Daniel Jones, defense lead Giants to upset win over Panthers

Daniel Jones, who made a highlight catch, and a strong defense led the New York Giants to a 25-3 upset victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The New York Giants took the field on Sunday in front of a half-empty MetLife Stadium for a game against the Carolina Panthers. And over the first two quarters, it was evident why the stadium was lacking its usual volume.

Penalties, missed assignments, dropped passes, poor tackling, terrible play-calling… You name it and it was more of the same for Big Blue.

Yet, somehow, the Giants actually took a 5-3 lead into halftime.

Coming out for the second half however, the Giants turned things up a notch. Play-calling became creative enough to save Daniel Jones from the poor O-Line play, while the defense harassed Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold relentlessly — to the point where he was eventually benched.

The Giants didn’t take their foot off the gas for a change and cruised through the fourth quarter to secure just their second victory of the season.

Giants’ quarterback Daniel Jones makes spectacular catch

Daniel Jones shows he has good hands in addition to a talented arm

The duel between ex-New York Jets QB Sam Darnold and New York Giants’ QB Daniel Jones at MetLife was lackluster.

The Carolina Panthers and Big Blue had combined for all of 8 points deep into the third quarter.

Time to pull out any trick you had in the playbook, even if it meant the quarterback who was concussed on a savage hit a couple of weeks ago turning into a receiver.

Jones did his part on the play and Dante Pettis threw the ball to the quarterback, who made a dazzling grab and took another wicked shot.

Jones returned the favor later in the drive, connecting with Pettis from 5 yards to give the Giants a 12-3 lead after the PAT.

See it: Giants’ Daniel Jones makes ridiculous one-handed catch

Watch New York Giants QB Daniel Jones make a ridiculous Odell Beckham Jr.-like one-handed catch against the Carolina Panthers.

Who says New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones can’t do it all?

Jones, a supreme athlete, showed off his golden hands on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, hauling in a remarkable one-handed catch off the arm of wide receiver Dante Pettis.

Yes, you read that correctly. Check it out:

Odell Beckham Jr.-like, indeed.

Although Jones took a big hit on the play, he stayed in the game and gained nine yards on a rush just one play later. He then dialed it back to college and ran an option play to Devontae Booker for a first down on third down.

Giants place Andrew Thomas, C.J. Board on injured reserve

The New York Giants have placed OT Andrew Thomas and WR C.J. Board on injured reserve and made a flurry of other roster moves.

The New York Giants will be without starting left tackle Andrew Thomas for at least three weeks after he was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Thomas, who had already been dealing with a foot injury, got rolled up on during Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He left the game and was later diagnosed with an ankle injury on the opposite leg of his foot injury.

In addition to Thomas landing on IR, the Giants also placed starting kick returner C.J. Board on injured reserve after he suffered a fracture forearm in the same game.

Thomas and Board become the latest in a long, long line of Giants landing on IR or missing significant time due to injury.

Replacing Thomas and Board on the 53-man roster are wide receiver Dante Pettis and offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, each of whom were signed off the practice squad.

Both Pettis and Cunningham had been elevated last week and made their on-field regular season debut.

Meanwhile, the Giants terminated the practice squad contracts of tight end Jake Hausmann and guard Cole Banwart.

With several spots open on the practice squad as a result of the roster shuffle, the Giants also officially signed linebacker Benardrick McKinney, wide receiver Travis Toivonen and offensive tackle Derrick Kelly to the reserve unit.

Giants fall to Rams: Winners, losers and those in between

Here are the winners, losers and those in between from the New York Giants’ Week 6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The New York Giants were absolutely manhandled by the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. They were beaten in every imaginable facet and it appears time for heads to roll.

With the loss, the Giants fall to 1-5 on the season and have the NFL’s worst overall record since 2017. With the Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers all on tap, things are not going to get easier.

But before we look ahead, let’s examine the winners and losers (and those in between) from Week 6.

Be prepared, however… There weren’t many winners.

Giants protect QB Brian Lewerke, three others

The New York Giants have protected quarterback Brian Lewerke and three other members of the practice squad in Week 6.

The New York Giants announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 6 game with the Los Angeles Rams and, to the surprise of no one, quarterback Brian Lewerke was one of the four.

The 24-year-old Lewerke, who was originally signed in mid-August, is an important piece for the Giants this week.

Starting quarterback Daniel Jones is likely to miss Sunday’s game with a concussion and Mike Glennon is the only other quarterback on the active roster. In the event Jones is inactive, Lewerke will be elevated on gameday and serve as QB2. Punter Riley Dixon will serve as the emergency QB3.

In addition to Lewerke, the Giants also protected offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, defensive tackle David Moa and wide receiver Dante Pettis.

Pettis was a second-time addition to the protection list a week ago, while Cunningham and Moa had all been protected previously. For Cunningham, he has now been protected four weeks in a row. Moa has been protected in all six weeks this season.

