Nick Saban confirms Drew Sanders is out for Mississippi State

Nick Saban said Drew Sanders is practicing but is not fully ready for game action yet.

Problems at the outside linebacker position across from Will Anderson have continued. After Christopher Allen went down with a foot injury for the season, Drew Sanders was supposed to be the one to step up as the replacement.

Now, Alabama will be without the sophomore for the second consecutive week. Sanders is dealing with a hand injury. Nick Saban said he is practicing but is not fully ready for game action yet.

“He’s out there in pads every day but it’s not safe for him to use his hand yet,” said Saban. So he’s not going to play this week.”

With an injury like a hand, being able to lightly practice is possible. Going full contact is where Sanders would be limited, especially at an important position on the edge.

Going into Texas A&M, Saban said Sanders was going to be “game-to-game for a few weeks.” All we can do now is wait for next week’s injury report heading into Tennessee.

Freshman Dallas Turner and sophomore Chris Braswell are still expected to pick up for the injured Sanders. The former was able to record five tackles and one tackle for loss against the Aggies.

Mississippi State will provide a different gameplan, though, with some more rotation from Turner. With how often Mike Leach is going to air it out, the pass rush will need to be subbing in and out for all four quarters. Turner may be the main guy but Braswell will get opportunities.

Grading Alabama’s defensive position groups at the halfway point

Let’s look at how the Alabama defensive position units have graded out at the halfway point of the season!

Unfortunately, we are already at the halfway point of the college football season. After last week’s loss to Texas A&M, Alabama sits at No. 5 in the country with a 5-1 record.

Since we have made it to the halfway point, it is time to give a midseason grade to each of the position groups. Yesterday we looked at the offensive position groups. Today we will look at the defensive position groups! Let’s get started!

Defensive Line B-

This group has been a little disappointing this season, but they have not been bad by any stretch of the imagination. Only one guy has been a consistent force on the defensive line for Alabama and that is Phidarian Mathis.

Mathis has racked up 3.5 sacks through the halfway point, which is a very solid number for an interior defensive lineman.

Some of the players such as Justin Eboigbe, DJ Dale, Byron Young, and even Tim Smith need to become more consistent players for the Tide.

Outside Linebackers A

Will Anderson has been an absolute animal for the Alabama defense. Anderon has three sacks on the season but is also third in the country in tackles for loss with 11.

Unfortunately, injuries have plagued the outside linebacker position opposite of Anderson. Christopher Allen’s season was cut short in the opener against Miami so Drew Sanders replaced the talented Allen. Then against Ole Miss, Sanders suffered a hand injury and is now week-to-week so to speak.

True freshman Dallas Turner has stepped up in the absence of Sanders and is doing a pretty good job.

The outside linebackers have been the most positive group along the defense this season.

Inside Linebackers C+

The lofty expectations for the Alabama defense heading into the 2021 season had a lot to do with the pair of inside linebackers that Alabama would have in Christian Harris and Henry To’oT’o.

Now that we are at the halfway point, it is safe to say those two players have not lived up to expectations. Now don’t get me wrong, they have flashed how great they can, but they both have also missed tackles and missed assignments. And they are both better than what they played so far.

Let’s see if they can turn this around in the second half of the season.

Cornerbacks B+

This group, much like the outside linebacker group, has really played pretty consistently all season. Josh Jobe has had the occasional penalty, but if we are being honest, in the pass and flag happy world in which college football is played, some penalties are to be expected.

Jalyn Armour-Davis has maybe been the surprise player of the season for the Tide. He is always in position and if he doesn’t make a play on the ball, he brings the receiver down quickly with no yards after the catch.

We have also seen the backups get a start this season in Kool-Aid McKinstry and Marcs Banks and they have proven to be valuable depth at the cornerback position.

Safeties / Stars C+

It is a common theme among the Alabama defense this season, the word inconsistent. Alabama returned plenty of experience in the back end of the defense and for whatever reason, they have simply not performed to their capabilities.

