Georgia signs top 5 safety Demello Jones

Georgia signs top 5 safety Demello Jones

Georgia football signed 28 players on National Signing Day. Even though it was only the start of early signing period, the class is seemingly finalized following a near perfect day for the Bulldogs.

Georgia’s 2024 class finishes at No. 1 in the nation and features some of the most highly-touted recruits in the Kirby Smart era.

Among a star-studded defensive group is four-star safety Demello Jones, out of Swainsboro (Ga.) High School.

Jones (6-foot-1, 176 pounds) is rated as the No. 5 safety, the No. 10 player in the state and the No. 63 player overall in his class, per 247Sports.

Jones was a two-way star at Swainsboro, serving as a ball carrier, wide receiver and safety.

His most impressive performance came this year against Prince Avenue Christian in the 1A Div 1 GHSA State Championship game. Jones scored four times in that game, including a 98-yard pick-six, in the 49-32 loss.

Pair Jones’ skills with five-star safety signee K.J. Bolden and the Bulldogs have one of the most versatile incoming safety groups in the nation.

Notre Dame makes top 10 for four-star wide receiver

The Irish at least still have a seat at the table

When [autotag]Chansi Stuckey[/autotag] joined Notre Dame‘s staff as wide receivers coach one year ago he was tasked with upgrading the talent at the position.  Through one recruiting class he’s taken a big step in the right direction but now he must start to stack classes to build some depth as well.

Stuckey and Notre Dame got some good news recently about a four-star receiver in the 2024 class. [autotag]Demello Jones[/autotag] of Swainsboro, Georgia released his top 10 schools and Notre Dame made the cut.

That’s not to say they’re the favorite by any means as Jones has his home-state Georgia also included as well as the likes of North Carolina, Miami, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio State, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt.

It still feels like Notre Dame ultimately winning this one would be a rather big upset, but in order to do so they have to at least have a seat at the table and they can still say they have that.

4-star Georgia commit took another visit to Tennessee over the weekend

4-star Georgia commit Demello Jones took another visit to Tennessee over the weekend

2024 four-star Georgia commit Demello Jones visited the Tennessee Volunteers over the weekend. This marked his third trip to Knoxville in the last three months.

The defensive back out of Swainsboro, Georgia committed to UGA in March. He recently told 247Sports that his recruitment will  “still be open” moving forward, but that he’s “leaning a lot toward Georgia.”

Jones ranks as the nation’s No. 91 overall player, No. 6 ranked safety and as the No. 13 ranked player in the state of Georgia for the 2024 class.

Jones has been busy the past few weekends. He visited Tennessee on May 27, then was in Athens on June 2, Alabama on June 9 and then Tennessee again this past weekend.

Jones told 247Sports that Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama round out his top-three, but Georgia is still the No. 1.

Jones has visited Tennessee three times since April, but wants to return at least once more to catch a Vols football game this fall.

Jones’ Swainsboro team went 13-1 in 2022, making it to the final of Georgia’s Class A Division 1 playoffs. Last season, he rushed for 1,279 yards (with an average of 10.5 yards per carry) and 20 touchdowns. He also had 382 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns on 14 catches. Defensively, Jones recorded 44 tackles and six pass breakups.

In addition to football, Jones also runs track and plays basketball for Swainsboro.

Gators coach checking in with Georgia DB commit on Wednesday

The Gators are looking to flip this blue-chip Peach State defensive back standout.

Wednesday is a big day on the road for Florida football’s outside linebackers coach Mike Peterson as he continues to log the miles on the recruiting trail after a stop in Jacksonville. Among a trio of prep prospects on his agenda for the day is current Georgia Bulldogs commit [autotag]Demello Jones[/autotag] out of Swainsboro (Georgia).

The 6-foot-1-inch, 176-pound defensive back committed to the ‘Dawgs back in March but has since left the door open for other suitors. He used that opportunity to swing through to see the Miami Hurricanes and Tennessee Volunteers last month with official visit season still on the horizon. Jones has an OV planned in Knoxville during the last weekend of June and the Alabama Crimson Tide has also been in the conversation for a visit next month.

Jones is ranked No. 90 overall and No. 7 at safety nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at No. 83 and 11 at cornerback nationally.

Friday Night Notes: Georgia’s new 4-star Athlete, Colorado’s spring recruiting blitz and more

A look at the latest high school football recruiting news around the U.S.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2024 to ’25 and beyond.

The king stays the king. And right now, the kings of college football are the Georgia Bulldogs, who are dominating the competition both on the field and in the recruiting game. Georgia is coming off their second consecutive national championship as well as putting together the No. 2 ranked recruiting class of 2023. Neither is an accident, especially since they spent about 50% more on recruiting than any other Power 5 program in 2022.

While it’s no guarantee of success, outspending your opponents by a wide margin is a strategy that tends to work more often than it fails. This morning Georgia added another significant asset to their future plans – a piece that can fit in various ways.

Here’s how Swainsboro (Ga.) four-star athlete Demello Jones announced his commitment to the Bulldogs.

Jones (6-foot-1, 176 pounds) was a popular recruit, getting offers from 27 different programs. According to On3, his top 10 schools were Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Kirby Smart is getting an extremely versatile two-way playmaker in Jones. Last season he ran for 1,279 yards and scored 20 touchdowns on the ground. As a receiver, he totaled 384 yards and seven more scores. He also threw one touchdown pass. Meanwhile, on defense, he posted a sack, two tackles for a loss, a fumble recovery and six pass breakups.

Going by the composite rankings, Jones is the 18th-best athlete in his class and is No. 28 overall in the state. He makes for 10 hard commits in Georgia’s class of 2024, which ranks No. 1 in the nation.

Alabama lands in top-10 for 2024 ATH Demello Jones

He has played multiple positions for Swainsboro High School this past season, as he got snaps at wide receiver, quarterback, and cornerback. His impact helped lead his squad to a 13-1 record and a bid in the Class 1A state championship.

During his junior campaign, he had 122 carries for 1,279 yards and 20 touchdowns. Jones also hauled in 14 receptions for 382 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Ohio State advances in top group for 2024 Georgia athlete

This isn’t the last cut, but the Buckeyes advance #GoBucks

Anytime a top high school wide receiver gets an [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] offer, you know they can play the position. Offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag]’s track record is enough for those players to understand there’s a pipeline from Columbus to the NFL.

The Buckeyes can’t take all of the receivers, so when one is also an athlete who can play a different position, it makes that recruit even more tantalizing. Receiver skills in the secondary is a good quality, and that’s what Georgia’s [autotag]Demello Jones[/autotag] offers.

At 6 feet, 1 inch and 176 pounds, Jones played wide receiver, quarterback and cornerback for his Swainsboro High School team this past fall. It’s impressive. The good news for Ohio State is it has made it past another cut in Jones’ recruiting list, making his top 10.

There is still a ways to go in Jones recruitment, but getting to this point is a good sign. He is ranked as the No. 23 athlete and 194th overall prospect according to the 247Sports composite.
