The Kansas City Chiefs have officially activated OL Kyle Long from the Reserve/PUP list according to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday.

Long, 32, signed with the Chiefs out of retirement this past offseason on a one-year deal. The former Chicago Bears draft pick didn’t play in 2020 as he rehabbed from a series of injuries suffered in 2019. Just as he was hitting his stride and getting into the swing of things with Kansas City, Long suffered a knee injury during OTAs. That injury sidelined him throughout training camp and ultimately landed him on the Reserve/PUP list.

Today was the deadline for the Chiefs to activate Long after the team opened his practice window back on November 9th. He practiced for two weeks and then had the bye week off, but the training staff got a good look at him in that span. If the team hadn’t chosen to activate Long today, he’d be out for the remainder of the season without playing a snap for Kansas City.

So what’s next for Long and the Chiefs? At the time of his injury, Long was the starting right guard for the team. That position is currently locked down by rookie Trey Smith, so it’s unlikely that he resumes a starting role at that position. It’s possible that Kansas City gives Long a look at the right tackle spot, but with the bye week, Lucas Niang could be healthy enough to resume his role as a starter.

The most likely scenario is that the Chiefs keep Long on the bench for the time being. They’ll have him available as valuable depth for the stretch run in the final six games of the regular season and into the playoffs. You never know when injury can strike, so having the veteran available to fill in should be advantageous for Kansas City.

In order to make room for Long, the team placed both RB Jerick McKinnon and DT Khalen Saunders on injured reserve. McKinnon suffered a hamstring injury on the opening kickoff against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 11. Saunders has been dealing with a knee issue since Week 7.

Seahawks put Shell, Randall on COVID-19 list, activate Flowers from IR

The Seattle Seahawks have placed Brandon Shell and Damarious Randall on the COVID-19 list and activated Tre Flowers from injured reserve.

The Seattle Seahawks executed a number of roster moves ahead of their regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17.

First, the Seahawks announced tackle Brandon Shell and safety Damarious Randall have been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Shell was added to Friday’s injury report after a “close contact” situation but has tested negative for the coronavirus. No details were given regarding Randall’s status at this time.

In addition to Shell and Randall to the COVID-19 list, Seattle has also activated cornerback Tre Flowers from injured reserve back to the 53-man roster after recovering from a hamstring injury.

“He’s ready to go,” Carroll said Friday. “He had a great week of practice and he’s ready to play.”

Further, the Seahawks have elevated three players from the practice squad: running back Alex Collins, wide receiver Penny Hart and guard Alex Boone. Collins and Hart count as COVID-19 roster replacements and Boone as a standard practice squad elevation.

Finally, running back Carlos Hyde has officially been ruled out for Week 17 with an illness.

Lions activate Everson Griffen to 53-man roster, elevate CB Tramaine Brock and C Evan Brown

Detroit Lions activate EDGE Everson Griffen to the 53-man roster, elevate corner Tramaine Brock and center Evan Brown for Week 16.

Happy holidays!

Detroit Lions announced that they have activated EDGE Everson Griffen to the 53-man roster, and elevated two practice squad players for Week 16: corner Tramaine Brock and center Evan Brown.

After contracting the COVID-19 virus, Griffen spent nearly two weeks on the reserve list before being cleared to return to practice on Wednesday. Because of the return to action protocols surrounding COVID-19, Griffen had a commissioner’s permission roster exemption while he re-acclimated back to football and did not count against the 53-man roster.

In order for him to be eligible to play on Saturday, he needed to be activated to the 53-man roster (which is today’s move) and a corresponding move would be required —  which the Lions created by releasing running back Jonathan Williams yesterday.

With corner Darryl Roberts questionable to play, the Lions only had three healthy corners: Amani Oruwariye, Justin Coleman, and Mike Ford — who was injured all week but doesn’t carry an injury designation into this game.

Brock gives them a fifth option at corner, depth on special teams, and insurance against Roberts’ injury.

Ragnow is still mending his fractured throat, and despite a limited practice on Thursday, he remains questionable to play. Joe Dahl replaced Ragnow in the starting lineup last week, but the elevation of Brown gives the Lions a true center option in case of further injury.

Detroit Lions place Tony McRae on IR, activate Jarrad Davis from reserve/COVID-19

The Detroit Lions announced they have placed starting gunner Tony McRae on injured reserve and activated Jarrad Davis from reserve/COVID-19.

The Detroit Lions announced they have placed starting gunner/corner Tony McRae on injured reserve and activated linebacker Jarrad Davis from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

McRae’s knee injury is significant enough that the Lions placed him on the long-term injured reserve, meaning he will not return this season. With him being on a one-year contract and the front office/coaching staff walking on thin ice, his future with the team is not clear at this time.

He does have a few things working in his favor that could lead to a second contract with the Lions. McRae found his way to Detroit, following special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs — who the Lions would be nuts to move on from — and the pair have solid chemistry.

While Coombs has rotated gunners this season, McRae has been the only constant, playing every gunner snap available ahead of his injury — 28 of his 121 special teams snaps.

On Sunday, McRae was replaced by Justin Coleman while Mike Ford was opposite him replacing Jamal Agnew. Between the three, two will likely emerge as gunners moving forward.

Davis will rejoin the Lions six days after it was announced he was being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, indicating like Matthew Stafford, he was likely in the high-risk close contact category, is symptom-free, and has passed the appropriate amount of tests with negative results.

Tight end Ed Dickson should be activated with Luke Willson injured

With tight end Luke Willson now out with a hamstring injury, Seattle Seahawks will likely activate Ed Dickson back to the 53-man roster.

The Seattle Seahawks just continue to suffer injuries at the tight end position. In Week 10 against the San Francisco 49ers, Luke Willson left the game with a hamstring injury and was unable to return leaving Jacob Hollister as the team’s only true tight end on the roster.

Willson had been battling a rib injury heading into the contest.

“Luke’s got a legit hamstring – legit meaning that it’s not just a little cramp or something,” coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday after Willson had been further evaluated. “It showed up in the MRI testing of it. But it might be a couple weeks for him, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

With Willson potentially out for the near future, the Seahawks will look to tight end Ed Dickson for additional support at the spot. Dickson, who is now eligible to be activated back from the injured reserve, should be healthy to play.

“Yes, he’s ready to go,” Carroll confirmed. “Fortunately, if Luke is unable to play then we would like to think we can go right to Ed and get him going.”

Dickson has been able to practice with the team but must be added back to the 53-man roster before he can make his 2019 season debut.
