Darius Slay laughing with Micah Parsons about Eagles’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson getting torched in Tampa was so bizarre

The Eagles desperately need a mature adult in the room.

They might just be 2-2, but the reeling Philadelphia Eagles sure feel like they’re on the brink of an all-out collapse. Little incidents like a recent conversation between Darius Slay and Micah Parsons on his podcast The Edge definitely won’t help matters.

In a discussion about Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s well-known antics, Slay weirdly laughed with Parsons — who, need I remind everyone, plays for the rival Dallas Cowboys — about Gardner-Johnson getting burned by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after talking trash.

It’s a horrible look from someone like Slay. As a teammate, he should have Gardner-Johnson’s back in public at all costs — especially when he’s talking to a rival player like Parsons, who is invested in the Eagles’ downfall:

Gardner-Johnson seemingly caught wind of Slay laughing at him with Parsons and reacted to it on Instagram with disappointment:

Listen, even if you’re an Eagles player bothered by Gardner-Johnson not backing up his usual trash talk, you have to handle that business behind closed doors. You don’t go smiling and laughing about his perceived failures with arguably the best player on Philadelphia’s most hated rival. That’s the absolute last thing you do when your team is already on the verge of a crisis.

Suffice it to say, the Eagles sure do seem like they have a massive dearth of leadership. They really need to grow up before 2024 goes off the wheels.

At this point, after seeing how a “leader” like Slay is happy to throw Gardner-Johnson under the bus, I’m starting to think that’s inevitable.

Trevor Penning fined $11,255 for unnecessary roughness vs. Eagles

Trevor Penning was fined $11,255 for unnecessary roughness against the Eagles. The Saints’ right tackle fell back into bad habits, and it cost him:

It wasn’t enough for Trevor Penning to cost his team 15 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. The NFL came calling with an $11,255 fine for unnecessary roughness after he drove Eagles cornerback Darius Slay out of bounds and into the New Orleans Saints’ bench.

This was the kind of play Penning was criticized for coming out of college, and he had done a good job avoiding them after turning pro. But this was an instance where he fell back into bad habits. It was a dumb play that injured Slay, and bowled over one of Penning’s coaches who couldn’t get out of the way in time on the sideline. And it ended up costing him.

You want guys to play to the whistle, and right tackles like Penning are often tasked with setting that tone. But there’s a time to dial it back. In this case it’s the moment when Penning’s coaches are waving and shouting at him to back off before crashing into the bench.

As for the football impact? This penalty wiped out a 5-yard run that converted a 3rd-and-4, moving the ball from the Philadelphia 39-yard line back into New Orleans territory at their own 46. It took a big effort from Penning’s teammates to keep the drive alive and end it with a touchdown,  but it would’ve been much easier if he hadn’t lost his cool.

Eagles limp into bye week after a 33-16 loss to the Buccaneers in Week 4

The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a disastrous 33-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

With A.J. Brown (hamstring), DeVonta Smith (concussion), and Lane Johnson (concussion) out with injuries, the Eagles didn’t have enough depth in key positions. They suffered a disastrous 33-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Jalen Hurts was sacked six times on the afternoon, and the star quarterback committed another turnover (fumble), as Philadelphia could not sustain any offensive consistency without the big three in the lineup.

Saquon Barkley had ten carries for 84 yards (8.4 avg). Still, with the Eagles playing from behind all afternoon, the running back was unable to get the Philadelphia offense over the hump against a motivated Tampa defense.

An Eagles defense that shut New Orleans down in Week 3 was gashed to 445 total yards for the Buccaneers offense, including 111 rushing yards and a twelve-minute advantage in time of possession.

Baker Mayfield was on fire early, and even after an inefficient second half, he still was 30-40 passing for 347 yards, two touchdowns, and a 100.2 rating.

Philadelphia (2-2) will now have a week off, during which questions about Sirianni’s job security and the Eagles’ playoff hopes will dominate the airwaves.

A.J. Brown, Lane Johnson, and DeVonta Smith all sit out Wednesday’s practice ahead of Week 4 matchup against the Buccaneers

The Eagles released their initial Week 4 injury report and had three key starters all miss practice ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Buccaneers.

A.J. Brown (hamstring), Devonta Smith (concussion), and Lane Johnson (concussion) all sat out Wednesday’s walkthrough.

Brown has missed the past two games with the injury. Johnson and Smith both suffered concussions in Sunday’s win over New Orleans.

Landon Dickerson (wrist) and Mekhi Becton (finger) were limited participants, while Darius Slay (knee) was a full participant after exiting Sunday’s win over New Orleans with a knee injury.

For Tampa Bay, the team had 16 players listed on the initial report.

Of those 16 players, only four missed practice – wide receiver Kameron Johnson (ankle), defensive tackle Calijah Kancey (calf), and safety Antoine Winfield (foot).

The Buccaneers hope to get some reinforcements along the lines of scrimmage with starting right tackle Luke Goedeke (limited, concussion) and defensive tackle Vita Vea (limited, knee).

Rashid Shaheed, Chris Olave could be in line for big games vs. Eagles

Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed could feast on an Eagles secondary that’s given up the third-most yards to receivers this season so far:

Numbers suggest a big game could be in store for Rashid Shaheed, Chris Olave and the New Orleans Saints wide receivers corps

Not including the New England Patriots who have played three games, the Philadelphia Eagles have allowed the fifth most passing yards in the NFL.

If you boil down those yards strictly to catches made by receivers, the Eagles allow the third most yards wide receivers despite having Darius Slay and Quinyon Mitchell at cornerback.

For Shaheed, this could mean more of the same. He’s been Derek Carr’s favorite target and team leader in yards against both the Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers. A large percentage of of his yardage came on the touchdown in this game. You could see him receive more targets and become more involved beyond the deep shot.

Olave still feels like he hasn’t been completely unlocked. He was more productive in the second game. His 81 receiving yards is solid, but it still feels like there’s another level. This could be completely be because the Saints are putting up so many points that it feels like your top receiver should be putting up monster numbers.

This could be the game where Olave goes over the century mark, or gets into the touchdown. If the Saints really feel dangerous, Olave may achieve both for the first time this week.

Darius Slay has high praise, and a warning, for Saints star Alvin Kamara

Eagles cornerback Darius Slay had high praise for Alvin Kamara, but he warned the Saints’ star not to hurdle him again: ‘Don’t jump over me like that’

The New Orleans Saints have had many breakout players this season, as well as a few who returned to form, none more so than running back Alvin Kamara, who has reverted to his peak form in the new Klint Kubiak offensive scheme.

With the Saints taking on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3, veteran cornerback Darius Slay had some high praise for Kamara during his media availability on Thursday, discussing what he thinks of him, as well as one moment he won’t forget from their history.

“He’s nice with it man,” Slay said. “One of the best backs with the best balance I’ve seen in a long time man, he really breaks a lot of tackles. What’s crazy is that I told him don’t ever jump over me again, he jumped over me one time when I was in Detroit his rookie year, he really like, cleared me. So uh, Kamara I know you watching this probably, don’t jump over me like that, I’m (going to) press charges, I swear to god I’m (going to) press charges.”

It’s nice to hear Kamara get his flowers from media and fans, but hearing it from a high-level competitor in Slay, who has been in the league for 11 going on 12 seasons now, is always great. Knowing that his peers see him in the same light many of us do and knowing how difficult it is to truly tackle him, coming from one of the better corners in the league, is pretty interesting to hear.
