Former Panthers LB reportedly signing with Buccaneers

LB Deion Jones, who played in 13 games for the Panthers last season, is set to join the Buccaneers’ practice squad.

A former Carolina Panthers defender may be trying to complete the full circuit through the NFC South.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are planning to sign linebacker Deion Jones to their practice squad. Jones, who started his pro career with the Atlanta Falcons, spent the 2023 campaign as a member of the Panthers.

Jones was selected by the Falcons in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. The LSU product went on to earn a third-place finish in the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2016 and made his first Pro Bowl the following season in 2017.

Over six seasons in Atlanta, Jones recorded 652 tackles, 11.0 sacks and 11 interceptions.

He’d then be traded to the Cleveland Browns for a 2024 sixth-round pick in October of 2022. In his 11 games for Cleveland—Jones totaled 44 combined tackles and 2.5 sacks.

The Panthers signed Jones in July of 2023. He’d go on to play in 13 games for Carolina.

Jones was most recently a member of the Buffalo Bills, who released him back on Aug. 25.

12 players Broncos should claim off waivers or sign as free agents

Irv Smith headlines this list of players the Broncos should consider adding after NFL roster cuts.

NFL teams set their initial 53-man rosters on Tuesday after more than 1,000 transactions over the last two days.

Players cut with fewer than four accrued seasons are subject to the waiver wire. Veteran players with four or more accrued seasons become free agents when they are released.

After the Denver Broncos made 30 roster moves today, we’ve put together a quick list of 12 players the team should claim off waivers or sign as free agents, depending on the players’ respective statuses.

Waiver claims will be processed at 10:00 a.m. MT on Wednesday. Veterans are eligible to sign right away as free agents.

Players Broncos should sign after roster cuts

1. OL Ricky Stromberg: Former third-round pick with experience at center and guard.

2. OL Kyle Hergel: After being picked third overall in the CFL draft, Hergel opted to go to training camp with the New Orleans Saints instead. He can play guard and tackle.

3. OL La’el Collins: He’s dealt with injuries, but Collins has 86 career starts on his resume as a tackle and guard.

4. OL Matt Hennessy: A former third-round pick with 22 career starts at center.

5. OL Julién Davenport: He has 32 career starts at tackle as a former fourth-round pick.

6. OL Germain Ifedi: Former first-round pick with 83 starts at guard and tackle.

7. OT Alex Leatherwood: Another former first-round pick, but he’s been a backup since starting 17 games as a rookie in 2021.

8. TE Donald Parham: Denver could use some help at tight end.

9. TE Irv Smith: Broncos GM George Paton was part of the Vikings’ front office that used a second-round pick to select Smith in 2019.

10. FB Jack Colletto: He’s been compared to Taysom Hill and the Broncos hosted Colletto for a pre-draft visit this spring. After cutting fullback Michael Burton on Tuesday, perhaps coach Sean Payton could find a role for Collette.

11. LB Deion Jones: A former second-round pick with 731 career in tackles in 109 games (91 starts) in the NFL.

12. LB Damien Wilson: He’s a former fourth-round pick with 419 career tackles in 127 games (73 starts).

Bonus — LB Easton Gibbs: After hosting him before the draft, perhaps Denver will now attempt to add Gibbs to its practice squad.

We will track all potential signings on Broncos Wire.

Former LSU linebacker Deion Jones signs 1-year deal with Buffalo Bills

Deion Jones has found a new NFL home for the 2024 season.

Former LSU linebacker [autotag]Deion Jones[/autotag] has found a new home for the 2024 NFL season.

On Thursday, Jones signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Jones spent the 2023 season with the Panthers, beginning the year on the practice squad after he failed to make the 53-man roster but was added to the active roster in September.

He appeared in 13 games, starting three, and he totaled 35 tackles, a sack, an interception and six pass deflections.

Jones was a second-round pick for the Falcons in 2016, playing his first seven seasons with the team before he was traded midway through the 2022 campaign to the Browns, with whom he finished the season.

Jones is just 29 years old, but the 2017 Pro Bowler has made just eight starts over the past two seasons. He’ll hope for a career resurgence as he heads to Buffalo this offseason.

