Packers signing Wisconsin WR Danny Davis following 2022 draft

The Packers are adding a former Badger to the roster by signing Wisconsin WR Danny Davis as an undrafted free agent.

The Green Bay Packers will be adding a former Wisconsin Badger to the roster following the 2022 NFL draft.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal, the Packers are signing Wisconsin receiver Danny Davis as an undrafted free agent.

Davis (6-0, 188) caught 131 passes for 1,642 yards and 14 touchdowns over 43 games and five seasons in Madison. He caught five touchdown passes each of his first two seasons (2017, 2018) and then set a career-high with 478 receiving yards in 2021.

At Wisconsin’s pro day, Davis ran the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, hit 31.5″ in the vertical leap, and finished the short shuttle in 4.18 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.97 seconds.

Davis is undersized and doesn’t have elite athleticism, but he’s a competitive receiver who has experience running the full route tree, blocking on the perimeter and handling gadget touches. He’ll be a long shot to make the Packers’ roster, especially after Green Bay added three draft picks to the position, but a strong summer could keep Davis in town on the practice squad.

Wisconsin’s Nebraska-week depth chart sees a clear No. 2 RB, new No. 1 punt returner

Wisconsin’s Nebraska-week depth chart sees a clear No. 2 RB, new No. 1 punt returner

Wisconsin has released its depth chart for this weekend’s showdown with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

There aren’t any massive changes to note, aside from an obvious one at running back with Chez Mellusi ruled out for the season. A few of Wisconsin’s backups are listed as questionable for this weekend’s contest, though, so we may see the team go a little deeper to find backups on Saturday.

The Badgers will enter Saturday healthier than Nebraska, as the Cornhuskers recently saw their best linebacker go down with a season-ending injury and are dealing with a possible injury to quarterback Adrian Martinez (it was reported last week he was playing through a broken jaw, though seems to be in line to start Saturday).

Here is Wisconsin’s full depth chart for this weekend’s contest against Nebraska:

WATCH: Danny Davis III breaks free for Wisconsin’s longest pass play of the season

The Badgers passing game broke it open on Saturday

Wisconsin’s offense exploded against Rutgers, as the Badgers put 52 points on the board while aided by their defense. The 52-3 win set many season-best marks, including Wisconsin’s longest passing play of the year.

With the game already decided, Danny Davis III broke free from Rutgers for what turned into a 72-yard touchdown. It was Davis’ lone catch of the afternoon, and one of three touchdown tosses for Graham Mertz on the day.

For a Badger offense that has struggled to move the football through the air, Saturday was the first step in putting their slow start to the season behind them.

Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Michael Mayer vs. Danny Davis

One receiver has scored, and the other has not.

There are aspects of the battle between the top receivers of Notre Dame and Wisconsin that might be frustrating for both teams. For the Irish, it might be that Michael Mayer is a tight end. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with a tight end leading a team in receiving yards, it shows that the players who were brought in to catch passes all the time haven’t quite caught up to the receiver who also is supposed to block. The one thing Mayer has going for him in this matchup is that he actually has scored a few times (Writer’s note: Apologies for giving Mayer 13 touchdowns instead of three in last week’s chart).

The Badgers are a run-heavy team, and that’s reflected in what Danny Davis has produced in the first two games. Then again, he only can produce if Graham Mertz is throwing the ball, and that hasn’t happened enough for him any of his fellow receivers to accumulate a touchdown reception to this point. It’s early in the season, and there’s plenty of time to make it happen. The question for David is whether he will be the first Badgers receiver to score six points on a catch.

Two important starters for Wisconsin are battling injury

Two important starters for Wisconsin are battling injury

After injuries plagued the Wisconsin Badgers during the 2020 football season, there are a few key ailments to note on the 2021 team with the season now 11 days away.

The first is to starting wide receiver Danny Davis, who has missed a chunk of time with a head injury—an ailment to note as it was also a head injury that kept him out of games last season.

Wide receiver Kendric Pryor said after practice this week that Davis is “going to be fine” and, while he “understands everyone else’s concern, [Davis is] going to be straight.”

The second is to starting left tackle Tyler Beach, who had foot surgery a short time before training camp began.

Beach’s absence has seen several players receive first-team reps at left tackle, though he did say this about his current status:

“Probably about a week is what I would need. The mental part, I feel like I’ve got down. I feel like I’m even more wired into it now. It’s just going to come down to how I’m feeling physically getting back into the groove of things. I always feel like I’m a guy that can get back into shape pretty quick. I never really have any problems with that, so just getting a week of going through looks and pressures.”

While both players are thought to be on track to play against Penn State, they are both injuries worth noting with the season now fast approaching.

A look at the Big Ten passing leaders in 2020

Just one year removed from losing running back Jonathan Taylor to the NFL draft, Wisconsin’s offense showed some growing pains last season starting a true freshman running back in Jalen Berger and redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz for the majority of the season.

Despite the relative inexperience, injuries and struggles with COVID-19 during the season, QB Graham Mertz finished in the top 10 in the Big Ten Conference last season in passing yards per game. His numbers will likely improve in the 2021 season with an offseason to recover from his shoulder injury sustained against Michigan. The offense will also be returning wide receiver Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor healthy, as well as tight end Jake Ferguson.

Below is the ranking of the top 10 players in passing yards per game from the Big Ten Conference 2020 season. Players from Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan, Indiana, Maryland, Iowa, Rutgers and Minnesota all made the ranking.

It’s a group that struggled last season, mostly due to injuries to top options Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor.

But the whole group returns for the 2021 campaign. With a full spring and summer session set to help Graham Mertz’s connection with the group immensely, we should expect a bounce-back season from the pass-catchers.
