived in Detroit in 2016. Expect both of them to start at left guard and center — though it’s not entirely clear who plays where — with Marcus Martin acting as the primary backup under center.

With Everson Griffen still on the COVID-19 list, Kareem Martin will give the Lions depth on the edge. Last week the Lions started EDGE Romeo Okwara and a combination of EDGE Austin Bryant and JACK linebacker Christian Jones, with Kareem Martin filling in as a fourth option. Expect that to repeat itself again in Week 15.

After the Lions signed 11-year veteran corner Tramaine Brock earlier in the week, most expected him to be elevated to the depleted cornerbacks’ group, but the Lions opted for Myers, who they signed two and a half weeks ago, as their fourth option.

Undrafted out of Houston in 2019, Myers (5-11, 187) spent his rookie season on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad before being released earlier this year. A physical tackler, Myers has a chance to make an impact on special teams in this game.

Detroit Lions elevate 3 practice squad players for their Week 14 game against the Packers

The Detroit Lions have elevated three members of their practice squad for their Week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers: Offensive tackle Dan Skipper, defensive end Kareem Martin, and safety/gunner Bobby Price.

The Detroit Lions have elevated three members of their practice squad for their Week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers: Offensive tackle Dan Skipper, defensive end Kareem Martin, and safety/gunner Bobby Price.

Typically, the Lions would only be able to elevate two players under the standard elevation addendum, but with Everson Griffen being placed on the COVID-19 list, the Lions are able to elevate a third player as a replacement.

With Tyrell Crosby being ruled out and Hal Vaitai on injured reserve, the Lions have turned to Matt Nelson at right tackle. With Joe Dahl as the only remaining player with tackle experience on the active roster, Skipper is being elevated as insurance against any further injuries at the position.

With a plethora of injuries amongst the Lions EDGE rushers, Martin is being called up for depth. While Romeo Okwara is healthy, the Lions are down Trey Flowers (IR), Griffen (COVID-19), and Julian Okwara (IR).

When the Lions deploy four down defensive lineman, they will most likely hope to turn to Da’Shawn Hand and/or Austin Bryant opposite Okwara, with Martin potentially being the fourth option. But both Hand and Bryant are listed as questionable this week and neither has played in three games, meaning Martin could find himself on the field fairly quickly.

Because of this uncertainty, the Lions may rely on their linebackers to fill an EDGE role and that would mean leaning on Jahlani Tavai, Christian Jones, and Reggie Ragland at the JACK linebacker role more.

Price was elevated last week and played on 19 special teams snaps, including as a starting gunner. With C.J. Moore questionable after injuring his ankle last week, Price should help soften Moore’s workload.

Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde and Benson Mayowa downgraded to out Week 10

The Seattle Seahawks announced a flurry of roster moves Saturday afternoon ahead of the Week-10 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Seattle Seahawks announced a flurry of roster moves Saturday afternoon ahead of the Week-10 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

Running backs Chris Carson (foot) and Carlos Hyde (hamstring) and defensive end Benson Mayowa (ankle) have been downgraded to out for Sunday’s game. All three had been listed on Friday’s injury report as questionable.

Carson, Hyde and Mayowa now join center Ethan Pocic (concussion), cornerback Shaquill Griffin (concussion/hamstring), cornerback Quinton Dunbar (knee) and defensive tackle Brian Mone (ankle) who had already been ruled out for Week 10.

In addition, Seattle place Mone on the injured reserve and activated cornerback Neiko Thorpe to the active roster.

Finally, the Seahawks promoted running back Alex Collins and defensive tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison from the practice squad.

Kickoff in Los Angeles is set for 1:25 p.m. PT Sunday afternoon.