Former Browns LB Deion Jones signs one-year deal with Bills

A former Browns linebacker finds a new home

Deion Jones, who played linebacker for the Cleveland Browns during the 2022 season, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills.

During his tenure in Cleveland, traded for in-season after multiple injuries in their linebacker room, Jones racked up 44 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one interception for the Browns.

After his departure, the Browns ran their linebacker room back with a healthy Anthony Walker Jr., Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Sione Takitaki, and Tony Fields II instead of bringing Jones back onto the roster.

Jones was a standout linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons out of LSU, but after multiple injuries, he has not quite been the same player. The Browns acquired him for the price of a late-round pick swap before he inevitably signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers.

Now entering year nine, he gets just another one-year deal here as well as he heads to his fourth team in three years.

Former Panthers LB Deion Jones reportedly signing with Bills

LB Deion Jones, who appeared in 13 games for the Panthers in 2023, is reportedly signing with the Bills.

[Insert Carolina-to-Buffalo pipeline joke here.]

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, free-agent linebacker Deion Jones is signing a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. The 29-year-old defender spent the 2023 campaign as a member of the Carolina Panthers.

Jones was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. The LSU product went on to notch a third-place finish in the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2016 and made his first Pro Bowl in 2017.

In his six seasons manning the middle for Carolina’s NFC South foes, Jones tallied 652 tackles, 11.0 sacks and 11 interceptions. He’d then be traded to the Cleveland Browns for a 2024 sixth-round pick in October of 2022 and went on to play in 11 games—totaling 44 combined tackles and 2.5 sacks.

The Panthers signed Jones last July, released him during final roster cuts in August and brought him back up to the active roster in late September. He ended up appearing in 13 games for the team this past season—recording 35 tackles, a sack and six passes defensed.

Full list of 2024 Panthers free agents

The Panthers currently have 26 players slated for free agency in 2024.

Things have changed a bit since the last time we brought you this free agent list.

A few weeks back, the Carolina Panthers held on to a few of their own—re-signing tight end Stephen Sullivan and defensive linemen Nick Thurman LaBryan Ray to fresh deals.

So, let’s take an updated look at the team’s pending 2024 free agents.

2024 free agents who may be playing their final game for the Panthers in Week 18

Sunday will not only represent the end of a brutal 2023 season for the Carolina Panthers, but it may also mark the end of a few eras.

Carolina Panthers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars game recap: Everything we know

The Panthers dropped plenty of balls on New Year’s Eve.

Well, it turns out that Sunday’s game at EverBank Stadium really was between the Washington Generals and the Harlem Globetrotters.

Here’s everything we know from the Carolina Panthers’ New Year’s Eve loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars:

Best and worst PFF grades from Panthers’ Week 12 loss to Titans

Bryce Young still finished with one of the best offensive grades for the Panthers in Sunday’s loss to the Titans.

We usually put these things out much earlier in the day. But, uh, a few things kinda sorta happened this morning.

Third time’s the charm? Derek Carr seeking first career win vs. Falcons

Third time’s the charm? Derek Carr is seeking his first career win against the Falcons after two previous defeats:

Derek Carr accomplished a lot in his nine years with the Raiders, but the quarterback has yet to beat every team in the NFL. Now with the New Orleans Saints, he’ll have an opportunity to notch his first win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday after twice coming up short.

Carr’s first loss to Atlanta came back in 2016, when he threw for 299 yards with 3 touchdown passes without a turnover, but it wasn’t enough (the Falcons triumphed 35-28, pulling away with a big fourth-quarter scoring output). It was an admirable performance in a losing effort.

Things weren’t as impressive in his second outing. The Falcons bulldozed Carr’s Raiders 43-6 in 2020, nearly three years ago to the day of their last meeting (Nov. 29). Carr was sacked three times and threw an interception to Falcons linebacker Deion Jones which was returned 67 yards for a touchdown, also losing three fumbles. It wasn’t much to write home about.

So hopefully Carr can bounce back and take care of the Falcons on Sunday for the Saints. He’s had two opportunities to get his first-ever wins over other teams earlier this season, but he exited both games with injuries. He left the Green Bay Packers game after taking the lead but was pulled from the Minnesota Vikings matchup while facing a steep deficit. Let’s hope for smoother sailing on Sunday in Atlanta.
