March Madness rewind: Stephen Curry fuels Davidson’s comeback over Georgetown

Stephen Curry dropped 30 points on Roy Hibbert and the Georgetown Hoyas to advance Davidson into the 2008 Sweet 16.

With no NCAA Tournament brackets being busted this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Warriors Wire is highlighting notable March performances from current members on the Golden State roster.

Who doesn’t love a Cinderella story in March Madness? Long before he was winning Most Valuable Player awards and hanging championship banners in Oracle Arena, Stephen Curry played a key figure in one of the most memorable runs in NCAA Tournament history.

March 23, 2008

Coming off a thrilling victory against Gonzaga in the first round, Curry’s Davidson squad linked up with the second-seeded Georgetown Hoyas. With second-team All American Roy Hibbert returning for his senior season, the Hoyas were labeled as a favorite in 2008 after going to the Final Four in 2007.

However, the Big East regular-season champions ran into magic in the second round. Davidson fell down by 17 points to Georgetown, but it wasn’t enough to send Curry home.

After lighting up Gonzaga for 40 points, Curry missed 10 of his first 12 shots for the Wildcats. However, the future NBA All-Star nailed six of his final nine shots to score 25 of his 30 points in the second half. With the pressure on, Curry aced five of his six last free throws to seal the game for Davidson.

Despite limiting Curry early, the red hot shooter stunned John Thompson III’s Hoyas as Davidson danced into the Sweet 16.

Curry finished with 30 points on 8-of-21 shooting with five 3-pointers, five assists, three rebounds and three steals. Curry’s backcourt partner Jason Andrews added 20 points and five assists.

Next up, Davidson traveled to Detroit to face the Wisconsin Badgers in the Sweet 16.

Al Horford has high praise for Steph Curry’s 2016 game-winner vs. Thunder

Al Horford called Steph Curry’s 2016 game-winner over the Thunder “one of the toughest shots ever!”

During the NBA’s hiatus due to coronavirus, watching highlights from the past has become popular amongst players across the league. Spencer Dinwiddie, Bam Adebayo, Stephen Curry and others have admitted to watching their old film while the season is on hold.

Another player weighed in on a famous clip from the past. Al Horford of the Philadelphia 76ers responded on social media to Stephen Curry’s long-distance game-winner against the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2016.

The veteran big man called Curry’s dagger 3-pointer “one of the toughest shots ever!”

Via @Al_Horford on Twitter:

Curry’s tied the NBA record for 12 makes from beyond the arc — with the most important coming from 38-feet with 2.5 seconds remaining in overtime to seal Golden State’s 53rd win of the season. The two-time Most Valuable Player ended his memorable night with 46 points on 14-of-24 shooting from the field.

Even Mike Breen’s call of Curry’s game-winning shot has lived on in NBA lore.

Fast forward to the 2019-20 season; Curry has only played in five games due to a broken hand injury he suffered early in the season. His return to the court was limited to one game due to the league suspending the season. When the season resumes, Curry will have 17 games left on the calendar.

Steph Curry burst onto the national scene during the 2008 men’s NCAA Tournament

If you didn’t know about Steph Curry before the 2008 NCAA Tournament, odds are you did following his magical run during that postseason.

Before Curry became a superstar guard for the Golden State Warriors, he was leading Davidson College. Curry and the Wildcats were the No. 10 seed in the midwest bracket, and their first opponent was No. 7 seed Gonzaga. On March 21, 2008, Curry burst onto the national scene and led Davidson to an 82-76 first-round win over Gonzaga.

Curry had a game-high 40 points, tallied five steals and shot 8-of-10 from the 3-point line. Following the win, Curry and the Wildcats weren’t done busting brackets.

Davidson then went on to beat No. 2 seed Georgetown in the second round, and then the Wildcats defeated No. 3 seed Wisconsin in the Sweet 16. Davidson made it as far as the Elite 8, losing to eventual champion Kansas, 59-57.

During that tournament, Curry averaged 32.0 points in four games. He shot 46.7% from the field and 44.2% from beyond the arc. He was on the midwest bracket’s all-region team, and he was the region’s Most Outstanding Player, according to Sports Reference.

