Stephen Silas watching how Lovie Smith, Texans coach top rookie

The Texans drafted a top prospect at No. 3 overall in Derek Stingley Jr., and Stephen Silas sees parallels with the development of his own No. 3 rookie (Jabari Smith Jr.) with the Rockets.

HOUSTON — During a break in Friday’s NFL training camp action, Rockets head coach Stephen Silas had a chance to talk to Texans head coach Lovie Smith on the sidelines. Smith had invited Silas to attend practice with the opportunity to finally meet, face to face.

While on the sideline, Silas took some mental notes on how Smith was relating to his younger players, as well as making sure they were where they needed to be in order to succeed in the play being called. One player Silas paid special attention to was rookie cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., and specifically how he interacted with Smith.

A former LSU standout, Stingley was picked at No. 3 overall in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft. His athleticism and natural ability stood out at LSU, and he was named to the AP All-American first team as a freshman. Going into his rookie year, he has a lot of expectations to become a football cornerstone for the rebuilding Texans.

The main reason Silas watched the interactions between Smith and Stingley is because, in less than two months, he will find himself in a similar situation with rookie forward Jabari Smith Jr. of the Rockets.

Houston used its No. 3 pick in the 2022 NBA draft to select Smith, who played one season at Auburn before declaring. Like Stingley, Smith also received several awards for his stellar play in college and was named an All-American (second team) at the end of the season.

Silas knows that both players and organizations have big tasks ahead of them, trying to restore faith among fans who have not been happy about the results from both teams over the last two seasons. He elaborated on what he could observe about Stingley at training camp.

“Right now, he is trying to learn, and guys are pointing him in the right direction,” Silas said of Stingley. “For him, it is the learning curve. Making sure you are in the right spot and helping the next man play well is probably what he is going through right now. He is impressive watching him. He is super quick and fast. The learning curve is going to be interesting to see.”

Twitter reacts: Andrew Booth Jr. falls to Vikings

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. hearing his name called in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Former Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. was the first Tiger to hear his name called in the 2022 NFL Draft after the Minnesota Vikings selected him at No. 42.

Despite being projected as a first-round selection in most mock drafts, Booth ultimately had to wait until day two to be drafted. He was the sixth cornerback selected in the Draft, with Derek Stingley Jr. (Houston Texans) and Sauce Gardner (New York Jets) highlighting the group ahead of him.

Injury concerns seemed to play a factor in Booth’s fall, as he underwent sports hernia surgery in March. Still, the second-round selection is an impressive accomplishment for a promising, young player with plenty of upside.

With the pick, the Vikings could have a day-one starter opposite of veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson.

Here’s what people on Twitter had to say about the Clemson Tiger heading to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Expect Andrew Booth Jr. to be drafted early in round two

After not hearing his name called on day one of the 2022 NFL Draft, Andrew Booth Jr. should fall off the board quickly in round two.

Despite being projected by most mock drafts as a first-round talent, Andrew Booth Jr. didn’t hear his name called in round one of the 2022 NFL Draft. Still, the former Clemson cornerback should fall off the board very quickly in round two on Friday.

After trading their original first-round selections, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings have the No. 33 and No. 34 picks, respectively, and both are cornerback-needy teams.

According to USA TODAY Sports’ Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, Booth is the third-best remaining prospect, behind Georgia linebacker Nakobe Dean and Liberty quarterback Malik Willis. Here’s what Middlehurst-Schwartz had to say about Booth.

The combination of quick feet at the line of scrimmage and rapid closing speed to get his hands on the ball make Booth a formidable matchup when he maintains his composure. Receivers can turn his aggressiveness against him, however, making it imperative for Booth to play with more restraint at the next level.

The 2021 First-team All-ACC selection finished his collegiate career with 75 tackles, ten pass breakups and five interceptions, three of which came last season. Four cornerbacks were taken in round one, so outside of Booth, the Buccaneers and Vikings don’t have many options left in the cornerback department.

The 2022 NFL draft is underway and not only did Philadelphia watch five targeted prospects go off the board, but they’ll face four of the five players during the 2022 regular season.

The NFL schedule is set to be released in mid-May, and the Eagles will in fact face Travon Walker, Aidan Hutchinson, Derek Stingley Jr., and Kayvon Thibodeaux during the 2022 season at some point.

SKOL Search: Final mock draft roundup

The last mock draft roundup before the festivities kick off tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have finally made it. The NFL Draft starts tonight!

Over the last three months, I have been aggregating expert mock drafts from across the industry and seeing who has been mocked to the Vikings. This exploration has seen some staggering results.

I have gathered a total of 173 mock drafts over those three months, and we have seen 19 different players go to the Vikings. Of those individuals, only three players before the final 10 days were on the offensive side of the football, which adds up to a paltry total of 12. Tonight’s result for the Vikings is truly up in the air, as nobody knows how Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will be conducting the draft.

Without further ado, here is the final mock draft roundup of the year. Enjoy the draft!

*Note: This is an aggregate over the last ten days so there might be an analyst on here twice.

Eagles making calls about potentially trading up in the 2022 NFL draft

Philadelphia Eagles making calls about potentially trading up in the 2022 NFL draft

We’re about 48 hours from the start of the NFL draft and Philadelphia is once again dominating the headlines.

Howie Roseman loves to make moves and according to Ian Rapoport, the Eagles are the one team making the most noise in regards to trading up for a dynamic player on defense.

Philadelphia has an extra pick at its disposal thanks to the Carson Wentz trade and the target could be among a group of players that includes Kyle Hamilton, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Jordan Davis, Derek Stingley Jr., Jermaine Johnson, Jameson Williams, and others.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Eagles will have to part with pick No. 18 overall to move up, or would they part with a second or third-round pick?
