WATCH: Colorado pulls out the trickery as Jimmy Horn Jr. throws TD pass to Dylan Edwards

Colorado pulled out a trick play that resulted in an early touchdown against Utah

Jimmy Horn Jr. enjoyed an impressive first half in Colorado’s season finale at Utah.

With Xavier Weaver, Shedeur Sanders and several other key players out, Horn has been asked to do a little more for the Buffs this Saturday. In the game’s first 30 minutes, the former South Florida wide receiver caught two passes for 18 yards and also returned a kickoff 41 yards.

Horn’s best moment came midway through the second quarter when he caught a backward pass from Ryan Staub and slung it downfield to running back Dylan Edwards for a 30-yard touchdown.

Check out some of the best social media reactions to Colorado’s successful trick play:

Jimmy Horn Jr. sees Buffs as ‘America’s Team’

Jimmy Horn Jr. is confident that Colorado has become “America’s Team”

The Colorado Buffaloes are a popular topic in the world of college football, even more so after their opening game victory against TCU.

Deion Sanders, Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter have only gotten bigger after the thrilling win, and the home opener against Nebraska has everybody talking.

Former USF wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. was on Wednesday asked if the Buffs are “America’s Team”, and he gave an obvious answer (h/t Yahoo Sports).

“It gotta be… We popping right now. We America’s team but there are still doubters out there that want to see us fail.”

The Buffs have certainly stolen national headlines everywhere and that will only continue moving forward.

We’re only two weeks into the college football season, but the Buffs already have Heisman Trophy candidates and are now projected to reach a bowl game. Plus, Coach Prime earned some huge compliments from Jim Harbaugh.

So, it’s safe to say that this just might be America’s Team.

CU Buffs’ fast-tempo offense a perfect fit for Jimmy Horn Jr.

Expect to see a lot of No. 5 this season

Considering its poor offensive results from last season, Colorado needed an infusion of talent on that side of the ball. Enter Jimmy Horn Jr.

Horn came to Boulder in December as a transfer wide receiver by way of the South Florida Bulls. Thus far, the speedy wideout has made a name for himself as a fixture for the Buffaloes’ up-tempo offense under new coordinator Sean Lewis. Horn has been building a strong rapport with new quarterback Shedeur Sanders, leading many to believe that Horn will be a starter this fall.

During CU’s fall sports media day, I asked Horn about his role in the offense and the impact he can make in 2023:

“I love this offense,” Horn said. “It’s a very fast-tempo offense. I can see myself in this offense getting at least about eight touches a game, eight touches or more, and being an impact player for the offense, both me and all the other weapons around me.”

Three Buffs earn preseason All-Pac-12 honors

A trio of #cubuffs earned preseason All-Pac-12 honors

A trio of CU Buffs received preseason All-Pac-12 honors on Tuesday.

As voted on by the media, Travis Hunter earned first-team defensive back, first-team all-purpose/specials teams and was an honorable mention pick at wide receiver; Mark Vassett (punter) and Jimmy Horn Jr. (return specialist) were also honorable mentions at their respective positions.

All three are entering their first seasons at Colorado and in the Pac-12. Hunter, a former No. 1 overall prospect, followed Deion Sanders from Jackson State while Vassett transferred in from Louisville and Horn from USF.

Elsewhere in the Pac-12, Utah owned an impressive six first-team reps, and former Buff Nikko Reed was named an honorable mention at defensive back ahead of his first season at Oregon.

The annual Pac-12 media day will be held on Friday in Las Vegas.

Every CU Buffs player to earn their jersey number so far this spring

These players have all earned their jersey number so far this spring

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders does things a little unorthodox at times. None of his players started spring football with numbers on their jerseys. Rather, they have to earn them with their play and work ethic.

With the spring game coming up and spring practice underway, quite a few players have already earned jersey numbers.

A few of the big-name transfers have their numbers sealed, but a few other players are notably missing. It’s a different approach, but it will be interesting to see if it pays off.

Nonetheless, here’s a rundown of all the Buffs who have earned their numbers so far this spring:

Travis Hunter opens up about focusing on receiver this spring

Travis Hunter gave his thoughts on playing mostly receiver this spring

We’ve been getting to know a slew of new faces ever since Deion Sanders signed on to be the next head football coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. Fans have heard from Coach Prime himself, members of the staff, new quarterback Shedeur Sanders and a few other players as well.

