Sauce Gardner ruled out for Jets Week 6 matchup vs. Eagles

The New York Jets ruled out All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner for Sunday’s Week 6 matchup against the Philadelphia #Eagles

Two of the best cornerbacks in the NFL will miss Sunday’s matchup at Metlife Stadium, as Sauce Gardner will join Darius Slay in being ruled out.

The Jets All-Pro cornerback will miss the contest with a concussion after suffering symptoms this week.

The Jets’ secondary was already thin during Friday’s practice.

Cornerback D.J. Reed (concussion) has not been cleared, and Gardner did not practice because of a concussion-related illness.

With Gardner ruled out, former Eagles’ cornerback Craig James will be tasked with slowing down A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

See it: Jets trash-talked Giants in meaningless preseason game

The New York Jets had a lot of trash talk for the New York Giants in a meaningless preseason game that clearly meant a lot to them.

After years of mediocrity and failure, the two New York NFL franchises — the Jets and Giants — finally have some buzz surrounding them.

The Jets are now led by future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers and the Giants have been quietly building one of the league’s most interesting teams.

So when they faced each other last Saturday night in their annual preseason matchup at MetLife Stadium, two ascending powers were present.

The tensions were high. The Jets played the majority of their starters — including Rodgers for the first time — against a Giants’ lineup comprised of just three projected starters.

There were some tense moments early on when Giants linebacker Jihad ‘Haddy’ Ward decided to harass Rodgers beyond what the script called for. He pushed Rodgers, Rodgers pushed back and the sparks flew.

Rodgers, mic’d up for HBO’s Hard Knocks, played the incident up for the cameras as both players claimed not to know each other.

Ward was uncharacteristically mum when asked about the incident after the game but there’s no doubt Rodgers knows who he is. After all, Ward recorded two QB hits when the Giants dropped A-A-Ron and the Green Bay Packers in London last season.

The trash-talking didn’t end there. When the Giants challenged Pro Bowl cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner down the sideline with rookie speedster Jalin Hyatt, the 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year spoiled the party even though Hyatt had him beat.

The Jets won the game, 32-24, but it’s clear there is something brewing between these two teams, who meet again in Week 8 of the regular season.

Baldy Breakdown: Giants have something in Jalin Hyatt

Brian Baldinger takes a look at WR Jalin Hyatt vs. CB Ahmad Gardner, and offers a quick breakdown on Isaiah Simmons’ New York Giants debut.

The New York Giants wrapped up their preseason with a 32-24 loss to the New York Jets on Saturday night, and the game featured many of their young stars and new additions.

Perhaps most notably, the exhibition finale provided the first opportunity for fans to see rookie wide receiver Jalin Hyatt go up against second-year cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner.

The Giants sent Hyatt at Sauce from the jump and Round 1 went to the rookie.

Hyatt stutter-stepped Gardner and then used his speed to create a few yards of separation. Unfortunately for the Giants, quarterback Tyrod Taylor was unable to hit him in stride.

Round 2 went to Sauce, who was able to stay close to Hyatt and record a pass deflection.

It was a tiny glimpse of what is to come.

Retired offensive lineman Brian Baldinger liked what he saw and looks forward to the regular season matchup on October 29.

The arrival of linebacker Isaiah Simmons also caught Baldy’s attention. He previously broke down the veteran’s film and did so again following the Saturday night game.

“Wink (Martindale) wins that one. And Isaiah Simmons is a pass rusher,” Baldinger said.

There’s a lot to be excited about for the Giants in 2023, and that includes both Hyatt and Simmons.

Where did Darius Slay, James Bradberry land in a PFF ranking of the top 32 cornerbacks in NFL?

The Philadelphia Eagles had one CB land in the top 3 and two total in the top 15 of a PFF ranking of the top 32 cornerbacks in the NFL

The Philadelphia Eagles had a top five defense in 2022, and their talented cornerback duo played a major role in the season long success.

PFF has released their 2023 cornerback rankings, and there’s a new top dawg, with the Jets ‘Sauce’ Gardner getting the label as the NFL’s best.

Philadelphia’s Darius Slay and James Bradberry weren’t that far behind, with one landing in the top three, and another in the top 15 overall.

Sauce Gardner is going back to school

New York Jets star cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner is headed back to the classroom to finish what he started

The first rookie cornerback to be named a first-team All-Pro in 41 years, New York Jets star cover man Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner is heading back to the classroom.

Gardner left the University of Cincinnati early to make the jump to the pros, and the Jets made him the No. 4 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft. He immediately rewarded them with one of the most dominant seasons from a rookie cornerback in NFL history.

Now, Gardner is heading back to the classroom, announcing on social media Saturday that he’s re-enrolled at UC, and on track to finish his degree this summer.

Kudos to Sauce for making sure he finishes his commitment on the academic level, while also delivering the goods on the field.

4 Jets players to watch vs. the Bears

Zach Wilson may not be playing this weekend, but here are the Jets players we’ll be watching when they face the Bears.

The Chicago Bears make their second trip out to New Jersey this season when they take on the New York Jets in Week 12. The Bears (3-8) are reeling after another close loss, this time to the Atlanta Falcons, in which they fell short right at the end. The Jets (6-4) meanwhile could be on the verge of unravelling as they’re dealing with a quarterback issue following their last-second loss to the New England Patriots.