Detroit Lions will not elevate any practice squad players for Week 4

With their roster getting healthier every day, the Detroit Lions have elected to not elevate any practice squad players for their Week 4 matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

With their roster getting healthier every day, the Detroit Lions have elected to not elevate any practice squad players for their Week 4 matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

This is the second week in a row that the Lions have opted to keep their active roster at 53-players. And like last week, as long as the Lions keep eight offensive linemen active on their game roster they can expand their game roster to 48-players — meaning they would only need to declare five of their 53-players inactive, instead of the traditional seven.

Inactives will vary from week-to-week depending on the matchup, but if we look back at last week’s inactive and this week’s injury report we see some crossover.

Safety C.J. Moore has already been ruled OUT this week with a groin injury and will be included as one of the five inactive players. Rookie tight end Hunter Bryant was ruled out last week and is currently listed as questionable on this week’s report, he will likely be a game-time decision. Desmond Trufant was also out last week and listed as questionable this week, but he is expected to play and start on Sunday. Other players listed as questionable this week include Da’Shawn Hand, Christian Jones, Darryl Roberts.

Rookie guard Logan Stenberg was a healthy scratch last week, and with the rest of the offensive line healthy, he looks like the ninth offensive linemen on the depth chart once again. The fifth player on last week’s inactive list was Ty Johnson, but he was released earlier in the week and claimed by the New York Jets.

The Lions will announce their inactive list at 11:30 a.m. EST on Sunday.

Detroit Lions will not elevate any practice squad players for Week 3

The Detroit Lions will not elevate any practice squad players to the active roster for their Week 3 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.

A new rule was put in place this season, allows teams to elevate up to two players from the practice squad each week, expanding the team’s active roster from 53- to 55-players on game day.

But with a moderately healthy roster this week, the Detroit Lions have elected to not elevate any players from the practice squad for their Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals and will enter the game with 53-players on their roster.

Another new rule this offseason is an expanded game-day roster, increasing it from 46- to 48-players, as long as eight offensive linemen are active. The Lions currently have nine healthy offensive linemen, therefore as long as they keep at least eight of them active for game-day, they can expand to 48-players on Sunday.

So, with 48-players allowed and 53-players on the roster, the Lions will only need to name five players inactive this week, instead of the traditional seven.

With Hunter Bryant ruled out on Friday’s injury report, and Desmond Trufant downgraded to out on Saturday, that means the Lions only need to declare three more players inactive.

Kenny Golladay (hamstring) and Hal Vaitai (foot) are both listed as questionable and could be game-time decisions — though most expect them to start barring any issues during pre-game warmups.

C.J. Moore (groin) is also listed as questionable, and with his injury coming mid-week, he is much closer to a 50/50 decision than Golladay or Vaitai.

Of note: last week, EDGE Julian Okwara and CB Chris Jones were both healthy scratches, but with a new opponent on the schedule the Lions may opt to make some changes to their healthy scratches in Arizona.

Lions elevate Kevin Strong and Dee Virgin to the active roster for Week 2

The Detroit Lions announced they have elevated defensive tackle Kevin Strong and cornerback Dee Virgin to the active roster for Week 2.

The Detroit Lions are once again taking advantage of the new practice squad rules for 2020 and have elevated defensive tackle Kevin Strong and corner/gunner Dee Virgin from the practice squad to the active roster for their Week 2 game against the Green Bay Packers.

The new rule allows the team to elevated up to two players from the practice squad each week, expanding the team’s active roster from 53- to 55-players on game day. At midnight the day of the Lions game, the players will revert back to the Lions practice squad — as long as the player has not been elevated two other times this season, they will not have to go through the waivers process.

With Nick Williams being downgraded to out for this week’s matchup, the Lions need depth on the defensive line and Strong has experience in this scheme after making the 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent in 2019.

Virgin being promoted gives the Lions depth at the corner position as well as a starting gunner. Last week, Darryl Roberts was starting at gunner opposite Tony McRae, but he is nursing a calf injury — is listed as questionable for this game — and potentially taking over the starting slot corner role. So it would make sense for the Lions to shift Roberts’ gunner responsibilities over to Virgin, who held that role the previous two seasons.
