NCAA Tournament: Hot shooting Texas cruises past Colgate 81-61

Texas took care of business in round one of the NCAA Tournament.

Texas is moving on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after taking down Colgate 81-61 on Thursday.

Colgate entered the game as the top three-point shooting team in the nation, but it was Texas who thrived behind the arc in this ballgame.

The Longhorns shot 13-23 from three and 54% from the field. Texas’ defense did a great job keeping Colgate from getting good looks, holding the Raiders to 3-15 from deep.

Texas’ guards came to play from the jump. Sir’Jabari Rice made a season-high seven three-pointers in a 23-point effort, while Marcus Carr added four threes of his own.

Dylan Disu turned in another efficient performance, backing up his Big 12 Tournament MVP. The Texas big man scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win.

Up next for Texas is a second round matchup against the winner between Texas A&M and Penn State. The Longhorns are looking to advance past the first weekend of March Madness for the first time since 2008.

Texas forward Timmy Allen discusses team-first mentality

Texas basketball players don’t care who gets the credit as they move toward their goals.

It’s all about the team for Texas basketball players heading into the NCAA Tournament. These Longhorns aren’t concerned so much with who makes the game-deciding play as they are that the team wins.

Texas forward Timmy Allen said as much in his media availability ahead of the NCAA Tournament.

It’s just amazing to watch them… the camaraderie we have, the selflessness and how we’re not worried about who gets it done. It’s just about getting it done.

Allen’s team-first mentality is apparent to anyone who saw the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City. Multiple times the camera panned to Allen rooting on his team to a Big 12 Tournament Championship. Now he’ll get to make an impact on the court.

What makes Texas so dangerous is its ability to make baskets through multiple avenues. Dylan Disu has seemingly been automatic at times in mid-range baskets. Sir’Jabari Rice has been the Longhorns most reliable three-point shooter in awhile. Allen and Marcus Carr add in baskets in their own variety of ways.

Texas will lean on its four-headed monster for baskets as it makes a push for a deep tournament run.

Five reasons Texas HC Rodney Terry will be assessed on March success

We look at why we’ll assess Terry’s coaching job on what he does in the NCAA Tournament.

We’re a day away from Texas head coach Rodney Terry’s biggest slate of games. For the Longhorns’ acting head coach, the task is simple and straightforward: Get to the second weekend.

Terry and the Texas Longhorns (26-8) face the Colgate Raiders (26-8) in what could be a sharp-shooting contest from the outside. To date, the game is the most important event of the season for the 2022-23 squad.

Everything the team has done to this point is important. Taking care of business in high profile games and in the conference tournament sets the Longhorns up for a manageable tournament path. That said, the team needs to capitalize or there will likely be changes.

If Terry and company beat Colgate and the winner of Texas A&M/Penn State, the administration can’t ignore what the coaching staff has accomplished. If they can’t make it out of the weekend, the athletic department might reconsider who leads the team.

Here are a few reasons why we’ll judge Terry’s coaching job on what he does in the NCAA Tournament.

NCAA Tournament: Texas vs. Colgate preview and predictions

Texas presents matchup problems against Colgate’s defense.

Texas is set to take on Colgate in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday. The Longhorns look to fend off the upset-minded Raiders and advance to the Round of 32 for the second straight season.

Texas earned a No. 2 seed for the committee after a 26-8 season with a Big 12 tournament title under their belt. Colgate comes in with an identical 26-8 record as a No. 15 seed, champions of the Patriot League.

Colgate is more than capable of giving Texas a scare in this matchup. The Raiders are the best three-point shooting team in the tournament field, hitting at a 40% clip on the year.

The Raiders have multiple players that can score the basketball at a high level, with five players averaging double figures.

Texas’ athleticism in the frontcourt and experience at guard should be able to give a struggling Colgate defense fits. Marcus Carr leads the Longhorns offense as the facilitator, while Dylan Disu is coming on hot as of late.

Timmy Allen is back from injury to put the Longhorns at full strength entering March Madness.

LOOK: Texas basketball’s new jersey numbers revealed

A look at Texas’ new jersey numbers for the 2022-23 season.

Chris Beard had a busy offseason putting together his roster for the 2022-23 season. After winning Texas’ first NCAA tournament game since 2014, the Horns had to retool using the transfer portal and the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Landing Iowa State transfer Tyrese Hunter, the 2021-22 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, was a huge offseason splash for Texas. Sir’Jabari Rice brings in experience and solid defense from New Mexico State.

The Longhorns’ freshman class includes the five-star duo of Arterio Morris and Dillon Mitchell along with Rowan Brumbaugh and Alex Anamekwe. The talented group of newcomers hope to provide a shot in the arm for Texas’ basketball program.

