Here’s how Dre’Mont Jones reacted to the Russell Wilson trade

Dre’Mont Jones expresses a sigh of relief and excitement about the trade for Russell Wilson.

Dre’Mont Jones has spent three years with the Denver Broncos and has become a solid contributor. But while his numbers have shown that he can be a linchpin with the Broncos’ defense for years to come, he understands that the NFL can be a cold business, and he can be traded or released.

So when asked about his initial thoughts on the trade for Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks to Denver, Jones had to make sure he wasn’t amongst the trade bait used to lure the star quarterback in.

“To be honest, I was like, ‘Oh! We got Russell!,'” Jones said earlier this week. “Then they [media] said they traded for ‘Russ’ and some players [went the other way]. So everyone was like, ‘Oh — who are the players?'” Jones recalled with a laugh.

Once the dust settled, Jones expressed gratitude for Wilson’s arrival while noticing a atmosphere difference created by Wilson and new head coach Nathaniel Hackett.

“But it was cool realizing [that] I’m still here, and ‘Russ’ being here, too. I can just tell the energy has been totally different in this building from him and coach Hackett.”

Hopefully, with Super Bowl expectations growing, Jones can continue doing his part on defense while Hackett and Wilson look to enhance the Broncos offensively.

Broncos inactives: 5 players won’t play vs. Bengals

Broncos inactives: DL Dre’Mont Jones (foot), ILB Kenny Young (concussion), DB Caden Sterns (shoulder/neck), CB Michael Ojemudia and QB Brett Rypien.

The Denver Broncos have announced their list of five inactive players for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones (foot), inside linebacker Kenny Young (concussion), safety Caden Sterns (shoulder/neck), cornerback Michael Ojemudia and quarterback Brett Rypien are inactive today.

Shamar Stephen and DeShawn Williams will fill in for Jones on the defensive line and Jonas Griffith is expected to start at linebacker in the place of Young.

Denver running back Mike Boone and outside linebacker Malik Reed also won’t play today but they are not officially inactive because they do not count against the active roster while on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

The Broncos also on Saturday activated safety P.J. Locke from the Reserve/COVID-19 list to the 53-man roster. To make room for Locke on the active roster, Denver waived cornerback Essang Bassey. If he clears waivers, Bassey will likely be re-signed to the practice squad next week.

Sunday’s game will begin at 2:05 p.m. MT on CBS (view the TV map).

Broncos RB Melvin Gordon has a sprained thumb; will play through it

Broncos RB Melvin Gordon sprained his thumb on Sunday and played through the injury. He’s not expected to miss any time.

Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon briefly left Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions with what the team described as a hand injury.

Gordon later returned to the game and the injury did not appear to slow him down, as the running back finished the day with 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Gordon sprained his thumb, “but it doesn’t figure to limit his playing time going forward,” according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones also suffered a foot injury during Sunday’s 38-10 win. It’s believed to be a minor injury.

“[Trainer] Vince [Garcia] thinks he’s going to be OK,” coach Vic Fangio said Sunday evening. “He hurt his foot a little bit. Hopefully it is only a little bit, and we don’t get a surprise tomorrow.”

Inside linebacker Kenny Young also suffered a concussion in Week 14, and he will now enter the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Up next for Denver is a home game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Broncos run over Lions, improve to 7-6 with 38-10 win

Following their win over the Lions, up next for the Broncos is a home game against the Bengals with big Wild Card implications in the AFC.

The Denver Broncos ran over the depleted Detroit Lions at home in Week 14, securing a 38-10 win to improve to 7-6, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Detroit dropped to 1-11-1 with the loss.

Following the death of Demaryius Thomas last week, the Broncos honored Thomas before and during Sunday’s game. Denver opened the game with just 10 players on offense, leaving the “X” wide receiver spot — Thomas’ former position — vacant.

The Broncos then took a delay of game penalty and the Lions declined the foul. It was a classy display from both teams in remembrance of Thomas.

Denver jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter following touchdown runs from Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon. Detroit then scored 10 unanswered points before the Broncos added a field goal and took a 17-10 lead into halftime.

After halftime, Denver forced and recovered a fumble at the Lions’ 35-yard line. Several plays later, Williams caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to extend the lead to 24-10.

