The Athletic breaks down Auburn Football’s biggest question ahead of spring practice

Auburn kicks off its spring practice period at the end of the month. Which position group has the most to prove?

The on-field portion of the [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] era finally begins on Monday, Feb. 27 when Auburn takes to the practice field for spring practice.

Alongside the usual questions that come with having a new man in charge, there are several other questions that Auburn hopes to answer by the end of spring, or at least be closer to finding solutions.

Most seem to point towards the quarterback position, as Freeze has mentioned publically that he welcomes the opportunity to evaluate the position himself. Also, in that same quote, he mentions the struggle up front, which may have led to issues with [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag] and [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag]’s decision-making in 2022.

It seems that Auburn can improve QB play by developing a stronger offensive line, which leads to The Athletic‘s most important question surrounding Auburn ahead of spring practice.

In a piece titled “SEC football: Biggest spring practice question facing each program(sub. required)“, Seth Emerson of The Athletic points toward both lines as Auburn’s biggest question mark. He is interested to see how Auburn’s new additions fill their need.

Hugh Freeze inherits a team that lost 10 offensive or defensive linemen with starting experience, including defensive lineman [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] and [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag]. The Tigers reached into the portal for three offensive and four defensive linemen and have several returning players with at least some experience.

The Tigers added several players that could start game one on the offensive line, such as [autotag]Avery Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Dillon Wade[/autotag]. Auburn also received defensive line help in the form of [autotag]Justin Rogers[/autotag] and [autotag]Mosiah Nasili-Kite[/autotag], which will provide a boost to [autotag]Dylan Brooks[/autotag], Auburn’s most experienced returning defensive lineman.

Auburn’s spring practice period will conclude on Saturday, April 8, as the Tigers take the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium for the annual A-Day game.

The Draft Network sends Auburn pass rusher to the Saints in latest mock draft

The Draft Network sent Auburn Tigers pass rusher Derick Hall to the New Orleans Saints in their latest mock draft as a Cameron Jordan heir-apparent:

One of the biggest questions facing the New Orleans Saints this offseason centers on their defensive line. A ton of players are headed for free agency, including starters like David Onyemata and Marcus Davenport as well as top backups in Tanoh Kpassagnon, Shy Tuttle, Kentavius Street, and Malcolm Roach. So it’s easy to see why pass rushers are a popular choice for New Orleans in the early rounds of recent mock drafts.

The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez has the latest 2023 mock draft, linking the Saints to Auburn Tigers pass rusher Derick Hall in the first round. Here’s what they wrote of the pick:

“The Saints have been trying to find the next edge rusher to pass the torch to as Cameron Jordan is getting older. They take one more swing at it and select Derick Hall. Hall has a lot of potential as an edge rusher and a veteran like Jordan could help Hall refine his tools to reach his max potential as a player.”

Hall impressed NFL scouts and coaches at the Senior Bowl in January, weighing in at a very solid 6-foot-2 and 252 pounds with impressive 34-inch arms — boasting an 83-inch wingspan, one of the widest at the event. And he doesn’t let many opponents get past him. He’s missed just 25 tackles on over 1,900 defensive snaps in four years at Auburn, wrapping up ball-carriers for 90 defensive stops (typically counted as stopping the offense for less than half the yardage needed to convert a first down). He’s been a consistent pass rusher off the edge, too, racking up 133 pressures and 22 sacks per Pro Football Focus charting.

But would the Saints even consider him? Hall is about ten pounds lighter than the defensive ends the Saints have drafted since Jeff Ireland took over their scouting department, though you have to think that philosophy changes a bit without defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen working with the unit. Maybe his replacement Todd Grantham has a different philosophy. Either way, Hall is a talented prospect in this year’s draft, and he’s someone we’ll be watching closely in the months ahead.

Top 2023 NFL Draft prospects at the Eagles’ biggest positions of need

We’re looking at the top 2023 NFL Draft prospects at the Philadelphia Eagles’ most significant positions of need

The rich are getting richer, and even with a 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, things are looking promising for the Eagles as the 2023 NFL offseason gets underway.

Thanks to some draft night wizardry from Howie Roseman, the Eagles traded the No. 16 overall pick, No. 19 overall pick, and a 2022 sixth-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for the No. 18 overall pick, a 2022 third-round pick, a 2022 seventh-round pick, a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick.

With 18 Eagles set to hit free agency and some roster retooling set to begin, here are the best 2023 NFL draft prospects at the Birds’ biggest positions of need.

Browns take defensive linemen with both picks in a new three-round mock draft

The Browns used both picks in a three-round mock on defensive linemen (please don’t actually do this)

It is no secret that the Cleveland Browns need to address their defensive interior. However, using both of their day-two picks on just the defensive line may be a waste of resources for them when the 2023 NFL Draft rolls around. Given the rare immediate success of defensive tackles as rookies, addressing the position in free agency may be the best option for the Browns. However, in the latest Draft Wire 2023 NFL Mock Draft, the Browns were mocked Auburn defensive end Derick Hall in the second round and Texas defensive tackle Keondre Coburn in the third round.

A wide receiver early may be a better use of their resources given what the free agent market looks like at that position compared to the other two needs for the Browns.

Derick Hall is a first-round pick in College Sports Wire’s latest mock draft

Derick Hall is looking to be the first Auburn defensive lineman taken in the first round since Derrick Brown in 2020.

[autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] is a consensus top 50 prospect and is creeping into the first round in more and more mock drafts ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire released his latest mock draft Friday morning and he has the Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the 31st overall pick in the draft.

The Chiefs could add some help on the defensive front with Hall out of Auburn. He led the Tigers this past season with 47 total pressures, 28 quarterback hurries, 6.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles.

The Chiefs are in need of help along the defensive line and Hall can be a difference-maker rushing the passer. The three-year starter made 29.5 tackles for loss, 19.5 sacks, and forced five fumbles in his time on the Plains.

The NFL draft will start on Thursday, April 27, and will last until, Saturday, April 29.

Six former Tigers invited to the NFL Combine

Six former Tigers are among the 319 players invited to attend the event Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana.

After having just one player taken in last year’s NFL draft, Auburn will be well-represented at the 2023 NFL Combine with six former players invited.

Running back [autotag]Tank Bigbsy[/autotag], kicker [autotag]Anders Carlson[/autotag], edge rushers [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] and [autotag]Eku Leota[/autotag], linebacker [autotag]Owen Pappoe[/autotag], and defensive lineman [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag] have all been invited to the prestigious event in Indianapolis, Indiana. The event is scheduled to take place from Feb. 27 to March 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Hall is Auburn’s top prospect and has a chance to hear his name called in the first round. Bigsby and Pappoe are looking to play their way into the second or third round of the draft.

Pappoe missed the Senior Bowl with an injury but is expected to be ready for the combine and Auburn’s pro day.

The 2023 NFL Draft will take place from April 27-29.

Lions draft profile: Auburn EDGE Derick Hall

A look at Auburn EDGE Derick Hall and how he might appeal to the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL draft

Next in the series of 2023 draft prospect profiles is an accomplished SEC pass rusher who doesn’t get a lot of fanfare.

Derick Hall, EDGE, Auburn

Height: 6-foot-2.5 inches

Weight: 252 (measured at Senior Bowl)

Turns 22 in March

A four-year player for the Tigers, Hall grew into a prominent role in his final two seasons at Auburn. Grew, as in literally; he bulked up from a 235-pound LB into a 255-pound pass rusher. Hall posted 16 sacks and 24.5 TFLs in his final two seasons, leading Auburn in both categories. He also picked off one pass and forced four fumbles in that time. Hall participated in the 2023 Senior Bowl week.

Pros

  • Very strong upper body with powerful shoulders and strong hands
  • Good initial burst off the snap
  • Starts in space nicely (as rush OLB) and shows good agility in space
  • Quick to diagnose and reacts well with twitchy speed
  • Good finisher, has power but also wraps up nicely
  • Quality run defender outside the tackle box
  • Long arms (over 34.25 inches) and wingspan (83 inches) for his height
  • Drops into space comfortably for a player his size

Cons

  • Poor hand usage in the pass rush
  • Will get pushed around in the run game when tacking inside
  • Much less effective when aligned as a DE or in tighter quarters
  • Runs well in space, but it’s straight-line speed; struggles with change of direction in coverage and run defense
  • Does not create space well for himself despite having good strength and speed
  • Can be suckered by play-fakes and options

Overall

Hall offers some real juice as a stand-up EDGE with above-average speed and good upper-body power. He can play in space and finishes well. However, Hall needs technical development in his pass rush. He’s much better playing as a stand-up OLB in an odd-man front, and that’s not what the Lions often run under Dan Campbell or Aaron Glenn. Hall generally projects in the 25-50 overall range and doesn’t seem like a great value fit for Detroit in that range.

Derick Hall is headed to a Super Bowl contender in ESPN’s latest mock draft

Derick Hall is headed to one of the top teams in the NFL in this mock draft.

[autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] is one of the top defensive prospects in the 2023 NFL draft and one expert believes he will be headed to a team playing for the Super Bowl this weekend. ESPN’s Matt Miller has the Kansas City Chiefs’ drafting Hall with the 30th pick in his mock draft released Monday.

According to Miller, Hall was a riser at the Senior Bowl this past week, impressing with his size (6-foot-3, 252-pound size, 34⅜-inch arm length, and an 83-inch wingspan) and his quickness once he took the field.

This selection lines up with ESPN’s Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft, where he had Hall being drafted by the Buffalo Bills with the 27th overall pick.

In his four seasons at Auburn Hall made 146 tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss, 19.5 sacks, and forced five fumbles. The Gulfport, Mississippi, native was voted a team captain his senior season and named to the All-SEC First Team by the coaches.

The first round of the NFL draft will start Thursday, April 27, and will last until Saturday, April 29.

Browns Film Room: Auburn’s Derick Hall could be a great pairing with Myles Garrett

Is the former Auburn Tiger the long-term starter opposite Myles Garrett?

The Cleveland Browns have been unable to find a long-term starter opposite superstar Myles Garrett. Alex Wright is an intriguing player that has the skill set to develop into a great player but there isn’t a lot of depth at the position. Auburn’s Derick Hall is far from a polished and perfect prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft but his tools and athleticism are incredibly intriguing.

Hall has had a nice Senior Bowl week that only makes me like the prospect more. Hall will need to be coached up when it comes to his technique but with Jim Schwartz on the staff, the ability to set him up for success is there. Let’s take a deeper look at the film to get to know Derick Hall in this week’s draft film room.