Jordan Battle isn’t an elite safety, he’s just steady. DeMarcco Hellams is constantly caught out of position and displays poor open-field tackling. Then you have Malachi Moore and Brian Branch who have yet to make a splash play from the star position.

The season is only half over, so that means there is plenty of time for each position group to correct its mistakes and get back to the Alabama defensive standard.

Alabama to be without LB Drew Sanders for Texas A&M

Another injury blow for Alabama’s defense.

When Chris Allen went down with an injury, Nick Saban had to turn to youth at the fourth linebacker position. Sophomore Drew Sanders stepped in and was performing nicely.

Now, another replacement is going to be needed as Sanders is going to be missing some time thanks to an injury.

“He has a hand injury,” Saban said. “It required surgery. It was a little, maybe, worse than we thought. So he’s gonna be game-to-game for a few weeks, so we’ll just have to see how it goes.”

Sanders was able to play against Ole Miss, recording five tackles and two quarterback hurries. He was spotted with a cast on Saturday, mainly around his right thumb.

Now, Alabama will be moving onto the third-string SAM. True freshman and former five-star Dallas Turner or redshirt freshman and former five-star Chris Braswell are expected to take over.

“They don’t have a lot of experience,” Saban said. “That’s two starters at the same position that we’ve lost. But Dallas Turner is a good young player, and he’s probably gonna get more opportunity, as well as Chris Braswell, at that position, and those guys have played some. But they’re obviously gonna get more opportunity now.”

Between Turner and Braswell, the two have combined for 12 tackles this season. They’ll be thrown into the ring at College Station, needing to perform in a big way for Alabama.

It’s easy to say “just throw the next five-star guy out there,” and on paper, this is true. But playing an underclassman who has little experience, even in practice, is a different ball game.

Both players will have to adapt quickly against Texas A&M’s offensive before Sanders is back in the lineup in a few weeks.

Six Tide players earn weekly honors after win over Mercer

Six Tide players earn weekly honors after win over Mercer

No. 1 Alabama was able to handle the Mercer Bears last Saturday 48-14. The Alabama coaching staff recognized a total of six players after the victory as their “Players of the Week”. Two offensive players, three defensive players, and one special teams contributor were recognized by the staff.

OFFENSE

This week’s offensive players of the week were freshman wide receiver JoJo Earle and junior offensive tackle Evan Neal. Earle recorded a team-high seven receptions for 85 yards. Neal earned the highest grade of any offensive lineman for the Tide and was perfect on all his assignments while recording four knockdown blocks.

DEFENSE

The Alabama coaching staff recognized three defenders after the Mercer win in Christian Harris, Kool-Aid McKinstry, and Drew Sanders. Harris led the team in tackles with eight. In his first start, McKinstry recorded one interception while also being credited with another pass breakup. Sanders was also making his first career start and he was able to record two tackles and two pass breakups.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Sophomore running back Jase McClellan was awarded special teams player of the week after scoring on a punt block in the first half against Mercer. McClellan also added a pair of tackles on special teams.

Alabama LB Chris Allen likely out for season with foot injury, replacement named

Chris Allen will undergo foot surgery, Saban names his replacement

Alabama walked away from their season-opening contest against No. 14 Miami a winner, but they lost a vital piece of the defense: redshirt senior linebacker, Chris Allen.

Allen went down in the second quarter and left the field, not returning for the remainder of the game.

Today, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban spoke to the media and made Allen’s inability to return for the rest of the season official. He suffered a fracture in his foot and will require surgery.

When Allen left the game, sophomore Drew Sanders came in as his replacement and finished the contest with six totals tackles.

Saban promptly named Sanders the replacement for Allen, and if you’ve seen Sanders’ high school highlights you’re likely very excited to see what he can do on this level.

Roll Tide wire wishes Allen a speedy recovery and will continue to publish updates regarding his health and his estimated return.

