Demouy Kennedy, Alton McCaskill IV named to Comeback Player of the Year Award watch list

A pair of #cubuffs were named to the Comeback Player of the Year Award watch list

Colorado’s Alton McCaskill IV and Demouy Kennedy were both named to the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year Award watch list on Tuesday ahead of their first seasons with the Buffs.

McCaskill, a former Houston running back who earned the 2021 AAC Rookie of the Year, missed all of last season with an ACL tear but told me earlier this month that he’s “feeling really good and explosive” following an extensive rehab process. He’s expected to be at or near 100% for the season opener.

The linebacker Kennedy appeared in five games last year for Alabama before suffering a season-ending knee injury. In 2021, he was one of the Crimson Tide’s top special teams contributors.

Now at Arizona State, former Colorado wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, who led the Buffs with 470 receiving yards last season before suffering a lower-leg injury in November, also made the watch list.

Jarek Broussard remains Colorado’s only player to win the award, doing so in the shortened 2020 campaign.

Former Alabama LB Demouy Kennedy making noise in first Buffs camp

Colorado LB coach Andre’ Hart has been impressed by Demouy Kennedy’s speed

The list of transfers for the Colorado Buffaloes football team is a massive one. However, one of the biggest names is linebacker Demouy Kennedy, who came to Boulder from Alabama along with defensive coordinator Charles Kelly.

Kennedy is set to be a staple on the Buffs’ defense and early on, he has been impressing everybody at camp. Linebackers coach Andre’ Hart, for example, has loved what he has seen early on from Kennedy. When asked about Kennedy on Tuesday, Hart joked that his speed “gets me paid” and even brought up a rep where he undercut running back Dylan Edwards on a wheel route (h/t Jake Schwanitz of DNVR Buffs).

With the way things have gone so far during camp, Kennedy shouldn’t have a problem finding playing time this year, and it helps that he already has familiarity with Kelly from his Crimson Tide days.

All eyes will be on the Buffs early on, and the defense is going to be an important part of the team’s success.

Transfers making strong impressions for Buffs early on

A few incoming transfers have been making strong impressions early on

The Colorado Buffaloes’ long list of incoming transfer players will surely make a massive difference in year one under new coach Deion Sanders.

Jackson State QB Shedeur Sanders and cornerback Travis Hunter are the two biggest names of the portal season for Colorado, and both will have an immediate impact.

However, a couple of other transfer payers have been making strong impressions early on, according to Clint Brewster of 247Sports.

Those players include former USF WR Jimmy Horn Jr., Dartmouth DL Shane Cokes and Florida OL Yousef Mugharbil. One other player turning heads and expected to be a significant addition is Alabama LB Demouy Kennedy

Cokes should be an immediate contributor on the defensive line, which is refreshing after Colorado had a disastrous year on that side of the ball.

On offense, Horn figures to be one of Shedeur Sanders’ favorite offensive weapons.

However, there might still be some question marks regarding Mugharbil. He was a four-star recruit out of high school but didn’t play a single snap during his two seasons with the Gators. Nonetheless, all of those players, and Kennedy, are making impressions early on.

The spring game will be in April and with an anticipated sold-out crowd, the excitement is very real in Boulder once again.

Former Alabama LB Demouy Kennedy transferring to Colorado

Several weeks ago, former five-star linebacker Demouy Kennedy entered the transfer portal. On Wednesday, he announced his transfer to Colorado.

Former five-star and Alabama linebacker Demouy Kennedy announced that he is transferring to Colorado on Wednesday. He posted the news on his Instagram account.

Kennedy joined Alabama as a member of the 2020 recruiting class. He played sparingly in three seasons at linebacker. He tallied just eight tackles. His primary role came on special teams on the Tide. During his junior season, he was a crucial part of the Tide’s special teams unit but suffered a season-ending injury.

Now, he is headed to Boulder to play for Deion Sanders. Colorado has become a hot commodity for players that have entered the transfer portal. The Buffaloes are trying to build something special. Kennedy will help their cause of being a competitive team in the Pac-12.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Kennedy’s college career as well as other Alabama football news.

Alabama reserve linebacker Demouy Kennedy has entered the NCAA transfer portal

Demouy Kennedy is the latest member of the Crimson Tide to enter the transfer portal.

The NCAA window for players to enter the portal this time around will close tomorrow, Jan. 18.

Plenty of Alabama players have already entered the portal and in most cases, found new places to call home.

Late Tuesday evening, reserve linebacker Demouy Kennedy became the latest member of the Crimson Tide to enter the portal.

Kennedy was a four-star prospect that signed with Alabama as a part of the 2020 class.

Kennedy missed a large portion of the 2022 season with a knee injury that he suffered against Arkansas while playing on special teams.

The Theodore Alabama native will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Slade Bolden training at RB per Nick Saban

Wide receiver Slade Bolden is now training at running back according to coach Nick Saban!