Given the Giants’ injuries at wide receiver, it’s likely that Pettis will join Lewerke as a gameday elevation.

Giants protect OL Jonotthan Harrison, three others

The New York Giants have protected practice squad offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison and three others.

The New York Giants announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 5 game with the Dallas Cowboys and once again, offensive lineman Jonotthan Harrison is among them.

In fact, the Giants’ four practice squad protections are identical to last week.

In addition to Harrison, the Giants also protected offensive lineman Korey Cunningham, defensive tackle David Moa and wide receiver Dante Pettis.

Harrison and Pettis were first-time additions to the protection list a week ago, while Cunningham and Moa had all been protection previously. For Cunningham, he has now been protected three weeks in a row. Moa has been protected in all five weeks this season.

Interestingly, only Harrison was elevated a week ago and after back-to-back weeks of being added to the gameday roster, his available status has expired. If the Giants wish to elevate him again on Sunday against the Cowboys, they will have to sign him from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Giants protect WR Dante Pettis, three others

The New York Giants announced their practice squad protections ahead of a Week 4 game with the New Orleans Saints and for the first time, wide receiver Dante Pettis is among them.

Previously, the Giants had been regularly protecting wide receiver/kick returner C.J. Board, but he was signed to the 53-man roster last week.

With Sterling Shepard (hamstring), Darius Slayton (hamstring) and Kenny Golladay (hip) all hurting, it makes sense that Pettis would not only be protected but be potentially activated come Sunday.

In addition to Pettis, the Giants also protected offensive linemen Korey Cunningham and Jonotthan Harrison, and defensive tackle David Moa.

Harrison, who was activated last Sunday, is a first-time protection. For Cunningham, it’s his second consecutive week being protected, while this is the fourth week in a row the Giants have protected Moa.

Giants cut C.J. Board and two others

The New York Giants have cut wide receivers C.J. Board and Dante Pettis, and linebacker Trent Harris.

The New York Giants claimed three players off of waivers on Wednesday — linebackers Justin Hilliard and Quincy Roche, and wide receiver Collin Johnson — leaving them with three additional moves to make.

Those decisions have now been made.

[listicle id=673911]

The Giants have terminated the contract of wide receiver C.J. Board and waived wide receiver Dante Pettis and linebacker Trent Harris.

Board is expected to re-sign to the 53-man roster after the Giants place some other players on injured reserve.

Per the Giants:

Board was awarded off waivers to the Giants on Aug. 13, 2020, two days after he was released by Jacksonville. In his first season with the Giants, Board played in 14 games with four starts and caught 11 passes for 101 yards, with a long reception of 16 yards. He had a season-high three receptions for 32 yards at Chicago on Sept. 20. He also returned two kickoffs for 54 yards and one punt for six yards. Board had two special teams tackles.

Pettis was awarded off waivers to the Giants on Nov. 4, 2020, one day after his release by the 49ers. He played in the season’s final two games for the Giants, for whom he caught four passes for 76 yards and one touchdown. Pettis had two receptions for 33 yards in his Giants debut at Baltimore on Dec. 27 and two for 43 yards, including his first Giants touchdown on a 33-yard pass from Daniel Jones with 45 seconds remaining in the second quarter, vs. Dallas on Jan. 3.

Harris was first signed to the Giants’ practice squad on Oct. 14, 2020 and to the active roster on Oct. 17, 2020. He played in four games with two starts at linebacker and was credited with five tackles (one solo), a half-sack and one quarterback hit.

It’s entirely possible that Harris and Pettis also eventually return but for now, they are the odd men out. But the roster situation is extremely fluid at the moment and is likely to change several more times in the coming days.

Report: Giants’ David Sills, Dante Pettis ‘have been raised in trade talks’

New York Giants WR David Sills, WR Dante Pettis and LB Devante Downs are names that have reportedly been raised in recent trade talks.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

On Monday, the New York Giants traded defensive lineman B.J. Hill to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for offensive lineman Billy Price.

But don’t assume trader Dave Gettleman is done just yet.

[lawrence-related id=673772,673764,673720]

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback reports that wide receivers Dante Pettis and David Sills, and linebacker Devante Downs have also been names raised in trade discussions.

New York was kicking tires on interior linemen the last few days and wound up dealing off B.J. Hill to land Price. And the Giants might not be done—bubble guys Dante Pettis, David Sills and Devante Downs have been raised in trade talks.

Sills has seen his stock rise throughout the spring and summer. He spent much of the offseason working with quarterback Daniel Jones and that has translated to success on the field during training camp and the preseason.

Pettis has also played well this summer and brings added versatility on special teams as a potential return man. That may endear him to head coach Joe Judge, but there are only so many roster spots available.

Finally, the inclusion of Downs in this report may come as a surprise to most. He played poorly for the Giants last season and hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire this preseason.

The Giants have until 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday to trim their roster down to 53 men.