Texas announced the new numbers for this year’s team on Tuesday morning. Returnees Marcus Carr and Dylan Disu are changing numbers from a season ago. Timmy Allen will rock No. 0 again this season.

Dylan Disu expected to withdraw from NBA draft, return to Texas

Big news for the Texas basketball program.

Chris Beard and the Texas Longhorns received positive news on Tuesday that forward Dylan Disu will return for another year. Continue reading “Dylan Disu expected to withdraw from NBA draft, return to Texas”

Three Longhorns declare for the 2022 NBA draft

Courtney Ramey, Andrew Joens and Dylan Disu will test NBA draft waters.

The outlook of Texas’ 2022-23 roster has started to take shape in the past couple of weeks with the addition of New Mexico State transfer Jarbai Rice and the return of Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr.

Texas is still waiting on a few more guys from last season’s squad to make a decision about their futures. Courtney Ramey, Andrew Jones and Dylan Disu all declared for the NBA draft this week, each will maintain collegiate eligibility for next season as they have not signed with an agent.

Ramey also decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal to keep all of his options open. He played in over 125 games for the Longhorns while averaging over 10 points per game. Ramey served as one of the best defensive players on the team over the past few seasons.

Jones just wrapped up his sixth season in Austin. He has averaged 12 points per game on 42% shooting in his Texas career. The senior was one of texas’ most consistent players down the stretch of the 2021-22 season.

Disu did not have the season he wanted after transferring in from Vanderbilt. He dealt with a lingering knee injury keeping him from playing at 100%. Another year of development in college could really serve him well if scouts believe he is not quite ready for the next level yet.

The three have until June 13 to withdraw from the NBA draft if they chose to do so.

WATCH: Texas F Dylan Disu posterizes two defenders

Dylan Disu with the SportsCenter Top-10!

While struggling to get any offense going early in Texas’ matchup against Alabama State, Texas forward Dylan Disu took it upon himself to get the Horns back into the game.

Disu took a Marcus Carr pass and charged in from beyond the arc to throw down a dunk over two Alabama State defenders, igniting the energy on Longhorns bench.

Disu is playing just his third game of the season after recovering from a knee injury he suffered at Vanderbilt a season ago. The forward averaged 15 points and 9.8 rebounds per game last year in the SEC.

Chris Beard believes Disu is a future NBA player who can help Texas break out of their offensive struggles.

Disu currently leads the Texas team with eight points as they try to erase an early deficit.

No. 17 Texas takes down Stanford 60-53 in Las Vegas

No. 17 Texas charges past Stanford behind big days from Jones and Allen.

It is better to win ugly than to lose pretty and that is exactly what Texas did on Sunday against the Stanford Cardinal.

For the first 17 minutes of the game, the Longhorns and Cardinal showed very little separation. Texas then put their foot on the gas to close out the half up 34-27.

The Horns kept that momentum and came out of halftime firing. Texas took advantage of a few turnovers to go on a 13-0 run, taking a commanding lead into the 10-minute mark.

Stanford clawed back into the game as Texas went on a six-minute scoring drought.

Texas held on to win 60-53 despite the late surge from Stanford.

The story of the game was the turnovers. Texas played aggressively on defense and it showed as they forced 22 Standford turnovers. While the Texas guards did not light it up in the box score, they did a good job of playing clean basketball and limiting turnovers of their own.

Key stats:

  • G Andrew Jones: 13 points, four rebounds
  • F Timmy Allen: 11 points, five rebounds and three steals
  • F Dylan Disu: 11 points, four rebounds
  • Team: 22 forced turnovers

Texas will have two more games before entering Big 12 conference play against West Virginia on New Years Day.

Texas Basketball: F Dylan Disu has been medically cleared to play

Very encouraging injury news for Texas basketball.

No. 17 Texas was as active as anyone in the transfer portal during Chris Beard’s first offseason as the head coach.

One of the seven transfers that the Longhorns brought in was former Vanderbilt forward Dylan Disu.

Disu has missed the first eight games of the season up to this point while nursing a knee injury he suffered in February of last year.

The Longhorns and Disu received good news on Tuesday as the forward has been medically cleared to return to play ahead of Texas’ matchup with Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Disu could provide a spark to Chris Beard’s squad before conference play. Last season at Vanderbilt, he averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds per game in his 17 starts before the injury.

Expect Beard to keep Disu on a minutes restriction as Texas eases him into the frontcourt rotation alongside Timmy Allen, Tre Mitchell and Christian Bishop.

Texas will look to bounce back on Tuesday night against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Longhorn Network.
