Fantasy football waiver wire after Week 14: Target Jalen Hurts and Phillip Lindsay

It’s a bare week. But there are some decent streaming options.

The waiver wire is feeling a little bare this week, but if you’re deep into the playoffs you may not need much in the way of help. And there’s good news for anyone that needs a quarterback or a tight end: the waiver wire seems to have options. We like Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Vikings tight end Irv Smith. And then there’s a mix of receivers and running backs worth consideration.

We’ve only listed players that are owned in 50% or fewer of leagues. But it’s always worth checking out your options to see if someone worthwhile has popped onto waivers.

Former Chiefs RB DeAndre Washington could be Dolphins lead back in Week 14

The Chiefs traded Washington to the Dolphins earlier this year.

The Miami Dolphins placed RB Myles Gaskin on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday, leaving the team with few options at the position for the Week 14 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. One option they’ll likely have available on Sunday is former Chiefs RB DeAndre Washington.

Washington, who was acquired from the Chiefs at the trade deadline earlier this season, seems to be the odds on favorite to lead the Miami backfield. A former teammate of Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech, Washington was buried on the depth chart in Kansas City. He can potentially earn the Chiefs a pick swap as part of the conditions of the trade.

Washington hasn’t played much for Miami so far this season. He has 48 offensive snaps, totaling 18 carries for 56 yards. Most of that production came in a win over the New York Jets in Week 12, where he had 13 carries for 49 yards. Last week, Washington missed the Dolphins game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a hamstring injury. He was limited during Wednesday and Thursday practices for Miami, but a full participant on Friday.

Signs point to Washington being good to play and receive the lion’s share of the snaps on Sunday, but they’ll have other options available too. Positionlees rookie Lynn Bowden Jr., fullback Patrick Laird, and another ex-Chiefs RB in Elijah McGuire are among the players they’ll likely mix in. Still, things are shaping up to be a classic revenge game for Washington, who’ll look to prove that Kansas City was wrong to trade him.

Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

QB Daniel Jones – Hamstring
QB Teddy Bridgewater – Arm
RB Josh Jacobs – Ankle
RB Dalvin Cook – Ankle (returned)
RB Phillip Lindsay – Knee
WR D.J. Moore – Leg
WR Olamide Zaccheaus – Toe

Chasing Ambulances

QB Daniel Jones – Left in the third quarter with what was called a “serious hamstring injury.” An MRI will determine the prognosis but early expectations are that he could miss this week’s matchup with the Seahawks in Seattle. Colt McCoy finished the game with only 6-of-10 completions for 31 yards. The 34-year-old McCoy only started seven games over the last nine years but at least the Seahawks secondary is weak.

QB Teddy Bridgewater – Injured his arm on the final play of the game but later said his arm was “sideswiped” and that it wasn’t serious.

RB Josh Jacobs – Injured his ankle during the blowout loss to the Falcons. He lost a fumble near the end of the third quarter and did not play again, but it was already a lost cause at 30-6 entering into the fourth quarter. There was little said about it afterward, but if he were injured, then Devontae Booker would inherit the starting role this week at the Jets.

RB Phillip Lindsay – Left the loss to the Saints with a knee injury. HC Vic Fangio would only say that he “tweaked his knee a little bit.” Royce Freeman ran for 50 yards on eight rushes working as a wildcat quarterback and could see more work if Lindsay’s injury keeps him out against the Chiefs this week, but the Broncos offense is already sputtering and Melvin Gordon gets the most work regardless of what Lindsay did.

WR D.J. Moore – Had to be carried from the field after a non-contact leg injury. These types of injuries are rarely minor and if he misses time, Robby Anderson and Curtis Samuel will see an increase to their targets once they return from their bye this week.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

RB Alvin Kamara – Week two with Taysom Hill and Kamara was no better with only 11 runs for 54 yards and one catch for a one-yard loss. Latavius Murray ran for 124 yards and two scores but the Broncos weren’t putting up much fight and Kamara wasn’t needed. They’ll need him more this week in Atlanta. At least, theoretically.

