On Friday, the Texas/OU rivalry was put to the side. Baker Mayfield reached out to Sam Ehlinger after the tragic death of Jake Ehlinger.
Nobody loves to trash talk the University of Texas more than former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. The former Heisman Trophy winner went 2-1 in the Red River Shootout and took the game personally.
On Thursday evening, the heated rivalry was put to the side. Mayfield played high school football in the Austin area before playing in Norman.
Brian Davis of the Austin American Stateman was the first to report on the tragic death of Texas linebacker Jake Ehlinger. Jake was the younger brother of former Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Both were a part of the program over the past two years.
Mayfield reached out to Sam via Twitter, saying “prayers up for you and your family man, @sehlinger3. Extremely sorry for your loss. City of Austin is here for y’all.”

Mayfield and Sam Ehlinger’s on-the-field rivalry goes past Texas-Oklahoma. The two went to rival high schools within the city of Austin. Mayfield went to Lake Travis while the Ehlinger brothers went to Westlake.
At the end of the day, football rivalries mean little to none compared to off-the-field events. Seeing such a prominent figure from Oklahoma like Mayfield speaks to how everyone respects each other.

Tragic news from the Forty Acres on Thursday. Texas Longhorns linebacker Jake Ehlinger has been found dead. His body was discovered in an off-campus location on Thursday afternoon according to a report from Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman.

Ehlinger, the 20-year-old younger brother of Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger, was about to enter his third season at Texas but did not play the last two seasons. Jake was preparing to go into his junior season with the possibility of getting his first playing time for the Longhorns.
A 911 call was placed in the middle of the day at 12:18 pm, where police arrived at the corner of the 1200 block of West 22nd Street. No cause of death has yet been disclosed, and his death has not been considered suspicious.
Jake has been part of the program with Sam the last two seasons where they were often seen standing together on the Texas sidelines during games. A strong, brotherly bond that fed off one another during their time together.
He was seen celebrating with big brother Sam and loved ones after the Indianapolis Colts drafted Ehlinger this past Saturday.

The Locked on Longhorns Podcast returns for a victory Monday following a 59-3 victory over the UTEP Miners. Sam Ehlinger got off to a hot start in this one from the first play. He found Joshua Moore on a 78-yard catch and run to get the party started for the Texas offense. In his first game with Mike Yurcich calling the plays, Sam set career highs in yards and touchdowns in one half. How much better can Ehlinger be in 2020?

The Walter Camp Foundation named Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger the Offensive Player of the Week. He had a monster night in Austin.
Saturday was a big night for Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Some feel that he can put on a Heisman worthy campaign this year and it was off to a roaring start. So much so that he was named Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.

The 426 yards passing and five touchdown passes were both career highs for the senior from Austin, Texas. Which says a lot about the new offensive scheme under Mike Yurcich since Ehlinger did most of that damage in the first half while building a 45-3 lead.
This marked the second time in Ehlinger’s career that he was named Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week. The last time it came when Ehlinger led the Longhorns offense to 386 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in their 48-45 win over Oklahoma.
According to the release by Texas Athletics, Ehlinger is the second Big 12 quarterback to throw for 420 yards and five touchdowns in an opening week win. Will Grier (WVU) was the last to do it in 2018. Ehlinger could be in store for big things this year, with how the offense looked in week one.
Next up for Ehlinger and the offense is Texas Tech on Sept. 26. The Red Raiders defense was torched by Houston Baptist to the tune of 572 passing yards and 600 yards of total offense. HBU had three receivers go for 100 yards or more. Which included Caden Sterns’ younger brothers. Josh and Jerreth combined for 17 receptions for 339 yards and three touchdowns.
If Yurcich keeps with the same style of gameplan versus Tech, look for Ehlinger to put up monster numbers again in two weeks.

Senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger wanted to come out and set the tone on the season. He did that and more. Ehlinger got the night started off with a 78-yard catch and run on a slant to Joshua Moore. If you blinked in the first few minutes, you missed a lot of offense from Texas. They led 21-0 after the first quarter.
Sam would finish out the first half with 429 yards passing. They was not only his career high but the highest of any Texas quarterback in history. His five touchdowns were the most for any first half performance since Vince Young. The start of the Ehlinger-Mike Yurcich campaign is off to a hot start in Austin.

Ehlinger was able to find different targets for every single touchdown throw. The graduate transfers also paying dividends in Tarik Black and Brendan Schooler. Add in Kai Money, tight end Cade Brewer and Joshua Moore. Due to the fact they lost Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson to the NFL, they were looking for a way to replace that production.