Alabama football countdown: 16 days until kickoff

We are 16 days from Alabama football kicking off its season on the road against the Missouri Tigers to start a 10-game, SEC only schedule.

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding college football over the last couple of months, but as of right now, the season still looks like it’s a go for the SEC, ACC and Big 12.

So, what does that mean? It means that we can continue the Countdown to Kickoff en route to the Crimson Tide — and the rest of the SEC — getting things underway on Sept. 26.

With it now being Sept. 10, we are officially 16 days away from the start!

Alabama currently has two players wearing the No. 16 for Alabama. Second-year kicker/punter Will Reichard continues to rock the number while true freshman outside linebacker Drew Sanders also wears it.

Reichard had an injury-riddled first season in Tuscaloosa, but there are still high expectations for the former top high school kicker out of Hoover.

Sanders, on the other hand, has come in as a five-star prospect and made a favorable impression on the coaching staff. It’s possible that he could see action in some sort of rotational role on Alabama’s defense as early as Week 1 against Missouri.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 16 Drew Sanders

Freshman outside linebacker Drew Sanders is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.

Each day, we’ll release anywhere from 2-4 player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.

Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.

Next up on the list is freshman outside linebacker Drew Sanders out of Denton (Tex.).

Height: 6-5 / Weight: 230

Class: Freshman

Hometown: Denton (Tex.)

High School: Ryan High School

HS ranking (247Sports): 5-star / No. 22 overall / No. 1 ATH / No. 3 TX

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 37 overall / No. 3 OLB / No. 5 TX

Analysis: Drew Sanders was one of four talented edge players who signed with Alabama in the 2020 recruiting class — joining four-star Quandarrius Robinson and fellow five-stars Will Anderson Jr. and Chris Braswell.

The arrival of the foursome couldn’t have come at a better time either, as Terrell Lewis and Anfernee Jennings are now looking to make an impact on Sundays in the NFL.

Sanders played a little bit of everything in high school, whether it was off-ball linebacker, wide receiver, tight end and, of course, as a standup rusher in some passing situations. And now that he’ll get to focus exclusively on being an outside linebacker in Tuscaloosa, the hope is that he’ll continue to grow into a top-tier defensive option.

The opportunity for early playing time will be there, but Sanders will have plenty of competition for the vacated reps left behind by Lewis and Jennings.

National Signing Day has come and gone, and Alabama’s 2020 recruiting class if officially set. There were 25 total members (26, if you count North Carolina grad transfer tight end Carl Tucker) with talent across the board.

In order for fans to get to know the Crimson Tide’s newest players, we have laid out a “get to know them” article for each member.

The next up is five-star athlete Drew Sanders out of Ryan High School in Texas.

Drew Sanders, Athlete

Hometown: Denton (Tex.)

High school: Ryan

Size: 6-5, 232 (6-5, 230 on official Alabama roster)

247Sports composite ranking: 5-star / No. 22 overall / No. 1 ATH

247Sports ranking: 5-star / No. 13 overall / No. 1 ATH

Rivals ranking: 4-star / No. 37 overall / No. 3 OLB

ESPN ranking: 4-star / 86 overall grade / No. 4 ATH

Commitment date: Apr. 29, 2019

Signing date: Dec. 18, 2019

Where does he fit in? Sanders is one of the more intriguing additions to Alabama’s roster through the 2020 recruiting class. The five-star talent brings versatility, which includes experience at multiple positions on both offense and defense.

As it sits right now, the expectation is that Sanders will start his career at outside linebacker, but that could change at some point. If it does, it won’t be because the Denton (Tex.) native isn’t capable of playing edge at a high level; it would be due to need and his potential impact at another position.

Whether Sanders sticks as an edge player, switches to an off-ball linebacker or flips to the offensive side of the football at tight end, he’s going to be an impact player before his time in Tuscaloosa comes to an end.

QB Bryce Young

WDE Will Anderson