QB Kendall Hinton – The Broncos ran out of eligible quarterbacks and dialed up the practice squad wideout that had one year as a quarterback in college. He only completed one-of-nine passes for 13 yards and threw two interceptions. He was the first Denver quarterback to throw no completions in the first half since Tim Tebow in 2011.

Falcon’s backfield – Todd Gurley was out with a sore knee, and Brian Hill had the start. He ran for 55 yards on 13 carries but they also relied on Ito Smith for 12 rushes for 65 yards and one score. Smith had nine of his carries in the final couple of series, so Hill remains the primary when Gurley is out. The Falcons already led 30-6 before Smith began to run the ball much.

QB Derek Carr – Faced the No. 32 ranked defense versus quarterbacks and flopped hard with only 215 yards and one interception in a game that the Raiders just went through the motions. Probably an after-effect of losing to the Chiefs in Week 11.

RB Austin Ekeler – His first action since Week 4 and there was no “easing” him back into the game flow. Ekeler ran 14 times for 44 yards and added a season-high 11 receptions for 85 yards. Joshua Kelley (7-35, TD) was given the goal-line plunge, but mostly because he broke a 33-yard run to reach the BUF-8 yard line.

WR Gabriel Davis – The rookie already scored four times this season, including four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown in Week 9 against the Seahawks. With John Brown on injured reserve, Davis led the Bills with three catches for 79 yards and a score against the Chargers. Stefon Diggs was held to 39 yards on seven receptions.

QB Brandon Allen – The Bengals opted for Allen after losing Joe Burrow for the season. He only completed 17-of-29 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown. The only bright spot was that Tee Higgins (5-44, TD) caught the touchdown though it was in the final two minutes of the game.

WR T.Y. Hilton – The Colts No. 1 wideout (in theory) finally scored for the first time this year when he posted a season-best four catches for 81 yards against the visiting Titans. He plays in Houston this week with a good chance to shine again.

QB Mike Glennon – The Jaguars had enough of Jake Luton and turned to Glennon this week versus the Browns. He passed for 235 yards and two scores even though DJ Chark and Chris Conley were out. The rookie Collin Johnson led the team with four receptions for 96 yards and one touchdown from a 46-yard catch.

WR Adam Thielen – The Vikings hoped that Thielen could test negative for COVID-19 in time to play  the Panthers on Sunday but he was unable and was made inactive. In his place, Obisi Johnson led the team with seven catches for 74 yards while Justin Jefferson turned in two scores on his seven receptions for 70 yards.

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick – With Tua Tagovailoa out this week, Fitzpatrick threw for 257 yards and two scores in the win over the Jets.  The rookie had swelling in his thumb and is not feared to miss several weeks. If that happens, Fitzpatrick faces three straight home games versus the Bengals, Chiefs and Patriots.

RB DeAndre Washington – The Dolphins still have Myles Gaskin on injured reserve and Salvon Ahmed missed the game with a shoulder injury. Matt Breida ran eight times for 36 yards while Washington was given 13 rushes to gain 49 yards and he added two catches for 11 yards. Gaskin may be returning and Ahmed’s shoulder could improve. It all draws a more confusing picture of the Miami backfield for the rest of the season.

RB Raheem Mostert – Was activated from the injured reserve after missing six weeks. While he was considered questionable and his role downplayed by HC Kyle Shanahan, Mostert led the 49ers with 16 carries for 43 yards and one touchdown and two catches for no gain. Jeff Wilson also returned after missing five games and turned in 12 runs for 43 yards. Jerick McKinnon only handled three runs and two catches.

RB Cam Akers – He’s still the third back to get into the game but the rookie outplayed Darrell Henderson (10-19) and Malcolm Brown (3-4) when he ran for 84 yards and one touchdown on nine carries.  He gained 61-yards in a fourth-quarter run and was allowed to punch in the score. Henderson hasn’t shown the same form he had earlier in the season and Brown has been used more as a short-yardage back. The committee approach is still in strong use, but the rookie Akers is the only back flashing any spark lately.

RB David Montgomery – He missed Week 10 with a concussion and returned to a season-best 11 carries for 103 yards against the Packers. He broke a 57-yard run and added five receptions for  40 yards and a touchdown. It was his first 100-yard effort and a season-high for receiving yards as well. And that came with Mitchell Trubisky back as the starting quarterback.