The question has been in the back of the minds of the Alabama faithful ever since the news that Roydell Williams would be out for the season. Who will be the next emergency option at running back?

Thursday night on his weekly radio show “Hey Coach”, Nick Saban finally addressed the issue. Wide receiver Slade Bolden has been training at running back according to coach Saban.

The staff had already moved linebacker Demouy Kennedy and wide receiver, Christian Leary, to running back after the injuries to Jase McClellan and Camar Wheaton.

Now Slade Bolden has made the move and that is interesting for a couple of different reasons. The first is that Bolden is the starter in the slot for the Tide. Could we see a young wide receiver have a more prominent role at that position now? The second is that Bolden is probably more naturally gifted to run between the tackles than to create in the open space.

At any rate, the staff has had to get creative with all of the injuries at the running back position. Fortunately, Brian Robinson Jr. and Trey Sanders remain healthy and will likely be the two main backs in the rotation the remainder of the season.

Stay tuned to Roll Tide Wire for all the latest on the Crimson Tide!

Alabama player snapshot: No. 37 Demouy Kennedy

Freshman linebacker Demouy Kennedy is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

As we continue through the offseason, Roll Tide Wire has decided to bring fans a quick snapshot of each scholarship player listed on Alabama’s 2020 football roster.

Each day, we’ll release two player profiles giving fans a glimpse into the players who will be available this upcoming season. Whether that’s size, classification, hometowns or recruiting rankings coming out of high school, we’ve got you covered.

Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.

Next up on the list is freshman linebacker Demouy Kennedy out of Theodore (Ala.).

Demouy Kennedy, Inside Linebacker

Height: 6-3 / Weight: 215

Class: Freshman

Hometown: Theodore (Ala.)

High School: Theodore High School

HS ranking (247Sports): 4-star / No. 38 overall / No. 3 ILB / No. 1 ALA

HS ranking (Rivals): 5-star / No. 34 overall / No. 4 ILB / No. 1 ALA

Analysis: The inside linebacker position has been heavily covered over the last several player profile articles, but Demouy Kennedy shouldn’t be a forgotten man amongst the group.

The former Theodore High School standout, the same school that produced another for Alabama great linebacker C.J. Mosley, is a gifted athlete who brings a complete profile to the position.

Granted at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, Kennedy could stand to add more weight to his frame in order to be able to hold up against power offenses in the SEC, but that should come with time. Otherwise, he’s got everything that you could want in an off-ball linebacker.

He’s got sideline-to-sideline range, he’s an some ability as an off-ball blitzer and he shows a lot of promise in coverage — although, he’s still got some work to do as far as his situational awareness when covering his zone.

Like with Jackson Bratton, the 2020 season might not be his year as far as on-the-field impact on defense, but he could find himself in a top special teams role before transitioning into a starting or rotational role at linebacker sometime in 2021.

National Signing Day has come and gone, and Alabama’s 2020 recruiting class if officially set. There were 25 total members (26, if you count North Carolina grad transfer tight end Carl Tucker) with talent across the board.

In order for fans to get to know the Crimson Tide’s newest players, we have laid out a “get to know them” article for each member.

The next player we’re taking a look at is five-star inside linebacker Demouy Kennedy.

Demouy Kennedy, Inside Linebacker

Hometown: Theodore (Ala.)

High school: Theodore

Size: 6-3, 215 (6-3, 215 on official Alabama roster)

247Sports composite ranking: 4-star / No. 38 overall / No. 3 ILB

247Sports ranking: 4-star / No. 35 overall / No. 3 ILB

ESPN ranking: 4-star / 84 overall grade / No. 7 OLB

Commitment date: June 6, 2019

Signing date: Dec. 18, 2019

Where does he fit in? Kennedy has a chance to be one of the impact freshmen in Alabama’s 2020 recruiting class. Not only is he an impressive athlete, he fills an very important need for the Crimson Tide — inside linebacker.

Dylan Moses choosing to return for his senior season did put a damper on Kennedy’s outlook in Year 1, but that doesn’t mean that he won’t make contributions. In fact, he could even still see signing reps if developments aren’t made with some of the other young inside linebackers on the roster.

At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, Kennedy will need to add anywhere for 15 to 20 pounds to be able to better hold up against SEC offenses, but his aggressive style and athleticism should help him find some sort of role early — whether that’s in certain packages, special teams, a starting role or some combination of those things.

It’s still possible that the defense will get back Dylan Moses if he chooses to forgo the NFL draft. That development would probably mean that Kennedy’s biggest impact would come on special teams in Year 1, but he is expected to excel either way.

At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, Kennedy will need to add anywhere for 15 to 20 pounds to be able to better hold up against SEC offenses, but his aggressive style and athleticism should help him find some sort of role early — whether that’s in certain packages, special teams, a starting role or a combination of those things.