On Thursday, another box was marked off the list as five-star transfer Travis Hunter spoke with the media for the first time. Hunter, the No. 1 overall high school recruit in the 2022 class, shocked the college football world last year by committing to play for Coach Prime at Jackson State. This offseason, he decided to stick with both Deion and Shedeur Sanders by following them to Colorado.

Here is what the newest Buffaloes’ star had to say after practice on Thursday:

Best quotes from Brett Bartolone’s Thursday media availability

Brett Bartolone met with the media after practice on Thursday. Here’s what was said:

The Colorado Buffaloes are ramping back up after a week off during spring break. The pads have come on and coaches have been riding the team hard in preparation for a sold-out Folsom Field crowd on April 22 for Black & Gold Day.

After practice on Thursday, the media spoke with wide receivers coach Brett Bartolone, who followed head coach Deion Sanders to Boulder after spending last season as Jackson State’s offensive coordinator.

Bartolone will be an invaluable piece in helping his position group learn OC Sean Lewis’ offense. He should also help the other parts of the offense transition from what JSU did to the attack that Lewis will employ.

Here are a few highlights from Bartolone’s Thursday media availability:

Jimmy Horn Jr. the first Buff to earn jersey number

Jimmy Horn Jr. became the first Buff to earn a jersey number

In a somewhat old-school approach, Deion Sanders has decided that his CU football players will have to earn their desired jersey numbers. The Buffs have worn numberless jerseys so far in spring camp with the hope of creating some competition for the most sought-after digits.

Jersey No. 5 is now off the table for at least offensive players, though, as we learned on Wednesday that Jimmy Horn Jr. became the first Buff to earn a number. Horn said that he has been wearing the No. 5 since his early days playing Pop Warner and throughout his two seasons at South Florida.

We’ve been hearing great things about Horn this spring and it’s no surprise that he’s the first to be given a number.

Hopefully, returning defensive back Tyrin Taylor can also impress Coach Prime enough to get his No. 5 back as well…

Colorado spring football: Five Buffs turning heads early

With the first week of spring practice complete, here are five Buffs who’ve been turning heads early on

The first week of spring practice is in the books for Colorado and head coach Deion Sanders.

So far, we’ve been hearing mostly positive returns from the new-look Buffs. There’s still plenty of work to be done regarding learning new playbooks and figuring out who fits best where, but I’d chalk March up as a productive month, and the hope is that April follows suit.

Additionally, a few players, including a pair of returning Buffs, have shined especially bright early in camp. Four spring practices into the Coach Prime era, below are five Buffs who’ve been turning heads in a variety of ways:

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll gave Coach Prime a recruiting tip at the NFL Honors

Per ESPN, Coach Prime was given a recruiting tip by New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll

The Colorado Buffaloes have taken the recruiting world by storm since head coach Deion Sanders was hired in December. CU has shot up the rankings across every recruiting website as a constant line of transfers and high school all-stars all want to be a part of what Coach Prime is building in Boulder.

ESPN took notice as Adam Rittenberg and Kyle Bonagura took stock of Coach Prime’s first 100 days at Colorado. It’s hard not to notice what Sanders has done in the way of recruiting in that short of a time frame. CU has stocked up on top-end talent from the transfer portal and the high school ranks in Travis Hunter, Cormani McClain, Dylan Edwards, Adam Hopkins, Omarion Miller, Jimmy Horn Jr. and Seydou Traore, to name a few commits.

People outside of Boulder are even offering help to Coach Prime, including New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll (h/t ESPN):

At the NFL Honors ceremony during Super Bowl week, Sanders presented the AP Coach of the Year award to the New York Giants’ Brian Daboll while wearing a black suit and a gold pocket square, CU colors. As Sanders exited the stage, Daboll told him about a player he should consider at Colorado. Sanders immediately got Daboll on the phone with his chief of recruiting.

“That doesn’t just mean that he respects me, and he would love for this kid to play for me,” Sanders said. “You know how much noise we’ve got to be making right now, for that gentleman, as we’re walking off the stage, saying, ‘I’ve got a dawg for you.’

“I said, ‘I ain’t hard to find, Coach.'”