Huddle player of the week

Tyreek Hill  –  Some weeks it isn’t close. Hill burned the Buccaneers, catching 13 of 16 targets for 269 yards and three touchdowns. That ties for the No. 15 most receiving yardage in any game and Hill already totaled 210 yards on eight catches at halftime. That’s a cool 57.9 points in a reception-point league. Hill already scored 13 times this year and leads all fantasy wideouts on the season.

Six points with David Dorey

Friday’s quick look at six fantasy items to know

The Packers-49ers game on Thursday night was ugly (except for Davante Adams owners) thanks to rampant injuries couple with COVID-19 defections stripping the 49ers of all recognizable starters. The Packers let them have 17 pity points, but the cold weather is just starting and already teams are having issues with fielding a full team. What is it going to be like in two months?

This is a year we won’t forget, no matter how hard we try. Onto six thinks worth watching heading into Week 9.

  1. Cardinals backfield – Kenyan Drake is out with an ankle injury and Chase Edmonds moves up to the primary role. So far, only Drake and Edmonds have been used for the Cardinals backfield. Edmonds wavers between 20% to 40% of the touches, and this offense has never given 100% to the primary. Edmonds is a solid play this week at the Panthers facing the No. 31 defense against running backs. The No. 2 back this week is expected to be the 7.08 pick in the 2020 NFL draft of Eno Benjamin out of Arizona State. The 5-9, 207-pounder ran for over 1,000 yards the last two season and caught 82 passes in his three-year career. Edmonds won’t take every touch, so it’s always interesting to see the “next guy up.” Jonathan Ward may also see some work, but he’s only been a practice squad guy that works on special teams. Benjamin gets a chance to keep the team from looking elsewhere in 2021.

Notable too is that Edmonds gets to be the No. 1 against a soft defense. He is in his final contract year in 2021 while Drake will be a free agent next year unless re-signed. Edmonds could look like an option for 2021.

  2.  Lions Wide receivers – The passing lags the 2019 version when Matt Stafford played but showed life recently that could be promising. Stafford was stuck at moderate production but then passed for 340 yards and a score at the Jaguars and 336 yards and three touchdowns against the Colts for his best showing of the year. And that happened with Kenny Golladay on the sideline with a hip injury. Fourth-year player Marvin Hall came in and posted four catches for 113 yards in the second half of the loss to the Colts.Marvin Jones failed to make any difference this year until posting five catches for 80 yards in Week 7 and then three receptions for 39 yards and two touchdowns last Sunday. The Lions play at the Vikings this week and Golladay has not practiced on Wednesday and Thursday. He hasn’t been ruled out but isn’t trending well so far. Stafford has two straight games where the passing looked better and that was even without Golladay last week. Jones and Hall are worth watching and if Hall can again show up with the same impact, he can carve a bigger role for himself.
  3. RB Christian McCaffrey (CAR)  – He returned to practice a few days ago and looks likely to be activated to play against the Chiefs this week. That sends Mike Davis to the bench after richly rewarding his fantasy owners for the last six weeks. It will be good to see the No. 1 pick in fantasy drafts but just as notable will be his effect on how the rest of the offense plays. Remember, the Panthers are installing a new offense this year with HC Matt Rhule in his first season. And Teddy Bridgewater was also in his first games as a Panther when McCaffrey was gone for Week 3.Robby Anderson opened the year with back-to-back 100-yard games while McCaffrey was there while D.J. Moore turned in eight catches for 120 yards in Week 2 against the Buccaneers.  McCaffrey’s return is great for fantasy owners, but it could also help Bridgewater, Moore and Anderson as well.
  4. QB Jake Luton (JAC) – Gardner Minshew is out with fractures and ligament damage to his thumb and the Jags are turning to their 6.10 pick this year in Luton. The 6-6, 224-pounder from Oregon State threw 28 scores as a senior last year and he rushed for a net loss of 204 yards on 72 runs in college, so he’s not going to be stealing much from James Robinson as a runner. But he’s very tall and can throw very deep. The hope is that the Jaguars passing offense can connect farther downfield.Starting a rookie is rarely profitable at least for a few games. But Luton will at least bring a new element to an offense that has lost their last six games. D.J. Chark fell from 13.8 yards per catch in 2019 to only 11.2 this year. The rookie Laviska Shenault also averages 11.2 yards. That’s also lower than the 13.6 yards he averaged at Colorado last year. The schedule hits a few tough matchups in upcoming weeks, but Luton is worth watching this week to see if he can do anything with the underperforming Jaguars offense.
  5. Miami Backfield – Myles Gaskin is on injured reserve because of his MCL sprain and Matt Breida would be positioned to become the new No. 1 running back but a bad hamstring has him missing Wednesday and Thursday practices. The Dolphins look like they have to rely on Jordan Howard and Patrick Laird. The Fins just traded to get DeAndre Washington for depth.Laird only totals three catches for 11 yards and no rushes. Howard scored three times over the four games he played, but only gained 14 yards on 18 carries which is why he only played four games. His one catch was a three-yard loss. All this while a rookie quarterback takes his second start. Gaskin is gone for at least a few weeks, so the Fins have to figure out whatever works the best. The matchup with the Cardinals this week is where they determine what they have to use.
  6. WR Antonio Brown (PIT OAK NE  TB) – The Buccaneers signed Brown and he is on the active roster. That’s worth watching for so many reasons. Tom Brady wanted him and Tom Brady got him since his 20 passing touchdowns are No. 4 in the NFL and the Buccaneers are looking really improved.  He hasn’t had any time to learn the playbook and his uniform still has creases. But he is expected to play this week. Chris Godwin has been limited in practices and his status isn’t certain.Brown already served his eight-game suspension and is clear to play. His only game of 2019 was Week 2 with the Patriots – and Brady –  when he turned eight targets into four catches for 56 yards and one touchdown. If this works out, the Buccaneers are going to be scary good on offense. But… it’s never worked out for Brown the last few years.