After forcing a turnover on downs, the Broncos then got the ball back and Gordon scored on a 14-yard run to make it 31-10.

Denver scored again late in the fourth quarter when Bridgewater connected with tight end Albert Okwuegbunam on a four-yard touchdown pass that extended the lead to 38-10.

Williams and Gordon carried the Broncos’ offense, totaling 198 yards from scrimmage while combing to score four touchdowns.

Dre’Mont Jones was Denver’s star on defense, totaling three tackles (all of them behind the line of scrimmage), two sacks and a fourth-down pass breakup in the victory. Safety Justin Simmons also had an impressive performance, recording five tackles and an interception.

Next week, the Broncos will host the Cincinnati Bengals in an AFC showdown that will have big implications in the Wild Card race.

Report: Broncos DL Dre’Mont Jones could miss up to 4 weeks

Broncos defensive linemen Dre’Mont Jones and DeMarcus Walker were injured during Sunday’s loss to the Steelers.

Denver Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones could be sidelined for up to four weeks after suffering a knee injury in Week 2, according to Brandon Krisztal of KOA Radio.

Broncos wide receiver (knee) will miss the rest of the season and quarterback Drew Lock (shoulder) will be sidelined for at least two weeks. The team is still waiting to learn the severity of defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker’s calf injury.

Before leaving Sunday’s game, Jones totaled one tackle. Walker failed to get on the stat sheet before his exit.

Walker was selected by the Broncos in the second round of 2017 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He has failed to live up to his early-round draft status, playing primarily as a rotational defensive lineman.

Jones was selected by Denver in the third round of last year’s draft out of Ohio State. He totaled 14 tackles and 3.5 sacks as a rookie last season.

With Walker and Jones banged up, the Broncos’ remaining defensive linemen are Shelby Harris, Mike Purcell, Jurrell Casey and McTelvin Agim.

Broncos wait for test results after rash of injuries

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock will know more about the severity of his injury on Monday.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”PjyTHy7NHO-977877-7498″]

The Broncos have been hit hard by injuries this year.

Outside linebacker Von Miller (ankle) will miss at least three months and running back Phillip Lindsay (toe) is expected to miss at least two games. Cornerback A.J. Bouye will miss at least three weeks.

This week, wide receiver Courtland Sutton (shoulder) returned to action but left Sunday’s game against the Steelers with knee pain and cramps. Defensive linemen DeMarcus Walker (calf) and Dre’Mont Jones (knee) also left Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh and neither of them returned.

Denver’s quarterback, Drew Lock, suffered the most notable injury. Lock could be sidelined for several weeks with a shoulder injury. Broncos coach Vic Fangio didn’t have an update on the QB’s status on Sunday afternoon.

“They’ll undergo some more tests once we get back, and we’ll have some answers then,” Fangio said. “I don’t have anything definite yet.”

Lock had a positive outlook despite wearing a cast.

“We’re going to take it day-by-day,” the QB said. “I’m optimistic about it. I’ll have it checked out tomorrow morning. We’ll know more then.”

After Lock undergoes more testing on Monday, Denver should know more about the severity of his injury. If Lock has to miss games, Jeff Driskel will likely start in his place. Driskel went 18-of-34 for 256 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception in a 26-21 loss to the Steelers.

Denver Broncos depth chart prediction: Defensive line

Which defensive linemen will make the Broncos’ 53-man roster this year?

As we continue our 2020 depth chart prediction series for the Denver Broncos, today we’re going to be looking at the defensive line.

Previously, we predicted the QBRB, TEWR and OL depth charts.

DE NT DE
Shelby Harris Mike Purcell Jurrell Casey
Dre’Mont Jones McTelvin Agim DeMarcus Walker
Joel Heath Kyle Peko Christian Covington
Jonathan Harris

It’s pretty easy to predict the Broncos’ starting lineup. Harris and Purcell will likely keep their starting spots and Casey will presumably fill the role previously held by Derek Wolfe. It’s the backup spots that are undetermined.

Jones and Walker figure to serve as important rotational pieces and Agim is essentially a lock to make the team after being selected in the third round of April’s draft.

Last year, Denver carried six defensive linemen on the initial 53-man roster. If that’s the case again in 2020, Covington and Heath might only make the team if one of the team’s top six defensive linemen suffers an injury this summer. Peko and Harris figure to be longshots as well.