Like for many other players, the tournament helped Curry gain a boost in draft stock. Curry declared for the NBA draft after his junior year in 2009, and he was selected seventh overall in that year’s draft. In his junior year, Curry scored a career-high 28.6 points per game and shot 38.7% from deep.

Curry played three seasons at Davidson, boasting career averages of 25.3 points per game and a 3-point percentage of 41.2%.

Watch: Steph Curry shows off his golf game with a trick shot from home during the NBA hiatus

During the NBA’s coronavirus pandemic, Stephen Curry is showing off his golf game.

It has been over a week since the NBA suspended the season due to the coronavirus. Since the announcement from the league, precautions for COVID-19 have only grown.

As positives test results for the virus continue to pop up around the league, the NBA has directed teams to close practice facilities. With limited options for basketball activities and California under a stay at home order, members of the Golden State Warriors are getting creative with their free time.

On Friday, Stephen Curry showed off his golf skills. Callaway Golf asked the two-time Most valuable Players how he’s “playing through.” Curry responded on Twitter with a video of him acing a trick golf shot from home.

Curry hit an off-the-wall chip shot directly into a standing cup. The Davidson product celebrated in a similar fashion to one of his vintage long-distance 3-pointers.

Curry nominated his former teammate Kent Bazemore, tennis player Mardy Fish and the popular trick shot group “Dude Perfect” to follow with golf videos of their own.

Whether it’s golf, watching his old highlights, pledging donations or advocating for social distancing, Golden State’s point guard has been active during the NBA hiatus.

Steph Curry’s ‘soul smiled’ during replay of Klay Thompson’s 60 point game from 2016

Stephen Curry spent his Wednesday night watching Klay Thompson’s 60 point game against the Indiana Pacers in 2016.

The NBA hit pause on the 2019-20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. With no games until further notice, players around the league suddenly have an abundance of time on their hands.

Whether it’s playing video games, watching old highlights or learning the piano, members of the Golden State Warriors are getting creative while the season is suspended.

On Wednesday night, the Warriors got an appetizer to fill their basketball fix. NBC Sports Bay Area reaired the 2016 contest between Golden State and the Indiana Pacers — otherwise known as the Klay Thompson 60 point game.

Thompson famously recorded a new career-high in only three quarters against the Pacers. The three-time All-Star had Oracle Arena in a frenzy, scoring 60 points on 21-of-33 shooting with eight 3-pointers in only 29 minutes. Adding to the legend of the Thompson’s night, the shooting guard only dribbled the ball 11 times.

Thompson’s fellow Splash Brother tuned into the reair of the historic night in Oakland. Stephen Curry tweeted he was watching along with the replay like it was live.

Via @StephenCurry30 on Twitter:

On Thompson’s career night, Curry only tallied 13 points, but he did add 11 assists in 29 minutes.

For a team that has struggled with injuries and losses throughout the current season, a trip down memory lane might be just what the Golden State needs during the NBA hiatus.

Steph Curry chimes in on other players watching past highlights during the NBA hiatus

While the NBA season is on hold, Stephen Curry is killing time watching his own highlights.

After missing 58 straight games due to a broken hand, Stephen Curry made his much-anticipated return to the court on March 5 against the Toronto Raptors.

However, Curry’s return to the Golden State Warriors was shortlived. The two-time Most Valuable Player missed the next two games with an illness and before he could get healthy, the entire NBA was put on hold.

The NBA suspended the 2019-20 season until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since the NBA went on hiatus, Curry has been advocating for social distancing in the wake of COVID-19.

The six-time All-Star and his wife Ayesha have set up meal donations for out of school children in the Bay Area. Curry was also apart of Golden State’s pledge to support Chase Center employee’s disaster relief fund. Yet, the Davidson product is still missing basketball.

On Twitter, Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie asked if any other NBA players are watching their own highlights “due to withdrawals.”

Curry’s response was classic.

Via @SDinwiddie_25 and @StephenCurry30 on Twitter:

Curry and Dinwiddie aren’t the only players watching their film during the NBA hiatus. A bevy of other players all chimed in to admit they’ve been watching past highlight reels.

When the NBA does return, Curry will have 17 regular-season games remaining to get his fix before the offseason.