10 AFC East stories from last week for Bills fans to know

AFC East storylines for Buffalo Bills fans to know.

The Bills are fresh off back-to-back meetings against divisional foes in the New York Jets and New England Patriots, respectively. Some news about the AFC East you might have already heard.

But NFL news never sleeps… and the NFL trade deadline just came and went.

You’re probably all on top of the latest news surrounding the Bills and we hope Bills Wire helped you get there. But let us keep you up to date with the Bills news, just outside the Bills’ realm.

Here are 10 stories from the division over the last week for Bills fans to know, starting with a quick Week 8 game recap for each team:

Report: Chiefs send DeAndre Washington to Miami Dolphins

Running back DeAndre Washington goes from the Chiefs to the Washington Football Team

Another trade trickles in on Deadline Day and it involves the Miami Dolphins, again.

The Fish have acquired running back DeAndre Washington from Kansas City. Draft picks will also be exchanged in the deal.

Washington has played in one game for KC with three carries for five yards.

Overall in his NFL career, Washington spent the previous four seasons with the Oakland Raiders, rushing for 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns. He also had a receiving TD as a Raider.

Report: Chiefs trade RB DeAndre Washington to Dolphins

A trade ahead of the deadline for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a trade ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline, but it’s not exactly what you’d expect from the team. Instead of trading for a player ahead of the deadline, the Chiefs are unloading a player from a crowded RB room after adding free-agent RB Le’Veon Bell.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport, the Chiefs have traded RB DeAndre Washington to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for draft pick compensation. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Dolphins will get a Washington and a seventh-round pick in 2021. The Chiefs will receive a sixth-round 2021 draft pick in return.

Washington was a free agent signing this offseason by the Chiefs, but he didn’t make the initial 53-man roster in Kansas City. He was only elevated to the 53-man roster ahead of the Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

While Washington was inactive in Week 8 against the New York Jets, he did see his Chiefs debut in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos. He carried the ball three times for five yards and caught a pass for two yards on the day.

Washington, of course, is a former college teammate of Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech. He was drafted by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft.