A week ago, it was a lock that we would see second-year quarterbacks Justin Fields and Zach Wilson start for the Bears and Jets, respectively. But with Fields dealing with a shoulder injury and Wilson getting benched, it doesn’t seem likely we’ll see either of them. Here are five players that should be watched, however, when the game kicks off.

Jets’ bombastic rookie corner ‘can’t wait’ to see the Patriots

Jets rookie corner already eyeing a monster divisional rematch with the Patriots

The New England Patriots will have their hands full on the other side of the bye week with a vengeful New York Jets team hoping to repay the favor for the Week 8 loss at MetLife Stadium.

One Jets player clearly looking forward to the meeting the most is brash rookie cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner.

Following a stunning upset victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, the No. 4 overall pick of the 2022 NFL draft appeared hell-bent on getting even with the Patriots, who have put together back-to-back wins to climb back over .500 win percentage.

Even with the game slated to take place at Gillette Stadium, Gardner has it circled in red with the utmost anticipation.

The win over the Bills moved the Jets to 6-3 on the season, while the Patriots are sitting at 5-4. It’s clear this isn’t the same Jets team from previous years, and the AFC East as a whole just might be the best division in football.

But bad things have typically happened whenever Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is under center against a Bill Belichick-coached defense. In just three meetings, he has thrown seven interceptions and been sacked seven times.

Another defensive battle for the ages could be on the horizon for both teams in Week 11.

Instant analysis: Bills shocked by Jets in Week 9 loss

Instant analysis: #Bills shocked by #Jets in Week 9 loss (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills are off to their best start since 1993.

The Bills (6-2) entered their Week 9 game  as11-point favorites against the New York Jets (6-3).

Buffalo led the league in yards per game on offense.

None of that mattered as the Jets shocked the Bills at MetLife Stadium, knocking off the Super Bowl favorites Sunday afternoon, 20-17.

The contest started all right for the Bills, with the Buffalo offense being gifted with great field position after the Jets kicker slipped on the opening kickoff. Buffalo followed it up with a 42-yard pass to Stefon Diggs. That play would be the Bills longest play on the day.

Two plays later, Josh Allen was intercepted by Jordan Whitehead.

It would be a harbinger for the rest of the day.

Buffalo’s high-powered offense was rendered mediocre by the Jets. The Bills struggled in pass blocking and once again, hoped that a game plan of watching Allen run around and make impromptu plays would be good enough to win.

For a few fleeting moments, it seemed like it would work. Allen ran for a 36-yard touchdown on a well-scripted play:

However, the Jets would be relentless in putting pressure on Allen, gradually containing him and forcing him to throw off balance.

Allen threw for 205 passing yards on an 18-of-34 passing day. Allen was off balance on both of his interceptions, not setting his feet and largely gifting the Jets with the turnovers.

Buffalo’s offensive line lacked the ability to slow down the New York defensive front. Allen was under duress, his receivers did not create separation, and his passes were not as accurate as viewers have been accustomed to seeing.

Buffalo was not committed to any sort of run attack outside of Allen. The trio of Devin Singletary, James Cook, and Nyheim Hines ran 13 times for 48 yards.

This was probably the game in which the Bills defense missed the most tackles of the season.

Several times, Buffalo defenders did not take the right angle and allowed Jets players to gain extra yards. While the Jets did not have a massive day through the air, they were methodical with moving the ball down the field. QB Zach Wilson felt pressure at times, but it was not anywhere near what would be acceptable for a team in Super Bowl contention.

Buffalo was gashed on the ground for the second game in a row. It seemed as if the Bills had things under control for the first half. However, the Jets continued to gain the advantage in the trenches as the game wore on.

The fourth quarter drive that led to the winning field goal was particularly worrisome for the Bills, as they offered little resistance to the New York ground attack at the start of the drive, a drive that started at the Jets four-yard-line. Buffalo only gained an advantage at the end of the drive when it appeared that the Jets were just trying to bleed the clock for a late field goal.

The Bills, even with their lack of precision, still had an opportunity to at least tie the game. Buffalo started with a beautiful pass to Diggs, which would have been his first reception of the second half.

Instead, the Bills were called for holding on Dion Dawkins, negating the massive gain. Even on fourth down, the Bills had Allen throw a deep ball, only to be defended fairly well by rookie Sauce Gardner.

The game had a similar feel to the Jacksonville Jaguars loss of last year. Buffalo was imprecise with their play, lacking consistency from play-to-play on the game. They largely could not string together a series of positive plays.

It was equally shocking that Buffalo’s play-calling could not figure out the Jets. Von Miller recorded a strip sack, but outside of that play, it is hard to find a play that stands out for the defense. On the flip side, the offense was inconsistent.

This game was a humbling experience for the Bills. Buffalo was battling with several players out of the lineup, including Matt Milano, Jordan Poyer, and Spencer Brown. Still, the mistakes the team is making are concerning, especially from a coach who preaches the importance of details.

Buffalo looks to get things in the right direction in a difficult game against the Minnesota Vikings next week at Highmark Stadium.
