Are Terrace Marshall Jr. and Jonathan Mingo in a battle for the Panthers’ X receiver role? If they are, it could intensify during Saturday’s preseason opener.
On Saturday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers will kick off their preseason by locking up with their joint practice partners in the New York Jets. But there will be battles within that battle, as there always is during the summer.
So, let’s take a look at four of the most intriguing of them . . .
Here’s how the Panthers’ hog mollies are stacking up in the “Madden NFL 24” ratings:
For the first time in some time, the Carolina Panthers seem to have an offensive line they can rely upon. But do the folks over at EA Sports feel the same way?
Here are the “Madden NFL 24” ratings for the team’s offensive linemen:
Former Alabama OG Deonte Brown has been released by the Carolina Panthers.
Former Alabama offensive guard Deonte Brown was released by the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday. The news was first reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Brown spent one season with the Panthers organization.
The native of Decatur, Alabama spent five seasons with the Crimson Tide. He played in 48 games with 26 of them coming as a starter. During his senior season, he was listed as a member of the first-team All-SEC by the coaches in the SEC. He was also a second-team All-SEC honoree by the Associated Press.
After concluding his career with Alabama, Brown was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft by the Panthers. He made no appearances in the 2021 season and spent the majority of the year on the injured reserve. Now, he will have the opportunity to play for another NFL team after being released by the Panthers.

With the release of G Deonte Brown, the Panthers have now cut ties with two of their 2021 draft picks.
The journey of a Carolina Panthers fans’ cult favorite may be over. And the journey, unfortunately, wasn’t very long.
As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have cut guard Deonte Brown. Brown was a sixth-round pick of the organization from a year ago.

The 6-foot-4, 335-pound hog molly was looked at as a steal by many last spring. Brown had just wrapped up on a standout collegiate career as part of the University of Alabama’s heralded offensive line, being named a First-team All-SEC selection from the league coaches and a Second-team All-SEC selection by the Associated Press.
Brown ended up appearing in three games for Carolina during his rookie campaign in 2021. Per Pro Football Focus, he allowed two pressures over 19 pass-blocking snaps in those outings.
Ironically enough, it was likely the rise of another sixth-round pick—Cade Mays—that helped push Brown off the roster. Brown can, however, be added back to the practice squad if he is not picked up by another team.

Here are our most likely cut candidates as the Panthers inch closer to their final roster.
With two preseason games in the books, it’s just about time for the Carolina Panthers to trim their roster down to 80 players.
Before 4 p.m. ET on Aug. 23, every NFL team must cut five guys to meet the 80-player requirement—and the Panthers reportedly have gotten started by waiving linebacker Khalan Tolson early this morning.
So, here are our most likely cut candidates as the Panthers inch closer to their final roster.
The New York Giants won’t face superstar RB Christian McCaffrey in Week 7 after the Carolina Panthers placed him on injured reserve.
The New York Giants are incredibly banged up and will likely be without a number of players in Week 7, but they won’t be alone. The Carolina Panthers will also limp into MetLife Stadium down some key players.
The Panthers will be without superstar running back Christian McCaffrey, who was placed on injured reserve late last week with a hamstring injury. They will also be down rookie offensive lineman Deonte Brown, who landed on IR with a knee issue.
The loss of McCaffrey will change the way Carolina’s offense is run.
“I think right now, we have to figure out, especially with Christian out and some other guys out, what our identity is,” Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said on Sunday. “We’re trying to figure out exactly how to win as best we can.”
Rhule took aim at several of his players, including quarterback Sam Darnold, essentially saying no one is playing up to par.
After starting the season 3-0, the Panthers have completely fallen off a cliff, losing each of their last three games — some of those in dramatic fashion.
With McCaffrey out on Sunday, Carolina will commit to the run on the back of Chuba Hubbard, who is averaging 3.9 yards per carry this season. That’s obviously where the Giants will focus their attention, hoping to force Darnold into throwing more frequently than the Panthers’ game plan calls for.

The Panthers have now placed RB Christian McCaffrey on the IR. By the time his stint is completed, he will have missed 19 of the team’s last 25 games.
The status of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey grew a bit more curious following his complete absence from practice on Thursday. After a week of some progression before their matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles and a limited session the day prior, the star rusher was seemingly trending in the right direction.
Well, the only direction now is down.
As announced by the team on Saturday afternoon, McCaffrey has been placed on the injured reserve. This will keep the fifth-year back and his strained hamstring down for at least three more games.
McCaffrey sustained the leg injury during the Thursday night showdown with the Houston Texans back in Week 3. He has missed the Panthers’ last two outings, both losses, as a result.
These three additional games will, at a minimum, add up to five on the young campaign. By the time this stint is completed, he will have missed 19 of Carolina’s last 25 games.
The team also announced that rookie guard Deonte Brown, who left practice on Friday with a “knee issue,” will join McCaffrey on the injured reserve. They will also opt not to activate fellow guard Pat Elflein for Week 6’s clash with the Minnesota Vikings.

We knew WR Shi Smith would be out for the opener against the Jets. What other Panthers will be joining him on the sideline today?
The Carolina Panthers released their list of inactive players an hour and a half ahead of kickoff against the New York Jets on Sunday. Here’s the group:
WR Shi Smith (shoulder injury)
G Michael Jordan (healthy)
DE Darryl Johnson (healthy)
DT Phil Hoskins (healthy)
G Deonte Brown (healthy)
LB Clay Johnston (healthy)
Smith’s status, of course, should come as no shock. The rookie receiver was already deemed out for this one as he nurses a shoulder injury.
Taking his spot, unofficially, will be wideout Alex Erickson. Erickson was just signed to and elevated from the practice squad to undertake punt return duties for the opener.
Jordan and Johnson, who were both acquired over the last two weeks, are also down.
Perhaps the most surprising inactive is the rookie Brown. With starting right guard John Miller out after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, some extra offensive line depth could’ve been useful, especially for a less-than-stellar unit. Nonetheless, Dennis Daley takes the starting nod for Miller.
Here’s who the Jets have out for the contest:
RB Josh Adams
RB La’Mical Perine
LB Quincy Williams
CB Jason Pinnock
DL Jonathan Marshall
WR Keelan Cole

On Monday, the Panthers announced starting RG John Miller has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
The Carolina Panthers are entering the 2021 regular season with a distinct lack of depth (and talent) on their offensive line. This certainly won’t help.
Right guard John Miller has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list as of Monday, the team announced. The starting interior lineman may now be in danger of missing the season opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 12.
If Miller is vaccinated, asymptomatic and provides two negative tests, he will be permitted to rejoin the Panthers within the next 24 hours . If he is not vaccinated, he could miss five days for being a close contact or ten days with a positive test.
Rookie Deonte Brown is currently listed as the backup to Miller at right guard on the team’s current depth chart. The sixth-rounder started on the interior of the Alabama Crimson Tide’s offensive line, but on the left side, in each of last year’s 13 games.
Fellow rookie Brady Christensen may also be an option if Miller were to miss the Week 1 contest. Head coach Matt Rhule has previously stated the third-round pick may be best used at guard as he develops his game.
Third-year veteran Dennis Daley, given his proven versatility, could be in play as well.