This isn’t a bad move from Brett Veach and the Chiefs’ front office. Washington wasn’t going to get much play in Kansas City with Le’Veon Bell in the fold. Given the uncertainty surrounding the 2021 salary cap, draft picks are the premium currency in the NFL. Moving up a few slots on Day 3 provides the team with more flexibility moving forward.

Report: Dolphins trading for Chiefs RB DeAndre Washington

Report: Dolphins trading for Chiefs RB DeAndre Washington

While the rest of the NFL world struggles to get into gear ahead of this afternoon’s 2020 NFL trade deadline, Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier has been working the phones and has now reportedly secured his second deadline deal of the season. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier this afternoon that Miami was trading WR Isaiah Ford to the New England Patriots and we now have a second report, this one from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, that the Dolphins are acquiring Kansas City Chiefs RB DeAndre Washington.

The terms of the deal, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, feature the following:

Miami receives — RB DeAndre Washington & 2021 7th-round pick
Kansas City receives — 2021 6th-round pick

This deal comes at effectively zero cost to the Dolphins, as replicating late round selections can be done in the blink of an eye on draft weekend. Miami clearly wanted to shake up the skill positions room and take advantage of their depth at wide receiver to try to free up some snaps and acquire a pick. Miami did that successfully and now addresses some of the needs to the roster in the run game by adding Washington to the mix.

At 5-foot-8, 210 pounds, Washington is a dense runner who hasn’t really had the chance to shine with the Chiefs this year but did enjoy some success in the past with the Raiders organization. His best NFL season was his rookie year, when he rushed for 467 yards, two scores and logged 582 total yards from scrimmage for the Raiders in 2016.

Washington, who is a Texas Tech alumni, is a sufficient pass catcher and should provide more receiving chops for the Dolphins’ backfield for the final stretch of the 2020 season. As Miami looks to sort out their running game, this late addition figures to have a chance to claim some reps once he’s acclimated to the playbook.

Chiefs sign RB DeAndre Washington from practice squad

It’s no coincidence that this move is coming during Raiders week.

The Kansas City Chiefs are making another roster move ahead of their Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to the NFL’s official transaction report, the Chiefs have signed RB DeAndre Washington to the 53-man roster from their practice squad. Washington, a former fifth-round draft pick by the then Oakland Raiders, was one of the few free agents added by Kansas City this offseason.

Washington played college football at Texas Tech and was a teammate of Chiefs starting QB Patrick Mahomes. Many believed he’d earn a role on the active roster this season because of his chemistry with Mahomes, but he was ultimately released during 53-man roster cuts. He signed to the practice squad knowing that he had the best chance to win in Kansas City.

It’s no coincidence that the Chiefs chose to elevate Washington before their clash with his former team. He appeared in 55 games for the Raiders over the past four seasons, rushing for 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns, adding another 613 yards and one touchdown through the air. Whatever his role may be in this game, you’d have to expect that it’s important to him to get a shot to go up against Las Vegas this weekend.

Right now, the Chiefs haven’t made a corresponding move and they don’t necessarily need to. They received a roster exemption for Bashaud Breeland, who is coming off of suspension. That roster exemption is good through Monday, Oct. 12. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo mentioned today that the team could ease Breeland back into action.

Report: Chiefs release RB DeAndre Washington

The former Texas Tech teammate of Patrick Mahomes has been informed of his release per a new report.

The Kansas City Chiefs are slowly making progress assembling the 53-man roster for 2020.

The latest player reported to be released in roster cuts is a former college teammate of Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, free agent DeAndre Washington has been released by Kansas City. That means the Chiefs’ backfield is a three-headed attack featuring Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson.

Washington was a former fifth-round pick by the Oakland Raiders out of Texas Tech. Washington started three games for the Raiders in 2019, rushing for 387 yards and three touchdowns on 108 attempts. Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy recruited Washington in college when Bieniemy worked at the University of Colorado.

Many believed that Washington could rekindle the chemistry he had with Mahomes in college, but it appears he got caught up in a numbers game in Kansas City. He was routinely fourth behind Edwards-Helaire, Williams and Thompson in terms of repetitions in training camp.

The Chiefs typically like to go with four running backs on the 53-man roster so this is a departure from the norm. This opens up the possibility of the team bringing in a free agent or carrying an extra player at a different position.
